Open Thread: Bengals @ Chargers

Well, here we are again. Almost exactly one year ago to the day, the San Diego Chargers hosted the Cincinnati Bengals at Qualcomm Stadium. That contest was won by the Bengals by a score of 20-13. The then 4-8 Chargers put up a fight against the 7-5 Bengals, but came up short. Rivers only completed 26 of 48 receptions for 280 yards, and one touchdown. He also lost a fumble, and threw an interception. The defense held Dalton to 25 of 38 receptions on the day, with only 211 yards. Liuget had a sack (picture above), Demmorio Williams had a pick-six, and Lynch grabbed an interception. Danario Alexander had a TD grab. But, it was not enough to overcome a 118 yard rushing performance by Green-Ellis.

This year, the circumstances are slightly different, but not by much. The Bengals are heading up their division with a 7-4 record, and the Chargers are fighting to keep in the hunt for the final wild-card spot, with a 5-6 record. The tables have completely flipped for our team this year. The o-line has been surprisingly stout, after being awful in 2012. Philip Rivers is having an MVP caliber year, and he is not turning the ball over. However, the defense that put the pressure on Dalton last year, is essentially a shell of itself this year. Our team is banged up, and tons of guys have been asked to step up on both sides of the ball.

To have a successful day, Rivers must play near-flawless football. The secondary will have their hands full with A.J. Green, and will have to get help from our 3rd string pass rush. I really can’t tell if this will be a shootout, or a low-scoring game, like last year. The Bengals defense has been very good all year, but lost their star nose tackle (Gino Atkins) a few games ago. Andy Dalton has been as inconsistent as it gets, putting up ridiculous points one week, and getting nothing going the next. Still, their record speaks for itself. The Chargers will have to get this home crowd into the game!!!

So, here’s to our boys pulling out a great victory, and starting a home-game winning streak that carries us to the promise land of the playoffs! I want to see sacks, hurries, pressures, turnovers, and nastiness from this defense! As for the offense, they just need to continue what they did last week, when they DOMINATED a top-notch Kansas City defense.

If you have never been to one of our open threads, please feel free to post in the comments section below. We will be cheering, laughing, crying, yelling, and showing our Charger Pride, as the game plays out. All are welcome, but keep comments above the belt, and don’t be a troll, or witness the wrath of Bolt Beat Nation… hahahaha. Most of all, enjoy yourself = )

Keep Bolting Toward Excellence!

You knew the secondary would remember they suck

  • RZ

Alright O…what do you need to do now?!

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Green and Allen… that is all. NO GATES PLEASE!!!!!

  • Brandon Reisinger

    Meltdown initiated

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Wasn’t that already done in the first half when they took a knee?

  • Sandy

I’m so sick of the Chargers!! They really suck!!

  • arnie

See this is called GRINDING IT OUT! The Chargers can’t or won’t stop the run, so Marvin Lewis keeps running the ball. Then with one safety deep he throws in the endzone.

  • navw21

That looked like a Goodman return there.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Worse. Except he gets paid less than Goodman for doing the same thing.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    Keenan time.

  • arnie

The Chargers will respond with a field goal, and the Bengals will answer with another AJ Green TD.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Hope not… why do we always play them this way?

      • arnie

I’m just asking them to prove me wrong. The coaches have made a habit of sticking with the game plan.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Ahhhhhhh… that’s why Taylor isn’t on the field… got it.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    Thank you Keenan.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Gates – “Throw it to me buddy”!…. Rivers to Allen… 1st down.

    • VCT

i bet PR lost a little of fate in Gates after the last fumble

  • navw21

Has Vincent Brown even been on the field since his early catch?

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      ……………….. Yes…. but, NO!

  • SoCalFan

    where is Tutu?

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Because thats a Woodhead time to call.

  • SoCalFan

i want to kick whisenhunt, really.

  • navw21

Lets go hurry up here. Let Philip call the plays since Wiz aint doing so great today.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    No flag?

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Arnie… they wouldn’t even try to run it to get into FG range. Pathetic.

    • arnie

      Speaking of running? Where’s Ryan?

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

        In Whisenhunts trade doghouse.

        • arnie

He’s still bummed about losing Fozzy?

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’d laugh.. but I’m too angry.

          • arnie

I’m with you. this is ridiculous

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Should have passed on the penalty… but what do everyone else in the fucking world besides McCoy know?

  • RZ

    just great…smh!

  • Sergio Quintero

Have a sinking sensation, a TD pretty kills the game

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

No… the crowd has been silenced by McCoy, Pags, and Whisenhunt… not Cincinnati.

  • Daryl Peek

In a game where our defense is actually playing halfway decent we got Gates fumbling and Rivers off target on crucial passes that could be big plays. (SIGH) Its looking like another game blown where we could control ours!! # FRUSTRATED

  • dwp3fe

our secondary is awful! they must be Norvous!!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Look for a BIG Cincinatti play here.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Cox would have burnt that toast.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Act like it’s the two minute drill in KC please… you don’t have to wait until the end to be good.

    • VCT

Do the fans have to do what the Dolphins did? Gather in front of Chargers gate?

  • arnie

Cox would have given up the TD. Great play marshal.

  • Sergio Quintero

Time for the no-huddle hurry up, and yes 4th down is an option

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    Penalty… Fluker.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    FUCK!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    This is it.

  • navw21

    It’s done we’re fucked.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Its over. Thanks McCoy! You had some really good punts today!

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Best in the league at predictable conservative play it safe calls until you lose with the playoffs on the line in your own stadium.

  • Daryl Peek

That was a fumble and likely game over…

  • arnie

Le t me guess,” Where not going to make any excuses…or question play callin”?

  • Sergio Quintero

Chargers have their season in the balance, hoping their D holds Cincy to a FG. Basically must play perfect the rest of the way, it looks bleak.

  • Daryl Peek

Wasted opportunities in big games. Norvous continued…

  • Brandon Reisinger

    Meltdown complete

  • FitzWilly

    Maybe next year folks :)

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Just run at Thomas & Te’O.

  • FitzWilly

Lack of talent + Heart = no playoff
    AGAIN

  • navw21

Holy Shit. Talk about a Miracle

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      WOW!

  • arnie

Again, THIS is why the game did not sell out. if they want “fan support”? show you willing to do whatever it takes to win, and act like you know you have a chance to get to the postseason.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    Are you fucking serious?

  • navw21

I just wish Weddle returned it for a TD bc I have no faith in the offense today

  • arnie

    Weddle….

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    Run Woodhead?!!!!!!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    GET OUT OF BOUNDS!!!!!!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I changed my shirt from Gates to Weddle earlier.
