Chargers Re-Sign Defensive Coordinator John Pagano

The San Diego Chargers re-signed defensive coordinator John Pagano today, per Adam Schefter. Pagano’s contract wrapped up at the end of the year and the team has decided to bring him back. He had a tough season with all the injuries to his lineup, but the team should be looking to restock the defensive side of the roster and there will be much higher expectations next season. There was some interest from Ken Whisenhunt and the Tennessee Titans, but Pagano ultimately decided to stick around with the Chargers.

With Pagano brought back, the team will likely stay in the 3-4 defensive scheme that they have been running for a number of years. The defense needs to add some depth all across the roster.

Pagano was applauded by head coach Mike McCoy for the job that he has done this year and the players really wanted him back. He finished off the season strong after Melvin Ingram returned to the lineup, but he will likely be getting an even more critical eye in the coming season. This will be his 3rd season as the defensive coordinator and improvements will be expected.

Can we please get him some corners?

    • Ernie Padaon

that is too much to ask for.

      • vct

Not really…compare to what we ask Santa…let chargers in the playoff :)

        • Ernie Padaon

hahahahaha… Santa was great to us this year.

        • Peter Thompson

HA! You’re really starting to grow on me, you know that VCT?

    • Sergio Quintero

While we are at it, a Nose Tackle and some extra pass rushers wouldn’t hurt.

The yard stats were pretty gruesome most of the season, but they finished 11th in scoring defense, and talking about yards is the equivalent in talking about hits and walks instead of runs allowed for a pitcher, points is the true measuring stick.

With a year of continued development and return to health to Freeney and others, and almost assuredly an influx of a 1st and 2nd rounder to this defense, that 11th scoring defense ranking will clearly improve for 2014.

I am still not sure I am a fan….the offense covered up for the defense the vast majority of the season. But if TT and MM trust him…then I am sure he will be fine.

AT the end of the year the defense stepped up for us when we got our pieces back from injury and players developing over the season.

      • Calman21

It did get better…but our offense still majorly covered for their problems. This was a step up for me…I was on the fire Pagano ASAP bandwagon at the beginning of the season. Like I said, if MM and TT trust him that is good enough for me.

Good move for our squad , he had a lot to deal with last season. I think if our D is showing out after the half way point of the season then maybe the chargers should look into a longer deal. But our D has to go beast mode for that to happen. I’ve noticed it pretty hard to come across a solid DC in the nfl so this a quality decision for a quality coordinator . I’m not saying he is the best out there but we all know with a few more studs on D he can make things happen

I agree with this move. It can’t be understated how constancy is necessary in T&M young regime. Now I’ve been critical of Pagano all season, but the reality he’s had to overcome a lot just to get the defense to perform this well. I wrote an article about identity crisis, and pointed out the Chargers biggest foe was a lot of “NEW”. Pagano had to take a new squad, filled with new starters, most with very little experience, or just new to each other. Get them on the same page, to play at a high level. Pile on top of that, Pags entered the season with some of his biggest players on PUP or IR. Then some of the “healthy” players didn’t quite live up to expectations. After all that, his defense still held Peyton under 30points THREE TIMES.
I don’t know that specifics of why Pags got a new deal, but I’m willing to bet a good portion of it had to do with that last part. Peyton…under 30 points….THREE TIMES…

I think most of his struggles mainly came because of the lack of talent/inexperience he had to deal with. In retrospect, what he did with it was pretty good even though we ended up in the bottom of most stat categories. With added depth, experience, and play-makers, the defense should be much improved in 2014.

    • boltingindiego

main struggles were injuries in the beginning of the year and trying to find the best line up which we had for the late stretch of the year.

      • Ernie Padaon

3rd and 17? 3rd and 24? the way our seasons ended the last couple of years

        • boltingindiego

unless walker was on as olb on the 3-17 i don’t understand why bird was playing on the 3rd down play. We know he can’t cover te’s see the 1st week against the texans.

          • Ernie Padaon

i dont understand anything about what happened on that play! killed me

  • Cgoodness13

  • Peter Thompson

    Hope it works out.

    • Ernie Padaon

i dont know why this makes me laugh! hahahahahah

      • Peter Thompson

Probably because you know I’m setting myself up to be able to bash him in my articles later, when it doesn’t.

        • Ernie Padaon

          most definitely

      • Peter Thompson

One more thing… Can we PLEASE get him a razor, and try to church him up a little bit? Every time I look at him, I see my lazy, beer drinkin, unemployed neighbor. Does he have to purposely make himself the least good-looking Pagano Brother (which is saying a LOT, because Chuck ain’t too easy on the eyes)? Maybe get rid of the stinky hat for a minute, and give him a neat little haircut for opening day? I dunno… maybe I am asking too much… lol.

        • Ernie Padaon

hahahahhahahahaha….. i know what you mean. does he have to play the part of a guy that we picked up off the streets. is that what d-coordinators just look like? Rob Ryan…. looking at you!

  • SoCalFan

When I was watching KC- Chargers game and their 2 pass rushers went down- their (at that time point) #1 league defense started to be burned just like our #30 defense or so. I realized that we were w/o push rush for the most of the season. maybe not only CB are the problem, really. and not Pagano either- against top teams we head are reasonable plan and plays- Colts, 3 Denver games, Bengals.. on the other hand its was painful to watch how defense was burned by Houston, Washington and KC in the first game.

  • Jamie Reno

yes, we need better corners and a better pass rush. i think ingram will only get better if he stays healthy. here’s my postmortem.
