Chargers DE Dwight Freeney is going to have surgery for his torn quad and his season is now over also. The Chargers will be placing him on IR and he will be joining Malcom Floyd on the IR list.

This injury will hurt the team’s defense a ton. Freeney was one of the few players that could put pressure on the quarterback and he will be out for the season. The Chargers will now have to rely on Larry English and Tourek Williams to put pressure on the quarterback.

Freeney was brought onto the Chargers this offseason after Melvin Ingram went down with an injury. Freeney was brought on to be a presence in the Chargers pass rush and did a good job while he was in the game.

Now the Chargers will have to find a different way to generate pressure on the quarterback. We might have to scheme a way to get pressure on quarterbacks and we may have to use our middle linebackers more to blitz up the middle.

This should be an interesting defense.

Introducing “Coach Freeney”. After all, it wasn’t just his talents that were going to benefit this team. It was his ability to show the youngsters how it’s done, also. He can still help bring these guys up to speed… he’s just not going to be on the field. I know he (and this coaching staff) will make the best out of a bad situation.

He needs to teach everyone that deadly spin move… just do the twist….

Crazy both are out this quick this year, wish them both well in their recoveries. For some reason I can’t help think the D is going to be even more solid now with English/Kieser, it’s awesome to rack up a billion pressures but if the QB still makes the play downfield that is all it was “pressure” not sacks. Sacks takes the play away and gets the QB down in the dirt and always a loss of yards, your not going to hear “Justin Houston with the game of his life with 11 pressures”, it was “Justin Houston game of his life 4.5 sacks. I’m liking him as the linebackers coach though I’m sure he can drop knowledge on everyone hard.

I wonder if we’ll see more traditional 3-4 now with Freeny out?

    • Cgoodness13

I was thinkin the same thing, we were pretty much a 4-3 defense with Freeney.

      • arnie

Hopefully that will change. Pagano put Freeney in his natural position.

What a bummer….great pickup while it lasted.
