Manti Te’o is still not on the practice field for the San Diego Chargers

Aug 8, 2013; San Diego, CA, USA; San Diego Chargers linebacker Manti Te

Manti Te’o is still not on the practice field for the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers need to get him back on the field as soon as possible, but that sprained foot still is not cooperating. It has been more than a month since he has been on the football field.

There are big expectations of him. Bront Bird filled in for Te’o against the Houston Texans and led the team in tackles, but that doesn’t tell the story. A lot of those tackles were made down the field and he had a couple of touchdowns caught on him.

I am ready to see Manti on the field. Hopefully he can live up to some of those expectations. I don’t need him to be All Pro coming out of the gate. I expect him to make some rookie mistakes, but I also expect to see him to make some game changing plays.

We need him out on the field and we need him now.

Thanks for the update Ernie, I was really curious about this. I guess his foot is worse then we thought. We gotta have him out there vs. the Eagles and we need all the depth possible for that game. I’m surprised we haven’t worked out any MLB’s in his absence, almost every other team is bringing in guys to fill gaps right now…but maybe there isn’t much out there? Gotta think DJ Smith could play better then BB

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      agreed

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Do you think if Bird starts and he gets smoked again he will get the Axe? Weird having a guy starting that might be on the bubble.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

not sure… need some production out of that position. Takeo is available. Demorrio Williams might still be available even!

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I wonder what Bart Scott is up too, didn’t he say he planed on returning this year?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

just give me something… dying with Bird in the middle… now Gehlken says that Bird likely will start week 2… SIGH

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

God Help us, hey does BB lead the league in tackles? I tried looking it up but couldn’t find the leaders. I know he got all those tackles because of missed assignments and letting guys catch the ball in front of him then tackle them but if he does that pretty freakin funny and kinda cool.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahaha… i had to look it up after you said that… http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/stats

2nd in the league. now i want to post something about it. hahaha

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Nice dude, it was one of those things were it was so many tackles it’s almost tough to get anymore then that and it’s the first week so it had to be top 5. Good stuff

          • arnie

Gelkin tweeted, Any chance we see Te’o out there?
            McCoy; you’ll see tomorrow.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

            lol what a smart ass

          • arnie

Context. The coverage scheme sucked. Don’t throw the kid under the buss because he did what he was told. “Find a spot, sit in it, watch the receiver catch it, then tackle”. Te’o he is not, but at least he was out there.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

still… there were running plays that he made the tackle 5 to 7 yards down the field also… not where you want to make those tackles

          • arnie

Didn’t say he played great, or he was the best player. Were i’m coming from he got exposed based on the scheme. It just made things worse. Not gonna’ throw him under the bus for that.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Sorry Arnie… not with you here… that cost us the game. Wade found the wet spot, and went at it all day… at least Demario might have pulled off the random pick. We downgraded at that position. : /

          • arnie

Like i siad Te’o he is not. Kid did the best he could, whether you agree with me or not, he has to play within the scheme. Now if you can tell me that was “brilliant defensive scheme” Pagano put together, i’ll concede.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            Don’t bother… he sucked.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

people think he did so well… sigh

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            He SUCKED!!!!!!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

He pretty much commandeered the week 1 meltdown. Along with Marshall, and Pagano.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

and by agreed… i meant we should try to find someone else in the middle if he is not anywhere close. we need him out there… or need someone that can be a starter

  • philiprules

Sure hope Te’o gets better soon, ’cause Bird su-su-su-sucked big time. Almost as bad as #31 (Marshall?) in coverage.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

all i saw was hair with marshall… and that wasnt anthing good

    • Ignatius

How can the team expect for Bront to be a star linebacker when he wasn’t drafted nor picked by other teams when he was released last year. I like the kid, he plays hard but there’s a limit to what he can do and produce in the NFL and we are looking at it. This is what I was affraid it might happen to the team, injuries to key players and an extremely thin backups core.

  • Thomas87

Man… I’ve had sprained ankles and a sprained foot.. Doesn’t take this long to recover from that.. To me it sounds like McCoy and teo downplayed it to stay away from the media.. Sounds like he F’d it up pretty badly

  • Alex Pitrofsky

This really sucks. So much for him being out for a week! Get back out there

  • Heidijoy

Nice to see the support for Te’o!!!! He definitely would be out there if he could. Only game he ever missed since age 8 was a Pre Season game as a High School JR. He played with a broken nose in college. Played all 4 years of College-every game!! Has to be much more serious than initially thought. Fingers Crossed!!! Hope he travels with the team either way. He can learn a lot and be better prepared once he does get out there.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

He better be a baller… he wasn’t my first choice at MLB. In fact, we had better options already on the team.

      • boltingindiego

who would you have wanted as our 2nd ilb in the draft. I do wish we kept demarrio as atleast our 3rd ilb he was solid for us in coverage.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          Ogletree, and then Bostic.

      • John Alton

Better options already on the team? Who was that? Bront Bird? I don’t know why everybody expects super human performances from the rookies. They need a lot playing time in order to become the players we want them to be. One regular season game and pre season are not enough.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I liked Demario Williams. He made some really clutch plays last season. I know he’s getting up there in age, but letting him go and keeping Bront friggin’ Bird was stupid. Then hoping that Te’O (who came with concerns.. and I’m not talking about the catfish stuff.. the concerns about his play) to step right in & be a starting 3 down linebacker… when just about everyone out there is saying he probably can’t be one.. and then trading away an extra pick to get him, when the cupboard was bare… was irresponsible in my opinion. I also think we should have gone for Ogletree or Bostic instead.

But, like you already said… thank God I’m not the GM, right? I’m entitled to my own opinion about Te’O, and that’s it. I like the kid, and the catfish crap doesn’t bother me THAT much (but, it’s out there)…. this injury is just a typical set-back, and exacerbates my concerns that we still don’t have a capable MLB on the field. Having said that, I am behind him to live up to the hype, and be that leader.. even wrote an article about it. But, I would have chosen differently, that’s all. Is that not OK, or do I have to get on the Te’O hope bandwagon? If I’m wrong about it, I’ll be the first to post an article admitting it.. that’s just how I roll.

          • John Alton

I wish they would have kept Williams to. I agree Bird is not what you want at MLB. I am not going say anything either way about Te’O until he has some games under his belt. Drafting any player is a gamble. People bitch about 6th and seventh rounders not setting the world on fire starting on day one. Draft picks take time to develop and become the players we want them to be. We can’t expect them to be game changers from day one.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I know that it takes time, no worries John. I just didn’t expect them to use two picks on Te’O. If we would have known that was what was going to happen before the draft, I feel very few fans would have been in favor of doing it. People were talking about trading for EXTRA picks, not giving them away, when other good starting MLB’s were still on the board.
Stef said it best…. We were led to believe that we would try to draft 3 day one starters, not projects. Like Lotuleilei, or a cornerback, or a safety like Vaccaro. Fluker is the only one that has started, and I gotta be honest, I like him.. but he is a starter by default. Keenan didn’t start game one (despite there being a lack of receiving depth), and Te’O is sidelined. I know he will start eventually, but now he is going to have to play catch up, and Bront Bird is the back-up plan, and they haven’t signed another MLB. That’s poor handling of the situation in my eyes.. same thing at the strong safety position.. poor handling.

It’s more than a sprained foot. I thought the secrecy regime had left?

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Thank you.. everyone keeps trying to convince the masses that it isn’t serious… it’s serious.

    • boltingindiego

sprained foots on the serious sides can take more than a month to heal.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Is it me, or is this team just stubborn or stupid? .. new regime, or old regime. Bird over Williams? Seriously? everyone thought Alec Ogletree was “a reach”… he lit up the Broncos for a fumble pick six, and an INT. AJ picked Ingram over Mercilus,.. anyone else sick of this yet? These players are lighting it up, and ours are struggling, or on the sideline. I just get tired of the “weird picks”. Everyone thinks they are so friggin’ clever. Why didn’t they sign Vaccaro? Stupid when our secondary, and MLB is injured, and the depth is getting blown up. It’s a broken foot, or a high ankle sprain.. if you haven’t figured it out by now… week 4.

    • Heidijoy

Ogletree was picked in First Round!!! Many thought he was a reach because of positive drug tests, suspensions and a DUI. NO one doubted his skills as a player. He was gone by the time San Diego picked. Too much risk for 11th pick, I surmise.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

That’s what I am saying… I would have picked Ogletree in the first round. Or, Bostic in the second if we needed a middle linebacker so badly that we were willing to give up extra picks for Te’O. Kenny Vaccaro & Ogletree were a toss up for me in the first, and they were both available when we picked at #11. I don’t NOT like Te’O & Fluker. They are going to be good players. However, those two seemed like a better choice to me at #11, than a RT. Especially since they could be plugged in immediately, just as Te’O could. And look… those two are playing very well already for their teams. We are starting Bront Bird.. who is gonna get burned repeatedly.

        • Heidijoy

You would have picked Olgletree @ #11 is what I’m hearing from you, then.
Don’t know Bostic or where he was picked. Hopefully Olgletree stays clean and sober. Not many would have picked him # 11.
I’m not very Objective, since I’ve been a Te’o fan for over 4 years!!! Thanks for the clarification.

    • Derek

I’m convinced mercilus is a sucess of the scheme wade Phillips runs. If u follow his history everywhere he goes the first thing they do is draft a pass rusher and he becomes the best pass rusher till he leaves or gets traded. Ingram was a beast last season. He was the pass rush. He flew around the field and beat lineman. His zone coverage needs work though. Mercilus has been average at best for a first rounder. That’s with the attention off him due to all the other defensive stars

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Don’t get me wrong, I really like Melvin. His sack totals fell short of what I was hoping for, that’s all. That’s what this team REALLY needed last year. I know sacks aren’t everything, and the scheme & teams are different, etc. But, Mercilus’ had six sacks last season. That was what we really wanted to see from Mel. I guess you could say that was because of Wade, and he has better rushers around him.. but he had two games where he registered two sacks. He had another one against us on Monday. I’m not buying that he is below average. In fact, he seems quite above average entering the 2013 season.
