Looks Like Louis Nix Will Be Declaring for Draft. Chargers Should Be Interested

Notre Dame DT Louis Nix looks like he is going to declare for the NFL draft very soon. He sent out this picture on his instagram last night:

He also has signed on with an agency today to represent him in the 2014 NFL Draft. The official announcement has not been made, but it
really looks like he will be leaving school early to join an NFL team.

The Chargers should be interested in picking up Louis Nix in the draft. He is going to be the top nose tackle in the draft and the Chargers are in desperate need of a nose tackle to fill the spot in our 3-4 defense.

Nix fits the mold perfectly for a 3-4 nose tackle. He is a big man in the middle and can get the attention of multiple defenders. He would be able to free up the other guys on the defense and allow the linebackers to fly through the gaps to make plays.

Nix did suffer a torn meniscus during the season though and it is an injury that teams will be scouting out. It could make him slide in the draft and put him in the laps of the Chargers. I would love to pick up Nix for our defense. If there is one position that can make everyone else on the defense play better, it would be that nose tackle spot. Nix could be the big boy that we need.

If there is a player in the draft that I have already fallen in love with, it would be this cuddly bear in the middle. What would you all think about adding Nix to the roster?

    Hallelujah !!!!!!

“… with the (blank) pick of the 2014 NFL draft, the San Diego Chargers select… *insert drum roll*… Louis Nix, Nose Tackle, Notre Dame.”

    And the crowd goes wild.

    • John Bauer

I still would like a elite pass rusher if any are there, or a top LT. but a NT would help also.

    • Mark Koenig

Cornerback is the Chargers biggest need.

      • Gunnar Martin

We can get that in free agency or in the second round. Take your pick. Nose tackle effects the entire defense while CB doesn’t (not that it’s not still a crucial position, it’s just more important that we have an effective NT in a 3-4 defense).

        • micah

          thats deffinetly true.

  • Daryl Peek

    What’s up with Kwame Geathers?!?

    • arnie

It might be safe to say, he hasn’t quite worked out. Or he’s still a work in progress.

      • Daryl Peek

I haven’t even noticed him out there if he’s been out there? Too focused on the sorry secondary

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I don’t think he has been active for along time now.

          • arnie

            That about says it all…

  • arnie

Buyer beware. A meniscus injury can occur again in the position of NT. If the Chargers are in “desperate” need of NT I’m not comfortable with drafting kid that could end up on IR. I expect the Chargers to look for other options, we all know about those labels of “top anything” in the draft are.
The Chargers “needed” a “top LT” in the last draft. Not only did they not get get one, but the “top LT” in the draft don’t look so top right now. In fact the not good RT has played great, he has played almost a great a “top LT” too.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’m with you man, that’s a serious injury and the re-injuring possibilities aren’t worth your 1st round pick, I’m down if he slips to the 2nd round if not I’m cool with DaJuan Jones in the 3rd or 4th.

    • Derek

I agree but can’t help but think of the possibilities after watching what star is doing for the panthers. But to be fair jeinkins if the saints went much later and has been nearly as efficient. So I hope we find 1 great nt that can start now. Along with a #1 cb

      • jo dough

Daquan jones is this years Jenkins

      • arnie

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been wrong before. I almost choked on my latte when i heard they picked Te’o. Kid is turning out okay. They need help on the front seven Cam is getting moved off his spot in man. I had hoped the young man would step up and be an impact at NT, if given the chance. It hasn’t worked out that way.

        • Derek

Nix was the man that kept teo clean to make plays. But the question is are we over valuing a nt with such a need at cb and dearth of talent beyond verett, roby, the ducks cb, and that other top 5 cb. I feel we should spend the rest if this year studying our cb’s closely and deciding ago deserves to stay then drafting who needs to be replaced

          • Derek

And rib milus has to go as soon as a better option is presented

          • arnie

Agreed. DB’s being out of position or confused, is the reason he was let go in denver.

          • arnie

The value of NT can’t be under valued in a 3-4. He has to do the work of two players. With the Chargers it’s not that simple. See coverage sacks come from the DB, but the Chargers can’t get pressure unless then send a blitz and the DB’s can’t cover forever. That tells me two things, the personnel is lacking or the scheme is poor. After looking the D over it’s a good mix of both. When Weddle was the Nickel LB the run D was good. In the Bengals game they moved him out to FS, and Marshal to CB the pass D was better an the run d Suffered. The LB and Addae were getting to the hole late or just out of position. Weddle was cleaning things up.
All i’m saying is this, with Cox out, and marshal can play well, the safety help can rotate to Wright. With Cox in, the help was always late because “both” were getting burned. Wright covered better, he’s just inexperienced and this is first time starting. they will draft a CB though, and Cox will be on the short list.

          • Derek

No faith in the Patrick Peterson lottery?

  • Cgoodness13

Lets hope Nix drops to the 3rd round and becomes the defensive version of KA13 lol

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahaha. would be amazing. in the 2nd round he is a steal. in the 3rd, he is rookie of the year!

  • Bill Nichols

What the hell happened to Taylor??!! Anyway, I think we now have a GM who has spent the majority of his upbringing in the NFL as a talent scout, and this means he knows better than most when it comes to future talent. God knows AJ didn’t know a damn thing, mostly got lucky with the few stars he did draft. Between Telesco, and McCoy, I bet we get an even better draft than last year, and that one was awesome. Defense, Defense, O-line, O-line, oh yeah, and by defense, I am also meaning SECONDARY fools….. Hope we win out. Bolt Up!

  • Will

If we get nix we need a cb in the second and need to sign another one in FA along with an OT

Since VB hasn’t seemed to be working out so much…..should they maybe trade him to get more draft picks…I hope he does well with this ream but just throwing it out there

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i would do it, but dont know what you can get for him.

  • jamfed

I think NIX would be a very good addition for the San Diego defense, but that might be a bit of a luxury pick. SD is better off switching to a 4-3 with their current roster. I’d say draft a cornerback with the first round pick and go get free agent DE Michael Johnson from the Bengals. Then the pass rush improves massively (with the addition of Ingram), and the secondary improves with good pass rushers!
We all know Pagano is gonna be FIRED so there’s no point in sticking with the 3-4 with no nose tackle or speed pass rushing OLB. (BTW: Watch LB Jon Beason on the Giants this weekend. He’s better than Butler, and will be half the price in free agnecy)

  • jeffrey scharf

We can get a Lt in the 2 or 3 round. We need defense bad

Louis Nix, Cyrus Kouandjio, Khalil Mack and Ifo Ekpre-Olomu

I’d take any of those players in the 1st Round

  • tbell11

Maybe if we get Nix in round 1 that would help Manti Te’o regain his college form pre-Alabama game lol.

  • Captain Kush

Didn’t he he get punked by the Alabama o-line last year?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Not Nix. He was one of the guys still pushing through that o-line. We all know that line had a ton of talent too

  • joerockt

If we stick with the 3-4, this would be the guy. He looks like Jamal reincarnate, big man with fast feet. Still feel that we need to shore up the O line with a top LT, but we need to take the best guy for our pick, depending on our needs.

  • 1961 Fan

Another tub of goo that is great in College, but eats his way out of the NFL in three years. Did everyone forget the Bolts need an OT on the left and a bunch of defenders on the corners?

  • 619chargers4life

    That’s a big dude

  • micah

I think it would be sick. he is really good but there are other realistic options at nose tackle that would be upgrades in the second and third rounds.the chargers do really need some more good corners. they cant just expect all their coverage problems to just dissappear, and just because their corners played okay against a pretty bad giants offense, they still could use a player with the potential to shut down wide recievers. theyll probably get someone in the second or first round and then draft annother a round or two earlier
