49ers Plan To Release Nnamdi Asomugha. Chargers Have To Be Interested

Sep 15, 2013; Seattle, WA, USA; San Francisco 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (28) commits a pass interference penalty on Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate (81) during the 2nd half at CenturyLink Field. Seattle defeated San Francisco 29-3. Mandatory Credit: Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers plan to cut Nnamdi Asomugha today because they are going to activate Eric Wright off of their injured list. The San Diego Chargers have to be interested in Asomugha… right? We just benched our starting corner against the Washinton Redskins. We could use some help at corner and Asomugha could be that guy.

Derek Cox has been terrible and Asomugha could be a starter on our roster. Our secondary has been that terrible, that someone that has been released from the 49ers could come in and be a starter on our defense.

Asomugha has not been terrible this season, but he is getting released because of a numbers game. The 49ers need a roster spot for Eric Wright and Nnamdi is the odd man out. He is on a one year deal and is not part of the team’s future, so they went a different direction.

The Chargers could rent him for a season and see if he can create some spark for the defense. He used to be one of the top corners in this game. He would shut down top receivers in the game. He was just in the Pro Bowl for his performance in 2010. He can’t be that far off from that player.

The Chargers need to get in on this.

Would love to have him in Chargers Bolts. Perfect opportunity for him to stage a rebirth for his career

    • Stefanie Smith

I agree. Anything to help our defense.

      • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

I agree also. Cox has turned out to be Telesco’s first bust. The guy is terrible.

        • Stefanie Smith

And he did not come at a bargain. I think TT signed him to a multi-year deal.

          • shayaaa

            4 years; 20M

          • Michael

            ouch!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Seriously… We just need someone at corner to step up

      • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

It’s not like the current corners haven’t had opportunities to get the job done. Nnamdi Asomugha has good instincts. Could make everyone around him better. Definitely makes the depth better.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

watching our corners this year has been a struggle

          • Michael

Do you mean watching our corners struggle? or struggling to watch our corners struggle????

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            number twooooo

  • Conor Cahill

Avoid Asomugha like the plague. He is a press man corner (a la Cox) and he will fail even more than Derek Cox. He is 32 and lacks the athleticism he used to have in Oakland. His weaknesses were on full display in Philly and he cannot play zone to save his life. He would last one play in Pagano’s defense before he shows he cant play at a high level anymore and isn’t a correct fit for Pagano.

    • Daryl Peek

Agreed, our issues seem to be more of a scheme VS. personnel type in the secondary. Tho i’d like to see what Nnamdi could do for us? Maybe Pags could let both Cox and Nnamdi press on the outside

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

You telling me he’s worse then Patrick/Cox/Butler? I’d like to see some PFF focus numbers to support this. Ya right the Niners just carry some bum all year, lay down some facts.

        • Daryl Peek

Where do you get me saying he’s worse than anyone?

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

            not you, Conor

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Our corners are so good we wouldn’t answer a call from Asomugha himself.

  • Stefanie Smith

    They waived him.

  • Stefanie Smith

This is off the subject. But as to players and whether they can perform on a new team or not… I am floored as to how well Meachem is doing for the Saints. So he was capable. Maybe just did not fit in here. And thank our lucky stars that the Chargers did not sign McKinnie. Baltimore gave him a new deal then let him go.

  • arnie

Agreed. I can no longer reasonably make a case for Cox. I wanted to give him benefit of the doubt, and just let him play. I’ve seen enough, and so has the Chargers. Now i can see the answer to the question of , is it scheme, or player? IMO the scheme isn’t outstanding, however the “player” wasn’t helping.
In this situation, i believe the Chargers can’t afford to go bargain hunting for the “nameless bunch” of CB. While i would like to see another youngster step up on the depth chart, but who? Just make the call, and play more “MAN COVERAGE”.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’m glad to hear that you are on board. This guy has not shown ANY coverage skills. An odd play here and there, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

      • arnie

What can i say, anything else would be excuses. it is what it is and he wasn’t getting the job done. Mark my words, they will have a new DC next season. Unless, they move to a 4-3. Pagano doesn’t know how to run a 3-4 and the front seven dictate what the back 4 will play like. He doesn’t move the LB around and attack the weaknesses in the protection. It’s get in your spot, beat your man. What has that to do with Cox? No pressure, zone will suffer.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

They should get a sawz-all, cut the bench he sat on, leave it in his locker, and say “keep that. It’s one of a kind”. Just so he got the picture. Because he can’t get benched for Patrick ever again. It loses games. He is the key to this defense playing better, and he’s distracted. I wouldn’t be sirprised if it was off-field.

          • arnie

Peter i still think it was a learning curve, but you could be right, there are so many things players go through that we don’t know about. However, learning curves have a time limit in the NFL, the bottom line he wasn’t improving.

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

where is the Cromartie kid they r hiding on Practice Squad??

      • arnie

        Next Man Up…

  • Trey P

Get him kerry rhodes and activate melvin ingram and put dj fluker at guard on goaline plays if not run with matthews or sighn Turner. This is getting played out every year we are a what if or we could be 7-1 team when will it end smh

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’m with Trey P, sign him and Rhodes cut whoever needs to be cut to make up some $.

Anyone shooting this guy down is insane, if we bring him in at a bargain what could it hurt? Our CB group is a joke, he’s not going to make matters worse by taking Butler or Patrick’s spot.

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

at this rate, cut McClain, cut Brown, and cut CAM….FUCK!!!
Why have a FB we hardly use,a RB that Woodhead can replace, and a fucking NT that his only claim to fame is his Cam Smash t shirt……good god, this team is still far away from anything respectable….so frustating…

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Also if we were to cut Cox in the offseason how much of a Cap hit would it be vs. How much could we save by doing so?

2014 Needs to be a big fat secondary reset with Weddle as the only man safe. Seattle’s #2 and #3 CB’s want to test the market lets bring them on in.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

We would lose $2,300,000 if we cut Cox next season… he already counts $5.8 against the cap. would count 8.1 if we release him

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

lol ok so he’s staying put, damn! How does he feel about being a #4 CB

        • Joel Ayala

Looks like we’re stuck like Chuck for a bit. !! Lol.

          • Michael

Maybe we can trade him for a 7th round 2020 pick and a table cloth

  • tubbs45

He has got to be better than Cox… Right? Nnamdi has gone down hill quickly. Maybe throw him on the roster, but dude is Cox v2. I hope this is a HIGH priority in the draft and Free agency.

  • Cgoodness13

im for it, he and us can use some payback against the faiders

  • John Alton

Why not? Its not they are looking for a player to help on a play off run. Maybe he can keep them on course for an 8-8 season.

  • ……ChiefsFan……

They waived Marcus Cooper at the beginning of the season, and the Chiefs benefitted from that move (an insanely awesome move at that). Maybe the 9ers are just really bad at evaluating CB talent. I would say any team would be wise to take a flier on him.

    • ……ChiefsFan……

Also, if you want to beat the Denver Mannings you have to play press/man coverage.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

right… you all are loving that pick up right now…. amazing pick up

  • FitzWilly

    Give me Nnamdi’s #

I’ll get his ass in a Bolts uni
    Rhodes sounds good as well
The gloves are off boys and girls

    where is Marshall these days
didn’t even hear addae’s name called yesterday?

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Marshall was in there… gettin torched.

    • Mr. Guy

Rhodes is too expensive but Nnamdi could be a bargain. Besides, He can’t really make our secondary worse than it already is.

  • 619chargers4life

He seems like another Cox to me

  • jamfed

Nnamdi Asomugha is a press corner. How would he fit in San Diego. SD runs 80% zone!

  • supersurge619er

Yup I agree bring him in I think he will do well for us

  • MachoMenos

Pagano refuses to let Cox play man to man, why would he let Nnamdi?

  • Tom Spalsbury

    Welcome !

  • Michael Popowich

Secondary is our weakest position, they need to do something about it, we got some tough teams coming up.

  • Stuart Adkins

GET HIM!! WE NEED CB’S BAD!!!!!
