1st Round

As Todd McShay pointed out earlier, the popular mock draft pick for the Chargers is at cornerback. According the Walterfootball.com, the Chargers went with speedy pass rusher, Vic Beasley, in the 1st round. With their second pick, the Chargers will address the glaring need at corner CB Jason Verrett of TCU. Here’s what Walter Football had to say about the pick:

#48. San Diego Chargers: Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
The Chargers’ defense made every single quarterback look like a Pro Bowler earlier in the year. They have a dreadful cornerback situation, which could be remedied with the use of an early-round pick in May’s draft. He definitely needs to add some weight for the NFL. If Verrett is shorter than his listed height, he may end up being a slot corner.

Verrett is a good coverage corner with a knack for baiting quarterbacks and getting his hands on the football. He is not the fastest or biggest guy on the field, but he is still the guy you can’t help but always notice around the football. He looks like a track star when he is chasing the ball carrier. He is consistently aggressive in his pursuit of a ball carrier and does not shy away from contact when making a tackle or leaping for an interception. I hope that Verrett is listed as at least 5’10″ and is able to put on a few pounds because the guy knows how to play corner and could be a HUGE addition to this defense, especially paired with Vic Beasley on the edge. His size and school are probably two of the biggest reasons for him being available at pick #48, but some sites have him listed as the top corner in the draft. If Jason Verrett is available at #48, it would be a crime for TT to pass him up.

Check out his highlight tape to see what I’m talking about:

Look out for the concluding Round 3 of the 2014 NFL Mock Draft from Walterfootball.com later today. The Chargers are in for an exciting surprise..

By the time the draft is on, the Chargers will have (mock) chosen every player in college football.

    • Conor Cahill

      haha seriously

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

lol right, every player that isn’t a QB – FS – RT – RB/FB – WR every other position is fair game.

        • Conor Cahill

haha I wouldnt count out WR too soon, Ive seen Sammy in a few earlier mocks

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

not everyone…. we arent going to get johnny manziel or jadeveon clowney… haha

  • Captain Kush

No offense, but why do you waste your time doing these mock drafts?

    • Conor Cahill

mocks being a waste of time is your subjective opinion

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Come on Captain Kush, Stoners aren’t complainers. Mocks are fun dude, you generate opinions from your fan base and get to talk shop with the boys, my wife sure as hell isn’t going to want to talk Mock drafts & Chargers (even though I subject her to it anyways).

  • Derek

If verret denard or Gilbert are in the second. Take em!! Nobody ever complains of having too many good cbs. I think it’s most important if we get a cb we get a outside cb. We got Williams from cal coming back off his pectoral tear. Wright looks like he could be a #1 cb after the broncos games but won’t stick by that till I see how he finishes the season. I don’t like that Jason was having confidence issues in college. How will he do in the nfl where qbs love to pick on the weakest cb? If he’s 5’9 -5’10 his vertical better be up there

    • Conor Cahill

Agreed, I just dont think a cb in the first round is the best move. Second round though, gotta address the secondary.

      • Derek

When picking a cb in the first round it’s rarely about their talent. It’s more about a teams need, the drop off in talent once the cb is off the board, and the potential. I think the acclimation of a db is one of the toughest entering the league. Especially with the emphasis on passing now a days. Look at 2013 yeah a lot of line men were taken but cb’s came off early too. Honey badger would have been a lion in the second rd if it wasn’t for his character issues.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Imagine a scenario where we could get Gilbert in the 1st and Verrett in the 2nd, I could actually go for that too. Wright could move to Slot CB or dime package guy and Stevie Williams same thing…….that would be kinda interesting.

    • Conor Cahill

That could definitely be an option. However, there are more issues than corner, and there are a few good free agent corners this off season.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I know that but you never know what TT has on his mind.

        • Conor Cahill

          In TT we trust

  • Conor Cahill

Let me just add, the dude looks sick playing football. It might just be me, but the Chargers need more dudes with dreads on the team.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      hahaha… they look faster.. right?

      • Conor Cahill

Dreads are like the speed lines behind cartoon characters haha

  • Gunnar Martin

Would that be a dream pick or what? Verrett in the second? I would die from extreme joy.

    • Conor Cahill

Would probably require a teo-like trade up to the early 30s.

  • Nick in PB

Well, the guy looks good but we already have a smallish slot-corner in Williams with more speed. We need a bigger, more physical corner in the second round.
