Where Was That San Diego Chargers Running Game?

Where was that San Diego Chargers running game that I thought would spring up. It was needed in the clutch, but it was nowhere to be seen.

Ryan Mathews and Ronnie Brown were consistently stuffed at the line. With a big lead like that, we needed to be able to run some time off the clock, chew up yards and get first downs. We were 3 and out city!

The offensive line could not make holes and the run game looked stale. We could not get anything moving and in the end it bit us right in the butt.

The Houston Texans are a Super Bowl caliber team, but we had them dead and we couldn’t put that finishing blow on them. We couldn’t show anything with the run.

That is where the Chargers could have made their mark and showed the rest of the league that they are a team to look out for. Instead, we choked it away.

We need Ryan Mathews to be that back that can close the game out. We need those offensive linemen to create a hole for those backs. We need to run that football!

I am still so fuckin’ disturbed with that flag on the Texans FG turned TD. Bullshit call.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I am just as disturbed that we did it to ourselves, regardless… don’t forget about that fake punt we got bamboozled on. That was as big a setback as the BS call the officials made, and would have changed the outcome, as well. We did that to ourselves.

      • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Texans knew our special teams would whiff on that fake punt…..Young, inexperienced, what more would prevent them from not running that? They wanted to win…….
I’m hoping Coach rips his O, D, and Special Teams coaches a new one and they figure this thing out…..As for all the young/new players, let’s see if this coaching staff can coach them up…

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I hope so. I went onto Chargers.com this morning to see how McCoy reacted to the whole meltdown thing. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but THAT wasn’t it.

          • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

I wasn’t to thrilled about his Press Conference either…I wonder what TT thinks…maybe we ar so jacked up & they are not bc they have a plan….I know if they don’t, they may start handing us chill pills again…lol

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Keo is their secret weapon, a man without a position but good at everything.

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

We lost this game because our defense gave up 24 unanswered points. John Pagano needs to be accountable for that.

  • Cgoodness13

Ya the refs killed our momentum, and something needs to be fixed with our coverage

  • TuffJ

    Agree!!! CHAAAAAAAAAARGE!!!

  • Derek

Our problem was we did nothing in the 4th quarter. Defense Did they’re job but after so many 3n outs texans prevailed. Overall I was impressed by these chargers texans had to pull out some tricks to win. They won’t go for it on 4th n short again as trivial as that sounds

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

It’s Deja Vu all over again….they refuse to use Mathews in goal line situations and opt for the pass. Pete made a good point about why wasn’t coach gettin’ in the O and D coordinator’s ass as to WTF was happening….I bet he won’t make that same mistake twice b/c that’s frickin’ emabarrasing…
Let’s see if this team can bounce back and learn to go for the kill. They need to or it will be a long ass season…

    • Joel Ayala

maybe MM doesn’t trust RM in the red zone? He must not like what he’s been seeing. only they know.

      • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

SD’s predictability of play calling is ez when they don’t have their RB in there….if not Mathews, give the rock to Fozzy or Woodhead……they need the run to set up the pass and vice versa…

  • jamfed

Shotgun DRAWS are not a viable way to get rushing yards and wind down the close. POWER I formation, with two TE and a full back would open a hole.

  • Brandon Reisinger

Boltbeat is so quiet today! Don’t get down on our team people. There was a ton to hang our hat on last night! Yes, we blew a big lead but it was not a total team collapse like we’ve seen in the past. Houston got going and flat out out played us in the 2nd half. This is a new team and our staff is young and hungry, Last night was disappointing but we should be very optimistic about our future. I can’t wait to see how this team looks mid season once the system has had some time to develop.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I think everyone is in shock. It was just that it was eerily similar to what we thought walked out the door with Norv. Thanks for the uplifting words, Brandon.

      • Brandon Reisinger

I was in shock too for about a half hour after the game. But then I focused on the positives from the game and realized that the positives far outweighed the negatives. I’m not expecting a Super Bowl run out this team this year. But as long as we see consistent improvement I’ll be very happy. I would say a new coaching staff and offensive system coming out In their first game and and playing the way they did for the first 3 quarters was a vast improvement over what we saw last year. This team is going to contend! Its just going to take a little time for everything to come together.

        • arnie

Consistant improvement. Isn’t that what we wanted anyway? Most people didn’t have the Bolts winning this game, much less winning more than 6. So i don’t get all the fuss?

    • Joel Ayala

Agreed bro. only 1 game. 15 more to go. let’s wait and see how we adjust. only concern I have is PR. hope he shakes it off and we played vs a really top caliber O and D line. and lost by our hands and a bogus call.

  • 619chargers4life

Don’t be fooled chargers are here to contend

    • kris

contend for a high draft pick

      • 619chargers4life

        Don’t be a hater

        • kris

Im not a hater bro. Im a die hard Charger fan with bolts tattooed on my shoulders. Im just realistic.

  • kris

Man you guys are drunk on Charger koolaid. Rivers choked once pressure was on. Our secondary was horrible. Our running game was non existent. Our coaching didn’t look much improved. Rivers is our #1 problem though. I love the guy PR once was and the guy he is off the field. But, he’s done. Come back to this post at seasons end and all of you will agree. He is the most immobile qb in the league and freaks under pressure. His lone long pass last night was an acrobatic catch by Floyd who deserves all the credit. Same ol story as last year. Defense gives the team a chance to win, offense blows it. We need to either start grooming Sorensen now or figure out what we want to do in the draft. QB is our #1 concern right now.

    • Michael

Really?, I saw our quarter back throw 4 td’s in 3 quarters, I saw a very tired defence and struggling secondary, I also saw some dropped passes. No running game, and terrible second half play calling. You think that it’s all PR’s fault????

    • 1961 Fan

Kris you are telling it like it is. Kudos to you for not falling for that rah rah coming from the delusional troops.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

When your running shot gun all night then you go over center and Mathew’s is in the backfield, it’s so freakin obvious he is getting the ball. Cushing resets the D every time and then stuff it everytime. No play fakes, no screen passes just same O’l Norval style up the gut . That crap didn’t work at all, gotta mix it up at all times. My wife called 3 of the late running plays just looking at the formation and she doesn’t know football that well, think about how easy it is to actual coaches. Balls

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

SD sure was telegraphing all there moves based off of the player/personnel swaps on O…that irked me all night. When Ronnie Brown was in, Texans D knew what to key on…Especially when they put Woodhead in and Cushing picked off the pass….No running attack is gonna get them this every time…
It’s too one dimensional…Let’s see if they have it in them to fix it…

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

How bout 1 hand off to Mcclain just for kicks? What was that lol

        • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

yeah! I wonder what McClain was jaw jacking about…he was probably like r u fricking kidding me? I won’t get that illustrious hand job trophy that they keep talking about on BoltBeat with that play…thanks fo reminding me…it cheered me up

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

That’s a great idea for a weekly award lol

    • joerockt

Never enough play action and not enough hurry up. Frustrating to no end.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

We should of faked at least 3 injuries in the second half, let him know who’s the home team lol

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

What happened to “road grading” and Clary is gonna help our run game? Fluker is a rookie, and will learn. Clary… new guard as soon as possible please!!!! Oh, and he got called for a false start. What a surprise!

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Fluker was awesome, the guy to his left not so much. I’m ready for a replacement RG but the thing is we don’t have that guy. Troutman looked like crap in preseason and all the old vet’s already signed with teams before week 1 started.

      • Ioane

I saw Watt walk by Fluker several times. Fluker did ok and so did Clary. It was a tough defense.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Walk by for 3 tackles? He did a hell of a job on him, holding JJ to 0 sacks should be commended.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

JJ Watt must take some serious preworkout, I take Super Pump and it does hype you up but that dude looks like he takes a case of 1MR or something stronger that has that Meth like effect. He can not stand still for 1 second, pacing back and forth back and forth, constanting moving even on the sidelines. He takes some good stuff that for sure.

    • joerockt

      NO2 for sure.

  • Cgoodness13

Before everyone jumps on the “fire McCoy” wagon, I’d like to remind you all this is his 1st wad coaching job, he’s a rookie HC, he will improve. I was impressed with rivers, he had one of the best pass rushes in his face all night and still threw 3 TD’s, and if it wasnt for dropped passes by our Recievers he could have had big numbers and more opportunities to score, the INT was just a good play by the texans defense. The texans are a Super Bowl caliber team, and we should feel good that we had a close game with them. But our Defense needs to fix its coverage, we could have had way more sacks if it wasnt for the receivers getting open in less than 1 second.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

No one’s saying that at all, McCoy’s gotta figure out how to end games but it’s a learning curve for a first time head coach. No one wants him fired

  • Ioane

We also need the defense to get off the field on 3rd downs, that’s what killed us. We get them off the field and they don’t score those 2TD’s.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I think what makes me the most sick, is that Norv Turner was probably watching the game, and saying “See!!!!! I told you it wasn’t me”… when we clearly know it was Norv, and we went into the second half and did exactly what he would have done. It was amazing how much Whizenhunt’s play calling mirrored what Norv has done to this team so often. Is it just some old-school offensive coordinator joke, that jerkoffs like me don’t get? Because I’M NOT LAUGHING!
It’s ludicrous when I am sitting here (not a coach of any kind) predicting everything, and wincing as they call the play, because it isn’t going to work. Maybe they should give me a headset. I would have told them to call TO on that fake punt, at least! Not to mention, the fans loyaly came out to support their team, and you immediately punch them in the gut “Norv & AJ style”? I won’t be surprised when they can’t sell enough seats to avoid the blackout. Who would want to pay $100 a pop to be humiliated like that AGAIN, in front of another team’s fans? Having another Denver-esque meltdown in game one is almost worse than getting beat 49-6. I will still go to the games, but a lot of people are fed-up already, and it’s only week one.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I can even feel Acee giving it a little chuckle on the inside. I hate that guy. OH, and I wouldn’t expect any announcers to have any optimism for our team now.. especially after Dilfer got his ass handed to him for sticking up for the Chargers. So typical!

    • 1961 Fan

The only sure sell out for the season is the C’boys game; I am predicting 3 out of the remaining seven blacked out.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Wait.. didn’t you just say all seven (7) last weel? Maybe I am getting that wrong.. lol.

        • 1961 Fan

NO, I said there may be three blacked out games out of the remaining seven home games still to be played.

  • Ioane

We also need the defense to get off the field on 3rd downs, that’s what killed us. We get them off the field and they don’t score those 2TD’s.

But you know what, that game is already in the rear view mirror. Time to move on. We have the high powdered Eagles offense up next.

I will say this, I loved how Rivers was able scan the field and make plays. 4TDS VS 1 INT? I’ll take that from Rivers all day. The offensive line still needs work, but its a lot better than last years unit.

I was hoping to see Whiz break out the bunch formation. The Eagles D struggled with it when the Skinz started to use so I hope Whiz pays attention.

The Run looked below average. I was hoping for more power running and not so much shotgun draws. The draw sucks if the line doesn’t open up the lanes.

It really sucks that we gave up the W. but it’s week 1. Shit, the entire AFC North lost this weekend. Lets hope the guys learn from this and play angry against the Eagles.

Our offense showed us that they can score points. That BULL SHIT call on Thomas really swang the momentum.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise. I hope that TT & McCoy aren’t happy with looking the same as Norv & AJ out there. That has to bother them. It would bother me. Pags & Whiz would have been in my office at 7am this morning.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Gosh… here is another thing (so much).. what were all these reports about our team being totally healthy? Then we find out 5 minutes before the game that Taylor AND Tutu are out? Guess they forgot to mention that. Maybe they got hurt on the way to the stadium?

    • Gunnar Martin

Were they hurt or just inactive? I just think they didn’t have room for them on the active roster

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        they were just inactive

  • arnie

Can’t run up the middle? Bounce it outside and let RM24 outrun them. Use Ronnie up the middle, he was better. Use Woodhead and Ryan as change up guys and passing. Keep them guessing.

  • Phillip

Ryan Mathews needs to be in to be that back at the end during crucial times to help seal the game, dude was on the field less than washed up old Ronnie Brown who hasn’t been a threat to pick up more than 8 yards on 1 carry since he and Ricky were running the wild cat. For this team to be successful they’re going to have to put the ball in Mathews hands more and let him get something going, even if it mean 2 or 3 drives of getting stuffed they need to stick with him. Also need to have more plays under center other than the ones where Mathews is getting the handoff, am i the only 1 who noticed Chargers were in shotgun all night except when Mathews was handed the ball against an 8 or 9 box D?? For the Chargers to be successful Mathews needs to be in on passing down as well as running downs.
