Chargers Defense Is Ridiculously Bad

The Chargers defense is bad in all kinds of ways. Sure we were missing starters all over the field, but I used to think we had some sort of talent on this side of the football. Why does it seem like every team in the league can put up 300 yards passing on us and can drive for a score at will? Where is the toughness on this side of the ball? John Pagano, you are in the hot seat!!!!

Not all the blame can go on the defense for this week, but I am already tired of teams picking up big chunks of yards on the ground on us.

We just made Jake Locker look like a track star on the field. We also made him look like a decent NFL quarterback. HE IS NOT!

Corey Liuget.. Where the heck have you been?! Liuget was regarded as one of the best players on the defense and has not shown up so far this season. Dwight Freeney is close to a sack on every play, but since there is no pressure from anywhere else, quarterbacks can just side step Freeney and get away.

The secondary is laughable. 15 yards. 20 yards. Touchdown. We can’t stop anything.

We’ll get Manti Te’o and Donald Butler back for Sunday, but how are they going to stop Tony Romo and Dez Bryant?

Our defense has been ridiculous bad.

you know it, the rest of the fans know it, and so does the press….When will the GM and Head Coach acknowledge it?
Also, you may have been busy or whatever Ernie, but please don’t pull any more cute crap like that Queef Thread…
You don’t invite knuckleheads to your home to talk crap in front of your baby and your baby’s momma do you?

If it’s for ratings or you just got bored, I hope you got your kicks. But seriously, you are WAY better than that.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Ha… I wasn’t trying to invite them on here.. My bad, but I do it from time to time

  • Stan Zab

Two guys in the secondary were on the couch 2 weeks ago. A guy who is playing his first year at safety and 2 backup MLB’s (you know, Mike LB’s, the guys who are supposed to make adjustments on the fly). I’ve been saying it since before preseason but ya’ll got on me for it. Absolutely no depth and many of the starters would be backups on other NFL rosters.

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

LMFAO, that is why Rivers can’t be getting flagged for un-sportsman like and frickin’ kickin’ the ball like he was a FIFA player….He needs to harness his energy to put up ridiculous points….
Can the team or the fans rely on this D? Do I really need to ask??

      • Stan Zab

There is no way the coaching staff should have enough faith in the defense to run on 3 consecutive plays and punt it with a lot of time left on the clock. And then play man coverage with CBs who have no business being on an NFL roster. That was just pathetic decision making. I put that game squarely on the coaching staff…could have easily won. Same with the Texans game. At least learn from your past mistakes. Can’t depend on this defense to win you the game, by no means.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Amen to that, maybe if you have Seattle’s D you can play like that, with ours that is one scary retarded thing to do.

        • joerockt

Complete truth right here. While the D did suck at the worst possible times, they held the Titans to 13 points for 99% of the game. The offense left at least 10 points on the field due to stupidity. This is all on McCoy and Wiz for deciding to chew up the clock with a 4 point lead and again snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

          • Nick in PB

Football 101. You run the ball to take time off the clock and make the other team use their timeouts. That is the way you win in football. It worked except for the fact that we didn’t get a first down. We can’t get the freaking first down! We didn’t against Houston and we didn’t against Tennessee. Hopefully, the coaches have figured that out and we’ll see a little more aggressive play calling if we find ourselves in that situation again.

          • joerockt

C’mon Nick, they started this grind the clock crap in the 4th with a 7 pt lead. It’s not like we were up by 14 with 3 mins on the clock. 4th qtr is no time to coast. How many times have you seen this with Marty and Norv? It’s the same crap all over again.

      • Trey P

who cars about him kicking the ball did you want him to pick it up and get hit chill out

        • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

he’s a team captain, he needs to act like one instead of that garbage….

          • philiprules

yeah, cause picking up the ball with the defense bearing down on your QB after about 10 backward passes to lose 30 yds is a good move.
the unsportsman like was pretty dumb tho.

          • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

I never said he should pick up that ball….that game was lost b4 that play…I’m saying kicking it was classless like Addae feeling he has to celebrate each time he makes a play…act like you’ve been paid to do…A PRO….

          • philiprules

so he shouldn’t have kicked it, he shouldn’t have picked it up. Just leave there for the Titan’s to pick up then?

          • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

u really gonna go there? how muchtime was left on the clock? ZERO, so it was game over….lay off the 420 man….

  • Scott Lee Miller

San Diego sports fan for life = SUFFERING!!!!! WTF? Will we ever get to experience a championship? All we can do is remain die hard cuz some of us have lightening coursing through our veins. That’s who we are!!!

    • Stan Zab

You were hoping for a championship this year? I think this team is heading in the right direction. Should be 3-0 with a roster like this. Pretty impressive.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Liuget & Reyes & Freeney were a big fat non factor, funny that English got a sack. This game put me in a somber mood for the rest of the day, I really think something drastic has to happen on the secondary or this crap is going to keep happening over and over and Weddle is going to be playing out of position all season taking away what he does best. Gilchrist needs to be benched or if he is better then our Nickle or 4th CB then he can take their place. Lets call it a failed experiment and never look at it again.

Just so we don’t beat any all time records with giving up passing yards like the Saints did last year I’d try to swing a trade with a team that has a decent backup SS or CB, possibly sign Rhodes and even get Keisler & Beltre back and see if he can create a pass rush of some sort, I’d even see if Richard Seymor would sign for a basement deal just to backup our ends.

    • Stan Zab

Seymor? You’re reaching on that. This team isn’t ready for any kind of a championship run to make pickups like that. Need to keep developing the youngins.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’m just saying depth brother, the thing we lack.

        • Trey P

we can pick up trufant..t.o.somebody they aint gone cost much lol..

  • 619chargers4life

I think Corey is still hurt but playing hurt , hence the reason why he is always on the injury report but there is no excuse , this shit is getting real and I don’t like it. Pags will be gone next season with them playing like this. No reason to rush Ingram back if this is what it is . Hopefully they can get there shit together.

    • tubbs45

his shoulder is still wrapped during games… definitely playing through the injury and you can tell he isnt able to get that same push on the linemen.

      • 619chargers4life

        Exactly!!

  • Trey P

I been saying this corey and reyes was only good in that Jets game now if we find new starters wed have great depth..but they cant get no pass rush.ang pags sucks.he scared thats what the owners get for only going afer good character guys..You need some crazy hardnose people on your team!!I see the giants and steelers and packers players complaining about a loss..What are players do o oh well get better next game we just didnt finish.Get that out of here GET ANGRY!!!Chargers Are SOFT!!!

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

      now you’re talkin’…

    • shayaaa

Way to discredit your entire comment by saying that Liuget’s only good game was against the Jets last year. Then match it up with suggesting the team goes out and gets players with character concerns. Future Superbowl GM right here.

      • Trey P

I was and look a all the teams who won super bowls they take chances on player wih great talent but has character concerns..They fix them and it pays off lol…

      • Trey P

And i may be wrong on corey bu no reyes he ha 4 sacks against the jets and 2 against the broncos..Just face it you act like we have 49ers defensive type lineman hat reck havoc every play lol

        • shayaaa

Where have I suggested we have a d-line like the 49ers? TIme to put the crack pipe down Trey.

  • Sergio Quintero

Mike McCoy its time to learn lessons from Sean Payton & Mike Martz on how to coach with a horrible defense, the most important rule: never ever put your defense in a position to win you the game, they will fail. 2nd rule if you have 4th & short inside the opponents 40, that means you should go for it, there is never enough points to cover for your defense. And because your defense is horrible, you don’t play field position.

I know Mike you want to coach like everybody else, but the defense is that bad, time to accept their limitations, expect the worst and maybe they’ll surprise you, not the other way around.

    • Trey P

We dont have a mike martz sean payton type offense tho

      • Sergio Quintero

True, but the precautions & attitude must exist to give you the best chance at winning.

    • joerockt

Taking calculated risks is what separates winners/champions from losers/footnotes. Parcells was another 4 and short go for it guy (who Belicheck learned from). He did alright for himself.

    • Nick in PB

You are correct Sergio. The only explanation is that it’s still early and like the fans, I think the staff keeps thinking we will bounce back and play good D. What I don’t understand is the play from our defensive front. Those 3 guys were suppose to be a strength but so far, they look really weak.

      • Sergio Quintero

Vanilla schemes & conservative off coverage is not going to get this done, time for true aggression through overload blitzes, and more press man coverage.

If the players aren’t making plays, you have to create difference making plays through scheme, be it through blocking confusion, or tight coverage at the start of the play forcing the QB to hold the ball.

  • Trey P

And one of sd local reporters needs to stir up something and ask mccoy about the d coordinator or something gosh!!!

  • tubbs45

3rd game of the season… Tough loss. poor decisions on the offensive side of the ball: run, run, holding, run 4 and 1, punt with 2 minutes left… Ummmm ok. but lets look at other missed opportunities: red zone penalties and offensive pass interference topped off with an unsportsman like conduct (still wondering what River could have said that was so offensive without cussing???) Our D was shredded by Locker, yes that hurts. Our lack of depth was on show case in the backfield… So bad. We need some speed for f’sake…

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801
  • Tazzster

4 things we learned from the season so far…
    1. The defense is bad. There is just not enough playmakers. The one thing they have done well is make other teams settle for field goals. Hopefully they will get better with Butler and Teo both on the field, but obviously there are still huge problems with pass coverage and pass rush.
    2. This team is not all that bad. Seriously, they are just a couple of plays away from being 3-0. In both the Houston game and the Titan game we really only needed one more play.
    3. Ryan Matthews is a bust. I have been a support of Matthews but I am officially done. When it is 3rd and 1, you better hit the hole hard. I don’t care if someone is there hit it hard and fast, push the pile. DO NOT be caught dancing behind the line. This was a huge momentum swing in the game. We needed that first down and Matthews laid down on the play. Also he still runs around with the ball away from his body trying to swim through holes. The dude needs to learn how to lower a shoulder and deliver a hit. Mabye he is protecting teh weak collarbones.
    4. The Coaching staff needs to learn how to finish games. When its 3 and 8, you need to put the ball in your playmaker’s hands – that is Phillip Rivers. Give him the ball to win the game. Put it on Phillip Rivers to convert that 1st down and keep the clock rolling. Instead we decided to put the ball in Jake Locker’s hands and dared him to beat us. Bad move. You always put the ball in your own hands. Stupid, stupid, stupid. We can not play conservative at the end of the game. It cost us in this one and in the Houston game.

    • Stan Zab

I agree with everything but number 2. I think the team is that bad. First, you are what your record says you are. Second, the Texans and the Titans aren’t exactly world beaters as we’ve witnessed in their other games. Third, there’s no way we can compete with KC and DEN with this roster.

      • Stefanie Smith

Are the 9ers and Packers what their record says they are? No. Too early to pack it in. However, on the other side…although we are a couple of plays away from winning, the Chargers are not consistent. You never know what you are going to get on any given day.

        • Stan Zab

I know what I can expect from this defense every week. They’ve been exposed and it will only get worse for this secondary. Get ready for teams to start throwing bombs on these corners and when they start sitting deep they’ll gash with the run. Take that to the bank.

        • Stan Zab

And yes the 9ers are this bad. Kap looks lost out there. Butt naked centerfold photoshoots and his shoe collection take precedence.

        • Brandon Rios

Lets not compare the chargers to the 9ers and packers…The chargers are not that good.

          • joerockt

I see what you did there.

        • Nick in PB

Good point Stefanie about the Niners and the Packers. But, we really don’t look very good right now. It’s going to take time and some more wins like we had in Philly to build the confidence this team sorely lacks. It takes time to build a winning attitude. I don’t think this team has had that type of mentality in a while and it shows.

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

I honestly thought are Defense would get better from last year.
Every year we seem to have a problem with something, and this season it’s the Defense.

    • Sergio Quintero

You are so right there always appears to be one thing every year that is repulsively bad that keeps the entire team down, from the O-line last year, to the special teams in 2010, running game in 2009.

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

We all need to apologize to Jammer and Cason.

        • Stefanie Smith

If I could I would give you 10 stars for that comment. You are so right. This was my concern. We released vets only to go backwards. I mean. What was the new management trying to prove by getting rid of say..Jammer? He was willing to stay for about NOTHING. He stated it and also said that Chargers never even made him an offer. That was so wrong.

Does Telesco think he has improved the defense when he got rid of Jammer and Cason? If yes, I wish someone would tell me how our defense improved by letting these guys go.

          • CALiFORNiAkiD

I agree we just let to many vets go on Defense.

          • Trey P

we shoulda kept barnes he was causing havoc for the jets and i do think is scheme more than the players thats why cromartie left he got tired of playing zone..Until we get rid of the Rivera hand me downs we wont be good on d..

          • boltingindiego

barnes did squat last year which is why their was no rush to keep him. Cromartie left because we traded him.

          • Trey P

cromartie had issues with them running zone all lthat year and again barnes did nothing cause of scheme..

          • boltingindiego

what scheme all barnes did was rush the passer. He did well as the 3rd down specialist in 2011 but not so much in 2012 same role. Cromartie was in his last year of the contract and majority if not all of the organization was pissed on the lack of effort in the Shonne Green td in the playoffs. Plus we got a 2nd or 3rd round pick in return.

          • Trey P

i wander whose those picks were lol i still rather have cromartie then any coner we have now

          • boltingindiego

me 2 but i doubt we could have afforded him which is another reason why i think we traded him.

          • Trey P

neither one of those player are playing now so no we dont lol

          • Stefanie Smith

Actually, I believe Denver ended up picking up Jammer. Not sure about Cason. Thought he went to the Jets.

          • Brandon Rios

            Cason went to the cardinals.

          • Guest

            Cards.

          • Trey P

denver has jammer…and arizona has cason but neither gets playing time

          • Nick in PB

Jammer did go to the Broncs but failed as a safety so he’s riding the pine as a backup CB. Cason went to the Cardinals and isn’t starting there either. No doubt they would provide depth but Wright and Cox are younger and can get better. Especially Wright who is starting for the first time. He got burned a bunch of times in Philly but that happens to younger DB’s. Cason had a few years under his belt and was still getting beat. They were both in contract years. You have to make that change.

      • Nick in PB

And the tackling is horrid!!! Too many yards after the catch. Pagano had a solid D last year and this year, not even the best part of the D is playing up to par. I don’t get it.

  • Sergio Quintero

The entire extension for Donald Butler is going to be a complicated thing, the guy can really play but his availability is below average. I believe they will extend him, but it might blow up in their face.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

I believe he was ready to go. I blame McCoy on that one.
      Rookie mistake.

      • boltingindiego

its the gm job not the coach to get the extension.

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

The fact that Pagano had no safety help on that TD by Locker is unacceptable.
Why is Pagano using Weddle to stop the run instead of stopping the pass?

  • Ioane

I’m just baffled and frustrated with this team. We can never seem to get it together. One year we have a great offense and our defense sucks. The next year we have a great defense and our offense tanks. Than we have a good O and D and our special teams suck or the kicker can’t make the chip shots to win a game. WHY ARE WE SO CURSED?

I guess the bright side is, it’s still early and we should start seeing starters return on D. We also have the same record as some of the top teams. As of right now, we still have a chance.

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

On the bright side. The Offense and Rivers continue to looked good.
Novak’s blocked FG was a huge play in that game.

Ladarius Green looked great, he made some really tough catches. So did Gates!!
And so far Rivers is completing 70% of his passes…Just like Whisenhunt predicted. 8 TD’s 1 INT

  • Rob Base

The CB’s suck ass! The depth on D is a major concern also. Why is it every year either ST, the O line or the D has issues! Shit makes me angry! Oh well guess we’re all used to it.

  • Sergio Quintero

A question, why do the steelers always have these really exotic & creative 3rd down defensive plays, and why do the chargers always have these vanilla schemes.

Pagano there is no law in blatantly ripping off other teams plays, who knows maybe 3-4 plays from sunday game, like the ones where everyone is standing and right on the line creating blocking assignment mess might be a place to start.

  • Sergio Quintero

Another question why play prevent defense, play your normal defense, are you afraid they’re going to hit you with a big play, that is not the worse option, you either get a stop and win the game or you give up a big play TD, and leave time for your own offense with 2 timeouts, prevent just assures that your offense wont see the field anyway.

  • Trey P

All im saying is i know the coaches see film and the way he plays defense in all these comback losses and they still let it happen if any of you guys go to the game sun please have a fire pagano sighn somewhere hanging up please lol..

  • joerockt

In the 4th qtr, the SD offense prior to the last possession ran the ball 8 times, and passed 1 time for an incomplete. The first 2 possessions resulted in punts. The same garbage happened in the 4th qtr against the Texans with 3 punts and an interception.

Bottom line is while the D sucked at the worst times, they still held the Titans to 13 points for most of the game. So regardless of how much field position they gave up, they didn’t give up points or at least as much as they could have.

In contrast, the D was really horrific against the Eagles, giving up 30 points. Funny how when you win these things are overlooked. Difference in that game is that we scored consistently with sustained drives and a fairly good mix of throwing and passing.

The play calling for the offense obviously changed in the 4th qtr. That shit has to stop. Only so much a defense can do if you can’t score in the 4th quarter. There’s just no excuse to hand the ball off 7 times in a row. I don’t care if Dunlop went out, after a few runs, a quick play action pass would have stoned the def enough for someone to get open. In fact I barely saw PA utilized. Rivers stopped calling audibles and that’s when shit fell apart. I put more of the blame on the O than the D.

  • Gunnar Martin

Don’t forget Shareece Wright. We’ll have him back next game too. Surprised he and Butler didn’t play yesterday in the first place, considering they both practiced during the week.

    • Trey P

I like shareece wright you pu him in man coverage wih safety help hes good he likes to get physical

  • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

Is anybody counting the missed arm tackles. They must be leading the league. Time to take a good hard look at Pagano. He’s not getting it done. I was not impressed with him last year either.
