Chargers Still In Playoff Hunt, But Also In Hunt For Top 10 Draft Pick

The San Diego Chargers are still in the hunt for the playoffs. It is crazy, but we are still there. We have struggled with all kinds of things this season and the roster has been an eye sore on Sundays, but the team is competing and keeps finding different ways to lose games. Every time the team builds up a bit of hope for the playoffs, it gets smashed right back down with a devastating loss. The rest of the league just continues to play pitiful and it is allowing us to hang around.

How bad is it?

If the season ended today, we would be the 12th pick in the draft. The Steelers would be the 10th pick in the draft and we hold the same exact record as they do. Yet we are one game away from the playoffs.

Whatever we do from this point forward, we should be really good at it. If we win, let’s win the rest of the way out. If we lose, we should lose the rest of the way out. Might as well be good at one of them!

A top 10 draft pick would be kind of nice. The team has a ton of holes that need stars in them. A top 10 selection could bring in a nice prize.  I will not root for losses, but every miscue gets us closer to a possible top 10 selection.

Yeah this will be a nice draft for us. Most team in the top 10 are probably going to be going after QB’s which gives the Chargers one of the first position players. Chargers won’t be doing anything in the playoffs with this defense anyways and winning against Manning is not happening. I would like to see Eli get sacked at least 10 times though.

  • chris01

But who would we even get in the top
Besides anthony barr if he drops?
We need a cb but not are top 10 worth
Best situation trade back to a mid 1st rounder plus and additional pick then
    Get a cb

    • Gunnar Martin

As far as corners go, I’m in love with Jason Verrett from TCU. There are a few other first-round caliber CBs, but I would prefer we go with him. But even if they are all there when we are on the board, we have to take a really, REALLY hard look at Louis Nix (if he’s there too, that is). He would help the D in soooo many ways. Clog the running lanes, eat up blockers (especially for Te’o, who played his Heisman-candidate season behind the beast himself), etc. He would probably help the pass rush a great deal too. The whole defense will benefit from that addition, whereas it would primarily only be helped in the passing game if we got a corner. Just food for thought.

Verrett is my dream Day 1 pick.

I love this thread. I have felt this way for a few weeks now. Either win out or lose out, either way do something good for the fans. I again (like all of us abused fans) bought into us getting into the playoffs after the KC game. But, in typical Chargers fashion we lose this week. Now I am 100% on the high draft pick train. Lets build this team for next year and really see if we can make some noise in the playoffs in 2014!

    • Stefanie Smith

We said that last year when we were doing the draft. The draft! Then when they don’t pan out, we argue with ourselves and say to give them a few years.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Fluker & Allen are both amazing additions, Te’o will be good after alot of learning but I’m still confident he will be a good player. If we can have a similar draft where we get a couple stars we are going to be good next year.

        • kris

THIS^^ Last years draft was one our best in a long time. Fluker and Allen are beasts!! Steve Williams may be ok too, time will tell.
I like efo the cb from Oregon. Of course if Clowney or Barr somehow fell to us that would be sick! I will wait to post my dream picks until the season ends and we can really see what position we’ll pick from.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Good man, that’s pretty much exactly how I’m looking at it too. Draft talk is alot of fun though lol

  • Stefanie Smith

This is great loser talk—tanking for draft picks. Don’t hear the Pats or Broncos or good teams worrying about picks.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

that’s because they are good team, we are not quite there yet.

    • Daryl Peek

I absolutely loathe tank talk but this team is going no where and needs to shake things up to get better.

      • Stefanie Smith

So throwing games is the answer. Nice. Not!

        • Daryl Peek

Never said I’m good with throwing games. Shake things up is more about drastic roster moves and possible coaching changes in the problem areas.

          • Stefanie Smith

Tanking for draft picks intentionally is throwing games…losing on purpose, however anyone wants to say it.

          • Daryl Peek

So are you implying I’m saying the BOLT should tank?

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I wouldn’t mind loosing out from here on out, lower draft pick in each round sounds really good to me and we could possibly get down to the 7 or 8 pick. I know none of the corners are rated at being top 10 as of yet but there is so much beastly talent in this draft and Alot of QB’s will be taken ahead of our pick freeing up some position guys to land where we land. I don’t think we have a shot at Barr anymore which sucks but guys like Beasley and other pass rushers could bring some serious pressure we need.

Who’s going to be your 2014 Tavon Austin Ernie?

    • Tazzster

I say we pick up a stud Defensive Lineman with the first pick. Then go with best available defensive player from there on out.

I see no reason to draft an offensive player in the draft.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

maybe a WR to replace Brown or LT or G in the mid/late rounds gotta have depth

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

saw that Lewan was rated as a 3rd rounder by some NFC scout. I would steal him in a heart beat in the 2nd round

        • Tazzster

          NO!

The offense will have to make it another year. With everyone healthy (big if there) we are actually deep at WR. The offensive line has survived lots of injuries this year. Lets hope lightning does not strike twice and they survive another year.

we NEED to improve our defense.

we NEED a stud defensive lineman who can pass rush
we NEED a linebacker that can rattle peoples teeth and punish RBs
we NEED a corner who can cover 1 on 1
we NEED a safety who knows what he is doing – and preferably one who can ‘bring it’ (Sean Parker of UW – late round steal here)

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahaha…. mike evans? i usually fall in love with a wide receiver and a safety. we shall see. still hoping somehow we get clowney or barr, but that seems highly ridiculous right now

  • SoCalFan

tanking is one thing….losing (on purpose) to the scum like donkeys, faiders and redneckchiefs is another. i have no clue how such an idea maybe planted into someone’s brain…

    • Stefanie Smith

Agreed. It’s called throwing games or cheating. That is what losers do.

    • 1961 Fan

It is implanted in the brain of Ernie Padaon, that is the caliber of writer on this site. I think Peter Thompson is the best of the lot. Perhaps he would consider taking over the editorial duties. It is apparent Ernie has lost it.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

what is implanted on my brain?

        • 1961 Fan

In the post above mine, SoCalFan said “I have no clue how such an idea maybe planted into someone’s brain” perhaps they are commenting on your quote; “if we lose we should lose the rest of the way out” : Just read the other posts to see how the true fans feel about “tanking” just to get a better draft choice.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I never said tank. I would never root for a loss. that would be stupid.
If we lose, the season is lost. Losing the rest of the games is not something i would prefer, but if it happens, there will be good that comes out of it.

if you want to read that as i am not a true fan, then… i really don’t know.

  • Gunnar Martin

Better have another amazing draft TT. You’re the only way out of this mess.

  • Nick Mansoor

I honestly think we should try to win the last few games, just because the city if SD will literally be up in flames if we do worse than the Faiders. As far as the draft goes, i think we should seriously consider picking up that Efo dude from Oregon, we need a corner with great speed and hands, and this guys got it. If for some reason he is gone, then we NEED a nose tackle to help open up the lanes for Liuget and Teo or at least a decent safety to line up next to Weddle. Yeah, main focus will be all defense this offseason with a sprinkle of o-line. I know it haha

  • 1961 Fan

That is just stupid; you want to win every game even if you finish at 1-15.
