Cam Thomas Out of Starting Lineup

The San Diego Chargers have demoted another player off of their starting defense. Cam Thomas is no longer the starting nose tackle for the Chargers and Sean Lissemore is getting more reps at the position, according to the UT.

The Chargers recently placed Derek Cox on the bench after his struggles and they finally made the move on Thomas. Thomas has struggled as the starting nose tackle. He hasn’t been able to command the double teams and he has been getting pushed backward on defense. Teams have been able to gash the Chargers defense all season long and one big reason has been the play at the nose.

Lissemore was brought over from the Dallas Cowboys this offseason and has been solid. The team still needs to find a solution for this position in the offseason. They will also need to make a decision on Cam Thomas. He becomes a free agent and the team will need to decide if they want to keep him around for depth or if they let him play for another roster. He is not a starter, but he could be some decent depth and he could be used on passing downs.

What would you do with Cam?

He’s only going to get fatter as he gets older so maybe in a year or two he can become a lower tier starter. But what about Kwame Gathiers? How is he doing?

    • Conor Cahill

Geathers just cant crack the rotation. I can’t imagine he would be much worse than Cam though.

    • tubbs45

Kwame is huge, but slow and is building the strength need to be a solid back up and special teamer. I just dont see him as a starter yet. We really need to think about a NT in the draft or a FA. it is certainly easier to pick up a pre-developed NT than it is to draft and hope. That position in a 3-4 Defense is critical and very tough.

Bye Bye Cam…good luck wherever you end up playing.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

He’s not a starter and yet we let him have a 13 game run at making him a starter……That might have been pretty bad decision because the D-line has regressed Big time (dead last in DVOA against the run) and our pass rush blows and Alot of that is because of Cam.

Peace Thomas & Cox good luck with your future teams.

Man i’d hate for you to be my boss. I go from mopping the floor to lead fry cook, screw up a few orders of fries and you fire me? Even Clary proved to be useful in another position.

  • Derek

I say offer him a decent back up 2 yr contract incase geathers never works out and pick up another nt or de via draft tuitt or Louis nix and groom leasssimore to play which ever is lacking by preseason.

  • Sergio Quintero

Why is the most of the swing and misses with the chargers happened on defense, Thomas failed NT, Cox at CB, Wright & Gilchrist have had a steep learning curve but playing better. And clearly Pagano has not raised his stock as a coordinator, I don’t there will many teams pursuing him to become their DC or even head coach.

    • arnie

See that’s why i was hesitant to throw Cam under the bus, is it the player, or the lack of development from the DC? Either way, there seems to be consistent pattern of performance issues from the defense.

  • diomar espinal

We should let him walk hes terrible and hasnt helped us in any way. That being said we have a big time decision in the off season. If we are not able to find a suitable NT for our base defense then TT might really want to start debating if we should switch to a 4-3 to better suit the players strengths that we have. After this seasons debacle on the defensive line i cant see TT taking another gamble on a guy who might not work.

  • Gunnar Martin

I was so happy when I saw this on the UT. It’s a great move. Thomas struggling + Lissemore impressing = new starter at NT. This should really help our defense. I give a round of applause to Pags.

  • arnie

The best thing in all this? Under norv Cam Thomas an Cox would still be out there. Another reason I like Head Coach Mike McCoy. Cam has been given every opportunity to be the man in the middle. It just hasn’t worked out and i’m glad the Chargers have made a change.
It sucks to be wrong about a player, but it is what it is.
In all honesty, let him compete for a roster spot, he may be better depth on the outside, like Clary was better on the line at RG.

  • NativeSanDiegan

Can Cam, sign a solid fa, keep working on Geathers and Jerideau, and possibly draft NT at 4, 5 depending on all of the above and on who’s available. We have too many other needs in draft to get NT before 4-5 rd
