Good News On Derek Cox Contract

Just saw some good news on the Derek Cox contract from a tweet by Kevin Acee:

Thank goodness we didn’t get stuck with a player on a bad contract. A.J. Smith had done that to us right before he left and it hurt in the offseason when we were trying to bring in talent from free agency.

Cox has been playing awful this season. That missed tackle against Julius Thomas to start off the game was one of the worst efforts I had seen. It has been frustrating watching him cover receivers this year. He was brought onto the roster to lock down receivers, but he has been getting burned from day 1. If he can’t turn things around in a hurry, he likely will be out of a job soon and we won’t get totally screwed with his contract.

    Suck it Cox.

      In Soviet Russia…

Sorry I had to put it out there, nothing against you.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

If we are not going to allow him to ever play press man and he continues at his sucky pace I would cut him the day the season ends. Thank God we have Stevie Williams coming back or we might have to draft an entire new young waay more athletic group of rookie CB’s. I still think we need to draft 2 or 3. If we somehow end up with a comp. pick I’d let that be the bonus CB and draft 3.

    • Gunnar Martin

With all the needs we have, I don’t see us drafting that many. But we will definitely need a stud to play corner from the earlier rounds. We might try to patch it up via free agency, but you can see how well that worked out with Cox. But as they say, if you fail once, try try again…

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I dunno man, we need 2 if we get a comp pick that’s a total bonus and not like we have depth (I’d seriously cut ever CB on the team not named Williams).

        • Gunnar Martin

Never seems to work to start so many rookies, especially at corner. Maybe we can get Gilly back at corner. At least that would help a little.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

word, I think a couple top tier rookies might look better then our #1 & #2 we have now. Hard to say cause someone like DJ Hayden become complete nightmares and you have to start all over again. Maybe pickup a vet for #1 or 2 and draft a stud in the 1st or 2nd. Get a solid NT in the first couple rounds as well and then there’s SS, I think SS should be handled in FA not many rookies worked out this year expect Vaccaro but everyone knew he was a beast and the best of the litter.

          • Nick in PB

Rookie corners hardly ever star right away. It’s rare. We really need to find another decent FA corner and also draft one. I’m going to give Sherese a pass right now. He is still young and has time to improve. I think he has the skill set but he’s just not putting it together so far. We just can’t seem to get that position right, not in years!

      • Joel Ayala

We have Stevie Williams in this year’s draft. let’s hope he’s pretty good. and draft another next year as well.

        • Jake

I think we NEED to hope he’s pretty good. I also think that we can’t afford to take the AJ Smith method to fixing our DB issue. Smith was notorious for trying to draft lineman in the late rounds/sign undrafted FAs out of college and mold them into a great line. He had his run of magic, but ultimately this method didn’t work out in the end- rusulting in the makeshift o-line we have now (which, by all means, has played their tails off and deserve a lot of credit)
I think we need to be a player in free agency and possibly draft a stud CB in the first few rounds, given there is one available wherever we end up in the draft. After seeing Telesco’s first draft, he’s got my confidence and hopefully he can get our defense turned around

    • Nick in PB

I agree there. Some guys just aren’t cut out to play zone. Maybe a more physical style would suit him better. I don’t know. What I do know is it’s not working now. I keep expecting to see improvement but it’s not happening.

Wright got burned for 2 TDs and Thomas blew by Gilchrist for 2 TDs yesterday and Cox is the bust? Acee how about getting Derek’s side to the story. In the last 2 games both the RGIII and Peyton only scored a single touchdown, only 7 points when cox was playing. Cox played the first half and into the 3rd quarter vs. the Redskins and after the first series Cox played the fourth quarter when the Chargers Dee shut down the Broncos. BUT both teams scored 3 TDs a piece while Derek was benched. Cox is by far the best corner the Chargers have. Why is Pagano giving away games by playing Patrick and Marshall instead of Cox? Scoreboard doesn’t lie and why has Pagano been given a pass from the media on this?

    • Jake

I don’t know what games you’ve been watching, but Derek Cox has been absolutely horrible. He’s right when he says his effort against Julius Thomas’ TD in the first quarter might have been the worst I’ve ever seen. I’m not saying Richard Marshall and Jonny Patrick are better options at CB, but Derek Cox does not deserve to be playing next year.
As for blaming Wright and Gilchrest, here’s my say. Shareece is a first year starter that still isn’t ready for that role. He has had his ups and downs, but his inconsistency has clearly shown. Gilchrest is a corner playing safety because of the lack of options we have opposite Weddle. He played a little safety in college, but this is his first year playing it in the NFL — obviously a huge difference. Derek Cox on the other hand came in to be our lock down, #1 receiver – and has arguably been the worst CB on our defense all year. The expectations for him compared to the other DBs you speak of isn’t even close, which is why he is shouldering much of the blame.

      • shane

jake, i dont think he’s arguing your point, he’s saying that cox is the best corner we got, a tough point to argue. is he falling way short of expectations? yes, but benching him for guys that were cut from previous teams is not the answer. let the guy play press, let both corners play press, they’re much better pressing and not in this soft zone, db’s coach or pagano is blowing the play calling in that regard. not sticking up for cox blowing it, but benching him is not the best option. at this rate, he still should be cut next year though, as of now, he’s AT LEAST one of our top two cbs

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Dude. .. he needs to stay benched. If Patrick, Marshall, or even Crezdo is in there… that tackle on Thomas is made.. or at least he gets pushed out of bounds. That’s not the first opening drive HUGE mistake he has made. He screwed us in Oakland on the first play from scrimmage too.

        • arnie

True shane. But Jake pointed out something i’ve harping on all year, “context”.

  • Cgoodness13

    So is Nnamdi available?

  • Rob Base

    That’s the best news ever!

  • Joel Ayala

And then he’ll sign next year with the Donkeys. Hahahaha. man that report Acee did just made my day

  • blu3ny3llow

  • 619chargers4life

    That’s awesome !!!!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Dude… They let him press in say least two games, and he was awful at it. The reason he is being played ten yards off is because its the only chance he has of not getting burned by guys like Andre Johnson, or Desean Jackson, or Kenny Britt & Washington, or Dez Bryant, or ROD EFFING SREETER, or Hayward-friggin-Bey, or Cecil whatever the eff his name is from Jacksonville, or Pierre Garcon, or Julius Thomas.. and I’m not even mentioning all of them.. go back and watch the games. .. he got BURNT by all of those guys.. and I mean not-even-close “what’s going on here?” thumb up his butt kinda burnt. He is not really much better than Patrick whatsoever. He outta also showing zero improvement. At least Wright, Patrick, and Marshall make an effort to tackle… Cox practically runs & hides from contact. He makes Cason look like Revis! When I read the headline to this story, I was almost expecting to read that his contract accidentally got torched by a 3rd receiver… because that is what has been happening to him all year. Lol.

  • FitzWilly

    Bye Bye Cocks

  • Derek

Till the third day of next season we need to focus on what he did in jax how was he able to lock down Andre when he was there. Cox was never a shut down corner but his numbers were respectable there. But yeah cut or trade him. It pains me to cut a cb when we already are short on decent ones

  • Will

You guys are fucking pathetic. U call yourselves chargers fans and just talk shit about your own players. This loss wasn’t cox’s fault. There was simply no way we were gonna beat Denver with this defense. Peyton slaughtered them like they were a JV team. It’s embarrassing to watch. And don’t act like they played good in the second half either. Denver had such a big lead they could play conservative. They just as easily picked us apart like they did in he first half had our offense actually kept it close. What happened, when they made it close? Oh yeah, they decided to tried again and lo and behold we couldn’t stop them and they ran out the clock. Cox is just as responsible as all of them, and based on how they’ve played, they should all be cut. Not one of them has played great or been reliable to actually play in every game. To single out cox is a joke.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

arent you the guy that hated on Keenan Allen. SHUT UP ALREADY!

    • tubbs45

Will fans Will talk shit about players that play like shit. Cox is our highest paid corner, as such, cutting him if continues to play shitty is common sense. Watch the game film cox played awful, wright was marginally better… It is funny to read your horseshit comment that clearly indicates cox sucks, but fails to address the key issue of the post, TT gave the chargers an escape with his contract.

Spend some of that money on Aqib Talib or Jairus Byrd

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

would love either… even dominique rodgers-cromartie

  • arnie

Done like a “good” GM should do. Make the FA EARN his money.
