This Is Our Off-Topic Open Thread

I love the open threads that we have been running during games. I love just talking about the different things that have been happening during the week around the Chargers and around the rest of the league.

THIS WILL BE OUR OPEN THREAD FOR THE WEEK!!

Don’t stop writing on the other posts, we love them, but this is where we will talk about all the other madness that is happening around the NFL.

I will stick this post at the top of Bolt Beat for the week and it will be our spot to just spout off. Let’s see if this one works. The forum page doesn’t seem to be working out too well, but this one seems a ton easier to get to an write on. Might as well give it a try.

What does SD need to do to get more cap room?? Frickin#12, that $$ could be used for more players if they could tell him to go kick rocks…..

    • 619chargers4life

Ronnie brown , royal , meach, And don’t forget Clary .

      • Adam

I wanna keep Royal. He could be a dangerous slot if healthy. The jury is still out on clary. He had that awful play vs the bears, but he could be really good. If not, make room for Troutman

        • Stefanie Smith

I read somewhere they are back to trying out Harris at tackle. Rivers is not going to have a chance.

          • 619chargers4life

i think he played a Tackle during our last game, they got him as a backup RT

        • 619chargers4life

          thats a really big if

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Clary also did terrible pulling on a run play to the left… Got his runningback killed on the play

        • arnie

it’s an IF i can live with Adam.

      • boltingindiego

cant cut meach will actually hurt our cap space not increase it. Need royal since our wr’s corps dangerously thin. Clary can be cut but with lack of depth at guard i don’t know.

        • arnie

          thanks aj.

          • boltingindiego

ya man dude screwed us this year and the next year with the gaither and meachem signings for him trying to save his job. the worst thing is that it didn’t work

    • Daryl Peek

Meach is a fixed cap hit. What’s done is done. Go BOLTS

      • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

        What about next yr?

        • Daryl Peek

His contract is not guaranteed next season. Releasing him would cost the BOLTS a 2 million dollar cap hit, I believe.

          • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Well, if he can’t get his game right now that he’s moved up the depth chart, cut his funky @$$ when they can….TT & McCoy got this…

        • boltingindiego

unless he plays outta this world meachem will be cut next year since we would save money if we cut him.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

LeRon McClain would free up some…. That cap space is needed in a bad way!!!

  • 619chargers4life

I thought our injury situation was bad , the Broncos are getting served as well.

  • Stefanie Smith

Yes, I am a little wimpy, but if I wanted to watch Smack Down or some goofy wrestling program where they just pummel one another then that is what I would do.

This is not sport when people are regularly ripping each other apart and getting carted off the field.

I saw it with the Bears, I am sure it happened in the Raiders game with the Saints, and I saw it last night with the Broncos and Hawks.—leading with the helmet and running through these guys. I remember when James Harrison was fined for this crap.

Nobody is going to make it until the end of the season unless these players are forced off the steroids. They are way too amped up. Someone is going to get really destroyed out there and then everyone will say, “Oh no, what happened?”

Something has to give or we won’t make it past the Texans.

  • Lee

    Is leron McClain still hurt?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      He played against the Bears

      • Lee

        Weird. I didn’t notice

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

We don’t have much need for a fullback on the roster

          • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Not sure if my eyes are shot, but I didn’t notice a FB on any of the runs all the backs had this last game vs. Bears….If the OL keeps blocking like that, all the RBs can tear it up…..Baker, Fozzy and RM were doing good!

          • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

            Ground & Pound!!!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            Yes!!!!! This is awesome!

          • arnie

it’s easy to miss him, when the O-Line is “Blocking”. ;)

  • Adam

Anybody else find it hilarious that Brady got tackled by his own team? I knew he wasn’t hurt the second I heard the “breaking news.” It was just Brady being a drama queen, Belli-cheat being an overprotective troll, and the whole NFL network being the mindless drones to report on anything Pats. Remember when they were reporting on Brady’s hair? More of that crap

    • 619chargers4life

yeah lol if that dude breaks a nail it would be “breaking News” lol

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Hahahaha… The hair thing was funny

      • Adam

Haha funny and bs at the same time

  • Stefanie Smith

There was an article out there where the writer said that from what he sees about the Chargers, they are no different than when Norv was here. I disagree. Even with King and Fluker, the line is better than last year–not when Gaither played, but as we know, he rarely played.

But I do agree that we lack depth.

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

It will take time to build depth/talent….Let’s just hope the team doesn’t plunder in to a Suckfest for a few more seasons to do so….

      • arnie

See right there is what i’m talking about. “Just don’t suck.” i may not know what will happen, but i can say my expectations are higher than 6 wins.
In that chicago game, McCoy equaled with back-ups what norv did with “starters”. 3 sacks, 4 turnovers, in a loss by 5 points? And McCoy can’t squeeze 3 more wins out of a team with a top 10 D? He’s already got the running game going. Do we as Chargers fans still remember what a running games is ?
        I ‘m with that I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801. just don’t suck

        • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Work Up Arnie! I tried to post (operator error & it didn’t post) on your thread where ol’ 61 & Stan kinda sound like they’ve been sippin’ the Hater-Aid too long…

Man to count this team out of it b4 the season plays out is like wishin’ we still had NorF & The Lord of No Rings around…..

I’ve had to sit back and watch the last 2 preseason games via DVR b/c I work nights during the week.

Yeah, my gut hurt from seeing them lose as it always does, but I see talent developing, Butler getting ready to Beast Mode out this year, a Stud rookie QB, a HUGE improvement in the running attack and the sky’s the limit….

Seahawks coach didn’t turn that team around overnight. It helped that they sucked for several years and had a fully stocked pantry of players….SD will be there….J

Just hop on and keep the positive vibe…the negative only brings the SUCK…. Those dudes need a KITH…..

          • arnie

LOL. Most definitely! Hey the only thing i’m doing, is just moving on from being burned by norv an aj. We as fans got a new HC, and a new GM. Now i’m going to enjoy watching them make real changes, to this team for the better.

    • arnie
  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

Footbal slowly closing in on 100 year mark. Injuries just have a microscope on them because of Twitter and social media. Football is and will always be a brutal sport. Technology should be able to provide adequate protection for these super athletes. Players don’t need to slow down. Players need to be forced to where all protective gear. That goes for the ladies in the LFL too. Those ladies play hard!

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Survival of the most fit….Too bad these guys are enhancing w PEDs…

    • Daryl Peek

I remember reading part of an article that spoke on the newer more compact, and lighter gear as part of the increased problems. Especially the concussions.

Thinking back to when i played high school and college ball in the 80′s, it makes sense. Shoulder pads were much bigger and we used to wear really restricting neck rolls back then, on the defensive side of the ball. I can still remember how uncomfortable they were, and how it was really hard to hit someone with your helmet. Neck injuries were rare. Hell it was a chore just turning you head in all that gear.

Back then broken clavicles? I never heard of those type of injuries. Hip pads were huge also. I know some of you older head remember Franco Harris and those big ole white pads sticking out on his hips. LOL

      • arnie

You are correct sir. Excellent point! If the league really wants to preach “safety” then maybe they should revisit making the players slower, with the older gear?
The Charges O-Line coach made knee braces mandatory for the players, how many injuries do they have on the O-line? if the equipment is there, use it.

        • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

If mandatory pads make the athlete’s slower so be it. If it prevents injuries from happening DO IT!! A true athlete will adjust and still play at a high level. Just don’t make stupid rules like don’t lead with your head when running the rock. That’s just plain whack and anti logic!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I don’t care how the media tries to spin it… The Broncos got SPANKED by Seattle! They can try to say the Chargers were worse… Our first team didn’t allow a score, and the game was close until half time. They kept Manning in there well into the second quarter, and only came away with seven points. Seattle had over 30 points by halftime!!! Their running game is horrid!! Then they kept saying how much better the Broncos depth is than ours. Osweiler got sacked a ton of times, and was close a bunch more times. They were shut out for the seconds and third quarter, and only managed a field goal in garbage time against third and fourth stringers when Seattle was simply trying to run the clock out, and not get injuries. The media can say what they want, but we had the same results, but our first team offense only played one drive. And one of their defensive starters was taken away in an ambulance with a spinal injury. They also had a fumble AND a kick returned against them for TD’s. My question to the media is… Were you watching the same game as me, because if so.. YOU ARE DELUSIONAL DENVER FANBOYS!!! Hahaha.

    • 619chargers4life

i feel the same way, its freakin hilarious, Broncos are not that good.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

        On a side note… I would be watching Seattle’s cuts for a corner back ; )

        • 619chargers4life

oh, im right there with u on that note also a DE

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Yes!!!! For all kinds of depth

          • arnie

            LOL!!! is that sarcasm?

    • Daryl Peek

I like to pump up the AFC west moral victory in comparison also but we’ve got to keep the number of first team series in context. LOL Wilson only played one series against us. Freeny summed it up best “I’m glad we don’t have to play Wilson this season.”

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’m not even pumping. I’m just saying that the media is trying to pump Denver by saying they were better than we were against Seattle, when that is false. I’m not excited about us losing that bad to Seattle, by Amy means. Also, Wilson played two series against us.. Both punts.

        • Daryl Peek

I feel ya on the media theme but it’s real. The Donkeys are gonna be a problem and team depth is a huge problem for us. Manning moved the ball and controlled the clock against the Seachickens. Turnovers and special teams did them in.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

So did Rivers. 12 plays on a scoring drive with only one incompletion. We had the ball for over 18 minutes in the first half. That’s controlling the clock too. Denvers defensive depth looked ok, I guess. But, their offense put up 3 points in over three quarters of play. That doesn’t say “great depth” to me. Is Denver a better team? Probably. Did they play better than us against Seattle. No.

          • Stefanie Smith

NFL Network hates us and they were even saying our first teamers basically shut down Seattle’s first teamers…

          • arnie

Team depth looked good against Chicago. as a matter of fact, they looked better than against the seahawks. that’s improvement.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I like that we play them later in the season. That gives us more time to gel. And the bye week is right before that. Denver looks like the same team that couldn’t beat the Ravens last year. Didn’t look good against the niners.. looked awful against the Seahawks. Let them take shots at the Chargers to make themselves feel better. They still suck so far.

          • arnie

Hey i’m just trying to put things into context.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        He played two

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Hahahaha… Truth

  • Michael Geneslaw

It is all because Manning is on Denver. He is like God to the media. When they lose it is a meaningless game but when we lose we suck. Go Bolts!!!!

  • Stefanie Smith

This is going to sound weird, but is anyone else worn out already from this season? I’m getting worn out and the season hasn’t even started. Man, I want them to be okay, be healthy and do well. Just be competitive. All I am asking.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Not yet… Excitement still building

      • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

…Sky’s the limit I tell ya….New Regime, New Era….Everybody put the Hater Aid down….

    • arnie

i think it’s all the mixed emotions. So much is going on, at the same time. Some fans have high hopes, others don’t want to get thier hopes up, for a big let down. And i don’t blame them. it’s hard rooting for your team, when you’ve been burned and let down so many times.
Then on top of it Acee and the media keep sending mixed signals. After a while, who do you believe? that can get pretty exhausting.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

        Preach!

  • Alex Pitrofsky

Vasquez got hurt for the Donkeys, if they continue to have O Line injuries, their horrid running game will get worse and that weak neck of Peyton’s, well we know what will happen there :)

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I don’t mind when they have the injury bug

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

      Champ Bailey too…Foot Injury…

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

When I heard that Hillman was 1st on the depth chart, I knew that will be their weakness. Who coughed it up on the goal line against Seattle? Hillman.

      • arnie

i wonder if he’ll be someone else’s fumbler?

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahahaha… terrible. hope tom telesco is that idiotic to make those comments

          • arnie

LOL He doesn’t strike me as the type.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

LOL… that made me laugh hard!!! You know if it was Mathews that coughed it up on the goal line, it would be front page news, and everyone would be scrutinizing his career.

          • arnie

Exactly! this is what i tried to point out. There is media bias against the Chargers. RM24 doing well is counterproductive to the “expert” opinions that this team will not do well.

          • boltingindiego

well in due time hillman might be known as a fumbler but we do know in previous seasons rm24 does drop the rock alot. But hopefully now he has corrected that problem because hes been looking sharp so far this preseason.

          • arnie

True. This is about “media bias”. every player fumbles from time to time. the problem is the broncos got spanked, an the media has just swept it under the rug like no big deal. yet everyone new, coast to coast, the Chargers committed 4 turnover against the bears. Mark my words, if RM24 put’s the ball on the turf, ONCE, the headlines will be “Chargers Woes Continues…”

  • arnie

Broncos get owned by the seahawks, forcing 4 turnovers. It’s just pre-season. Chargers lose by 5 points, in a game with 4 turnovers, and it’s a feakin’
    football apocalypse.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Awww man, Arnie.. my blood boils.

      • arnie

Why? because of the mistakes, or the double standard?

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          Both.. but, mainly the double-standard.

          • arnie

Keep this in mind, one of these the Chargers have control to change. ;)

  • FitzWilly

    Nice idea Ernie
    well done as usual :)

  • Bill Nichols

Sorry peeps, but I am going to ask a potentially stupid question…. What the hell do they mean when they say, “training camp is over”?? How the…..? What the…? I know we have a roster reduction looming (thank god), but what’s the deal, 2 more weeks of preseason games left, shouldn’t our bolts still be “training”?? huh. huh. tell me. Oh wise ones. :)

    • arnie

For the public. The last day of camp being open to the public was Saturday.

      • Stefanie Smith

Some guys actually go home. They have the regular season game prep and I beleive they cannot start practicing for a game until the Wednesday before each game. They get days off after playing according to the most recent CBA. I don’t think there is a training camp going on right now. But yeah, I could be wrong. The reason I think this is because there was a start date and finish dates on all these camps.

I have a feeling the afc west is going to earn some respect this year like the NFC west did last season….. Except the raiders. Also for as potent as the offense was supposed to be with the new weapons it seems the hole McCoy left hasn’t been filled. I’m confident that Phillip will be in rare form by December again too. Once he gets the timing of the routes and lineman can give him a 3 sec minimum. Not saying we’ll win the division. But broncos won’t win the sb I can bet in that.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Hopefully Rivers starts clicking in November when we play the Broncos for the first time = )

“Also for as potent as the offense was supposed to be with the new weapons it seems the hole McCoy left hasn’t been filled.”

      Great point derek!

      • arnie

Spent all the money, except where it counts…..

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

sweet little pic i just found on Stan Jr

    • FitzWilly

      Nice :)

    • arnie

Remember this moment, we may be the witnessing the Chargers Heir apparent under center.

      • FitzWilly

        fingers crossed :)

        • arnie

Hey i’m not counting PR out yet. You just never know. ;)

          • Alter Ego

Next year looms large. Rivers knows.

          • arnie

Agreed. All he has to do is shake off the norv habits.

          • Daryl Peek

I just read an excellent piece on BFTB on topic.

          • Stefanie Smith

Not much is excellent on BFTB, so this will be close to a first.

          • Daryl Peek

LOL I’m not trying to set trip. I just agreed with that article.

          • arnie

LOL I’ll take your word for it. Sorensen is just a young QB that has looked good so far.

      • Stefanie Smith

Doesn’t mean Sorensen is the next guy. Come on now. You guys act like he is Tom Brady just waiting to save the day. He has had about 3 or 4 sets in two stinking pre season games. Hardly and heir and it’s hardly apparent what he can do. He throws a pass and you guys about pass out saying how great he is.

        • arnie

keywords here, “MAY BE”. He has impressed the two times he’s been on the field. He will develop and be a nice QB on the roster. Neither of us have crystal balls, “anything” could happen between now an 2015.

        • PakMaN

Come on Stef. We’re always looking to get better, and if this kid brings in that type of talent then why not? Does that mean he is better than Rivers? Highly doubtful, but the potential appears there.. much more than CBJ. I for one am excited to see what he can do. I said the same about kaepernick last preseason (my girlfriends team I was forced to watch their games) and look what happened.

        • Alter Ego

Actually Blaine is receiving good reviews from their camp.
I believe Sorensen has demonstrated thus far he belongs in the NFL. Everything else is everything else…you know he will be playing against the Niners in our last preseason game – we will see.

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

and i just found an awesome gif!! amazing!!i may even have to write a post on this.. just because

    http://i.minus.com/ibjDGvebaY44JI.gif

    • Stefanie Smith

I love this little clip. I don’t have sound at work, but he really looks livid.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

People don’t realize what a poor sport Manning really is. Remember when he stomped off to the locker room like a little kid, and declined all interviews after the Ravens loss in the playoffs? There is a difference between being irritated that you lost, and being rude to people, and not being a gracious loser. He’s only approachable when he’s winning. That’s lame.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

no sound on the clip… just him pissed :)

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

      He needed a WaHBurger & Some Cries……

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        Hahaha

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

been watching this replay… noticed that the TD from Sorensen to Willie was a designed run play to the right side, but since the Bears were not set on defense, Sorensen called for a quick snap and just flung it over in the direction to Willie as quick as he could…. HEADS UP PLAY by Willie and Sorensen.

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

    Too easy

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

guess the pic didnt work through the phone.. .here you go

  • Alter Ego

Running the ball…we look great! Thats a strength of our O line – lets let Ryan run the rock. Make or break time.

    • arnie

i second that. if running is working, run it!

  • Pels04

Good lord! I go away for a long weekend and come back to all these injuries. No bueno! Just got done watching the game and 2 things stood out. sloppy play all around for the first half. jitters? idk. Not worried, that will get cleaned up. Hill cant catch if his life depended on it. but what surprised me the most was how good the run game looked. Mathews looked like a beast and once again green had a good game! anyone know the timetable we are looking at for royal? And I’m assuming liuget is fine and won’t miss much time if any?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

royal is probably a couple weeks away… possible for the opening game against the texans

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Von Miller with a possible 6 game suspension now

    http://i.minus.com/ibjDGvebaY4

    • arnie

maybe they didn’t get the fax, to the league, for the appeal in time?

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        So good

        • Nick in PB

          hahaha… deadpan Arnie! Good one!

          • arnie

I’m going to “ride” that all season…..

  • Derek

The best part about this site is when I look at the amount of comments other afc west sites get. Being a charger fan in red skin country I need this

    • Gunnar Martin

True dat!! I live amongst the idiot Donkeys, and this is really the only place I can come to without getting trolled against. It’s awesome.

    • Alex Pitrofsky

Do we comment more compared to other AFC West teams?

      • Derek

Consistently! Look at predominantly orange or just blog baby if their comments hit ten it’s a party lol. I just think of this when we’re trying to buy seats to avoid a home game blackout. Raiders fans are die hard but I think Denver recieved a lot of new fans when 18 signed up.

  • Gunnar Martin

Can you guys believe that the Chefs swapped Baldwin for AJ Jenkins?? That’s just TRYING to tear your team apart!! Haha Niners won big time.

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

I must really need to wear my glasses from now on watching the games….
How was that Bostic hit on Mike Willie not a fumble? Anyone????

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

he didn’t make a football move yet…. but i still saw it as a fumble

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

If he didn’t make a football move, then shouldn’t it have been defenseless receiver? I thought the only reason they didn’t flag him was BECAUSE he made a football move. Not sure if that logic is correct, though ???

    • boltingindiego

i thought that it was a fumble also and was dumbfounded why the bears took a time out instead of challenging that play.

probably was a tough one to win…. already called an imcompletion and might have been difficult to prove otherwise… but if they thought all that in that time, they are really smart

        • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

It looked like a completion, but yeah it was fast……

    • Pels04

I think the rule is they have to take 2 steps or make a “football” move after completion

      • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

There was no way Willie met either criteria….he was too busy getting his clock cleaned….Thanks for pointing it out….I was scratching my head feeling pretty silly on that play…

  • Cgoodness13

Am I the only one thinking that we could maybe put Starks at RG?

    • Lee

i think it would make more sense to put starks at RT and then move fluker to RG…but they wont do any moving around unless theyre are any injuries (knock on wood). they wanna keep fluker at RT and groom him because he can fix his pass blocking skills

      • boltingindiego

it would sure up our rg if fluker moved in but would hurt his development as a rt.

This is really off topic… Does anyone else have nonstop problems with fansided sites loading on their phone? It locks up after taking forever to load the first two pages. Just fansided sites.. It doesn’t do that on any other site. So irritating. Even on my PC or laptop, it takes forever to register new comments. I can see the number says there are three new messages… But, I have to wait a couple of hours for them to appear. My email is quicker, actually.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

is it on the app or is it through the web?

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

On my phone, both the app, and the Web… And I keep my phone CLEAN. On my lappy at home, or on my PC at work, Fansided never keeps up with notifications. I have to wait for it to send me an email. I check my comment, and there’s two replies.. But the sure doesn’t show me, and I have to wait about 30 minutes for an email. Weird. I even used Chrome, Firefox, AND IE… same thing.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

that is all kinds of weird. not sure what happens with that. hmm.. will have to see if any one else is having those same issues

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Probably just me. I have always been….. unusual.

Big day if you’re a Batman fan, Ben Affleck just named the new Batman for the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film. John Hamm from Mad Men would have been my choice.

Plus the new trailer for Batman Arkham Origins looks awesome:

  • Stefanie Smith

Not that you guys care about the Patriots and Brady, but if you watched the Pats-Lions game, you quickly saw what a lousy o-line brings you. Nothing but grief. I really don’t know why teams think of the o-line as an afterthought. Packers are doing it also. Pay all this money for a QB and use a 3rd or 4th round rookie with really no experience to protect Rodgers. Good luck.

The o-line is an afterthought with so many teams. How do you establish a decent run game without a half-way decent o-line?

Brady had no protection and was getting sacked all night long. He talks about flinching and getting fidgety when he gets sacked. Same for Rivers. If that o line doesn’t hold up because we were not willing to invest in top notch talent to fill the position–don’t be blaming that on Rivers.

i had the carolina and ravens game on… didn’t get to see the massacre that happened there.

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

This is why I’d like to see the run run run….punish teams w the run, then let the passing attack begin….

  • Derek

    We got Marshall!!
