Chargers 2014 Starting Quarterback

First and foremost, the majority of Chargers fans like and prefer Philip Rivers. He’s a spiritual, passionate guy, great leader and current Mr. San Diego icon, but if he continues to struggle to win games, his days in San Diego will be limited.

It has been said that GM Tom Telesco and Head Coach Mike McCoy came to San Diego partially because of the presence of Philip Rivers as the starting quarterback. Rivers is should be a quality player and could be behind the proper offensive line, but after last weeks up & down performance against Houston, questions are swirling. 4 Touchdowns is amazing, followed by an interception TD and loss nullifies stats.

Telesco and McCoy probably already have several QB scenarios prepared for 2014, as good management has an option for every situation.  If Rivers is no longer the Chargers quarterback in 2014 (via trade, never release), who would Chargers fans expect to take his starting quarterback role in San Diego?

Mobile rookie quarterbacks are also options, and can guarantee and extended stay for a head coach. Mobile, pistol, read-option, dual-threat quarterbacks are very popular at the moment since Robert Griffin III, Kaepernick and Russell Wilson entered the NFL, following the footsteps of Michael Vick. Several options can be made, but would they still be an upgrade over Philip Rivers?

If Philip Rivers is not in San Diego next season, who will be the Chargers starting quarterback in 2014 (rookie vs. veteran)?

How is Rivers himself not even listed in the poll? He is our starting quarterback now, and McCoy and TT obviously have faith and confidence in him. I agree that he has a tendency to throw games away for us, and he needs to get back to his original-self. But at least give the guy his respect. We can’t even afford to spend a first rounder for any position besides the O-line anyways. I would be pretty shocked if Phil wasn’t starting for us next year.

      Perfect!

    • jamfed

I did note “First and foremost, the majority of Chargers fans like and prefer Philip Rivers” … So I’m only assuming that Rivers will keep his job in 2014..

  • Real Chargers Fan

I will be very dissapointed if Rivers is not the Charger’s starting quarterback in 2014. you said ”but if he continues to struggle to win games, his days in San Diego will be limited.” He has had one loss since we got rid of Norv, and it was NOT entirely on him. He had one sloppy throw that an amazing player Brian Cushing jumped a route on. The Texans are a very strong football team. We lost that game because at the last 5 drives the offense had 4 3 and outs and the pick. Also the garbage roughing the center call. Rivers has the one pass at the end to an open man and JJ Watt bats it down at the line. Wouldve been a first down. Also hits royal in the hands on a long 3rd and long. Back when we had VJax and a good oline, Rivers helped win the Division like 3 or 4 time in a row and led the league in passing. Who has been our best WR the past 2 years? Malcolm Floyd? And we all know about last year’s oline……I agree Rivers has hit tough times these past couple years but its not all on him its the whole team in general. He deserves at least 3 or 4 more years to see what we can do with the new system. After that if we’re still finishing 7-9 then we’ll talk about a qb change. The Chargers fans who are saying we need to get rid of Rivers are ignorant and need to go be Chiefs fans. They’re the kind of losers who cheer against their own quarterback they do that stuff not us

    Charger’s fans.

    • arnie

At least somebody was “actually watching” the game.

    • 1961 Fan

Rivers is depressed that he is playing on a week team. He still has flaws that other teams are improving on. No longer can an immobile pocket passer do well if he has far too much pressure from a weak O Line. When Marty was coach the Chargers excelled because of the strength of the team around the QB. With the problem on the defensive side of the ball you may throw 4 TD’s but your defense allows the other team back in the game – not winning football! You say 3-4 more years; this new regime will act by next year – perhaps to pin the lack of success on someone.

  • Rob Base

Bridgewater 2014 Bolts QB. Lets see how many people I piss off on this comment.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

You won’t piss me off with that comment.

Teddy Bridgewater is the real deal.

    • Gunnar Martin

You tick me off if you’re serious and think that we will actually be in his range…

      • Rob Base

Haha clam down killer. We will see what Rivers can do as the season unfolds.

        • Gunnar Martin

Haha I was just kidding ;)

  • Stan Zab

Rivers will be starting next year. Need to keep building the O-line and give him more weapons. A rookie QB would be a considerable downgrade, get everything right around Rivers first. If he still struggles, we can talk about a new QB.

    • Boltfan4life

C’mon guys we can’t be that blind to see that rivers hasn’t been able to make a play to win a game in a loooonng time you can blame Norv the o line no receivers no run game or whatever the QBs that win playoff games and championships fight their way thru adversity Rivers has shown for many years now that he can’t perform when we need him the most!!!

      • Nick in PB

Yet, I remember a time when he did! Yes, it has been a loooong time but we had Norv for a long time too. That was the common denominator. Philip will bounce back.

      • RussinSactown

Which QB would have thrived behind the 2012 O-line? You think Rogers, Manning or Brady would have thrown for 5000 with Harris and Clary on the tackles?

      • Stan Zab

Rivers is top 15 QB in the world. You say that like great QBs grow on trees and are easy to come by. Rivers has shown in the past that if he has a good Oline he can dominate. Pretty sure he led the league in passing in 2010 with Nanee, Ajiratutu and Crayton as his primary receivers. Like I said, give him a good line and a decent running game and see what he can do. Rookie QBs won handle pressure any better than Rivers, prolly worse.

      • Will

Ya do us all a favor and take ur dumb ass to another bandwagon.

    • Nick in PB

Perfect analogy Stan. Right there folks, that’s the answer!

  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

Funny that this a topic. Philip Rivers is a awesome quarterback. Love this guys football knowledge and intensity. He will win a Superbowl in his career. I also think he would be a great coach. Still worthy of leading this team now and in the near future.

    • Gunnar Martin

It would be awesome to play under him as a coach

  • Tyler Shain

This guy needs to take journalism 101 or something. Plenty of mistakes from a journalistic stand point. Anyways.. Rivers has proved time and time again that he can lead this team without allstars on the offense.. does anybody remember 2010? The offensive is still not what it was two years ago but looked good last week. If they can keep up the pace, the offense Will be in good condition. Last week just showed that they need to stay in the game for four quarters and keep the momentum. The chargers should be looking at the tape from last week and fix the issues this week. It will be a competitive game with a lot of points. Chargers I think will start to shine

    • joerockt

Yes, I remember a 9-7 season in a weak division, and a one and done playoffs.

Rivers is still a question mark for me in leading the team to get it done.

      • 1961 Fan

He is a big question mark; one year we won the division at 8-8, only because the Broncos imploded in the last six games of the season. The Bolts have many holes to fill and the QB position is one of them. The parity in football is set that most teams have up and down cycles. Some teams stay down from bad management and coaching (Raiders/Jaguars) some teams snap back because they have a tradition of winning. Hopefully the Bolts will have success after these rebuilding years – if Spanos does not screw it up.

      • Daryl Peek

        Truth

      • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

He’s only a question mark because you haven’t read the stats of the others. He may not be the best in the league but he’s close. You must be one of those people that blames everything on the QB.

        • joerockt

I don’t blame everything on Rivers, but he was sure part of the problem. Lets see how he bounces back tomorrow.

          • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

Rivers: What do you think of me now?

          • joerockt

Great. Lets hope he completes a season doing the same thing every game.

          • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

Now you know that’s not possible but he’ll be great anyway in this offense if he gets O line protection. We should have had two more touchdowns if it were not for those fumbles.

      • Will

If you think rivers is the problem then u don’t know this team…

        • joerockt

If you think Rivers isn’t part of the problem, you’re a blind homer.

  • Carlos

Marcus Marriota PLEASEEEEEEE. That guy is Colin Kaepernick 2.0

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

Love watching Marcus Marriota he can do it all.

  • arnie

It’ll be Phillip Rivers. If last weeks game is any indication of what we can expect from him, it’s the rest of the team that needs to step up. Been sayin’ that all off season.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

If last weeks game is any indication this might be Rivers last season in San Diego.
I just can’t believe how different he looks during the 1st and 2nd half of games.

      • arnie

don’t know what game you were watchin’. I watched the game with there QB throwing for 4 TD and no help in the second half. Schaubs Defense got him the ball back. What happened to Rivers Defense?

      • jamfed

Not every pass needs to be a completion, however, interceptios to TD’s (pick-6), that happened lose the lead can get you fired.

    • Nick in PB

Correct! I know that a lot of people are blaming everything on Rivers once again. He, no doubt created some bad habits under the no accountability law of Norv and those habits are going to need to be corrected. When things got tough, he tried to do too much. Not to mention that either of those dropped passes would likely have created a first down that would have sealed the game for us. If that had happened, nobody would be talking about Philip this week. When Philip is comfortable, he will shine. We just need to get him comfortable again. Like you were saying Arnie, the rest need to step their asses up!

    • ioane

      agreed.

  • RussinSactown

How is it Rivers throws 4 TDs and we’re declaring him DOA? This isn’t Mark Sanchez. He has had no real line for two years. Aaron Rogers would have sucked trying to play behind Clary and Harris last year. While I know you need to try and get the reader’s attention, let’s wait a few more weeks before we trade Rivers to Tennessee.

    • Nick in PB

Russ… you said it buddy! Philip is NOT anywhere near as bad as most of the QB’s in this league and let’s not forget what he did when he had the right tools around him. I was disappointed that is second half went so poorly but some credit has to go to one of the best defenses in football. They made some adjustments at the half and it paid off for them. Philip found himself in the same situation that created so much of his bad play last season. He has to overcome that but I think he will. First game, new coaching staff, new system. He will improve!

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

I get the “None of the Above” because a lot of us fanatics still believe in Rivers.

But Sorenson over Bridgewater, Mariota, Hundley and Tahj Boyd?

    • Rob Base

      Bridgewater all day!

    • Will

Sorenson??? That’s a joke. These preseason chargers qbs mean nothing. Remember Scott Tolzien? He was good too. What does that mean? Nothing. Sorenson will never be a starting qb for any team ever.

  • Tom Spalsbury

I’ll stick with Rivers as well. But Brad Sorenson looks very good so far.

  • Loyalist

Stupid article, oh ya by the way the sky isnt falling.

  • Will

What a waste of time making this article. The majority of chargers fans prefer Philip rivers?? No, 100% of chargers fans are behind Philip rivers. Anyone who says anything bad about rivers isn’t a chargers fan. Plain and simple. All this talk about rivers not being what he was is just ridiculous and all the people trying to say he isn’t doesn’t know anything about football. It’s not his fault he has no offensive line and nobody to throw to. It’s not his fault he has no running game and a defense that struggles to get off the field.

    • Will

The last time he had a line, receivers, defense and running game he led the league in passing Yards. You guys need to stop being delusional and pretending the chargers are as good as they were then, because if you actually do think this is close to that same team then I don’t know what to tell you…

    • ioane

No, 100% of the “REAL” Chargers fan stand behind Rivers.

      • Will

That’s my point. There’s no such thing as a real chargers fan who can say anything bad about Philip.

        • joerockt

Quit being a douchebag homer. Rivers deserves the criticism. Guy went 1 for 9 with an int in the second half. He contributed to the implosion, so he deserves part of the blame.

    • jamfed

      majority < 100%
      (in reality, majority is 51%)

  • Daryl Peek

    NO EXCUSES!

The Eagles were a much worse team than our Chargers last season, at 4-12. Vick was not even sure to be the starter this year. This summer it was all about the poor WR depth Philly has. Their defense was horrible in 2012! They now have a new HC with a new system also. Philly’s pass D is very suspect. NO EXCUSES, PR and the entire offense must prove they can do it. Our starting front seven was supposed to be our strength. NO EXCUSES, they need to keep Shady Mccoy in check! Desean Jackson is the only true WR threat they have. Vick will throw picks when rattled like most QB’s.

The power ranking narrative between them and us is polar opposite. Philly is the talk of the NFL while we are the forgotten. Sunday will be a chance to shut the pundits up for a day!

NO EXCUSES!! PR and crew must BOLT UP for 60 minutes!

  • ioane

it’s going to be Phillip Rivers. I would like to grab either Freeman as a back up tho. Or even draft Boyd as a future starter. unless we really suck this year and end up with a top 5 pick in which I Say we take Bridgewater and have him sit behind Rivers for a year, than trade Rivers after and start Teddy.

  • Daryl Peek

Marcus Mariota. I don’t know much about this kid but I recently looked up his 2012 stats, BEASTLY, and he’s absolutely killing it this season!

  • Nick Mansoor

If for some reason Rivers takes a major dive n his gameplay this season, TT will trade him away for draft picks and possibly an above average player, then they will draft a QB high in the first round by trading up and let the rookie QB fight against Sorenson. That is IF, Rivers continues to play like he did last season.

    • Will

      You’re an idiot

      • Nick Mansoor

I have faith in Rivers, but the key word in my statement was IF. That doesnt mean i am all for that plan. Rivers will stay in SD if he plays like he did today.

  • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

I hate to see these articles come out because Rivers is doing better than Tom Brady, Big Ben and most others. Rivers is a great QB and he’ll be our QB for some time. Below you can compare for yourself.

    http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=PASSING&conference=null&season=2013&seasonType=REG&d-447263-s=PASSING_YARDS&d-447263-o=2&d-447263-n=1

  • Will

Anyone saying anything about Sorenson is an idiot. These preseason chargers qbs mean nothing. Remember Scott Tolzien? He was good too. What does that mean? Nothing. Sorenson will never be a starting qb for any team ever. He was a 7th round pick for god sake (and don’t give me that Tom Brady crap either). He barely made the team.
