Gary Kubiak Out in Houston, What Will Happen With Wade Phillips?

With the news that Gary Kubiak is getting fired out in Houston, I can’t help but think about what is going to happen with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Phillips is one of the best defensive coordinators in the league and we watched him turn our defense into a dominating, aggressive unit. With all the deficiencies that the Chargers have had this season on the defensive side of the football, I can’t help but think about the possible options that could be coming available.

Phillips is the reason why we run a 3-4 defense. He brought over the defense and we have not moved away from it since. There have been struggles with the style of defense since he has left and I wouldn’t mind bringing back the guru in order to clean some things up. He still has a job with the Texans and whoever they bring in as a new head coach may want to keep him around, but I would love to steal him back.

Would you want Wade back?

I’d go with Rex Ryan if he gets the axe in NY this year for DC,but Wade would be on the list for candidates.

    • Sergio Quintero

      • Ernie Padaon

I hate Rex so much as the opposing head coach… which translates to me loving everything about him as a coach for the Chargers.

  • Kenny Redman

    Hell yes!!!!

  • blu3ny3llow

Well if they hire Ken Whizenhut he will probably stay put…if they hire Lovie Smith…sure why not….just saying though

So many options for DC next year, plus a Draft full of talent at areas we need it

  • tubbs45

Interesting… Hadn’t even considered it an option, would Phillips?

  • Peter Thompson

The Texans would have to be insane to let him go, and we would be stupid not to take him if they did. Wade is a heck of a defensive coordinator. His defenses are always top-notch.

  • Sergio Quintero

If A.J. were here, Wade would be the DC, but TT and MM have no connection to him, I would bring him in no question. But will this front office?, I hope they are not lazy, and go with some Vic Fangio protege (he coached with McCoy in Carolina) or someone from Denver’s current staff.

    • Gunnar Martin

Well Whiz and Pags had never coached with McCoy before, had they?

      • Sergio Quintero

Reason for optimism, I concur on your assessment.

      • arnie

And it could be Pags last time.

        definitely not

i see wade phillips and rex ryan as being the biggest 2 candidates for our dc position. I would think maybe lovie smith but i see him as being only looking for a hc position but if he did consider being a dc he only uses a cover 2 defense and i don’t think we have the personnel for it.

    • Sergio Quintero

Put me down for Rex Ryan, he might be a loudmouth jerk, but the guy is a brilliant defensive mind, that defense just kept humming along even without Revis.

  • Gunnar Martin

I was thinking this too. It’d be pretty great if we got him.

  • arnie

If Wade does come available, the Chargers would be fools to not contact him. But my pick, and this is a long shot, is Brian Stewart, if the DC job were to be open here.

  • Bill Nichols

Pags has topped out, not sure that he can do much more than he already has done, although, if we had better secondary, we probably wouldn’t all be hating on him as much. But still, hell yes, bring Wade back. Didn’t we have the number 1 D when he was here, or was that with lucky ass River boat Ron? Anyway, through the draft, FA, and with a new DC, our D should get to the front of the pack, or at least out of the shitter……

  • Aaron Johnson

I support Pagano because I know what he is capable of with actual starters. You cant tell me Wade Phillips (with the same injuries and the players we have filling in) would create a BETTER defense. Our CBs cant cover, our LBs have been a pick up group and our FS has been playing LB to make up for the slack. Jump off the Pagano bandwagon if you want but the injuries tell the full story.

i somehow agree. I watched Kansas playing us and Denver. Without two top pass rushers their seemingly great defense looked just like ours, especially secondary- consistently getting burned. We are without Freeney and Ingram, with Johnson in and out …. we draft NT, DT, CB and see how it plays out next year with healthy defense. There 1-2 people around only as DC who will GUARANTEE better results than Pag.

I am not sure why he should be such a hot commodity… Dallas defense was a joke few years ago. Houston defense now is so-so and even before it was good only stat wise in terms of yards etc- direct consequence of Texans powerful running game on the offense (thereby eating a lot of clock and giving up less snaps on defense to the opponents).
And Chargers defense a while ago with him had tons of talent too….which is not the case right now.

  • micah

yeah he is a good dc. do you think the chargers might demote pagano to linebacker coach or somthing. keep him and bring him back into somthing he was more successful with.also it woul give the defense some familiarity.
