Here we go. Here is the 53 man roster that the San Diego Chargers will open up with, but likely will not finish it off with.

Quarterbacks (3)
QB1 Philip Rivers
QB2 Charlie Whitehurst
QB3 Brad Sorensen

Notes:
If Philip Rivers goes down, we have a couple of decent quarterbacks to hold down the fort. DECENT. Whitehurst showed that he can step in and command the team if he needs to during the preseason and Brad Sorensen will be unseating Whitehurst very soon.

Runningbacks (5)
RB1 Ryan Mathews
RB2 Danny Woodhead
RB3 Ronnie Brown
RB4 Fozzy Whittaker
FB2 Leron McClain

Notes:
Fozzy makes the squad. Good to see him make the roster. He worked hard and worked his way onto the team.

Tight Ends (3)
TE1 Antonio Gates
TE2 John Phillips
TE3 Ladarius Green

Notes:
Can we get Ladarius Green the ball? I am excited to see him get some playing time with Philip Rivers and the rest of the first teamers.

Wide Receivers (6)
WR1 Malcom Floyd
WR2 Vincent Brown
WR3 Eddie Royal
WR4 Keenan Allen
WR5 Seyi Ajirotutu
WR6 Richard Goodman

Notes:
Does that say Richard Goodman? Can we still have Fozzy return kickoffs? Goodman can be depth at receiver and he can also be help on special teams… covering kicks.

Offensive Linemen (8)
LT1 King Dunlap
LG1 Chad Rinehart
C1 Nick Hardwick
RG1 Jeromey Clary
RT1 DJ Fluker
T Mike Harris
G/C Rich Ohrnberger
G Johnnie Troutman

Notes:
Johnnie Troutman made the roster after starting out the preseason shaky.

    Beltre got cut…

  • zoom

Beltre was cut and Moore made the team.

  • Jt

Comment about Addae not being able to block. Since when can a SS block a huge linebacker on special teams?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

thats your job when you are on special teams.

      • Aaron Johnson

Its also a physics problem that will never end with a happy outcome.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Other guys do it though… If that is his role, he needs to get it done. He’s failed twice at it already.

  • michael

I’m glad Byrd and gachkar made it

  • Los Bolts

Totally agree with your notes Ernie.

Did you disagree with any of the cuts?? The only two that gave me pause were Cattouse and Keiser… But overall, a good job trimming down.

I’m also interested to see if Telesco can score us some depth from all of the cuts.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

just interested in who they bring in…. none of the cuts were surprising.. it was some of the people they kept

      • arnie

        Agreed

  • arnie

    GOODY, GOODY GOODY GOT IT!

  • BigBoltGuy

Bleacher Report has Chargers at #30 in power rankings! Time to surprise some people. Bolt up!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      wow… that is stupid

      • BigBoltGuy

Dudes r morons! But let them underestimate us!

        • Michael

Yeah, I would much rather be there than to be expected to win the superbowl,,,,, again

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Why wouldn’t you want to be expected to win the Super Bowl again?

          • NativeSanDiegan

I’d much rather be expected to win the super bowl. Would need very good OL and secondary with a qb performing at the top of his game. Would also mean quality depth everywhere and great special teams. Yep.

      • JoseSD

What do you expect when the Guy in charge of the AFC West blog for Bleacher Report is a Raiders fan

        • Adam

Yea that’s BS, but I’m glad. Lets shock some people!

  • Daryl Peek

Corey Lynch cut by Titans. He was pretty good with us last season.

    • boltingindiego

i would like him to come back and put addae on the ps.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        Agreed

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Wouldn’t mind that move. Would be a strong move

  • Rob Base

I’m suprised that they kept Goodman and CBJ. I thought Beltre was a lock for sure. Who suprised you guys?

    • Julien Bélair

i really dislike the fact that we kept Goodman. Also i believe Clary would have been cut if they thought someone could be better than him on the squad.

      • Derek

I agree but he should have taken a pay cut till then I will scrutinize him for not being the player we paid for

        • Julien Bélair

I disagree with the pay cut. If he was able to get that money then lucky for him and shame on AJ. But to me pay cut doesn’t respect a contract that both parties agreed and I don’t like that. That’s my personnel point of view

          • Daryl Peek

            Agreed

          • Nick in PB

The fact is, Clary should have been replaced as a RT. He’s going to be better as a guard and he’ll have a chance to prove it. If not, he will be replaced. I think every one on this team knows that if they don’t earn their keep, they will be replaced. I’m surprised that we kept T. Williams over Keiser but you have to believe the coaching staff saw something.

          • Derek

Nah I think that was pure faith that tourek can become what Tt thought he was drafting keeping keiser or cutting tourek would have made the same statement btw did you see the colts cuts former 3 and 4 rd picks. Tt is not a genius but clever enough to know its too early to make questionable moves like cutting your rookie pick or drafting developmental when your not a playoff team (broncos 49ers)

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

For sure… We just don’t have a guard on the roster to compete with him

        • Julien Bélair

for now. I’m sure they will draft a guard in the next year draft and maybe someone to compete now that the cut have been made

          • Efren E Sicat

I got an ideal.. next year draft a LT (Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M, Cyrus Kouandiio OT Alabama, Taylor Lewan OT Michigan)

Then move LT King Dunlap to RT and slide DJ Fluker to RG (replacing Clary) .. Fluker would be a total beast at RG
that what I would do if I was TT

          • Julien Bélair

not a bad move but I think that if Dunlap does a great job this year he could be our LT for the next 4-5 years. Then draft a pass rusher in the first and a guard in the second.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’m not as high on Beltre as others seem to be… but, I would give him CBJ’s spot in a heartbeat.

      • arnie

I’m not to high on it either, but i understand why they did it. McCoy can develop a QB under his watch with no pressure to start, or Back-up. CBj’s contract will expire at seasons end, so even though he won’t start, MM wants a vet in that role.
Goody, another pair of hands PR knows, and can take away kick return duties from Royal, whom they need to stay healthy for the slot.

        • Rob Base

Who would you want to see cut and added to the roster?

          • arnie

See this is the Thing Rob, i’m only interested in what makes this team better. And if TT thinks the O-line is fine, then i’ll go with it. I only carry that mind set because i wanted aj gone, because of how he dismantled this team. Now that TT is here, i want to see what he can produce.

          • Rob Base

for sure a solid point bro A.J did dismantle the roster and its obvious that Telesco is here to improve the organization from top to bottom. He knows what he wants from the coaches to the players. What he’s produced so far from what he had is already a accomplishment in itself.

        • Derek

Royal hasn’t even been able to do that. I hope he proves me wrong this season I was so excited when we signed him. I think I’ve only seen him play well once

          • arnie

Like I said, i understand it. Goody could be here, simply because he is a “healthy option” over Royal. At the end of the day can the Chargers depend on Royal to be there? They couldn’t depend on gaither, so they released him. If Royal cannot stay healthy, i have a feeling he will join meachum.

  • Derek

Brad Sorensen is 25 we should have cut whitethurst and kept keiser by next preseason sorenson would prove if he is a valuable back up or a potential starter. Not saying sorenson proved himself but whitethurst isn’t a winner either and sorenson has more potential

    • Julien Bélair

whitehurst is a pretty decent back up. It is good to keep him this year. Sorenson proved absolutely nothing this preseason.

      • FitzWilly

        Fail :(

        • Julien Bélair

I truly believe that if Rivers gets hurt and Sorenson steps in we are going to loose every single game. With that being said he could be better in a few years from now and thats why you need whitehurst

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Sorry dude… Whitehurst should never have been brought back here in the first place. He is an awful QB. Did you see him in Seattle? It was the Laugh-O-Lympics. The way I see it, we are screwed if Philip goes down, no matter what. So, why not give Sorensen the reps, and develop him… instead of wasting a roster spot, and a good deal of cap money, on Whitehurst? Especially when we are so thin in other areas?

          • jamfed

I disagree. Whitehurst is a very good backup QB. Remember in Seattle, their OL was terrible and inexperianced. Now, that Seattle O-Line is their strength. Whitehurst with the #1s’ is good..

          • FitzWilly

disagree about him being very good
CBJ is below average as an NFL QB
when he is under pressure he looks like a scared rabbit and usually makes poor decisions with the ball
Stan Jr has that special something it takes to succeed in this league, and will be #2 by the end of the season

          • Stefanie Smith

Tebow is alleged to have that special something. See where it got him? What is this special something?

          • FitzWilly

            LoL
            You’re funny Stef :)
            that made my day, tx

            TeBlow is short bus special

          • Stefanie Smith

Some day I will find out what this “special something” is.

          • FitzWilly

            and on that day
we can go out for a drink and all have a good laugh
about the :remember when” days :)

          • Julien Bélair

I see him as a cheap descent backup. Plus, we all know that Rivers is not going to get injured.

          • Gunnar Martin

He ain’t as cheap as he should be

          • Nick in PB

            AGREE!

          • Nick in PB

Peter, I rarely disagree with you but remember this, Whitehurst has never had protection in the preseason. Unless you think the second team O Line is good? I don’t. He was awful in the Seattle game, I agree. I thought he should have been cut. Held the ball way too long. Sorrenson, against the third teamers looked better. Since then, Whitehusrt has shown what he can do with decent protection. Give Sorrenson another year and let’s see how he progresses. This staff will sort things out. I think they already have and I have, no doubt, they are thinking the same thing. One more year.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

He wasn’t just awful in the Seattle game. He was awful as a starter, in Seattle. Behind a starting o-line.

          • Nick in PB

Hey Peter, I certainly agree with you there. And I don’t think he’s as good as Volek was as a backup either but as a backup QB, he is decent enough. He’s certainly not ascending in the ranks. We’ve been fortunate that Rivers has never been injured. Let’s hope it stays that way.

      • Derek

Sorenson looked great as a 3rd string, what you’d imagine Charlie would look like playing with the 3′s with the 49ers 2s he didn’t look so different from Charlie I’d say he looked better which means now we have 2 Charlie’s this season with a paper thin pass rush. Tourek has not stood out yet keiser proved he can expose a mismatch. It would have been more forward thinking to drop Jesus for a nfl pass rusher till the one we drafted catches up

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          Great comments… Ahhhhhh…greeeee!!!

        • Julien Bélair

Keiser proved he can create mismatch againts the third string. Keiser was cut by the panthers for a reason. I agree Tourek asen’T do much this preseason but he has more upside and they draft him so they want to try to developt him. On the other hand, I would cut Ronnie Brown to make place for another Vet pass rusher and even a Guard

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        Wouldn’t say he proved nothing.

      • Nick in PB

True Dat! Whitehurst, though some may not agree, is a decent backup. Sorrenson is NOT ready, period. I’m glad we kept him and after this season, Whitehurst contract will expire. Sorrenson will have his chance then. CBJ could be decent under the 1st team line.

    • FitzWilly

      Amen
      sing it Dee :)

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I couldn’t agree more. Whitehurst is a waste of a roster spot, and has never shown me that he is anything more than below average.

      • Nick in PB

GUYS, we are talking backup, to a QB that never get’s injured! Whitehurst is more than capable! With the one’s, he would be decent. The last two games, when given the chance, he threw the ball on a rope to his receivers. Yes, he might be below average, but heck, there are a lot of starting QB’s that are below average! As a backup QB, he is decent. Seriously, if you are thinking a 7th round draft choice from Southern Utah is an upgrade??? We are talking football logistics here! Suicide if you went in that direction. That said, I’m glad they kept Sorrenson. Maybe next year. The game got way too fast for him on Thursday.

        • Derek

Remember Brady was a low draft pick…. Just saying he’s equivalent to CBj as a rookie for that reason I don’t like that move

          • Stefanie Smith

Sorensen did so well in the last pre-season game. That guy is the placeholder. Be thankful he is still on the team taking up a slot.

          • Derek

He was better at staying upright than CBj. He only threw one more pic. I’d bet money by next preseason CBj will be redundant

          • Stefanie Smith

In fairness to both Sorensen and CBJ, the 2nd and 3rd string o-line was horrible. I believe Starks was on the left. They are both lucky they weren’t seriously hurt. That was not something that is the fault of either.

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Rivers is 31, and if they can’t fix him, don’t think they won’t entertain shopping him for draft picks….

  • thegorn

Deadweight like Goodman and Troutman will be dumped once roster upgrades are found on the waiver wire. Make no mistake these guys are placeholders until something better comes along.

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

Agree, they won’t be around long.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Agreed

    • Adam

I was really expecting and hoping for alot out of troutman WTF. It sucks. I wanted him to make the first team.

  • Gunnar Martin

Goodman, Moore, then maybe Ronnie Brown are the next ones to get cut in case we bring in anybody else. I would like us to bring in at least one defensive lineman, then an offensive lineman. Didn’t a starter from the Titan’s line last year just get released?

  • Rob Base

Ok so what’s making me crazy is who does Telesco have his eye on threw waiver wire and who’s going to be on the PS.

  • shane

    shocked goodman made it. shocked.

    • Nick in PB

Agree here. Goodman, even when a starter does nothing more than run straight up the middle. Seems he either runs into his own guy or into the other teams wedge. No moves at all. He does have speed but usually outruns his own blockers straight into the wall!

  • navw21

I’m kinda surprised David Molk didn’t make the roster. He seemed to be a good young lineman to develop behind Hardwick.

    • Derek

The writing was on the wall when rich was in the game instead of molk

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        Yup

    • Nick in PB

Norv liked Molk to develop… nuff said!

  • arnie

They just waives Gronk, Wilie, and DePalma, with injury settlements.

  • FitzWilly

    Side Note:

Got this from BFB one of the posters

“What’s the difference between a 3-week old puppy and a sportswriter? In six weeks the puppy will stop whining.” – Mike Ditka

    LMAO

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Hahaha

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

My answer was that I wouldn’t shoot a 3 week old puppy in the head.

  • Derek

If i were to find a waiver wire steal I’d drop clipboard Jesus first because I know sorenson can take his place, then goodman because fozzy will be able to consistently soon. Then Ronnie because of the 3 he hasn’t done anything bad just hasn’t really done anything good either

  • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

Really glad Fozzy made it. I don’t trust Mathews to stay healthy based on his record.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      I liked his interview.

      • FitzWilly

i tweeted chargers dot com to see they could get him to say Wocka Wocka Wocka next time :)
        still no response :(

  • Nick in PB

I don’t see why Goodman or R. Brown kept a roster spot. Keiser should have been kept. Still time though.
