Chargers Should Look Into Adding Sam Montgomery

The Houston Texans have released 3rd round draft pick DE/LB Sam Montgomery today for violating some team rules. Montgomery was a potential first round draft pick going into the draft, but slid down to the 3rd round due to various reasons. He was one of the players that the San Diego  Chargers brought in for a pre-draft visit and seems to be a player that the team should have some interest in.

We could use depth at any position on the defensive side of the football. Montgomery was brought in by the Texans in the 3rd round and they wanted him to play outside linebacker for their defense. His skills didn’t translate well for Wade Phillips and their defense and he was moved back over to defensive end, but he barely saw the field.

He could be used on the Chargers defense as a pass rushing linebacker or a defensive end. We have had a ton of our linebackers drop this season and we could use more depth at the position. Currently, we have Jarret Johnson, Larry English, Tourek Williams and Thomas Keiser as the outside linebackers on the roster. Montgomery could help provide some pressure off of the edge and would bring more speed and depth onto the roster.

There are some questions about his motivation, but that is something that the Chargers would have to evaluate. I think he would be a player worth looking into.

Here is a look at some of his highlights from college:

Whoa, he was a big name coming out of college, what the heck did he do? They lost cushing for the year you would think they needed all their big LB’s. He must have done something really really bad like punk JJ Watt in his broken bloody nose or his cracked ribs lol.

    • Ernie Padaon

Yea… Unsure on what he did and why the Texans had no patience for it

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

something about violating team hotel rules? must of had one crazy night

        • joerockt

Probably brought dem bitches back to the room.

          • Ernie Padaon

            hahaha… was thinking the same

      • shayaaa
  • Sergio Quintero

Talent is there, supposedly has major character red flags and interviewed super poorly, it was said that only Kwame Geathers was a bad in the interviews out of all the prospects in the draft.

If the chargers do sign him it will be clear sign that Melvin Ingram probably wont be back this season, either way there is a need and the guy has talent, he will have short leash and will come cheap so go ahead and sign him.

    • Ernie Padaon

i wouldnt mind giving him a shot even if melvin comes back.

  • Daryl Peek

Pass. I think were gonna be fine at OLB. The bye will allow those nicked up time to heal. Walker is a bit undersized but has the speed. I’m digging Keiser & English. Ingram may be back in a few weeks.

    • boltingindiego

walker is an ilb. Unless your talking about tourek.

      • Daryl Peek

He’s listed on the depth chart as an OLB on

        • boltingindiego

really hes never played a down there hes been playing ilb in passing situations.

  • boltingindiego

if we do sign him we would actually have depth at this spot kieser, english, jj, tourek, and sam.

@ Ernie – “There are some questions about his motivation”
    - Those words remind me too much of Gaither… Lol.

@ Sergio – “Supposedly, he has major character red flags and interviewed super poorly”
    - Those words remind me too much of Aaron Hernandez… Lol.

I’ll pass on the Gaither / Hernandez love child, who just got cut from a struggling team for partying too hard, and acting crazy. Just a hunch.

    • Ernie Padaon

gaither… possible… but without the cap hit. it wouldn’t hurt to release him if he did something stupid.

      • tubbs45

Lotta upside with little risk… but who do you cut to make room for our new rasta mon?

        • Ernie Padaon

i would cut bront bird… but that is me… or even geathers time might be up. try to get him back on practice squad

          • tubbs45

Bront would make sense, but I don’t see them cutting Geathers. Geathers is the only other nose tackle.

  • tubbs45

There were 3 released at the same time.
“Wood and Jefferson were first-year players, and Jefferson had reportedly been kicked out of Baylor for failing multiple drug tests.”
    Drugs maybe?

  • afel120

Isacc redman rb for steelers got released I think he would be good over ronnie brown

    • Gunnar Martin

Are you serious? They cut Redman?

      • afel120

Yeah they said they like Levon bell more and moved up dwyer on depth chart

  • veazy

Thanks for the video, always enjoy watching college highlights. I didn’t get to watch the Chargers yesterday, but was Keiser really that good? If so, do you think Montgomery should be brought it in to compete for a Tourek’s ST spot, or for a bigger role on defense? If Keiser was as good as is being advertised, wouldn’t he just being going through the same things he went through with the Texans and not getting much playing time?

  • blu3ny3llow

It would be a good thing if they signed him but they to sign some more O linemen too….

  • jamfed

I liked Montgomery a lot coming out of college and I mocked-drafted the Chargers drafting him in the 2nd round earlier this year. Sam’s football values are in check, as he answered some questions at the combine a little too “HONESTLY” – There MUST be a problem for ANY team releasing a 3rd round draft pick… HMMM!

  • Gunnar Martin

Can’t hurt to bring him in for an interview. If he does better than expected, than go ahead and sign him up. Don’t put him on the active roster quite yet though, if we do get him. Got the skills, but let him pay his dues.

  • Julien Bélair

    knuckle head

  • Bill Nichols

Maybe dude made a crack about Bum’s hat or something at a very inappropriate time. Who knows, but, incentive based contracts are always worth taking a shot, if he has skills. Keep him on a short leash, and don’t let anybody contributing at the time being go to free up a slot. But I gotta say, I am really digging this Defense… Bolt Up!!

    • BillsRetarded

Lol ya really diggin that 23rd ranked defense….dumbass.

      • Bill Nichols

Fuck off chump. Big guy on the internet aren’t you bitch. Get a life loser.

  • arnie

Of course the Chargers should look into it. But consider this, with the way Keiser has played, the solid play from English and walker, add the way Manti has carried the load, and then see that JJ and Butler could be back after the break, the question is, do we really need him?
Everybody deserves second chances, but he Chargers passed on him. They cleared out all the disjunction in the locker room, and my guess would be, they are not interested in a baby sitting gig.

  • Jordan

    Looks very explosive

  • asd

Nah, he aint no Kiki Mingo, waste of time, not even as good as the proven LBs on the roster, all hype from college.

LSU does not equal to domination in the NFL, They’re overrated

Hurry up and sign this guy we could use him he’s young and as potential and could be a stud! We could even trade him for a first round draft pick
