Philip Rivers Going For 3rd Straight 400+ Passing Game

Chargers QB Philip Rivers is looking to have his 3rd straight game of 400+ passing yards. If he were able to complete the task, he would be the first quarterback in history to get that done. He already has 3 games this season in which he has thrown for over 400 yards, but he is looking for his third straight.

Throwing for over 400 yards doesn’t mean that we are going to win the game, as we saw last week against the Oakland Raiders, but it can’t hurt either since both of the team’s wins have come with him throwing for over 400.

Our defense has been so bad this year, that we have needed Philip to have games like this in order to compete. Philip Rivers has a tough task this week with the Indianapolis Colts, but I wouldn’t doubt seeing Philip having another big performance. The Colts have good players on the defensive side of the football and it will be a test for Philip.

Philip has adapted well to Ken Whisenhunt‘s offense and he looks very comfortable calling the plays out there. Hope he gets that 400… more importantly, hope he gets that ‘W’.

I wouldn’t mind 500 lol, I was reading on NFL.com that we don’t have a guy on our defense rated any higher then 30th at any position. That is really really really bad.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

was just reading that also… very very bad… i still think we have solid players on the roster, but they are not playing well

    • Calman21

Weddle should be rated significantly higher than 30th.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

nope, he will be eventually but the first 4-5 games playing safety linebacker rated him pretty low.

        • Calman21

Wow that is crazy. Although it has looked like our defense is slowly getting better, so hopefully the scores and games start to reflect that. That being said I expect the Colts to beat us convincingly. They look like a real SB contenders and we have….Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates. But we shall see, I am hoping for a win.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

We lost to the Raiders, it would make sense that we beat the Colts and then have a tough game against the Jags……anybody can win on any Sunday and our team makes sure that saying lives on true all season.

          • Calman21

Yea, last few years it has been the Chargers that lose games they should win and win games they should lose. So it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if they won. A lot of my buddies at work hate it when the team they support plays the Chargers because you never know who is going to show up.

        • arnie

Playing out of position hurts him. Weddle has been holding up the front 7 since he got here.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I know it ain’t popular.. but, I have been a little disappointed with Weddle this year. I know he is playing out of his position a lot.. but, I have seen some good & bad plays.. nothing elite. But, we’ll see.

        • Calman21

Hard to play well when you are out of position and your other team members aren’t getting the job done. If and when he can actually play his position and rely on the SS and CBs, we should see a return to form.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I understand, and I’m not getting down on him. Love me some Weddle!!! But, I’m not going to ignore what I see, either. I have re-watched all of the games, and slowed it down. Weddle hasn’t been below average, but he has not been outstanding in coverage, either. He has had some nice passes defensed.. but, he has also missed some easy assignments… HIS assignments.. not when he was helping someone else out, or playing out of position. I am not saying he is bad. But, pro-bowl isn’t what I’m seeing…. yet. Still tons of football to be played.
He (along with the rest of this new secondary) needs to get used to these changes, as well. But, I’m not going to say what I am seeing is pro-bowl elite play. Make all the excuses in the world for it, but at the end of the day, he needs to raise his level of play, just like anyone else. Being the best player on a horrible defense doesn’t mean you are playing better than any other player around the league. Having said that, I have slowly been seeing SOME improvement. Let’s hope that continues tonight… dare I say exponentially? ; )

          • arnie

Just make sure see Weddle in “context”.
There is an old cliche, don’t believe everything you read, and only half of what you see.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

and now i think i will write a post about this

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Hell ya, I’d love to read it. Can you do like a list and where each guy rates? That would be amazing

  • arnie

Numbers wise Phillip Rivers is having a great year. Coaching wise, when they learn to put the ball in Rivers hands in the 4th quarter to win football games, he could be throwing for 500+ yards a game.
Put your foot on the gas, keep the ball in Rivers hands, keep scoring, and don’t stop until the clock ticks downs to zero.
    Bolt Up!

    • Natrone means’ husky blu jeans

Every year Rivers throws for many yards and still the Chargers go nowhere. Unfortunately he is not a clutch QB which he has proven many times especially in the playoffs.

  • Rob Base

It won’t mean anything unless he doesn’t turn over the ball and gets the Bolts a W!

  • Sergio Quintero

Basically the 2 turnovers are the only major momentum changing plays the defense has had for the season, Pagano is playing the “bend but don’t break defense” to the hilt, which means very few aggressive plays calls, that put you in position to make difference making plays. I know the talent level is hard pressed to even call it mediocre, but they made Terrelle Pryor look like a damn good QB.

The reality is this team has required Rivers to throw for 400, and the offense go for 500 yards to win their games, and they need every bit of those yards. So to even consider the possibility of winning they need 400/500 again, or a major change in defensive play calling in which risks are taken.

Its sad and frustrating to watch this defense, entering the season the chargers were supposed to ride their defense, and just improve their offense slightly (20-23 ppg), and their defense would carry them to victory. I heard about them having the 9th ranked Defense, and the most of the players were young and reaching their prime, how wrong were we all.

I watch them play a static 4 man rush, with little or no deception, combined with soft off coverage, its a formula for giving up long sustained drives, it damn maddening. Pagano get through your head: 4 man static rushes with soft coverages should only be played when you have elite QB as your opponent, because he makes little to no mistakes in reading coverage, and will consistently shread you when you blitz, but that means you can be agressive with the other QB’s. The only QB’s I would play the chargers ubber conservative style is Peyton Manning & Drew Brees.

To the point Rivers better put up 400 yards, the chargers better get over 500 yards, and score over 30, because the defense is not getting any better and will give up over 30 tonight, unless there are major play calling and philosophy changes on defense.

    • Daryl Peek

“bend but don’t break defense” I 100% agree! At some point you have to let them knuckle up man to man on the outside and get after the QB with more creative and aggressive blitzes. Were already giving up the points, why not punch someone in the mouth at least.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Maybe our fans can break the sound barrier, and help this team out a little… lol. It would be nice to see our defense get off the field faster, and generate some delay of game / false start penalties.. get young Mr. Luck frustrated, and push him back. Keep their running game dormant with some 3rd & 20′s. (that would be nice, eh?)

    • Sergio Quintero

Hard to get to 3rd & 20 if you don’t make plays behind the line of scrimmage, and even harder when easy completions are to be had all over the field because of soft coverage.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I know… that’s why I was saying the crowd will have to do it with delay of game calls, and false starts…. by getting loud!

12th MAN IN DA HOUSE!!!! Hahahaha…

  • tubbs45

I dont give a crap about streaks (except Wins), yards, YAC, TAK , Ratings, etc…. Learn to win, close games, finish. Bolt Up all 4 quarters and sock it to the Colts!!!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Derek Cox & Sharrece Wright MUST have good games tonight… dare I say Patrick, Marshall, and Crezdon too… or is that asking WAY too much.. hahaha!

    • Daryl Peek

I’m kinda liking Cox to what Deion Sanders said about Darrelle Revis. “Revis is a man to man CB, Schiano is coaching him out of position. Leave that man one on one and leave him alone”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Cox is as good as Revis but he’s a better man coverage DB. I also wonder if Wright would be better in man coverage. I know we use man from time to time, I just wonder if that’s when and why we’ve fared better in the second half of our two games, defensively?

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I hear what you’re saying DP. I thought the same thing, because that is what everyone keeps saying. Then, I went back before the Raider game, and specifically watched Cox on all of the previous games. He’s not showing good coverage skills in man coverage either…. to the point where they were clearly trying to give it a shot, and decided to move him back to playing 10 yards off the receiver again… I forget which game Then, after watching those games, he got torched for another TD on the opening defensive play of the Raider game, and that’s all I needed to see. Maybe Pagano is seeing what I am seeing.. better to let the intermediate routes go, then let him get himself (and the team) get embarrassed, and kill momentum. Sadly, he gets torched either way.
The only time I see him in man coverage now, is on obvious running plays (which he is also awful at run support). Sometimes, you just have to come to terms with the facts. And so far… for me… the facts are that Cox hasn’t been good at all, outside of a few plays here & there. Perhaps that will change.

        • Daryl Peek

I can dig that but we haven’t had good coverage out of our DB’s since 2010, and this is the first season they’ve been a different group than those we’ve had since 08 or so. Steve Gregory worked well with Weddle. He’s not looking half bad in NE.

Cox is no worse than Cason IMO. Our defense has improved over the last two weeks. We were giving up much more yards prior to then. The Texans and Philly ran layup drills on us passing. The Titans ran up and down the field rushing the ball. Pryor killed us on basically two drives and was held in check there after. 3 & 14 could happen to anyone on any given Sunday. The offensive turnovers were the reason we lost to the Faiders. Really, one could say the lost turnover battle is the main reason were not undefeated. The difference between us and the Donkeys is turnovers, and defensive aggressiveness. They’re risking getting burnt in getting after QB’s.

I say we punch a few QB’s in the mouf and see how accurate they are thereafter.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Can’t disagree with any of that.

          • Daryl Peek

Cox slipped big time! Thank God for Luck. o_0

          • arnie

I hope Stan just read what you said.

          • Daryl Peek

Not sure who Stan is but I just want to see our defense get more physical!

  • Stefanie Smith

I am going to try and not look at the game, so they can win. I think I jinx them.

  • Stefanie Smith

Were the vets on the D that got the boot and now either playing for the Broncos, Jets or Colts– were they worse than we have now? If our players now are ranked at 30…were the other guys rated at 40? Before we unloaded all the vets, I read somewhere we were ranked like 12 or 15. Good that we are making progress.

  • Gunnar Martin

Come on Philip! Need you for my fantasy team tonight!!
