Chargers Game Ball: Coach Pags

The San Diego Chargers defense stepped up big time this weekend against the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning. The game plan was on point and coach John Pagano deserves a ton of credit for getting his guys ready to play. I have been critical of Coach Pags this season, but I will not hesitate to give him props for pulling the defense together to stop the Broncos.

The defense has been playing much better to close out the season. The defense is coming together. The secondary is playing better. We aren’t talking about Derek Cox making mistakes anymore. The play at nose tackle has been better after benching Cam Thomas. Manti Te’o is getting more comfortable in his role. Donald Butler is looking healthier. Corey Liuget is beating double teams. Thomas Keiser has provided a spark.

The Chargers defense is making things happen. If they can keep up their strong play, then we can finish off the season by winning our final 4 games and a chance at getting into the playoffs. If our defense can play like that, then anything can happen in the playoffs (if we get there).

I have been the biggest critic of coach Pags. I know what he did in the beginning of the season with the late game prevent defense.. yuck!! How well is Ingram doing? It seems with him back the defense got a spark

  • Calman21

Hilarious that the less time Cox sees the field the better our defense does. Wright has done a lot better in the last few weeks as well. Cox is done next season. Good to have Ingram back.

    • arnie

True. Cox may get a chance to earn his money or at least save face, next season. Marshal is under a one year deal and Cox has three remaining, but we still haven’t seen what Steve Williams brings to the table and what Brandon Taylor can add.

      • Calman21

I think Cox is going to get cut if he can’t improve during training camp next season (or maybe sooner depending on the draft). Wright has been looking better…not good, but better.

        • arnie

I can see that, most definately. Wright is only going to get better with more reps, but he’s played better than Cox who is a 5 year vet. I think the Chargers will look at the draft, but not as much as we think. Williams an Cromartie are CB and I’m looking for them to earn more playing time next season.

          • Calman21

I could see getting a CB in the 2nd. Not sure what we end up with in the first. Doesn’t look like a great NT will be available but we shall see.

How many games do we have left? Thought it was only the Raiders and KC.

    • Ernie Padaon

it is just them…. the final 4 games.. counting the giants and broncos games

      • Stefanie Smith

        10-4, good buddy!

I loved Coach McCoy’s locker room speech. I swear he was going to give everyone a game ball. As to Coach Pags, he did deserve the game ball. Man, we have beat him up all season and he came through. He looked so happy with the group. They really do look like they are happy working together., Seriously, he may be a nerd or sort of conservative, but Coach McCoy has pulled this team and all the parts together. I liked it that he gave credit to one of the coaches that is not “one of his guys”. He’s a good guy.

  • Gunnar Martin

Well that performance probably saved his job for another year. It better be worth it. Great job on the game plan Pags.

And can we give some credit to Marcus Gilchrist? He probably had the best game of his young career last night, but guess what? It was at nickel corner, not safety. That’s where he belongs. That’s where his talents are best used. That’s where he produces most, and obviously feels the most comfortable. Can we pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaasssse keep him there Pagano?

    • arnie

We saw this type of play from him last season, in the same position.

  • 619chargers4life

Awesome game last night , I can’t stand Payton . Way to go D.

  • Stefanie Smith

Man, they really did a good job. I am so proud of them.

  • Will

Keiser providing a spark? He was in the right place at the right time on one play. Don’t over analyze that

    • tubbs45

look at keisers stats, for a guy that no ones ever heard of, yes that is defined as a spark!

  • Will

The chargers need to draft clinton Dix from bama to play safety so we can have Marcus at nickel and draft a corner in the second and/or bring another one in

  • tubbs45

Pags was hilarious on the radio yesterday, on the drive. “Well last time some of things we were doing didn’t work. So this time we changed those things and it worked. Sometimes everything falls in place, other times things fall to pieces. Yesterday all those pieces fell into places that worked…”

  • Joel Ayala

I think we need to keep Addaeh at SS and move Gilly to Nickel CB. so far our secondary is looking better that way. we need to make Cox a healthy scratch and use his spot for Taylor to rotate with #37. he’s learning quick and lays hits on fools. good pick up TT..maybe we have our SS for the future. IMO

  • Cgoodness13

I usually don’t get to pumped up over a win, but I got pumped after that performance, but honestly what took the D this long to perform? I’ll admit Pagano called a decent game, but I really hope he still gets fired at seasons end for his inconsistency.
