Time to look at that 53 man roster again. Here we go:

Quarterbacks (3)
QB1 Philip Rivers
QB2 Charlie Whitehurst
QB3 Brad Sorensen

Notes:
Whitehurst still could be an odd man out here, because we will need to offset the money for cutting Robert Meachem somewhere. We can’t afford to keep Robert around. We also could use that roster spot for an extra corner or defensive linemen.

Runningbacks (5)
RB1 Ryan Mathews
RB2 Danny Woodhead
RB3 Ronnie Brown
RB4 Fozzy Whittaker
FB2 Leron McClain

Notes:
Why didn’t we give Edwin Baker a little more time on the roster? SIGH. I guess we are going to keep Ronnie Brown on the roster. At least he can block a little bit.

Tight Ends (3)
TE1 Antonio Gates
TE2 John Phillips
TE3 Ladarius Green

Notes:
Can we get Ladarius to play with the ones yet? Maybe he s a secret weapon that Ken Whisenhunt is keeping in the toolbox.

Wide Receivers (5)
WR1 Malcom Floyd
WR2 Vincent Brown
WR3 Eddie Royal
WR4 Keenan Allen
WR5 Seyi Ajirotutu

Notes:
Philip Rivers has so much comfort throwing the football to Seyi. It is crazy. He makes plays on the field and we need as many playmakers as we can get. He makes the cut over Mike Willie.

Offensive Linemen (9)
LT1 King Dunlap
LG1 Chad Rinehart
C1 Nick Hardwick
RG1 Jeromey Clary
RT1 DJ Fluker
T Max Starks
T Mike Harris
G/C Stephen Schilling
G/C Rich Ohrnberger

Notes:
Mike Harris got the call when King Dunlap went down and looked good. Need to keep him around on the roster.

    Pretty accurate. Gotta say.

  • Sergio Quintero

Molk instead of Ohrnberger, need a true backup center.

Move Steve Williams to IR, then Addae makes the roster.

    • navw21

Molk and Ohrnberger will make the team. I think odd man out is Stephen Schilling

      • Sergio Quintero

I think Schilling & Ohrnberger are playing for one spot against the 49ers, have a feeling Ohrnberger may be ahead.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          i could see that

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Looks about right, great job Ernie you will be a NFL GM in no time ;)

  • RZ

Looks good…I am lovin DJ SMITH, that dude is a BEAST!!

  • JoseSD

Looks good but I would drop Keiser for another defensive linemen. why can’t they increase the rosters by 2 or 3 players. If they really want to add 2 more regular season games I think it should be 60 players on the roster with 53 dressed on gameday

    • Sergio Quintero

Damn you’re mean, the guy just had 2.5 sack game and you want to cut him. I think he cemented his place with that game.

      • JoseSD

The cardinals starting tackles would be backups on most other teams, and his sacks.came against 3rd stringer and one he was unblocked and Stanton fell on his own while running away

        • Sergio Quintero

May be true, but when a guy produces, you normally keep him. Plus its good for moral, if you put up numbers you stay on the roster. With 95% certainty he’s making this team.

          • JoseSD

He put up numbers like Bryan Walters and Darryl Gamble did. Only Keiser did it for just one game against third stringers for one of the worst lines in the NFL. What im saying is instead of keeping 6 OLB id rather go with 5 and add another D linemen instead of going with just 1 backup at Nose tackle and both DE spots. 5 MLBs is a bit much too but I like all 5 of them and wouldn’t want any of them gone

          • Sergio Quintero

I understand your point, but its still only 5 OLB (Freeney, Johnson, English, T.Williams & Keiser). And you may want overload your roster with LB’s for special teams.

Best solution have at least 2 DLineman on Practice Squad, I’m guessing Brandon Moore is a lock for P.S.

          • alejandro

agree Quinti. Keep in mind, that Freeney can also play DE if needed. you have to keep Keiser for his play this weekend, and because of English’s durability.

Also, other “depth related news” (since Disqus is acting weird, and won’t let me post an article.. lol)
    Per Michael Gehlkin:

“Malcom Floyd is practicing for first time since suffering knee strain. Appears on track for Sept. 9 season opener.”

“Chargers also place CB Steve Williams (pectoral) and NT Byron Jerideau (shoulder) on injured reserve. They’re down to 78 players on roster.”

“As expected, Chargers place Melvin Ingram (torn ACL) on PUP. There remains hope he could return toward end of the season.”

So, some positive stuff there, and some not so positive stuff. I didn’t realize Jerideau was injured. Anyone know what happened? I missed that…

On another note… Chiefs TE Tony Moeaki out with fractured shoulder.

            hahahahhahah

    • Sergio Quintero

Have a feeling that Ingram might play at around week 12

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

    No Troutman?

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Yeah, Ernie… no Troutman?

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        Meh… Not a fan

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          Muahahaha!

  • Sergio Quintero

Isn’t it time to try another player at Kickoff returns against the 49ers, as it look now no way Goodman makes the team.

Would love to find a 5th corner or 4th TE worthy of making the roster, I just can’t see it, maybe some team releases somebody interesting just after naming their 53 man roster.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I get the feeling we are going to see Hill, since they cut Baker first. Maybe I’m wrong… I could be.

      • Sergio Quintero

Royal better bring some value as a Kickoff/Punt returner, because the returns this preseason with exception of Allen’s on Saturday not impressed.

    • Gunnar Martin

I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried Gilly out back there once Taylor is back to starting ability. Who knows, maybe he already is.

      • Sergio Quintero

I think they would like to keep Gilchrist as Safety only if he’s starting. If he loses the job to Taylor then all bets are off.
Royal is the natural fit, but he seems to have declined as a returner.

    • alejandro

agree with you Quinti. A 4th TE, that could also be a backup full back in case McClain (or Gronkowski) go down, and can also play special teams would be a big +. If Phillips is injured, we loose our only blocking TE, which is a big part of this offense. Even with Gates and Green in 2ble TE formation, those guys are there to catch, not run block, so the opposing D would know that in second, no deception without a blocking TE.

      • Sergio Quintero

Some teams are carrying 5 or even 6 TE’s its what it is in vogue in the NFL right now. I’m sure there has to be some slow & strong blocking TE released by somebody out there.

Saludos hombre bienvenido a la pagina.

        • alejandro

lol. He leido varios de tus comentarios.

        • alejandro

          Bring back Randy McMichael.

  • navw21

I dont know if Tourek Williams makes the final roster. Will probably be put on the practice squad.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Not sure if he would last long on the PS. Someone might pick him off.

  • davacho

99% agree- molk in place of schilling. : )

  • EUGENIO RODRIGUEZ

    1 only fullback?

    • Gunnar Martin

I haven’t seen Gronkowski at all so far in preseason. We barely even use McClain as it is.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Would we need another?

  • freeagent

    Who’s the kick returner?

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

I hope it’s not Goodman. The only returnes he know are straight up the field. He seldom gets past the 20.

      • Lee

royal no doubt will get to return kicks. theyll probably keep allen returning punts

        • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

          I hope so.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

It would go to Whittaker or Royal on this squad

  • Lee

scafe looks good in preseason. been a tackling machine

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Agreed

  • Rob Base

I think that Molk and Troutman make the roster for depth. I think Schilling will get the axe. That Berger dude will stay cause he can move from C,LG,RG

  • arnie

Ernie. Don’t call it a come back, but i think Big Mike may push Starks off the roster.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Thinking it could happen too

      • arnie

Just a hunch, but consider the Chargers approach to everything they have done. Versatility, youth and cost effective. Starks in on a 1 year deal as a 12th year vet, if they could Push Mike into being the “swing tackle” and does well, they get a young guy, that’s under contract, and could save some cap space by cutting Starks.
It’s funny how things change. Not to long ago Starks was the savior at LT, Dunlap was joke and Harris was on the bubble to be cut.

        • Sergio Quintero

Don’t pay for past performance, pay for future play. Potential is dangerous, but also keeping declining players. Harris was a good as I have seen him against the cardinals, he will never be a star but he might be credible swing tackle, at best a RT.

          • arnie

And that’s all i could ask for the young man. Big Mike has cleaned up his game and could make the roster.

  • OP Bolt

Ernie – a couple of crazy questions:

    - considering the QB disasters w/ the Bills & Jets – If they were interested, is it possible to trade Sorensen for 2 late round draft picks? This is assuming that the Chargers don’t intend to release him.

    - I wonder if there are other options (besides Whitehurst), would make sense, and when added up free up enough cap space to allow us to also release Meachem?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

We definitely could make that trade… Don’t think we et that much, but possible.
We also could release max Starks or McClain. I am sure we will get there
