Chargers Do What They Normally Do: Lose

I don’t understand this team. The Chargers are doing everything they can in order to prove that Norv Turner was right when he left. The Chargers defense is a joke. This Miami Dolphins team finished with 4 yards last weekend and lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We are ridiculously bad. I am ready to admit it. I am ready to say that this team is terrible.

The offense can’t score touchdowns and it is the reason why the Chargers didn’t win again. We settle for field goals all the time down in the dead zone.

This is another game that we let get away. Another game that we should have won. We can’t win the close games and it always comes back to the field goals that we settle for in the red zone.

What the heck is up with the team’s tackling also? Nobody on the Chargers defense wanted to win this game. Multiple missed tackles by everyone on the defense. Just a sad effort for a Chargers team that was fighting for a playoff spot.

I guess I will stop talking about the playoffs now. Sadly, everyone except for the Miami Dolphins lost and we are still just a game out of that stupid race. My hope has been crushed with this loss though.

Well… I think its time to start talking draft now.

    • boltingindiego

1st pick LT, CB, or NT.

      • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Gotta be CB. That secondary is atrocious.

      • boltup

        Corner back jason verett

        • navw21

He’s only 5’9″ we already lose with small corners. I would rather get Justin Gilbert from Oklahoma State. Dude would come in and be our #1 CB.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

            Brent Grimes is 5’9

        • Brandon Reisinger

By far the best CB in the draft IMO. He’s the type that will bait a QB into throwing the ball his direction just so he can get a pick. Old school Deion style.

    • Tazzster

I agree. The season is shot. If you can figure out how to beat the reeling Dolphins, you might as well just pack it in.

    • arnie

As long as New coordinators come before it. Better players will get you better results. Better play calling and schemes will win more games.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yes…. But, they will both probably be retained, as you said yesterday.

  • Campbell Parker

Currently this is a very bad team. Your take is spot on. I do see a glimmer of hope for the offense, but our defense is a joke. They absolutely can NOT tackle, can NOT cover & can Not get off the field in crucial situations. Very tired of looking towards the draft this early in the season. My wife just shakes her head as to why I put myself through this. I just love my Bolts I guess…

    • John Bauer

      Me to !

  • the only sane person here

Yes it sucks (ALLOT) that we lost…. but if there is still a chance at playoffs theres no reason to give up. I’ll keep my hopes alive till there is literally 0 chance at playoffs.

    • Tazzster

      good luck with that….

      • the only sane person here

Well I guess I just can’t give up on the bolts no matter how bad things get.

        • Tazzster

I can’t take the pain anymore. This team refuses to step up and play well, like we have seen at points during their season. Instead they constantly play down to the competition. They are horrible on the road…. among other things…

Like I said… I can’t take it anymore. I will just expect them to tank the rest of their games like this one. LETS START PLAYING FOR A BETTER DRAFT PICK!…. oh wait they already started

  • Stan Zab

If you had 0 hope from the getgo you wouldn’t be as disappointed. I actually started to think that I may have been wrong with my pessimism, I thought this team was actually capable of something after the Colts win. But now we’re back to reality. Still sucks a little cause I was on the verge of changing my mind. Hopefully we can have as good of a draft as this last one in the offseason, this team will definitely not get worse talent wise.

  • Rob Base

Can’t wait till draft day. Dear Mr. Telesco please get a CB for the Bolts 1ST RD pick.

  • Tazzster

The defense was horrible. The secondary is a joke. Missed tackles. We give receivers a 5 yard cushion all over the field. It is laughable.

And the RedZone problems continue…. Are you FREAKING kidding me? They have had all season to figure that out. That is all on Ken Whisenhunt. We need a new Offensive Coordinator next season – One that can figure out how to score touchdowns.

    Embarrassing loss.

  • boltup

    Lovie smith anyone?

    • arnie

Good suggestion, I’m going with Brian Stewart.

    • Gunnar Martin

I’ve been wanting that since week 1. That was all I needed to know that we needed a new DC. Smith would be a great choice.

    • FitzWilly

      Sold :)

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

We need good players, way too soon to change coaches. Surely somebody out there can tackle.

      • boltup

        Not mccoy its pagano

        • Daryl Peek

I’m jump for joy if our defense was as bad as it was last season.

        • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

Yea, I’m not happy with what I’ve seen out of him. Maybe at the end of the season.

    • Brandon Reisinger

Lovie has already publicly said he will not take a coordinator position. Why would he?

  • boltup

I know i love the chargers but this team is very very frustrating to watch like cmon it takes 13 seconds to set up a freakn play frok 20 seconds to 7??!! Wtf

  • boltup

Time to move to LA and fill up the stadium san diego doesnt deserve this fuckn team for shit

    • Alex Pitrofsky

Why should they move? Becuase they get 60,000 people in a stadium that holds 68,000. Did you watch the game today in Miama? There were like 30,000 people at the game

    • Stefanie Smith

LA couldn’t fill the stadium when the Raiders or Rams were there, which is why they moved.

    • 1961 Fan

How is moving going to produce a winning team?

  • Eddie Cesena

    yup

  • Will

Here comes all the pathetic chargers fans bashing their own team. But if u idiots would actually be realistic for a second, u would realize that the playoffs are still a possibility IF they can beat Kansas City next week (which is definitely possible). Based on the schedules of all the other teams in the hunt for the 6 seed, the Chargers only need 9 wins to make it. And sure, winning 5 of the last 6 seems hard, but when you look at the chargers schedule, it isn’t really. Now remember, this is IF we beat Kansas City, otherwise it is over. So if we do, that leaves Cincinnati, the Giants, Kansas City again, and Oakland, ALL OF WHICH ARE IN SAN DIEGO!! (And I’m excluding the Denver game because there’s no chance in hell the chargers win that one). So before you all freak out, take a chill pill. At least for ONE more week. The Chargers are only ONE GAME BACK FROM THE SIX SEED. the season isn’t over. Yet.

    • the only sane person here

I’m with you on that we can’t give up till its truly over.

It sounds like his powder blue panties got in a wad.

    • navw21

Truthfully your are right. It’s not over. But after watching what they have been putting on the field do you really expect them to do any of the things you just wrote. If they can pull all that out of their asses do you think they could win against playoff caliber teams.

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

Season isn’t over. Yet. Yes it is. Were a long way from being a good team. One draft isn’t going to do it. McCoy and Telesco have got a lot of work to do to make the Chargers a winner. They’re going to need a lot of fan support to do it.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

The talent level is bad, but the coaching is more atrocious. Whisenhunt is the main reason we are losing… which makes it McCoy’s fault.

        • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

I disagree Pete. The Chargers had 400 yards Sunday but couldn’t punch it in. Rivers has the goal line calls after he reads the defense. Our O line was dominated by the dolphins D line. Right now we have a bunch of players that were discarded from other teams. The way things are going we should get some great draft choices. Clary was manhandled all game. Even Fluker had trouble.

    • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

No chill pills and no ifs. Team has to own up and move forward. Playoffs or not. Win games period. Disappointed in this performance! Unacceptable!

    • Brandon Rios

They just lost to the dolphins and you still think they’re going to make the playoffs? They are not a playoff team. They need at least 2 more drafts to be legit contenders.

    • Derek

Really… Did u just say take a chill pill!!! Worst choice of words. What’s the point of going to the playoffs if we know we’re too weak to beat a depleted team that’s going through a rebuilding step also. This game shows we have no chance beyond the first rd. I’m not saying I expected a ring but I think me along with every fan has high hopes especially with a new coach or gm or high draft pick. Now that that dream is dead it’s about helping telsco out rather than win pointless games.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Pride, and a winning culture. That is the point.

    • joerockt

lol, Bill Johnston, is that you?

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Dude called it…aside from the not beating Denver thing.

  • navw21

I will always be a die hard San Diego Chargers fan but I am so sick of the ineptitude they show every week. Our D is horrific and our Offense folds at every critical play. Just once I would like to feel know what it feels like to follow a winner.

  • Daryl Peek

This is the losing streak reality the team is now faced with. We are now in last place in the division and the Faiders have the wildcard tiebreaker over us. I’m so disgusted with this team I can’t see straight!!!!!

  • boltup

    LA anybody

  • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

Time to watch the Donkeys get beat.

  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

I would definitely not mind if Lovie Smith came on board next season as defensive coordinator. Offense will improve next year with the draft but defense does seem to need a boost in coaching. Keep pagano in a smaller roll.

    • Stefanie Smith

Lovie wants a head coaching job–the whole enchilada.. not playing second fiddle to somebody who knows less than he does.

  • Trey P

Forget the Defense our offense needa big men up front you block rivers we win the game our d only gave up 20 even tho they are bad but our offense only scored 16 the games are won in rhe trenches we need d linemen and o olinemen..we have playmakers to run the ball amd pass we just get no push..

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Cox should be left in Miami, Te’o man I hope he’s not a bust but he’s playing like a backup. Why was cox playing 12 yards off of Hartline? Such a frustrating game, even the hail Mary went to the one guy that it shouldn’t. VB can go somewhere else next year too, Allen & someone else should be the starters. 0 receptions to WR’s in the first half is unacceptable. I’m ready for draft pick talk and possibly going 5-11 that should be the goal from here, this defense can’t tackle anybody, its like a disease that’s spreading to each guy. Gilchrist isn’t a SS and that needs to be addressed, he’s a freaking corner and plays like one.

  • ericpadden

The conservative, predictable play calling is costing us game after game after game and I am sick and tired off it. We keep acting like we have something to protect and are playing not to lose. We need to be aggressive and play to win from start to finish. I don’t want to hear “if we win at the end than nobody second guesses us” again from MM or Wiz either. They need to change their tactics. I was fuming all through the game and I knew our scared, predictable play calling was going to cost us in the end, again. We need our play callers to grow a pair and start calling plays that go for the jugular early and often because the game is always on the line and we don’t want it to come down to last play.

  • Alex Pitrofsky

Our red zone offense makes me sick. We could actually win these games if it weren’t for the crappy play calling once we got inside the 20

  • Pingback: Chargers Articles From Great Bolt Blogs November 17, 2013 | The Bolts | San Diego Chargers Blog

  • Stefanie Smith

For all the talk about how crappy Shaun Phillips and Jammer were, they sure were out there making plays for the Broncos…. Nice.

  • Stefanie Smith

I love Fluker, but he did horrible on the left side. I saw him falling down–slipping. Get a decent o-line. The King is not going to cut it. There is a trend here of him being out more than in. Sorry. — another bust due to not being able to consistently play.

  • John Bauer

Can we switch # 17′s with Miami ?

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Whatevs….. Let’s beat the Chiefs next week! Go Chargers!!!!!

When will Whisenhunt use Mathews & Green to their full potential? Mathews was clearly the best player on the field yesterday with 127 yards on 19 carries (NO FUMBLES… again). That’s 6.6 yards per carry. He should have gotten 20-25 or more carries… not 19. I think I read somewhere that when Mathews gets over one hundred yards, and 20+ carries, that we win those games. It doesn’t surprise me whatsoever that Whisenhunt would stop him at 19 carries & 127 yards on the day. He should have that stat tattooed backwards on his forehead. Green was also our leading receiver with 4 catches for 81 yards… that’s 20.3 yards per catch.

I just don’t get why they won’t use him or Green in the red zone. We can bitch about the talent level (which isn’t great), but THAT is why we are “losing close games”. The talent level is bad, but “fake it until you make it”. As bad as the defense was, they held the Dolphins to 20 points. That isn’t an insurmountable number. You just have to score touchdowns, not field goals. That starts & ends with Ladarius Green & Ryan Mathews. Perhaps they will learn… perhaps.

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Have the players still not bought in to the system??? I’mat a loss 4 WTH is going on…

  • joerockt

Again, a mix of stupid plays (Liuget), lack of play makers (Cox’s missed easy pick six) doomed this team to another loss. Its truly amazing how many games this year amounted to 1 or 2 plays that made the difference in a loss. Can you imagine what a difference the season would have been with a decent secondary with corners who can defend more than 1 or 2 passes in a game? Or with a FS who doesn’t get trucked when trying to make a “tackle”? Weddle should be trade bait for a draft pick. Cox should be living on the streets. Gilchrist has no business playing SS and Wright is pedestrian at best.

Defensive players have to be the focus for next year. I think Pagano is doing the best he can with the players he has. When you have a rookie and a 3rd stringer as your OLB’s and a secondary playing they way they do, you can only do so much. Te’o I fear is going to be another “project”.

Silver lining has been Mathews. He finally did what I was looking for and that was to break off a couple of long runs. We need that from an RB. Hope he keeps it up for the rest of the season. Teams will have to start taking notice and that’s when Rivers will make them pay. I was on the trade him side of the fence for a while but he’s made serious improvements over the course of the season to at least get back up on the fence and take notice.

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Trade away Cam while u r at it….No D Line pressure leaves this secondary exposed all day

  • boltup

It shows the difference from the good quarterbacks to elite rivers took way to long to set up the plays in the last 2 minutes

  • John

No matter what we lost that game yes… But did anyone notice the 1 second left on the clock when the ball hit the ground??? Anyone??? The ball actually bounced twice… How did not one person on the Chargers staff notice this??? That is one more attempt at trying to win that game!!! MAybe I am just taking crazy pills, but it seems there should be a little more attention to detail…

  • I TOLD YOU SO!!!!

LOOK..THIS IS EASY…. McCOY IS A PUSS… HE IS TURNING EVERYONE ELSE ON THIS TEAM INTO A PUSS….. THERE IS RISK…AND THERE’S CALCULATED RISK… HE CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 2…..WERE ON 1RST AND GOAL 6 INCHES..NOTHING!!!.. WE KICK ON 4TH AND ONE ON THE OPPONENTS 25 YARD LINE??? THE TEAM IS NOT PREPARED…. THAT’S A COACHES JOB…YOU DON’T USE RYAN .TO RUN THE BALL IN ALL THE 1RST OR 2ND HALF OR AT THE GOAL LINE???..YOU DONT BRING IN YOUR “JUMBO”SET ON GOAL LINE WITH A LEAD BLOCKER.??? WHEN THERE ..YOU CALL A FADE ROUTE?? OR A “SHOTGUN” FORMATION”?? LISTEN RETARD!!! HERE’S THE PLAY…… PULL EVERYONE POWER SWEEP LEFT OR RIGHT!!!! YOU WILL MAKE IT IN AND THEN YOU CAN TURN THIS TEAM INTO MEN!!! THIS TEAM HAS LOST FAITH IN IT’S COACH…HOW DO I KNOW??? THERE NOT EVEN GETTING MAD ANYMORE WITH THE LOSSES..THEY EVEN EXPECT IT…..THIS IS 100% PUSS McCOY’S FAULT…..
