That Philadelphia Fairy Tale: Chargers Still Alive

The San Diego Chargers are still alive and the Philadelphia Eagles fairy tale still is alive.

If you don’t know the fairy tale, here is a bit of a run down. Whoever has played the Eagles in their home opener in the last 4 seasons has gone on to win the Super Bowl.

Can the Chargers make it happen for the 5th straight season? Amazing that the Chargers are still alive. It looks like the football gods were smiling down on the Chargers yesterday though. With the Kansas City Chiefs missing a 41-yard field goal, to the refs missing a penalty call on the field goal, then the fake punt call and the refs calling Eric Weddle down on forward progress. Those are just the things that happened in the game. The Chargers also needed some luck to go their way before the game even started and they were able to get things to fall their way again.

The Baltimore Ravens lost to the Cincinnati Bengals and the Miami Dolphins lost to the New York Jets. The Chargers needed every little thing to go right on Sunday and EVERY LITTLE THING went our way! We didn’t even play well on Sunday, but we were able to come out with a win and a spot in the playoffs.

At least we have one thing in common so far and that’s making the playoffs.

  • arnie

If there is ONE team that can break that trend, it’s my Bolts. LOL
Here’s to believing that it’s time to exercise some ghost of the past.

    BOLD PREDICTION:
Mark my words. I said they would be 10-6 and a wildcard spot in training camp.
The majority of the experts said it was a “rebuilding year” and the Chargers would win 6 games 8 if they were lucky. Playoffs were a pipe dream.
The facts are the Chargers have beaten all the AFC playoff teams except two. They didn’t play the Patriots, and the Bengals only beat them by a TD. That last time a team did that was the Broncos, we all know how the second meeting turned out.
Chargers win it all, against the Seahawks…correction Chargers win it all because it won’t matter who the other team is.

Remember how the first team defense shut down Seattle in preseason? Offense did well too, and we didn’t even play Woodshed ; )

      • arnie

I remember everything Peter. The Chargers are flying on stealth right now. Early in the season the were mentioned as a possible sleeper team, but that was dismissed as “crazy talk”.

  • Cgoodness13

Honestly though we already beat Denver, KC, etc so what’s stopping us from getting the Lombardi? If our coaches show up (*cough cough* Pagano *cough cough*) we got this!

I love this chart. :-) The Chargers have been using up a lot of luck, but perhaps it’s fate?

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I once heard a hockey commentator say “nobody will scrutinize the season like they scrutinize the final moments of a game with playoff implications”. Everyone will piss and moan (especially KC & Steelers fans) about how the Chargers got lucky, and the refs messed up. They will blindly forget how many times their own teams, or any other team in the NFL have benefited from such calls. As Charger fans, we have seen a multitude (bordering on a ridiculous amount) of Hochuli calls, etc… etc… go against us. But, nobody cares about that.

Take a look at the BS Cam Thomas “new rule penalty” that got called in week one. Our defense held admirably, and the refs screwed us, which gave the Texans the win. Even NFL Total Access brought Dean Blandino.. head of officiating. .. to admit that call was BS. You won’t hear a Steelers fan, or a Chiefs fan talk about that complete ROBBERY! We should be 10-6, technically.

So, these are the breaks. Don’t get bamboozled into feeling like this team doesn’t deserve to be in the playoffs, or ever forget that these calls haven’t gone against us time & time again, in critical moments. Just be glad that we are in, and all the crap we have been complaining about… especially the Washington game… is officially in the rear view mirror. Enjoy the clean slate.

Sometimes it’s scary when I read your comments because it is so on-point with what I am going to say. Keep it up Pete. BOLTS ARE IN IT TO WIN IT AND WE AIN’T LOOKIN BACK!!!!!!!!!

      Team. Of. Destiny.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

You know I will, Gunnar. Here’s a few pics I took in the locker room after the game, that I thiught you might like… Try gettin close to Weddle… sheesh. . Lol.

        • arnie

Dang Peter, they boxed you out like Gates. But again you are spot on. We’ve know that the refs screw up in every game. Yet penalties still cannot be challenged, and the NFL refuses to use instant replay to make sure they get a “questionable” call correct.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Agreed. Had this technology been in place on that botched Texans game call.. the Chargers would have been able to rest their starters too.. hahaha.

          • arnie

Peter there are two things people don’t consider. The Chargers lost their first home game on a bad call. It’s only fitting they win the last one on a missed call. The other, the team has been playing with back-ups ALL SEASON. They started the season with 10 players out or on IR.
            Context baby….

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

You know it.. every time I see someone make that lame “you guys lost to backups” attempt at a joke, I just think how embarrassed the 8 teams we beat this season must feel. The same people have been dissing us by saying that our players would be practice squad players at best for most teams. So, by that logic, the Chiefs lost twice to guys who aren’t even fit to be depth players on their own team. But, somehow… WE are supposed to be embarrassed that we beat them twice… backups AND starters? I don’t get it… they are talking out of both sides of their mouths.

          • arnie

Haha Exactly! So by those standards the Chiefs were evenly matched in the game, and still got swept.

    • Jonah Lee

excellent points Peter. Also you always want the best teams in the playoffs, that’s why its the playoffs and the best team that’s streaking right now is the Chargers….enough said!

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Agreed… before the Chiefs game, the NFL analysts all kept saying “The Chargers are the team that nobody wants to play in the playoffs”.

    • BruisingChargers

Yep, Peter we we have been robbed for many years from blown ref calls. Call it divine intervention/destiny/luck or whatever. We are in the play-offs and, I think we can run the table and win the big ONE. Why not? Giants have done it twice. WE Are Due. GO CHARGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BruisingChargers

I am so sick of hearing about how we played KC scrubs, bad officiating, we cheated etc. Fact is.. no one gave us a shot at being over 6-10 and we finished 9-7 and make the playoffs in the supposed ” REBUILDING YEAR.” This team has finally found a way to fight back and win tough games in the end (something Nerd TurnSoftinthe4thquarter rarely did.) We have all bitched about McCoy’s, Whiz’s, and Pagano’s game-time play calling earlier in the season and they have apparently listened, learned and adapted as the season has progressed IE letting Weddle call that fake punt. Speaking of Norvous (Offensive Playcalling genius Coordinator that he maybe once was), Your final press conference as a Charger HC you said something to us fans like “As fans you must be patient as we lost so many good players and with a new regime and HC do not expect much for a few years.” That is in a nutshell. Would like to have seen the look on his face yesterday when the Chargers made it in and the look on his face after the Browns fired they’re head coach on Monday? I think Nervous (run it up the middle for a loss every down) Turnover might future career in those SW Airlines “Wanna GetAway” commercials lol…………

RE: The Chiefs game; the Bolts played like a bunch of Pop Warner rejects. You cannot play the last ten minutes of the game and expect to always win. It was a sloppy performance and some position coach should take the entire defense out to do tackling drills. Hopefully my Chargers will not be embarrassed by playing in the frozen atmosphere of Cincinatti. I did not see any commentary yesterday (Monday) on the crappy play; perhaps us fans know full well the Bolts got lucky all around, especially with the Ravens and Dolphin games being handed to them. So are my Chargers going into the playoffs to be the spoilers, if so they better play better.

    • arnie

Yeah I watched the game, and saw everything you mentioned. But they’ve been playing like that practically the entire season, so that isn’t new. Tackling has been horrible “league wide” since the new CBA got rid of two-a-days. Nobody here is under the illusion that luck was on the Chargers side, but don’t you think it’s about time the Chargers caught a break?
In the end we can always count you to keep us honest. Enjoy the “next” game.

  • Michael Popowich

That’s pretty crazy, hope it does come true again. Not a believer in any higher being, just that sometimes things happen the way it does due to circumstances. Lets prove that it’s not a mistake for the Chargers to be here, and keep winning. Go Bolts!!

  • BruisingChargers

Nerd Turnover got fired yesterday along with Browns head coach Chumpinsky. I seem to recall Norkmeyer saying last year (when he got appropriately fired as head coach last year) “As Chargers fans, do not expect much from this Chargers squad next year and, be patient with the new staff coming in and do not expect much.” LOL. PayBack is a bitch Nerd Turnover!!!!!!!!!!!!!
