King Dunlap Concussion Issues Are A Concern

What should the Chargers do over at left tackle with King Dunlap. He looks like a great player when he is in the lineup, but he has suffered his second concussion of the season already. I don’t know how often these things could strike on a player, but it seems that he is getting these over and over again and this could be a recurring problem.

I wonder how much concern the Chargers have with him at the left side. We don’t have many players that can play that left tackle position on the roster. We had to slide the rookie D.J. Fluker over to the left side in his absence, but that cannot be the long-term solution for the team. Mike Harris would have been a nice player to fill-in at the position, but he is out for the rest of the year.

Where do the Chargers look now? Are we just going to ride with Mike Remmers and Nick Becton on the left side of the line? We might have to rely on them, but that sounds scary as heck. This could be a problem for us as we go forward. We will have to hope for the best recovery from Dunlap and hopefully we can find another option on the left side for us.

I’d look to swing a trade for one of the bottom 5 teams LT, Dolphins just got Mckinnie from the Ravens so maybe a similar type deal for a 6th or 7th rounder. I might also look to add 1 more NT or CB too (and get rid of Patrick). Things are looking up, TT has 2 weeks to concentrate on getting a trade done i think he will.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Anybody else want to see Geathers maybe learn how to play guard?

      • Ernie Padaon

hahahaha… i would have loved to see that fool push some people around. the next kris dielman

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

If he’s not cut out for NT why not? he’s huge huge

          • arnie

Gates was two players behind him on the depth chart. That would be insane, but I hear what your sayin’, now is not he time to panic. The Charges have been next man up through 7 games, they will get it done.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Gates? were not talking TE, I’m not saying that, I’m saying if he sucks at NT don’t play him at NT. Put him on the practice squad and see if he can be coached up to a massive gaurd. Not panicking at all he just isn’t that good at D-line.

          • Joel Ayala

Believe it or not bro. but Gates was listed as emergency LT
if Fluker would have went down too. I saw that interview. lol. man that would have sucked for Gates.

          • arnie

I’m not talkin TE either, if they lost one more tackle in the game, Gaithers was the next man up on the O-line, then Phillips and Gates two more spots down. Remember they are extra blockers on the O-line.

        I love the idea.

They should let him ride out the bye week, and sit for the Redskins game. Then, ask him how he feels by the week of practice before Denver (would be awesome if he could shut down Von Miller like he did Mathis!). If he still doesn’t feel good, let it ride another week, and go from there. It sucks to not have him, but I didn’t like watching the big guy put his face in his hands, while his leg was trembling out there on the field.

I actually thought Fluker played OK at Left Tackle. He was a little rough, but that was a big change for him. Is he just plain NOT a left tackle? I mean, Clary ain’t great, but he WAS our right tackle last year, and could hold it down for a minute. I would rather slide Fluker over, and sub in Becton & Remmers, when needed. I noticed that the run game picked up a little bit on that side too when Fluker went over there. I would much rather take our chances on him, than trade away something valuable for a fill in. We have Ohrnberger to fill Clary’s spot. Is Fluker just not capable of being a good left tackle? The guy is monstrous, determined, and plays with a heart of a lion. Are people already sold that he can’t do it?

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

It’s the same people that thought he was a reach at our pick and he ended up being the best tackle there was. So that kinda says that the media/scouts/everything can be wrong and often.

    • arnie

Ohnberger also played LT, so in a pinch he could sub.

Concussion are tricky, and there is no test that can measure a player is healed. They effect everyone differently and the symptoms can stop, but the effects could last for days, months maybe even a year, before a player can return. As to the question at hand the Chargers may just ride it out with Remmers an Becton. It isn’t like he has had concussions his whole career. So I don’t see how he’s had this over an over agin, this is his second, and once you get one, it’s easy to get two. When Dunlap is able to return, try different helmet and padding in side the helmet, also employ a neck roll. Concussions are caused by the sudden jarring of the brain inside the skull, there is gear that can reduce that impact. Use it. If it’s all about “player safety”, then go the extra mile and take the choice of wearing protective gear out of players hands.

Dunlap was concussed when a opposing player inadvertently hit the back of his helmet with his knee really hard. Probably anyone would be concussed if the exact same thing happened to them. He just happened to be unlucky and so did we when he’s not in since he’s turning out to be great at LT. The Chargers have a lot of work to do to get more OL help off the street in the next 2 weeks.

  • tubbs45

Joe D’Alessandris is a friggin magic man.

  • JoseSD

i wouldnt call it an “issue” considering that he took a knee to the back of the skull from Jason Babin. it was an accident not a recurring injury

    • Gunnar Martin

That’s what happened? How did you find out?

      • JoseSD

watch the instant replay. Philip was getting sacked and Babin was rushing to pile on while Dunlap was on his knees he banged him on the back of the helmet with his. I just disagree with the title of this article making it sound like he’s getting concussions like hes catching a cold in flu season

        • Gunnar Martin

          Touche. Good work bro

  • Bill Nichols

There isn’t a league rule for 2 concussions is there? I just don’t understand how a left tackle can be concussed seemingly so easily..?.. Most of his hits are close range, no time to build up much force. I guess unless he had a history of this type of injury. Anyone know? I sure as hell hope he gets healthy and stays that way . We really could use some consistency across the board. Wish everyone was as dependable as Rivers, dude hasn’t missed a game in for-freaking-ever. Here’s to hoping the bye will get these guys back, especially King.
