The Chargers Will Be In The Playoffs This Season

I don’t understand why there are so many people down on this team. People look at the preseason and see that we got worked. Did we really? Do you want to watch the 49ers game all over again? Who started that game for us? Were there any starters in the game for us? ANY?!

Remember how we drove down the field against the Seattle Seahawks in the first game of the preseason and locked down the Seahawks offense in their first 2 drives? The Chicago Bears did put a number on us and we found a few pieces on the roster that did not belong because of it. Against the Arizona Cardinals, we moved the ball well and put up points on the board. We looked good. Our starters can compete in this league.

Just look at the starters for the Chargers. We know the depth looked terrible, but look at the first team. On defense, we have Corey Liuget, Donald Butler, Dwight Freeney, Eric Weddle and some solid pieces around all of them. On offense we have Philip Rivers, a running back with something to prove in Ryan Mathews, Antonio Gates and a decent group of receivers.

The depth on this roster is a work in progress and will be worked on during the whole season. With some good health and better play at quarterback, we will be competing for a spot in the playoffs. We won’t have all those 2nd and 3rd team players on the field all at the same time like the preseason. We have playmakers on our roster that will make those other guys better.

Plus, the AFC is wide open this year. The top teams are not that strong and any team can work their way into the wildcard spot. We will be in this race. I won’t sit back and believe that this team is 7-9 at best. There is talent on this roster. There is a new atmosphere on this team. We can be back in that tournament. I won’t claim us to be a Super Bowl team, but our first team should be able to compete with everyone else.

Totally agree! If we can stay away from the injury bug this can be a 10-11 win team. The outcome of this season will largely revolve around how healthy we stay.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

agreed…. i would have had a little more confidence with Alexander on the roster, but we will have to move on from that

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

The emergence of Ladarius Green helped bring that confidence back for me.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          True

      • Brandon Reisinger

Meh, I always though it was a stretch to expect him to stay healthy. I think as long as the O-line holds up we’ll be okay. Once Rivers gets comfortable with the new offence and comfortable in the pocket we’ll see him spreading the ball around again like in 2010.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

True, but I was hoping to steal a few games from him while the other guys got more comfortable

          • Brandon Reisinger

We’ll have to rely on our coaching staff instead. I trust McCoy and Whisenhunt to find ways to win games early on till everything begins to gel.

          • Nick in PB

I love all this positivity! Truth is, outside perspective is pretty grim. Let them think that. Most of them still think Norv is an offensive genius! They have no clue how much the “Norv effect” brought this team down.

        • Stefanie Smith

You are so right, Brandon. O-line holds up and things will look pretty good.

  • Michael Popowich

Absolutely agree, the only team we still have probs with in the AFC are the Pats, we’ve beaten everyone else in the reg season. With Rivers still at the helm, more protection, and the defense getting even better, the only other issue is the depth, but as you say, that’s a work in progress. Go Chargers!

    • Stefanie Smith

Jamie Dukes on NFL Network thinks we can even beat the Pats. lol

  • PakMaN

HELL YES! Can’t wait to watch them kick Houstons ass this weekend!

BTW GUYS I PROPOSED and am officially engaged as of last Thursday!

    • PakMaN

Oh and like I said earlier this year before we even picked up freeney. This team’s worst case scenario is 10-6.

      • Craig Hasan

Gotta include Hardwick in there. And Dunlap has a chip on his shoulder, he was dismissed as garbage by Eagles fans and now he has a thing or two prove

      • csmaring

They better not wait to make a “push” at the end of the season. Starting out 1-3 or 0-4 will waste the year. They need to start winning at the beginning of the year and not let up. Manning is getting older but he has consistently won. Rivers has to forget the last two years and start winning again.

        • joerockt

          That was all Norv.

    • Brandon Reisinger

      Congradulations! Ture fan! ;)

    • Nick in PB

Hey, just getting in on this one… congratulations!!! She IS a Charger fan, right? Seriously, best of luck to you!

      • PakMaN

Shes actually a huge Niner fan, which is why I decided to do it during this game. Dont mind my retarded face, I wasn’t exactly sober lol

whats funny was once the proposal went down, I heard people yelling “She better be a Charger fan from now on!”

  • RussinSactown

I think if we keep Rivers from having to play chuck and duck and get into a play calling scheme that isn’t “Run-run-pass. That didn’t work. Oh well punt it deep” then we’ll be a tough team to beat.

  • tev

    Worst is 9-7

  • arnie

I agree Ernie. This team, despite all the inefficiencies still won 7 games last season. Now that they can run the ball, protect Phillip and added depth to the defense, most are saying the best they can do is win 6 games? Really? The last time I checked, when you improve in the areas a team sucked, they usually get “better”.
Look I know people read to much into the pre-season, like it’s a real game. So I understand how conclusions to this teams future can be drawn. The bottom line is this, the Chargers found out who was worth keeping and who was not. THAT is what the preseason is for. Evaluations. Now the real thing begins, and I wiling to bet, they’ve overlooked not just this team, but have also overlooked Mike McCoy and his abilities as a Head Coach.

    • Mark G

Good point. Can’t believe the talking heads could even think we will win only 6 games when we won 7 with a weaker team last year – and everyone knows we should have beat the Ravens but refs screwed us again. They will call us the Gomer Pyle team – SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE when we finish in first!! Okay, I am showing my age, but I got see to see Fouts play in person :-)

      • 1961 Fan

        Dear Mark:
Here is your Chargers history lesson.
        1999 – 8-8
        2000 – 1-15
        2001 – 5-11

        • Mark G

That ain’t Chargers history, that was just a few years ago. History is the picture on my wall of #19, the best receiver in the ’60s, Lance Alworth.

          • 1961 Fan

Not just the best receiver of the 60′s, the best Chargers player of all time, past, present or future.

  • Stefanie Smith

Jamie Dukes is saying the same thing, Ernie. He said that Rivers(and the Chargers) could compete with any of the AFC teams and be in the mix. Actually, he is big on Rivers. Says if you give Rivers the protection and the weapons, they are a good team.

He brought up the Chargers again yesterday, Ernie. So maybe.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I saw that…. I love me some Dukes!!! It was really weird how they had Kevin Acee on there talking about the Patriots. Not sure what that was about ???? The host never asked him one single question about the Bolts. It was funny to see LT & Merriman tell Willie McGinest how tasteless, and disrespectful the Pats were for doing Shawne’s “lights out” dance on our logo after they won the AFC Championship. McGinest’s excuse for why the team did it was SO friggin’ weak.

      • arnie

Agreed. a 12-4 team, with rings, felt disrespected? Yeah i smell homerism…

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

He wasn’t even playing.. lol. And LT & Merriman were.

  • Stefanie Smith

Rivers gave them a locker room talk saying that every thing they do matters. Do what you are supposed to do–be disciplined and obsessed with it and yeah, maybe.

  • Los Bolts

    Totally agree! Good article!!

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I really really want us to beat the Texans, hoping Manti can play and has a big game.

    • joerockt

If we beat the Texans solidly, we have the potential for a great season.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

YES ERNIE!!!! Thank you! This is your best article in weeks (not that your other ones aren’t good, because they are). Preseason wasn’t pretty, but I believe it was because we had so many players to look at. And, the newly signed players from this weekend were already tried out by other teams in the NFL. It cracks me up when people talk about how horrible depth is on the team. How many of those preseason players are on the squad now? We even cut players that seemed to be favorites to make the roster… Starks, Meachem, Goodman… The players I thought were questionable already got canned for other depth players. The two spots that make me a little nervous are strong safety, and ILB. The receivers look a little touch & go because of injuries, but they aren’t terrible. People need to stop complaining before we have even seen all the first teamers on the field at once, for an entire game. THEN you can get back to your Debbie Downer comments.

You are right… I think the only starter I saw in that entire 49ers game was Le’Ron McClain… who went to the locker room after the first series.

Who wants to put their money where their mouth is? I’m about to get rich over here with all this rah-rah nonsense. Who wants to put $25 on their 10 win minimum prediction?

I will pay you $25 to go away.

          • Stan Zab

Are you a keyboard warrior or an internet gangster? I’m leaning towards internet gangster but can’t quite figure it out…

P.S. Its “cause” not “cuz” Mr. Spelling Bee champion.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Lol… I was totally effing around with you Stan. But, you are being a total negative Nancy. I would be ecstatic if we made the playoffs, but I am realistic too. It would take a lot of hard work, some luck, and for the team to gel really fast. However, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
But, seriously.. what’s with all the Rah-Rah BS? It comes off totally smarmy. I get it if you don’t think the team is going to do well this year, but what’s with challenging people to bets, and knocking people who are excited for the team? Even if the team doesn’t do well, can’t they have a little bit of optimism before the season starts? I thought that was what being a Charger fan is all about. Just seems like you are out to rain on people’s parade. Even if you are right, it’s still kinda dooshy. Not a good look.

          • Stan Zab

Finally something that has some actual good points. I’m not tryin to rain on anyone’s parade, I’m only bringing realism into a land of fairy tales and rainbows. Why tell people “the Chargers will be in the playoffs” when its obvious this team isn’t ready for that?

Probably to get hits on the page? I really don’t know, but you’re setting people up to be highly disappointed and losing credibility in the eyes of people who actually know whats going on. I might seem like a douche about it, I agree.

I was listening to Hacksaw this morning and his guest (who does this for a living) said the Chargers will be picking in the first 5 picks of the draft next year. You got homers saying playoffs and sensible people saying 4-12 or 5-11. Makes no sense.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

so you think there is no chance at all for playoffs… NONE? Were those the same sensible people that selected the Chiefs for playoffs last year?

          • Stan Zab

Do I think there is a chance? Yes. Do I think it would be a miracle if we made the postseason? Yes. Why? Because it would take a flawless, injury free season for that to happen. Whats the likelihood of that? Chiefs have the talent to be in the playoffs, their coaching and their injuries failed em last season.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Anyone pick the Colts to pick the playoffs last year? Anyone!? of course we are not going to agree on this point, but I think that the Chargers are better than you think they are… that really is all it is. You can be the Debbie Downer about it all you want, but neither of us will change each other’s opinion. Let’s wait for the team to change one of our opinions.

          • Stan Zab

Yup, we will see. But right now, and this is a fact, a lot more people agree with me on a nationwide scale, than people who agree with you. Only people agreeing that the Chargers are going to the playoffs are Charger fans. Go look at some preseason AFC playoff predictions, this is the first time in a long time, not a single one has the Chargers in the post season.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I understand what you are saying.. but, I just don’t understand the negative approach you took. Nor do I think that a blog site needs to be held to such a high standard of credibility. Half the stuff I read on most blog sites is pretty opinionated to a fault. In fact, the majority of it falls squarely in the “editorial” category.

I read tons of articles on the Chargers around the web, with analysis that I can either give, or take. However, I have never felt the need to start leaving comments about what a “bunch of homers” everyone is.. like I am better than them… or tell them they are living in a dream world. I think a lot of people know deep down that this team might not be the team we want to see this year. Having said that, there is a lot of optimism. Norv & AJ are gone, and the moves the new management are making seem to be an immediate upgrade over what their predecessors were doing. It’s OK if they choose to be excited, rather than sit around poking holes in everything.

There is a fine line between debating a topic, or giving an opinion.. and just being negative for the sake of it. I think you have crossed that line here. Not to mention.. if this site lacks the credibility you are looking for, then why even come on here JUST to let people know it on a regular basis? It seems like an exercise in self-indulgence. There are other sites that share the pessimism you seem to be looking for. Why not go there, and discuss “credible” topics with like-minded people? I don’t get it ???

          • Stan Zab

All I’m doing is challenging people to a friendly debate. There’s no animosity on this end if thats what its coming across as. I disagree that the Chargers are going to be in the playoffs and I’ve listed plenty of reasons why I think that way. This wasn’t a personal attack on you or anyone else. Blog sites are for people to debate, not for everyone to agree with each other. Sorry I don’t share the same optimism you do, I’m a realist, you’re an optimist.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Nice try.. here are some snippets from your “friendly” debate:

            “I’m about
to get rich over here with all this rah-rah nonsense”.

            - Yeah..
that’s a good way to start a “friendly” debate. Insult people on the thread right
out of the gate for being optimistic. Naw…. That’s not antagonistic, or
            personal. No way.

            “You got
homers saying playoffs and sensible people saying 4-12 or 5-11”.

            - Another “non-personal”
statement, right? Name calling. Anyone who disagrees with you is a homer, and
has no clue. There hasn’t even been a regular season game played yet, but you’ve
got it all figured out. Got it.

            “A lot
more people agree with me on a nationwide scale, than people who agree with you”.

            - Wow..
you are matrixed into the ENTIRE nation?!!! Well, that solves that. Where did I
even say that the Chargers were definitely going to make the playoffs this
year? I only implied that it’s refreshing to read an article NOT saying that
they are going to be picking in the top 5, and that the depth might not be as
bad as some think. Oh, wait.. I DID say that the playoffs aren’t totally out of
the question. But, thanks for telling me what my viewpoint is.

            Also, are
you using information from the same “pundits & experts” who all picked
Philly’s dream team to go to the Superbowl… or the Chiefs to beat us up last
season… or said Indy would finish 4th in their division behind
            Tennessee & Jacksonville? Just curious.

            “but
you’re setting people up to be highly disappointed and losing credibility in
the eyes of people who actually know whats going on”.

            - Another
jab at the site, and the community. Besides, do you really care, Stan? Are you
championing the fragile psyches of Charger fans worldwide, who can’t handle it
if the season turns out to be a rough ride? Is this site setting up its dum-dum
readers, who can’t form their own opinions, and aren’t as blessed with your God
given “realistic” knowledge? Good grief.. that’s not elitist, whatsoever. Also,
I have seen you in here numerous times, with practically zero positive feedback
for the articles, the writers, the commenters, or the site itself. If it’s such
a horrible source of information, with such low credibility, why have you left
about 50 comments over numerous articles in the last 5 months? Either the
content is more compelling than you are admitting, or you are just in here to
stroke your own ego. I tend to believe the latter, personally.

            “I’m only
bringing realism into a land of fairy tales and rainbows”.

            - OH, Thank
you for blessing us with your eternal wisdom, and knowledge!!! What would us
poor souls do without your guidance? Somebody thinks pretty highly of themselves,
            apparently.

            Should I
go on, or are you getting the picture?

          • Stan Zab

Lol I dont have time to read all that bro. I’m sorry you’re butthurt but you take this way too seriously.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yep.. didn’t think you would cop to any of that, because it clearly shows what you were trying to do.. get a rise out of people on here for your own sick amusement (as usual). I’ll sum it up real quick for you. I’m not butthurt… I was just pointing out that your “friendly debate” comeback is garbage. There is nothing friendly about your debate tactics.. nor do you have any respect for anyone else’s opinion on here. You’re just popping in to cause trouble, and make yourself feel superior. Those are your statements that I pasted above. They speak for themselves… and speak quite loudly.

          • Stan Zab

You can’t take a knock though? Can’t take a little shit talking? My goodness. What is this freakin politically correct story time or is this a freaking football thread? Relax bro, no one is attacking you, you’re safe.

“As usual”? This is the first time in a few months I’ve commented on ya’lls blog. Because this one was just over the top ridiculous to ME. MY opinion. I don’t care if I hurt your feelings dude, I don’t know you…I’m just stating my opinion. No one is stopping you from doing the same.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Whatever you say Stan. Of course it is a free world, and you can post whatever. I can take a comment with a grain of salt all day. But, going back over your comments, it looks like you have used the exact line “There’s no animosity on this end” before, besides saying it to me above. Also, you have dropped the “this is the worst homerism I have seen in a while” line before. Those seem to be your catch phrases, and I think that says a lot. You may not be on here often… But, I notice when you are, it seems that you are deliberately trying to achieve negative reactions from people. All you have to do is look at the reactions you had on this thread to know that. I’m just letting you know that I see your pattern of coming on here to name call, tell everybody how delusional they are, and never say anything positive.. you just come here to taunt people. Being opinionated is one thing. Just being a dick is another. I just want to let you know that you aren’t fooling anyone, Stan.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

you can get me $25 when they have more than 6 wins… guessing that is your prediction

      • Stan Zab

My prediction is 7-9 best case scenario. Only because we have the #2 easiest schedule in the NFL. There is absolutely no reason for people to be this hyped up after what we’ve seen from Rivers in the PRESEASON. He is still dancing in the pocket and forcing throws.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          so… $50 for 8 wins?

          • Stan Zab

8 wins won’t put the Chargers in the playoffs…there’s people making predictions for 10 wins minimum. Easy money right there. 8 wins isn’t going to put the Chargers in the playoffs.

I got $50 on the Bolts missing the playoffs…I’ll take you up on that all day.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

that’s not the bet. you don’t trust your own prediction??

AT BEST you said they would get 7 wins… i will take the over….

my AT BEST has the Chargers making the playoffs… AT BEST.

          • Stan Zab

So all this rah-rah is about the Bolts being 8-8? The title of the article is “The Chargers will be in the playoffs this season”…thats the prediction my money is going against, not 8-8. If you were predicting 8-8, I wouldn’t have a problem with it. But predicting playoffs is a little much.

          • arnie

How is that Much? 8-8 can get teams in the playoffs. Even 9-7 can get you a chance. If i read the article correctly nowhere did Ernie bring up a number. he just stated playoffs. So how is that a little much?

          • Stan Zab

Lets bet then, I’ll send you $50 if the Bolts make the playoffs, you send me $50 if Bolts miss the playoffs. Easy solution….

          • arnie

Why? This is a tactic at avoiding the question at hand. Answer the question and stop patting yourself on the back at attempting to be clever. Can you back up you Opnion “with facts” or can’t you?

          • Stan Zab

Again, Vegas got the Chargers over/under at 7.5 wins…thats a playoff team’s odds? Word, lets put money on it.

            Thats straight facts brother.

          • arnie

These are not facts, is numbers meant a thing why play? a game.
Still avoiding giving an answer i see. That is a straight fact as well.

Lol whats the question? Why 8-8 isn’t good enough for the playoffs?

          • arnie

That is the problem, you said, “…predicting playoffs is a little much…” So buy your words, 8-8 won’t make the playoff.

you still haven’t put any facts on the table to support that won’t make the playoffs.

          • Stan Zab

Easy, how many teams have made the playoffs with an 8-8 record opposed to how many missed the playoffs. So common sense says 8-8 isn’t good enough by that logic. A much higher chance of missing them than making them. Seattle made the playoffs with a 7-9 record too. Is that what we’re predicting here? The Chargers make it with a 7-9 record? The predictions get bolder and bolder….

          • arnie

Ah i see. Your stead fast on what record they end up with, and have used that as the basis for you opinions. The problem is, that was last year and we know how they got that record over the last three years. Excuse me most of us know how, that knowledge seems to elude you. This is 2013.

The Chargers O-line sucked last year, they gave up up 49 sacks, and averaged 2.9 yards per run. Despite 15 INT, down from 2011, PR still threw for 3600 yards and 26 TD’s. The problem was dropped balls, they averaged 60% of passes caught, 15 ended up in defense hands. PR Attempted 527 passes an 338 were caught, where did the other 174 go? On the ground. The Charger receiving core were on the bottom ten. The chargers had 8th ranked Defense and one of the best Special teams. Yet as horrible an predictable as they were, the managed 7 wins.

            What changed?

The “STARTING” O-Line gave up a total of 2 sacks, in pre-season. let me be clear, Starters gave up 2 sacks, over three games. That is down from giving up 3 per game on average in 2012. Clock management, the Chargers ran the ball and controlled the clock with a rushing average that went UP to 5 yards per carry. The Chargers with an 8th ranked D added depth and increased the snaps of the young players that equaled the production of the vets, now released, with a 1/3 of the playing time. Of the 9 games lost, 5 were by a TD or less, what does that mean? Low third down conversions, lack of a rush, turnovers, and no adjustments on offense contributed to the low production. ALL of this was addressed and changed.

Now. McCoy turned Tebow into a playoff winner, at 8-8, and had Orton ranked as the 4th highest passer in the league. Manning was supposed to be washed up, McCoy “fixed” that as well. Neither of the former QB’s came close to Rivers production yet they thrived under McCoy’s system, the very same system Rivers is under right now.

The Un-reasonable part is, that McCoy can’t get three wins from this team, but get “worse”, is just being a hater.

These are facts. So please produce something other than Veags to support yous “opinions”.

          • Stan Zab

Geezus, there’s way too much here for me to pick apart so I’ll only touch on a couple.

“Attempted 527 passes an 338 were caught, where did the other 174 go? On the ground.”

So PR’s passes are 100% accurate and all the balls that were not caught should have been caught but were dropped by the receivers? WOW. Didn’t know he was that good. If you recall 2010 (PR’s most productive year) his primary targets were Ajiratutu, Crayton, Nanee, Floyd, Gates was out for a lot of the season with injury and VJ was holding out…remember that? Shit receivers, good O-line.

“The “STARTING” O-Line gave up a total of 2 sacks, in pre-season. let me be clear, Starters gave up 2 sacks, over three games. That is down from giving up 3 per game on average in 2012.”

Did the STARTING O-line play 4 quarters in those preseason games? How are you gonna compare full game totals to 1/4 game totals? Did the defenses we were facing use the same blitzing schemes they will be using during the regular season or were they sending basic 4 man rushes? Remember how amped up ya’ll were when we got Max Starks? Hows he doing?

I’ll stop there. What improved? DJ Fluker is a beast that can open up gaps in the running game.

What I’m not so sure improved…The LB corps. We have rookies and guys who have been cut playing the nickel CB position. We have an unproven CB playing a safety position. We have Cam Thomas with no depth playing NT. We have a rookie starting at the 2nd CB position. You see where I’m going with this? There are WAY too many question marks on this team to be predicting playoffs. All the rah-rah ya’ll got goin on over here will not convince a sensible person otherwise, I’ll have to see it to believe it.

          • Stan Zab

Please remind me, whats the Chargers records in the past 3 seasons and how many times did they make the playoffs in the last 3 years?

          • Stan Zab

Vegas got the Chargers over/under at 7.5 wins…thats a playoff team’s odds? Word, lets put money on it.

          • arnie

I’m unemployed…vegas plays the spread. and manipulates the system so no matter what you put down, they will come out on top. these are not facts.

          • Stan Zab

You know who else got 7.5 over/under? Eagles, Bucs, Rams, Vikings, Chiefs…

            They making the playoffs too?

          • arnie

Still avoiding? You got nothing, do you?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i never said 10 wins minimum and i never said Playoffs minimum…. your max is 7 wins… so why would you be scared to bet $50 on 8 wins?

          • Stan Zab

I never singled you out either did I? I said there are people on the thread predicting 10 wins. That is easy money that will get me a win on my bet with 100% probability. 8-8 is feasible, thats taking the over on Vegas’s 7.5 over/under. I’m taking the under, you’re taking the over. 50/50 chance to win the bet…get it now?

          • Stan Zab

Didn’t you write the article? Read your title again…that says to me “playoffs minimum”.

    • Brian Smith

Go find some real friends and bet them in person. Running your mouth about betting over the internet is rediculoious….Shut up

      • Stan Zab

:( ouch my feelings. My friends know better than to tell me the Chargers are going into the playoffs. This is like a pep rally for a high school team on the internet, its funny and sad all at the same time.

  • joerockt

You can have all the pro-bowlers you want, if they don’t grasp or buy into the new coaches system, you won’t win many games. On the other side of that coin, good, smart players + good coaching/playcalls = wins

To make a statement like “We’ll be in the playoffs” is just silly homer-ism. Your claims don’t back it up. Rivers is still a huge question mark. Mathews is still a huge question mark. Fluker, a rookie RT, will make mistakes.

While I’m as excited about the season as the next guy, its definitely tempered. My feeling is that this season has the potential to go either way. Triumph or disaster. Neither of which can be gleaned from any preseason games. Plenty of teams have lost all preseason games only to go on to the playoffs. Others have won them all only to have a losing season.

My stance is hope for the best, but expect the worst. I will not let expectations ruin my Sundays this year =]

    • Stan Zab

      Well put sir.

    • Nick in PB

Joe, you make some good points. It is going to be a hard season to predict. You can’t predict injuries and if we have too many of them, we will be in trouble. Just a couple and we just might be OK. We can’t afford to loose more than a single player at almost any position. If we stay healthy, I think we can play with anyone. I’m excited to see how this staff gameplans!

  • Bill Nichols

Thank you Ernie, for giving us a real look at what it is we are working with this year. And I totally agree, hell, we are 110% more stacked than during OTA’s, and the new regime is acting like they give a shit, making moves when needed, and the right damn moves at that. Love going into this season under the radar, hell we might be listed as finishing just a head of the Raiders, looking at the 2and or 3rd pick of next years draft, bully I say. We have some real talent on both sides of the ball, and they are only going to get better as this season plays out. So freaking hyped, Monday can’t get here fast enough. I just hope we get .huge rowdy ass fans at each and every home game, we need to get behind these guys and show some support, the crowd can and will help in close games. Bolt the “F” up baby!!!!

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Bleacher report writers all taking Texans in week 1…..bunch of buttholes

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1758517-nfl-picks-week-1-bleacher-reports-expert-consensus-predictions/page/17

    • arnie

It’s the safe bet. it’s what everyone does. If they are right they save face an credibility. If they’re wrong, then the excuse will be the Texans had an off game.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I think both teams are going to put Alot of pressure on both QB’s and were going to see a bunch of crazy sacks and turnovers in both directions. I hope it’s close and we beat them with some brutal like a pick 6 or fumble recovery for a FG.

        • arnie

Of this i have no doubt, it will be a good game. These guys were within a game of playing in the AFC championship. They’re not a horrible team. Two things get my goat. Underestimating the Chargers with no current information, on how the team looks now, except for Jamie Dukes who seems to have done his homework. The other, Texans are not bad as stated, but i don’t like everyone thinking this they have “arrived ” at being a competitor. Closer to truth is, Payton Manning left the division, and that is why they are top dogs.
He’s in our division now, and i still think we have a shot.

        • Stefanie Smith

Freeney will scare the crap out of Schaub–then he will be skittish for the rest of the game.

  • Sergio Quintero

Great article, I’m not the most optimistic blow smoke fan out there, but still I don’t understand all this negativity from the national talking heads. I keep hearing 5-6 wins, and even 30th on the power rankings, and it makes me feel like my eyes are failing me, because I consider myself objective, and this team was unlucky to win 7 games (they gave away the Ravens’ game), and they have improved:

    - The Oline while not elite should be middle of the pack to slightly below average, which is a whole lot better than the grease fire of last year.
    - Rivers should put up better numbers, through an emphasis on shorter passes and the improved OLine.
    - Mathews looks as good as he has ever looked, and the OLine is better.
    - WR are better by the simple fact Meachem wont be playing, and Vincent Brown can be a star.
    - TE’s are better, have you seen Ladarius Green, case closed.
    - Did I mention Norv isn’t coaching this team.
    - DLine Reyes & Liuget will get better, and the depth behind them looks acceptable after the last 48 hours.
    - OLB will be better, because Freeney looks like himself after recovering from high ankle sprain.
    - ILB’s should be better, the whole unit can really run and they can cover out of the backfield.
    - CB’s will be better from the simple fact that Cox & Wright are better than Cason/Jammer.
    - Safeties will be better, by the fact that Gilchrist & Taylor are better than the veterans scrubs they played last year.

It must be that I am a non objective rose colored glasses fan, because my eyes tell this team is better in every facet and the coaching staff is better, plus they are young and should get better.

P.S. It really sucks to not have your computer for 5 days, while it gets fixed, to then be told it better to buy a new one, because fixing it is not cost effective.

    • Nick in PB

Sergio, great post as always. You pointed out some great facts there. We have improved at nearly every position from last year.

      • Sergio Quintero

The OLine is the true key for everything on offense, but not having Norv should not be understated.

Norv’s gameplan is probably the most demanding of any offense in the NFL in terms of level of difficulty for an OLine, he runs power dives with basically no cut blocking or zone blocking to speak of. Its power on power, with a bad OLine its a formula for constant failure. To combine with a 7 step drop pass offense, which makes no sense with a putrid pass blocking OLine, but the guy was persistent to his beliefs.

      Sergio
Do you think any of the other AFC West teams have improved?
How about the other three AFC divisions, have those teams improved?

      • Sergio Quintero

KC has improved greatly probably more than the chargers, they probably have a more talented roster than the chargers, but their grease fire last year was at QB, followed very closely by their #2 CB, both have gotten major upgrade in Alex Smith & Sean Smith. I still have major questions about KC, will they learn to win games, and can Smith produce without Harbaugh, but no question major improvements.

The Bengals are in position to take a major step forward, I love their roster but I still have questions on Dalton, he seemed to have reached his ceiling, and its hard to win with a mediocre at best QB. But still they should win 10-12 games.

The dolphins should be the other team in the AFC that takes a step forward with major signings, and a young team that should take steps in their development, surrounded by bad teams AFC east teams and a substantially disarmed Patriots team.

The rest of the contenders are a little less talented and older (Ravens, Steelers, Patriots, Broncos) than they were in 2012.

I just watched the LT Football life. I saw what left when AJ & Norv left. What arrived when TT & MM showed up. Thank you LT. Because they should win it for him. I love that they tried to bring him back. That happened.

That shot of LT & PR being treated on the sideline at the same time really hit home. These are two warriors

RE: Your article on the Chargers success. You must be smoking the seat cushions from your car. Apparently you have not read the other professional writers when it comes to my Bolts. They are in a rebuilding year and may improve (somewhat) or go in the dumper before we see improvement in the win-loss column. Make your comments after Monday night’s meeting with the Texans.

Are these the same professionals that picked the Chiefs to win the division last season? Cool.. thanks
