Chargers LB Dwight Freeney Injury: Torn Quadriceps

According to Ian Rapoport, San Diego Chargers LB/DE Dwight Freeney has torn his quadriceps. That is going to be a big time loss for the Chargers. It is believed to be a long term injury.

That is going to put a lot of pressure on the other outside linebackers and defensive linemen to produce. Dwight Freeney was one of the few players on the defense that was able to get pressure on the quarterback.

You know that it is tough times when the defense has to rely on Larry English to make plays at outside linebacker. Jarret Johnson has been playing well at the opposite linebacker spot, but more attention will be put in his direction with Freeney down.

Rookie LB Tourek Williams will also see more playing time for the Chargers. The Chargers were hurt by the injury bug at this position early in cap when Melvin Ingram went down with a torn ACL. They signed Dwight Freeney to make up for that absence. Now that Freeney is gone, I wonder what the Chargers will do in order to compensate for his loss.

So sad… We need Melvin back!

  • tubbs45

Damn it… Time to put on the big boys pants and step up English and Williams!!!

  • Cgoodness13

If it wasn’t for the crappy coverage Freeney would have had like 7 sacks already, hope for the best for him.

  • Stefanie Smith

On NFL Network, they were talking about getting pressure on the QB–specifically Matt Schaub and how he immediately folds when he gets pressure. That is our cue. Our D has to get pressure on these QBs. If it isn’t a full blown sack, it has to be close to it. You saw the same thing in the NE – Falcons game–pressure on Matt Ryan got him flustered and he made mistakes.

If it isn’t going to be Freeney, we have to find somebody else to do it.

  • Rob Base

Tourek better step into Beast mode English too? Well we will see if English can stay on the feild though.

  • Jordan

I don’t know, but I got a good feeling about tourek

  • Will

Tourek Williams???? Are you guys serious???? Damn, you guys will say ANYBODY will be super good and it’s totally based off of NOTHING…

    • Ernie Padaon

who said tourek would be good? What you think of Keenan Allen? Just going to hate your own chargers and love the players that are gone?

    • Peter Thompson

I am saying Tourek will be good. I see at least 10 sacks for him this year! Him and English have the potential to lead the league. Next man up!!!!

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I wasn’t a big believer of Next man up (Arnie’s motto) but after a bunch of nobody O-linemen hold off the cowboys and looked pretty good doing it, I am now a believer. Dudes are in the NFL for a reason not cause they suck.

    • Thomas87

Tourek showed some fire in preseason.. Who said he will be super good? ……

  • jamfed

It’ll be a four month injury. He’s done for the year…

    Bring back Frank Beltre

  • Kaipo

Give Merriman a call, we could get him cheap!

    • arnie

Lol as long as he could still play…..I won’t knock it

  • arnie

That will hurt. With Freeney down, it will be interesting on who steps up, and if the Chargers make some moves to bring in some help.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Man that sucks, I know Freeney’s not racking up the stats but he his the king of pressures.
I’d have to think Beltre or Kiesler would be brought back, Tourek the QB hunter needs to step up big time.

Also why can’t any of our Crappy guys get hurt? lol it’s all stars with us and a ton of them now, They out played the Cowboys the entire 2nd half without Freeney so maybe we will be just fine.

    • Peter Thompson

“They out played the Cowboys the entire 2nd half without Freeney so maybe we will be just fine”.

My thoughts exactly… but, we still need someone to step up. When you think about it… how many depth players did we have out there, and still hold the Cowboy’s offense to 14 total points? Perhaps our depth is improving? That would be nice

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

        Crezdon Butler FF
        Richard Marshall FR

If you would have told me those 2 would save the day and the play prior would get a pass deflection by Gilchrist I would say you are nuts….lol These guys at least for that drive stepped it up.

  • Sergio Quintero

Probably have to hurry back Ingram, and bring Beltre from the practice squad.

Pagano is going to have to do something he clearly doesn’t like to do, create pressure from scheme & line confusion.

    • Ernie Padaon

sigh… you mean he has to do work? this could be bad

      • Sergio Quintero

The chargers defense is always so static and standard, very little creativity & and even less effort in creating blocking assignment confusion. So yes, those under used neurons for Pagano have to work a lot harder.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

This is kinda lame but on Madden I had a good pass rush with the bolts but couldn’t get to many sacks or pressures and then randomly switched to Lovie Smith’s D playbook now I’m causing serious havoc. I know this team isn’t full of pash rushers that is evident but a change of our “Vanilla” scheme would be sick. We changed everything else might as well. Oh and Lovie’s out there waiting for a phone call lol

  • RussinSactown

Well it’s next man up time. If English is going to be the man or Tourek Williams is going to make a move and be a starter it’s now or never. As much as I liked Freeney pressuring the QBs, he’s out and we won’t get a month to train someone up. It’s time for these guys to step in and make an impact.

  • thanos

    thomas keiser???

    • Ernie Padaon

      was thinking the same
