Chargers 20 – Broncos 28: Chargers Trade Field Goals to Broncos TDs

The San Diego Chargers put in a good effort against the Denver Broncos today, but the effort didn’t get the team a win. They battled and the defense was able to get to Peyton Mannning. They hit him often and the defense held strong in the second half, but the offense was unable to come up with the big plays in the end in order to get the win.

The offense struggled in the red zone again in the first half. We still can’t find ways to get touchdowns in the red zone. That has to be the biggest reason why the team is missing out on some of these wins. We had to settle for field goals 3 times in the red zone and we were unable to make the field goal on one of them.

The Broncos offense was efficient in the first half and the start of the thirs quarter. Derek Cox put in a poor effort being the last line of defense against Julius Thomas on his run down the sideline. It was embarassing.

We are sitting at 4-5 now and need to get some help in order to make it in the playoffs. Why do I still think of the playoffs.

    Time to tank guys :(
Next year will be our year

    • Stefanie Smith

Somebody said that last year. Thought we pretty much tanked last year. Playing for draft picks is not the answer. The Jags have been doing that. You can see that strategy has served them well.

  • supersurge619er

Ima say it like this ima die hard chargers fan and I always will be but our team in general gotta step up and play more smash mouth football

  • 619chargers4life

“Playoffs, don’t talk about playoffs ” “u kidding me

  • Gunnar Martin

Well the good news from today is that the Titans lost both the game and Jake Locker for the rest of the season, which really helps our chances of staying in the playoff race. The Dolphins are in the midst of all kinds of chaos, so maybe they won’t steal the wildcard from us either. We also play them next week, so we really have our fate in our own hands.

The team I’m most scared about are the Jets because they have a really easy schedule coming up- Bills, Ravens, Fins, Faiders, Panthers, Browns, and Fins again. If they lose three or four of those games, the Bolts have a legitimate shot. There IS still reason for hope.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      See!

    • Tazzster

Its possible we could win the next seven….

      probable? hmmmm….

      • Gunnar Martin

Five more wins on the year would get us to 9-7, which would (most likely) get us in. It is doable.

        • 1961 Fan

Tell us what five of the remaining seven games are you predicting we win?

          • Gunnar Martin

Well I never said that we will definitely win five, but that’s what will happen IF we get five wins. Not gonna be easy considering our schedule. It is POSSIBLE that we get wins @ Miami, at home vs Bengals, at home Giants, at home vs Raiders, and at home vs Chiefs. And I doubt it but we COULD get a win @ Denver or KC, seeing that there was a chance for us to beat the Donkeys this last game, and division games can always go either way no matter how good both teams are. I’m just saying that we don’t have to start mock drafting now with half of the season left.

This coaching staff is late to the party…. and by that I mean this…. I am not a pro football coach, and I still know they are running the wrong plays at the wrong times, and keeping the right players on the bench, when they could be contributing. If their goal was to “flash potential, but not reach it”, then this season was a success. So far, it looks like more retardedly conservative play calling for the next God knows how long. I expect to be in fourth place indefinitely, unless somebody grows a pair on this staff.. I am not holding my breath.

    • Joel Ayala

      Bro good effing point.

    • Blue&gold_blood

Dude, exactly … F man. Their offense the way they use players and call plays it’s bs. They so scared. Today on 4th and long they call a bs short slant to Allen. Their offense it’s so predictable . The draw run doesn’t work it’s bs. Try next stuff. Their passing it’s getting old quick. And boring . Sure it’s nice stats but obviously it’s doing us no good. Short pass short pass check down when it’s not stupid draw runs . Don’t get me started with our secondary . I was there at the game . Such a disappointment . Dude they need to take deep down shots ….

    • Stefanie Smith

You are so right, Pete. Even a novice like myself could see when it changed. Even the commentators were saying that you will not beat Manning with zone coverage and inquiring why the Chargers were not doing it differently.

Personally, I am tired of always having to wait until next year.

    • joerockt

I was so annoyed that Ronnie Brown was in there for a number of plays instead of Woodhead.

Oh, and Mathews shall forever be know to me as Jack Tripper. I’ve never seen a guy get tripped and stumble as much as he does. Guy barely lifts his knees when he runs, so his feet are like 2 inches off the ground. He needs to watch some Roger Craig film.

  • Tazzster

Just like we said early this week Ernie…. It would come down to red zone efficiency on both sides of the ball. We couldn’t make the Broncos settle for FGs and they made us settle for 3 attempts. Really the whole difference in the game. We played good enough to beat them we just lost it in the red zone

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Number one reason for losing multiple games… Derek Cox.. replace him with a better player… you have a chance.

    • Gunnar Martin

Can’t see him back next year. No way.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

He blows games before they even start. Did it in Oakland, and today.. the rest he just blew during the game.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Ya he needs to go, what a freakin wuss. Your a NFL starting corner, how can you be scared to tackle? I’ve seen him bail out on so many tackles, hiding behind our guys or running into a blocker to take him self out of the play. This dude needs to go away, not giving him any more chances.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I bet he will be back.

        • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

He will with that contract that he has.

          • Stefanie Smith

Yes, plus whether you guys want to admit it or not, TT, like many others, has an ego and his job on the line. I highly doubt he is at the stage of being willing to admit that Cox is a bust.

      • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

He was signed to a four year contract. I wonder if it’s guaranteed?

        • Gunnar Martin

They can still cut him. No amount of a dead money hit would be too big to keep from releasing him. Kind of like Meachem.

          • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

He plays like he wants to be cut.

          • Stefanie Smith

He got a pretty good bonus and guaranteed deal… I would not say it was as bad as the Meachem deal, but pretty close. He has a little over $4Million coming next year and also for 2015 and 2016. There is also a hit we take for a prorated bonus we gave him. Basically, it comes to $8150,000 in dead money for next year and much lower for 2015 and 2016. Go to http://www.overthecap.com and click on Cox’s name for the details of his deal. If we released him, it would not help,

    • Stefan O

Agreed. I say either draft CB/OT, first two rounds of draft in 2014.

      http://www.boltsninersblog.com/week-10-summary-broncos-at-chargers/

    • Sergio Quintero

Sounds like Verrett (TCU), Olomu (Oregon), should be around the pick the chargers should have. I would still consider giving big time money to Aqib Talib, its time to get a proven stud to this team, and have somebody who you can really build your scheme around.

  • boltingindiego

Couple of plays that killed us the dt screens, the te td, the rivers slide that came up short, and the horrible late game neutral zone infraction which was clearly false start on the TE. Also brown dropping the td.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

And the holding penalty on John Phillips early in the game which was HUGE
Mathews best run EVER and it was called back. Smh

      • doomedby2020

Ya but that block is what allowed Mathews to run….

  • boltingindiego

Butler missing the int which than led to the screen td pretty much sums up our season. We had a chance to make a play which we didn’t and than the other team made us pay for it.

  • Dave

Nice last drive! Fumbles, penalties, sacks, etc. etc. Typical Chargers lack of fortitude and tenacity when needed. And that is after their snakebit offensive line getting injuries. Dunlap is going to be out for the season I’m sure. Who knows about the rest of the line. The Spano’s really really have bad bad juju against them and this team.

  • Joel Ayala

We are missing M80 and Alexander in the red zone. big-time!! Cox sucks fucken Ass. and Marshall too. I hope Ingram comes back asap and helps put pressure on QBs man this blows.

  • Marco

Why we don’t use Ladarius Green? Just put Green, Gates, Royal and Allen. That’s all I want for Christmas

    • Gunnar Martin

I’ve been wondering that since preseason. Downright depressing.

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

We’d have the 6th seed right now if we would have beaten the Redskins
The playoffs are possible but it’s going to be very hard.

  • cody s

Pshh. Playoffs is outta the question.
I’m concerned on if we will even finish with a .500 record..

The rest of the season will be about deciding who will be cut before next season. This new team has made a dramatic new turn around, I see a foundation from which to build upon. Next year will be even better…

  • NativeSanDiegan

When TT was hired he stated that the Chargers goal is to win the Championship, not just get In playoffs. Sure, anything can happen once you’re in the playoffs, but you either need a mobile qb or outstanding blocking. Inevitably there is one play in one playoff game that decides it. Ex: What’s his face on Giants making a key reception by pinning the ball against his helmet while falling and fighting off the db. Stopped the Patriots perfect season. Wouldn’t have happened if Eli hadn’t bought extra time by moving around near the pocket. Philip’s been moving pretty good himself lately.
Chargers need some more talented players, and they will come in the draft. They don’t just need a higher pick in 1st rd, but also in rds 2, 3, 4, etc without giving away a precious pick to move up in a round-we sure could have had a very good player in Barret Jones from Alabama in 4th rd if we hadn’t given away our pick just to move up a few spots to get Te’o.
My personal belief is that much of our injury problems are getting us a few spots higher in a very deep draft. Some of the play calling may also be toward that end.
I believe that sitting here in Hawaii and also having been a football fan for 50 yrs gives me a broader perspective and allows me to see the “forest for the trees”. Or maybe I’m way off target. But look at the Chiefs and Colts the last 2 yrs. They were both much better than their records and I really believe there’s a method to this madness. BTW I am certain we will draft a LT because I’m afraid King is having way too many concussions .too frequently. Obviously they also need help in secondary too.

  • joerockt

Again another game of mistakes and dumb decisions.

Can anyone explain why the hell Weddle decided to take a leisurely trot to the ball during the Julius Thomas TD? I watched it over and over and had he full speed pursued to the ball he most likely would have knocked him out of bounds. Dude was slow jogging it like he thought there was no way Cox would miss him. He didn’t look injured, so I don’t know what he was thinking.

Speaking of Cox, him and Wright are just horrible. When they’re not “defending” passes, they just stand there when getting blocked and make no attempt at coming off the block or trying to avoid altogether.

Its too bad this years DB class for the draft isn’t highly rated.

  • Sergio Quintero

The schedule is downright brutal, too many games have escaped the chargers grasp, as it looks 9-7 is the best we can hope for, and honestly they should be at least 6-3 at this point. As they say this a world of is, not should be.

The second half should give us hope for the future, that Pagano has learned his lesson, that sending pressure and tight coverage is the way to go, but as I say it, but I don’t believe it will stick, the guy is too inconsistent with his play calling to believe in a lasting effect.

I recall many of you saying that Derek Cox was terrific “a great pick up” and that Mathews will have a career year. Cox was a cast off from another team that thought enough of him to cut him free. As for Mathews, the Bolts (A. J. Smith) wasted a first round choice on a third round RB, the same with Larry English who had his number called more this year that all the other years combined. If all of you will think that this year is one where we find out if TT & MM can cut it, then you can settle back and realize that the Chargers will not be contenders until the 2015 season.Hopefully those two can pick quality players to make the 2014 season interesting. For this (2013) season the Bolts may only be spoilers.
