Chargers Add CB Richard Marshall To Roster

The San Diego Chargers have reached a deal with CB Richard Marshall. We needed some help in the secondary and the Miami Dolphins gift wrapped that one up for us. 5th round draft pick Steve Williams went down with a pectoral tear and will be out for the season and he was going to compete for some playing time this season.

Marshall will enter into the battle for the nickel corner spot with Johnny Patrick. He is a versatile player that can start at one side, play the nickel or even move over to safety. He will be valuable for the defense.

Good signing for the Chargers. They needed help and Tom Telesco did not waste any time trying to bring someone in to help out. I wonder if he will suit up on Saturday. That would be crazy.

In TT I trust! Nice signing. Now depth at DL, OL, and a WR (a real deal signing would be nice, love tutu but don’t think he’s our go to guy) or two!

For how mutch and long? Something tells me we are going to cut someone for cap space

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

One year deal.. per Bleacher Report. Not sure how much.

      • andrew wall

        probably vet minimum

    • boltingindiego

we have a couple mil in cap space so we are fine for a 1 year deal with marshall

  • arnie

In the bag Ernie! In the bag!

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yer darn tootin, it’s in the bag ; )

      • arnie

The other “teams” had “No chance… no chance in hell.”

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

This guy had more of a chance than they did at signing Marshall… Know whut I’m sayin’?

          • Stefanie Smith

Pete: Is that man actually handicapped or is that a doctored photograph?

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’m guessing that’s the real deal, Stef. Can you imagine being the guy wrestling him? Talk about mixed emotions. You’d feel bad if you took him hard to the mat.. but, what if he starts winning? Lol.

          • arnie

He would never hear the end of it. ” Dude, you lost to a guy with no hands an no feet”.

          • arnie

I was like what? Then it sunk in, there were other opportunities, with more cap space.
At least that’s part of it. but i got it.

  • Adam

I just hope Wright still starts on the right side

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

      I wouldn’t worry about that.

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

A couple of other teams were trying to sign him also.
Good job Telesco!! Marshall provides nice depth

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

We need to get that backfield ready for contention, so this is good news! Having experienced depth, and more versatility can only be a good thing. I am really happy about this signing. The timing was perfect, and I’m glad TT waited. I know that losing Williams sucks, and might have pushed TT to sign a CB. But, I wasn’t thrilled about the Free Agent options before Marshall was released, so I’m glad he didn’t pull the trigger earlier. This is almost as good as any of the other CB signings around the league this offseason… except for Revis & maybe a couple of other guys who might be a little better. Gotta say, I get the feeling that we are not going to miss Cason & Jammer too much. That has been my football fantasy for years.. having a better secondary! With Taylor making an early return, this is getting better & better as the regular season approaches!!!

    • Cgoodness13

I’m definatly not going to miss Jammer getting burnt every play and Cason jumping in front of the receiver before the ball is even thrown

    • Gunnar Martin

Wonder how it’s gonna work once/if Taylor wins the SS job back, and Gilchrist moving back to corner. That would give us pretty solid depth.

  • Bill Nichols

Man I love Telesco! No bullshitting around when his team is concerned, so refreshing, as the old A-hole-J, would have taken his sweet time until the dude was signed by another team. Telesco wants to win, and he wants to win now. Love it. Now get er bolts on Marshall time to get to work baby. Bolt up!!

    • Stefanie Smith

I was almost going to disagree with you on Telesco, but I have to agree that AJ would have putzed around and been cruising around Grossmont College for someone because he knew better than everyone else.

But I don’t have the passion for this Telesco yet. He still has not really solved the o-line problem. It’s not good, but maybe better than it was if it holds up. I kind of think he is putzing around a bit on the o-line. But so many teams are like this, so not anything that TT is doing different than other teams. So many teams see the o-line as an afterthought.

      • JoseSD

Tell me who is available that could improve this line. He improved it at 2 positions with a single draft pick gettingFluker and sliding Clary as much as everyone hates on him Clary is doing better than expected at guard and the running game is way better. Fluker had one mistake not getting his hands on the DE against the Bears and the sack allowed by Clary could be on Philip holding the ball too long. And despite all you heard from Philly fans Dunlap is doing great here. Its no coincidence the protection improved and they started scoring against the bears after Starks was pulled in favor of Dunlap after letting McClellin blow past him untouched to sack Philip. Give us one reason why you dislike Telesco so much. have you seen what Dallas is going through trying to find a guard? The Guy the signed retired after one practice and they can’t find any capable starter, they have been playing RT Doug Free at guard in practice

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I don’t know if he is putzing around too much with the o-line. He went after every starting caliber offensive lineman that he could afford. McKinnie was about the only decent LT on the free agent market, and the draft didn’t have any starting caliber LT’s after the first ten picks.. and nobody was going to let us trade up (Raiders). He was left with table scraps, and signed the best ones he could. Ironically, Dunlap wasn’t a flashy signing, and is outplaying Starks who was the more “marquee” signing. I guess you could argue that he could have taken Armstead.. but, he isn’t a starter. We will have to make do with what was out there.. which I think we got the best of the worst players.. which was all that was left, without mortgaging the future of the team.

      • arnie

Stefanie i have to Agree with you. There is no reason the get the passion for Telesco, but i’ll be clear, i’m giving him the same slack i gave aj his first year. TT will be judged after the season is over, on whether he deserves our “passion”. Right now he has my support, as did aj. See aj “earned” my criticism, but i will not hold TT feat to fire, as a result of the negative emotions that “aj” created.
The bottom line is this, “Have the moves Telesco’s made, improved the team?” If not, then i understand your skepticism. If yes, then put the BS that aj has stained you with, and join us in a new era of Chargers football. Trust me, it feels good over here.

        • Aaron Johnson

Im with you in a lot of ways but I judge a new coach/GM after year 3. By then they should have wiped their hands of the mistakes that preceded them.

I think this was a great signing even if he isnt starting right away on the outside. We need depth and he bring quality depth not just another CB to put on the field.

          • arnie

To each there own. However, “depth” is developed, not signed.

          • boltingindiego

depth is both signing free agents and developing through the draft..

          • arnie

i was referring to the topic at hand of FA. Not Rookie Free Agents. Rookies technically “signed” have never played in the NFL, so they need to be developed. like i stated, to each there own.

      • Bill Nichols

Wait a minute. He is only working within the little crappy budget he was left. Right off the bat he went and got Chad, and King, then drafted D.J., and went after Starks. Those are all upgrades to our line issues, big time upgrades considering. Then Ingram went down, and in a day or 2 he had Freeney signed. I think you are wrong about his passion, and also think yours will grow in time. I understand, we are all still recovering from our A.J./Norv wounds. Remember, he was left with a very small wallet to work with after we got robbed by the big lazy. Bolt Up!!

  • Gunnar Martin

    Get ‘er dun!!!

  • BoltAZ

Great sign, TT is the man! Welcome to the Chargers Marshall! Now I’m more and more excited for this Saturday against the Cardinals. Being that I’m from AZ and a Charger fan, I would really like for the Chargers get the “W”! Hope Marshall plays so we can see what he’s got against Fitzgerald. BoltUp!!!

  • Daryl Peek

I too wonder if Marshall is ready to take some snaps Saturday? I know it’s very early, and he’s doesn’t know the defense but it would be nice to see him late in the ball game. He does have a history with McCoy and Milus.

    • arnie

IDK. They left today for Arizona and he hasn’t had any practice time. So it’s more than likely he will travel with the team, but not see action until the last preseason game. However, MM would not answer on who would play, only ” you’ll see…”

      • Jordan

His twitter says he’s flying in Sunday

  • SuperCharged21

Omg, i just had vision about our defense, somewhere in my mind I am more secure with Marshall added to our roster then what we had, before Williams was out. Then after that I saw the Lb’s and the DL ready to play. The Lb’s with looks on their face ready to kill. The DL with their hands in the dirt. Then Shareece and Derek cox popped in my head, with marshall in the slot. Eric weedle then filled out the rest and I said to myself we just need a supreme safety on the other side of weedle. I’m open to any of the guys proving they can be that guy, but damn, our defense looked elite in my mind.

    Love the signing.

    Sincerely,

    RIo Pacheco

  • FitzWilly

    Well done T^2
