Why Does Derek Cox Keep Getting Reps As The Starter?

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times…

Derek Cox was benched for the 3rd time yesterday and Richard Marshall was inserted into the starting lineup after Derek Cox gave up a couple of big plays to the Chiefs. Is there any reason to keep giving Cox starting reps? Is there any reason on why he should be on the field? He has been a disaster in the secondary this season.

Cox was expected to come over here and help our secondary. He was supposed to give us better support over Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason, but he has been a huge disappointment. We watch Cox get burned every single game, but for some reason he keeps getting an opportunity to start. He may have been a good player with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he is nowhere near a decent player with us. We can’t trust him on the field. He doesn’t want to tackle and he doesn’t want to cover. He is a waste of space.

Bench him…. permanently.

Cox keeps getting first team reps because TT and the Chargers are financially invested in this player. Plus, there is ego involved. Not sure TT is willing or ready to admit that Cox–his first venture into big time free agency as a GM is a bust. I truly think TT thinks that Cox will come around. I believe he has stated this in an interview.

    • JoseSD

What are you talking about? His ego? If that were the case Max Starks would still be here too, they signed him and it turned out he was terrible. The big difference…. King Dunlap was showing he could get the job done. With Cox there’s no one better that could replace him full time. The trade deadline has passed and no one on the market can really help. Not even Nnamdhi Asomugah as some like to think, he doesn’t fit and he’s slow and not a great tackler, sounds familiar. There are only financially stuck with him this season if they cut Cox within the first 3 days of the new league year they don’t owe him anything more. Unless they finally get their head out of their ass and stop playing him 10 yards off the line every snap or put Taylor at SS and Gilchrist start over Cox things won’t change cause the CBS suck, Wright has been really disappointing too

      • Stefanie Smith

Don’t get defensive. Having an ego is not a bad thing. He is invested in this guy. It is part of his resume for his first GM job. Yes, his ego. Why do you think that is negative? And as to Starks–the deal that Cox got vs the deal that Starks got is totally different. Tom Telesco is not Mother Theresa’s counterpart. It is not bad he has an ego. We all have egos. It is also not bad that he wants to be right in the decisions he makes and doesn’t give up on them quickly or lightly.

You don’t think a guy in Telesco’s position is egoless, do you? Strange, if you do.

        • Bill Nichols

I want TT to have an ego (stupid statement cause like you said, we all have them), and I am trusting that he knows better than I do. I think you are right, it is his first “big” move, and there are coaches telling him that he will do better. Maybe this is what it is going to take to get his heart right. Bench him, make him think about when, and if we let him go. No one will want him when we cut him. I just hope and pray, that he comes around. But then again, if the QB didn’t have all day to go through each and every read, this wouldn’t be an issue. We need to get more push up front, that would help tons. Great win though. Bolt Up!

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

He’s the only one Stef. That’s a lot of money to waist but that’s what’s happened. With a #6 ranked offense we haven’t got a chance to go anywhere with Paganos 27th ranked defense. Something has to change next season. Maybe Rex Ryan will be available.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I would love Rex so much

  • PakMaN

Agreed, this year’s draft should be focused on O line and defense. Not a single receiver or RB should be picked up. Matthews will continue to improve, and we’re set for the QB position for a few more years.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i still think we need a receiver. did you see brown on sunday?

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

We do need Brown’s replacement too, he’s the Derek Cox of the offense. We seriously need to replace every corner on the team, Wright is up there with cox on the terrible list too. Probably should sign one FA CB and draft 2.

        • Sergio Quintero

Tutu better start playing more, as soon as he’s in the game Rivers is looking for him, and plus he’s bigger and faster than Brown.

      • tubbs45

He looked lost, slow, maybe smoking out with Bowe before the game was a bad call.

      • Sergio Quintero

Brown should be benched, the only question is: Is Ajirotutu a true solution or do they need to draft/sign a WR next year to start. Hopefully Floyd can play next year, have a feeling the injury scared him into retirement.

        • Bolthead17

I say if a decent WR is there in the 4th then yea, it really depends on how FA plays out. But rounds 1&2 should be defensive tackle and CB

          • Sergio Quintero

In the first round I would go with a OLB, pass rush is the key to the defense in a passing league, ask the Chiefs if they missed their OLB’s yesterday.

So if guys like Khalil Mack or Kyle Van Noy are available when the chargers pick put me down for one of them.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            i heart Van Noy!

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Even more reason to play Tutu

    • Sergio Quintero

The chargers need a backup RB, this should be Ronnie Brown’s last year, he basically has no juice left in those legs. No more than 3-5 round guy, for those halfs and 1 game a season Mathews misses, but not having Mathews yesterday made them look clunky in the red zone again in the 2nd half.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

  • Tazzster

Its probably because the alternatives are not that great. If Richard Marshall is better it is not by much – he definately does not like to tackle people.

Unfortunately we are still in playoff contention. If that were not the case I would say let the guy on the bench that you are trying to develop get some reps…. because Cox will not be back next year.

    • Alex Pitrofsky

It’s unfortunate that we’re in playoff contention?

      • Tazzster

Only in the aspect that we are not developing talent at the cost of wins. Where is Brandon Taylor?

Plus, I don’t think we will win 4 playoff games if we got there. One would be surprising, Two would be absolutely, incredibly, unbelievable….. and beyond that, they will start comparing it to the miracle on ice

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

It’s so sad. Our secondary is so bad. And we thought Cason and Jammer were bad

      • Tazzster

is it too late to bring them back?

      • Tyreece Kaete Sr.

Yhats not the problem, the probleIs hes in the wrong system and hes not being used to his strength

  • tubbs45

Defining insanity: trying the same failing tactics over and over and getting the same results. we confirmed last week that cox just doesnt cut it, wont cut it, and cant cut it. Bring in Namdi, even if it is just to kick the tires… Seriously could he be worse?

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Man I was thinking about plummeting draft stock when KC took the lead, now were in the playoff hunt again……crazy stuff. Cox will be cut when the season is over, can’t wait for the next guy cause this dude is seriously the worst.

  • Mark Viguri

Sunday was ugly, Cox plays right up on the line of scrimmage but didn’t jam Avery who blew right by him for 2 big plays. Marshall came in and played 9 yards off the line and Smith never threw his way instead choosing to pick on Wright for most of the game. Right now Chargers don’t have a corner that can bump and run.

  • Adam

What’s up guys? Man I have given up on Cox…I was excited about him after his interviews with Ricky Henne (btw I would be much better at his job lol) and seeing his enthusiasm and attitude, but damn, he sucks! Smh

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

whuttup adam!!!! wHERE HAVE YOU BEEN BRUDDA?

      • Adam

I’m good man! It’s been a while…I started going to school to become a radiographer(x-ray technologist) and it’s an ex celebrated program so I’ve been super busy, but I always read all things bolt beat. I feel the need to mix it up with some chiefs fans with u man! GO BOLTS!!!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

    • Tyreece Kaete Sr.

He’s not in the righjt system

  • Cgoodness13

He does get burnt a lot, that said our DB coach seems to be terrible, plus we are pretty much a 3-5 defense the way Pagano is playing Weddle

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Was thinking about writing about this DB coach soon

  • Rob Base

I don’t think he will be back. I hope he’s not back. Dude is terrible that boy needs some wheaties.

  • Sergio Quintero

Need to spend some real money on a CB, some names to keep look out for: Brandon Browner, Aqib Talib, Vontae Davis, Brent Grimes. If any of those guys is not franchised time to pull out the check book. And yes they have to sign a corner, this franchise has zero history for the last 15 years of developing elite corners.

In terms of why is he starting and playing, same question is directed at Vincent Brown, 0 catches/yards in a game your QB throws for 392. I thinks its time to get Ajirotutu some more playing time, he appears to have more of Rivers trust, plus he brings a stretch the field element to his game.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      • Sergio Quintero

I really like Vontae Davis, but I’ll bet he gets franchised, Talib seems like a head case don’t know if the chargers will go there, I would.

In terms of Cromartie he left under sour terms, doubt he comes back, if he does its because its the most money.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

more saying that we actually drafted and groomed him, then kicked him off. dont think he will be back.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

This is what Cox reminds me of… for those of you who have been to Disneyland, and ridden on “Pirates of the Caribbean”.. lol.
You only ever see the back of his head & jersey, as he trails the receiver… arms straight out, trying to grab the receiver’s shirt for a PI call, instead of a TD… without ever getting his head turned around!

  • arnie

    I….I just can’t. I can’t do this anymore….. SMH

  • Bill Nichols

What the hell is the deal with Taylor?? Does he have coodies or something? Haven’t seen him on the field yet, get rid of freaking cox sux for crying out loud. Enough already. On another note, sure was funny watching Jammer last night, same old Jammer………. lol Bolt Up!!

You guys are stupid. You only look at the plays cox gets burned on. You don’t look at all the times he doesn’t. You take one or two plays he gives up a game and judge him based on that and ignore the 50 others he isn’t getting burned on. When he isn’t getting burned, he’s way better at coverage than Marshall would be, if our starting corners were wright we would lose games before they even started. While Marshall may not get burned like cox does, every single other play he’s gonna be a little worse in coverage than cox is which adds up. The point is, even though cox gets burned, he’s the only corner we have who had the talent to cover number one receivers. You put Marshall one number ones, maybe he doesn’t get noticeably burned once or twice, but he’s gonna give up more short and intermediate plays that cox is better at covering, which will be just as significant and more. If u took cox off the field, we would get destroyed even more so than we do. Basing a players talent off one or two plays a game is so idiotic.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

You make yourself look stupid every time you write here. Thanks

    • Tyreece Kaete Sr.

True and also Wright. &Cox dont have great 40times
