Mel Kiper’s First Mock Draft: San Diego Chargers Select…

Sep 28, 2013; Columbus, OH, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Bradley Roby (1) reacts after the game against the Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio Stadium. Buckeyes beat the Badgers 31-24. Mandatory Credit: Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

Mel Kiper made his first mock draft of the offseason and here is who he had the Chargers selecting with the 25th selection in the draft:

Bradley Roby *San Diego Chargers (9-7)
COLLEGE: Ohio St.AGE: 21HT: 5-11WT: 192POS: CB

Analysis: Roby isn’t yet a complete package at cornerback, but he has top-end speed and quickness, with fluid hips that allow him to turn and run with any kind of receiver. Where he needs to improve is in his ball skills and in not grabbing too much, which will cause him to draw too many flags at the NFL level. But with refinement he can be really good. San Diego was leaky in the secondary all season and could use a talent upgrade.

Everyone knows the Chargers need in the secondary. The team struggled in coverage this year, as was shown on the team’s inability to stop the Broncos on 3rd and 17.

Roby would compete for a starting job with the Chargers. Shareece Wright looks locked in as one starting corner and Roby would compete for the starting gig opposite of him. He has a lot of potential, but playing corner in the league as a rookie is a big step for a lot of players coming out of college. Can he make that step?

we need to start keeping track of who predicts what and lets see who was right.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

done… we will keep a long list of who each person selects

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yes!!!!! I think everyone swung & missed last draft, except for Mayock, who suddenly pulled Fluker out of his ass right before the final bell. He must have gotten a tip, because he changed his mind too quickly.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          Right… I remember that

  • PakMaN

I saw a whole lot of PI in that vid.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

yup… would be a whole lot of PI coming this way. a whole lot to fix

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Anyone described as being “too grabby” sounds no bueno to me.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          That’s how I got my wife ;)

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Hahahaha… I had to rufee mine. When she woke up, the deal was done.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            hahahahha!!!

      • JoseSD

And that was in the scouting report quoted above “too grabby” I don’t want to relive Jammer’s first 3 seasons constant pass interference from our 1st rd Corner

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Hahahahahahaha… At least he will grab, but run faster

  • navw21

In a perfect world we would draft CB Justin Gilbert from Oklahoma State. But Kiper has him going 10th to Detroit. So highly unlikely. If he is gone I would prefer us to get CB Darqueze Dennard from Michigan St. Kiper has him going 24th to the Cincinnati. Kiper writes that he is ready to Start from Day 1. We could trade up in front of the Bengals to say 20th with Arizona and maybe just have to give up a 4th or 5th rounder to get Dennard.

    • kris

      I want this man!

      • Gunnar Martin

Yes! I like the way you think.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i think we should just go at a different position in the first round

      • navw21

What do you think is our biggest need? What position would you go?

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i still think corner is a need…. might be the biggest need, but the talent in the 1st at that position might be equal to the talent in the 2nd…. there may be a pass rusher or Louis Nix available in the first that should be selected

          • navw21

That maybe true. I think the only 1st round talent in pass rushers are Anthony Barr and Khalil Mack which Mel has going 6th and 7th overall. I would hope that we could get a Vic Beasley from Clemson or Ryan Shazier from Ohio St. in the 2nd after getting Dennard in the 1st. That would be a perfect start to the draft in my opinion. Mel has Louis Nix III going 15th to Pittsburgh.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i wouldnt mind beasley in the first over Roby

          • Gunnar Martin

I think we need to remember that TT doesn’t tend to pick for need. BPA seems to be his favorite way to go. Doesn’t mean we won’t go after any positions that we do need, but he may surprise us a bit. Just something to keep in mind.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i love the philosophy. there is no need to select a 2nd round corner in the first because he is needed

  • davacho

not sure if anyone else watched the telesco feed interview earlier, but it sounds like cox is still part of the plan for next year… wonder how that will impact the draft.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Eeeeek! NO!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i noticed the interview… wondered the same. not sure if he was fully committing to the idea either… he did say Freeney was under contract for another year also.. .and so is Larry Boy

      • davacho

he kept saying that players need time to adjust and that it is a common thing- applauded him for work ethic and leadership… i was surprised by how NOT negative he was about him.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Might be part of his ego too… Won’t admit that he was wrong on the cam. Who knows… We will see what he does in the offseason with him

    • Tazzster

Well, he did not say that they were going to keep him.

You can’t torch a guy to the media.
I would be surprised if Cox sticks.

      • davacho

true, but he didn’t have to gush about him either and/or make excuses for his lack of production… we’ve already “paid” for him so i wouldn’t mind him competing, but i am hopeful for better options!

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Yea… He was a good player in the past. Wonder if he can get it done again. Wouldn’t want to rely on that tho

  • blu3ny3llow

Idk about the 1st or 2nd rounds but I’m falling in love with RBs Jeremy Hill LSU and Carlos Hyde Ohio hope either one makes to the later rounds we need a solid back up for Mathews…sorry Ronnie Brown

    • navw21

Mel has Carlos Hyde going 26th to Cleveland via Indianapolis. From the Trent Richardson trade.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

im liking DeAnthony Thomas late in the 5th or 6th… but he won’t fill in for Mathews. He would be more like Woodhead

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Mel Kiper drinks to much, Roby won’t even be in the round. He didn’t play well and all you hear are bad things in scouting reports about his hips and ect……but that probably just means he is going to ball out lol

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahaha… i think roby will be there in the 2nd also

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    He’s too tall for me.

  • tbell11

I still want Louis Nix if available, but its going to be BPA

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Me too!!!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Am I the only one who thinks we should draft a tall & fast project CB in the later rounds, & sign a proven veteran #1 CB to a nice 2 year incentive laden contract, and let the new kid fill in for Shareece when his hammy acts up for 3 games?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Not at all! I get scared of drafting corners early… High bust potential

  • Sergio Quintero

I saw Abreddaris the Wisconsin WR light Roby up for 200 yards in one game, call me unimpressed, if he can do that, imagine what a Demaryus Thomas can do to Roby in a game.

If Gilbert, Dennard & Nix are gone then put me down for one of the pass rushers: Van Noy, Beasley, Murphy, Crichton.

  • Bill Nichols

What about Taylor?? Jeebus man, are we ever going to see this dude suit up?? Bolts baby……..

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

at this point… should we even count on him?

      • Bill Nichols

Good point, and, no way Jose. Still curious as to his skills, guess if he turns out to be a baller, it will just be even that much better.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

yea… i hope he does come back strong. just don’t know what to expect out of him anymore.
