Chargers Restructure Philip Rivers Contract

There is word that Philip Rivers has restructured his deal. It has not come from any of the major outlets yet, but it is coming from Brian McIntyre. I have been following McIntyre for a while and he seems pretty credible. I guess we will have to wait for confirmation from other sources around the league:

Philip opened up $6.7 million in the books for this season. Interesting timing for this restructure. We could have used that money when we were trying to bring in some free agents. Maybe we are making some room to trade for Jairus Byrd…. just dreaming a little bit.

This will give the team a little bit of wiggle room to bring in some free agents onto the roster during the season. There will be a lot of movement on the roster during the year.

This also could be a move to free up some space to sign Donald Butler to a deal.

UPDATE: Kevin Acee has confirmed the restructured deal.

He can only make a deal if they ask. Apparently, they are now asking. Also, this lends some thought that usually on these restructures, it is not just a one year deal—it usually comes with an extension. Maybe they aren’t going to get rid of him. More guaranteed money for Rivers and more cap room for the team. Win for all hopefully.

  • Stefanie Smith

They probably want to work a deal with Butler.

  • Brandon Reisinger

Maybe they where over the cap after cutting Meachem and needed to clear some space?

    • arnie

The Charger were defiantly over the cap for 2014. As for this year, this move helps them operate more effectively. You cannot run a franchise with less than $3 mil in cap room.

  • 619chargers4life

Nfl network just said we are now 13 mil under the cap. Good stuff

    • Stefanie Smith

It’s showing up on NFL.com. I am combating the morons on NFL.com saying he took a pay cut–”pay cut or get fired.” The article actually says he took no pay cut… but you can drag the fools to the fountain but cannot make them drink. They don’t like Rivers so they frame his restructuring as a negative.

      • RussinSactown

You can’t make them drink but you can stick their face in and turn on the water. That can be satisfying…

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Waterboarding… Nice idea! Let’s get these haters to the fountain stat!!! Hahahaha!

  • Gunnar Martin

How much ya wanna bet this is to make room for DB’s contract extension

  • Aaron Johnson

Im a huge fan of low base high incentive contracts. To me, this is a good thing.

    • Stefanie Smith

This is a signing bonus–guaranteed. He probably has the check in his hand right now. There is no cut or incentive pay involved in the restructuring. He took part of his base and reclassed it as a bonus – solely to allow the management to spread it out over the remaining years of his contract. It’s guaranteed.

      • Aaron Johnson

I wasnt questioning what was done just stating my opinion on contracts. This falls right in line with what I believe since the base went down.

        • Stefanie Smith

Yes, technically and repackaged as a guaranteed signing bonus paid up front.

          • Aaron Johnson

Its not incentive, i was just unclear on what I was commenting about. I prefer deals with low base high incentive payouts. This falls in line with that view because the base was lowered. I understand its still a bonus and the same amount total. I just like the fact the base is lower

  • Thomas87

I don’t care what anybody says rivers is the man on and off the feild. He’s not like most other QBs. Flacco and romo make how much??? And rivers is willing to take one for the team (literally) and take a pay cut. I hope one day we can put enough weapons around him to go all the way. He and San Diego both deserve it

    • Daryl Peek

He didn’t take a pay cut. He just agreed to have money moved from regular salary to singing bonus.

      • Stefanie Smith

Thank you , Daryl, for pointing this out.

        • Thomas87

Why are you so worried about everyone else? Lol chill the fuck out

          • Stefanie Smith

Don’t get so upset. I just commented and deleted what I had put there. I get criticized regularly and take it. I am chilling, It is quite apparent you are not. Sorry, I just got done with folks on NFL.com saying Rivers took a pay cut. I apologize. No need to swear. I apologize for anything I said that has offended you.

          • Thomas87

You sure do run your mouth alot haha I’m pretty sure I stated I was wrong and you still want to argue? Lol women….

          • Stefanie Smith

No one is arguing here. I apologized.

          • Thomas87

            It’s all good.

          • Gunnar Martin

I think somebody else needs to chill out…

      • Thomas87

Had to go back and read the article from
        Nfl.com. Your right

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    Works for me = )

  • Daryl Peek

Good move. Gotta give Butler his due.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Going after Byrd? That would be so sick

  • Joel Ayala

Way to go!! Sign Butler long term and maybe trade for a #1 WR ?? Or Byrd.. TBD. love the move tho.

  • Joel Ayala

Byrd And Weddle as Safeties with Taylor and Marshall As Back ups and Move Gilly back to Nickel CB. sounds like enough Depth to me in the secondary

Philip Rivers restructured his contract, converting $5 million of his base contract into a signing bonus, NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday. Bryan McIntyre first reported the restructure.

Rivers’ restructure frees up cap space for the San Diego Chargers, but doesn’t lower the $12 million the quarterback will earn this year. The Chargers now have $12.76 million in cap space, according to Rapoport.

Converting Rivers’ base salary to a signing bonus frees up cap space in 2013, but will bump up the hit to the Chargers’ cap over the remainder of the deal (through 2015).

The timing of the restructure is interesting, as freeing up money on the eve of the season would indicate a move that could require cap space.

Rivers dead money charge in 2014 now jumps from just $1.2 million to $4.534 million, which is still a reasonable number if they were to trade Rivers.

Assuming that the Chargers have determined that there is a high probability of moving on from Rivers next season you have one of two scenarios. The first is that you let him play out his contract. If he did that he would count for $17.11 million in cap charges in 2013 and $1.2 million in dead money in 2014. There would be no additional carryover. Scenario two is restructuring Rivers to have an emergency fund of cap dollars to use in 2013 in the event of injuries. His new cap saves the team $3.334 million in cap in 2013. If none of that is used it is simply carried over to 2014 as an offset to the $4.534 million dead charge, bringing the real effect right back to $1.2 million. The net effect is zero, its just deferring when the team accounts for the $3.334 million. The key is to earmark the 2013 savings only for emergency, rather than trades or un-needed extensions that do make the effects of the restructure hurt future cap years.

You know what i see? A freakin’ smart GM doing his job really, really, really well. TT does not have a crystal ball, and doesn’t know how well Rivers will respond. So he’s doing what’s best for the football team. He’s doing his job.
Thank for the truth speak Daryl

Not to change the subject–as I change the subject: Anyone have any news on T’eo and Royal? Barkevious Mingo, the rookie on the Browns, who had the bruised lung is out. Wonder how Royal is doing.

    • Daryl Peek

      Michael Gehlken ‏@UTgehlken21h
Manti Te’o (foot) only Charger who did not practice today. Everyone else a full participant.

Looks like Te’o is the only BOLT that will likely miss the opener.

      • Stefanie Smith

Sort of shocking. Royal’s injury was serious and he is attempting to get ready to play? Maybe they are hiding their cards when it comes to T’eo. He should be good to go almost, you would think. I read somewhere that they don’t expect him to be able to play until Game 3 because he now has to catch up on game stuff and game conditioning, etc. Strange.

        • Daryl Peek

McCoy is with that Belicheat, gamesmanship. He wont divulge the injury info til absolutely mandatory. Personnally I like it. Sucks from a fan perspective because pundit rumor mill speculation will run wild til the pregame injury report is disclosed.

          • arnie

Hoenstly Daryl we should give two rat butts about the “pundit” rumor mill. All that matters is what happens on game day. Hopefully it’s to make them all look stupid.

          • Daryl Peek

I don’t care about it Arnie. But as we all see the rumors are always talking point on blogs. It’s irritating as hell when you want to have a grown up, informative convo.

        • boltingindiego

royal injury was more health serious but recovering and playing serious teops was worse. he most likely had some tears in his foot which can take up to 6 weeks to heal. Plus since the game is on a monday and then they have 1 less day to recover normally plus fly to philly safest bet is to not play him.

          • Stefanie Smith

Good point, about having one less day.

    • Thomas87

I’m big on royal this year I think he will show his true colors this year just like he did his rookie season with mccoy

      • Stefanie Smith

Same here. I think Royal is giving it all he has. Just hope he is healing. He is a good player, for sure.

  • FitzWilly

Now that’s what Leaders do, take one for the team :)
    Well done PR

  • hashem

    Brandon Lloyd is still available

    • arnie

      LOLOLOLOLLLHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
your killing me with that garbage……LOLOLOHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • arnie

Hold on Ernie. Rivers was asked, and he agreed to do it, the team didn’t follow up on it.
