Texans DE Antonio Smith Will Miss Season Opener vs Chargers

Houston Texans DE Antonio Smith’s actions in the preseason game has cost him the chance to play on Monday Night Football to start out the year. He also will not be able to play for the rest of the preseason.

During the Texans preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, Smnith got tangled up with OT Richie Incognito. Smith ripped off Incognito’s helmet and swung it at his head.

At least we don’t have to deal with that problem on offense. We still have to deal with the monster that is J.J. Watt. The Texans defense is strong and will be a force to mess with. Our offense is still gelling, so we will take any breaks that we can get to start out the year.

Any update on Ed Reed’s status for the opener?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

that one is still up in the air… who would you rather have on the field, reed or swearinger?

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I forgot about him until he killed Kellar, he at this point is at least faster then Reed, hopefully his awareness is not so great and we can take advantage of him. I don’t like his “Take the low blow approach” he is going to injure alot of guys if they just allow that kind of tackle to take place with no fine or penalty.

        • joerockt

Honestly I didn’t see anything wrong with that tackle. It was just bad timing and angles. Keller had just planted that leg with no flex in it and the tackle came right at that point. Most DB’s go low on TE’s because of the size difference. Something like Keller’s injury is/was bound to happen.

yea… i didnt think there was anything wrong with the tackle either

        Atari Bigby.

Good question… My gut reaction was that I’d prefer to see Reed on the sidelines and Swearinger player. However,
I’d rather see Ed Reed then Swearinger. I’d like to see Rivers get comfortable and confident in the oline ASAP. I think sacks shake his confidence more and lead to Rivers making bad choices. If Reed makes a play to make a pick, well he’s Ed Reed, and I think Rivers can shake that off easier.

Also, we’re looking very good in the run game and I’d like to see that get off to a hot start. It’s tough but I’d rather see Swearinger out.

When you stop and think that the Texans might not have Swearinger, Reed and Foster for that first game, it sure helps our outlook for that game. A game that many people considered a loss is quickly turning into a “we have a real shot” kind of game…

Good stuff, Texans have there share of injuries like us so I can actually see us pulling out a win. Who is blocking Watt?

I was reading on a Texans site that besides the possibility of Reed and Foster they are also missing their LG and a starting linebacker at the moment.

    • joerockt

Watt normally lines up on the left, so its going to be Fluker. I hope Starks and Dunlap are getting some reps on the right. Hope it dosent happen, but I could see Fluker getting pulled if he’s giving up several sacks.

Hopefully they keep a TE there the entire game to help him out during pass plays. Sounds like the way things are going, we might see double TE’s for a majority of the season. Heck, with Gates, Phillips and Green, I hope we see the old Joe Gibbs triple tight end set! I think the Wiz is a student of Gibbs since Gibbs came up with the tripps WR formation, which we know Wiz like to use, so maybe we’ll see this TE formation.

they run a 5-3 basically and watt will line up against clary and fluker will go against the olb.

        • joerockt

It seems to depend. I saw a few plays where they lined Watt up on the right side, others like how you said, and others where he was on the outside and dropped back in coverage.

    • boltingindiego

      watt vs clary.

Not that I hope he gets re-injured, or anything… but, if only Cushing were to suffer a small setback, or is still a little rusty… I like our chances with Reed, Smith, and Cushing all being out… One can only hope.
At the end of the day, we will have to face good teams sooner, or later. We need to be able to compete, no matter who is in.. or out.
    BOLT UP!

RM24, Woodhead, and somebody, are going to be very busy during that opening game. We should pound, pound, then pound it some more. Quick dump offs, short routs to the TE’s, then heavy dose of mas pounding the damn rock. Love to see 150 – 200 yards total on the ground in our opener. I think our D will hold, as long as we can get to the forehead (Shaub) we will be alright. God this team needs to gel, and quick.
