I can’t help but wonder how on earth AJ Smith even has a consulting job with the Redskins. He made some real costly blunders during his tenure with the Chargers. They are saying on NFL.com that the Robert Meachem signing could end up going down as the biggest FA signing bust. Then there is Ryan Leaf, then there is Gaithers, then there is letting VJax walk. Man, how is this guy even working?

He has to be embarrassed at his sub part performance.

    • Michael Johnson

AJ Smith was not responsible for Ryan Leaf. The rest, yes. He also did a few good things early on before he started overthinking everything and before the power got to his head. He was considered the Top GM in the league in 2004, and I remember reading this articles and loving him. His magic in the 2004 draft was amazing. It’s easy to sit back and look at Kaeding/Merriman now and consider it a bad draft, but we all know how valuable that draft was to the team early on. He did do a few good things – they were just all so early on.

      • Stefanie Smith

Yeah, I stuck Leaf in there. I was thinking AJ was around back then. Shows I don’t know Charger history.

        • 1961 Fan

          Double Duh.

      • Stefanie Smith

Michael: I can’t say for a fact, but I often wonder if the Spanos kids and family have a big hand in messing up the team. They sort of remind me a little of Jerry

        • Brandon

You know whats funny is the spanos family is good friends with Jerry jones.

        • 1961 Fan

Duh! You are just figuring that out. Thirty seasons of screwing up my Chargers. Just maybe he has chosen two people who can fix this mess called a team.

AJ, in the beginning was a really good GM. Unfortunately, after we had a stacked team, I think he tried too hard to find those “diamond in the rough” kind of players. Players with upside that could develop as starters as time went on. The problem was Norv. Norv never developed talent. He was not a teacher. Norv just let the talent rot. AJ brought in some good players. Look at our D Line guys. His drafts through 2008-2010 were horrible. All reaches. He let his ego get in the way. A detriment to his own success.

Good comment, but can’t blame AJ for Leaf, However, he now reminds me of Beathard (the bottom fisher) who took the bolts down so far that Leaf was a choice. Had Indie taken him and we got Manning……..
The ’05 and ’06 draft looks like a fluke now.

      • Derek

I forget who but they said it best aj ruled the gm like he was the smartest guy in the room. Kinda like Jerry luckily for us aj had someone to check him. At best aj is a great scout, he can recognize talent but needs someone to concurr so the redskins got a good pick up hell they stole Kerrigan and we got to royal before them. They been thinking alike for a while

      • Stefanie Smith

Man, thanks for pointing that out. I thought AJ was with SD back then. It seems like he has been here for eternity.,

    • Derek

He said himself upon his final months he sucked. For better or worse the redskins acquired another good scout. I say scout because I assume all scouts have good n bad picks the gm tries to turn all the opinions in the front office to good picks so they stay out the paper

    • 1961 Fan

The Ryan Leaf fiasco was during the time of that other genius GM by the name of Bobby Beathard. Instead of staying with then Head Coach Bobby Ross who just took us to our only Super Bowl appearance Dean Spanos decided to fire Ross and keep Beathard. It was just a few years ago that some fans were saying A. J. Smith was the greatest, only to be proven wrong just like this years Bolts chances of winning the Division.

      • oregonboltfan

shows a lot about our ownership, let ross go and keep beathard then let maryty go and keep AJ. ownership is the big problem.

  • Brandon

Not to mention Bree’s, turner, sproles, cromartie. Who else’s I’m missing someone?

    • Stefanie Smith

You are so right. There are so many of them.

  • Stefanie Smith

The team has shipped Sean Lissemore to the San Diego Chargers in exchange for a 2015 seventh-round draft pick, reports Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com.

Dallas locked up Lissemore, a high-motor defensive end capable of moonlighting at nose tackle, to a three-year, $6 million contract extension last September.

    • Brandon

I really like what we already have on the defensive side. I really hope they start pulling some offensive line in the mix.

      • arnie

Why? What concerns you about the O-line?

        • Brandon

The depth and experience. If our o line get injured again we don’t have a whole lot to lean on.

          • arnie

You are referring to Troutman, Ohrnberger, and Harris?
Troutman played well, as a 2nd year player, Harris gave up one sack, and beat out a 10 year vet for the swing tackle spot, also not bad for 4th year guy. And Ohrnberger is entering his 6th year.
All in all there is always room for improvement, but as far how they played, i’m not too concerned.

          • Brandon

I know and I’m hoping the best for all the team. Just from what we have had in the past it does put me on edge a lil bit. I hope by week six or so I can breathe a lil better.

          • arnie

Hey you’re not alone in thinking that way. I just moved on, and don’t put, how aj made feel on Telesco’s shoulders.

  • Brandon

I also read a few years back that aj smith was nothing but an ass to our pro bowl caliber players that’s why most of them left with out the chargers trying to keep them. I will take a 2 and 14 season without aj smith then a 14 and 2 with him any day. We can finally start the rebuild process. Bolt up 4 life.

    • Stefanie Smith

Yes. I have read that and heard that also. Glad these new guys are around. We don’t want to end up like Tampa did, where no players wants to come play on our team. You end up having to pay more to get players then.

  • arnie

You know i can’t say this enough, but it sure feels good around here. I mean just dumping all the dead weight (meachgaither) it just feels like this big heavy weight has been lifted off the Chargers.
I feels like i don’t have to worry about the mess that was created, because TT is working his butt off to make this team better.
