D.J. Fluker With A Positive Grade After First Preseason Game

Pro Football Focus is already giving out their grades to the draft picks after their first performances in the preseason. Here is their grade on D.J. Fluker:

11. D.J. Fluker, T, San Diego Chargers
Grade: +0.1
Snaps: 12 snaps with the first team
Analysis: When advertised as a draft prospect, the criticism of the Chargers right tackle was that he was strong against the run and less so in pass protection. Living up to that from day one he gave up a pressure to O’Brien Schofield and got the better of Red Bryant in the run game.

That is a nice positive score from Pro Football Focus. Fluker did have trouble with speed off of the edge and may need some help from the running back when teams place their speed rusher on his side. He still held his own.
He also is a road plow. He and Jeromey Clary should open up some big lanes for Ryan Mathews and the other running backs on the roster to run through. If the Chargers are able to establish a running game, it will open things up for Philip Rivers and the passing game.
I like what I have seen from Fluker so far. As soon as he figures out how to slow down that speed off of the edge, he will be on top of the world.

I think we’re going to see a really big improvement in the running game this year. Especially on that right side.

If you think about it, TT might have gotten us 4 first round picks, by turning Mathews into a first round talent for the first time in his career

?. Sorry bro, I tried, and tried, ans couldn’t figure out what you were getting at? Sure it’s me, but still, would like to know. Say what??

Sorry, what I meant was, you know how the analysts were saying that Tom Telesco got 3 first round talents in DJ, MT, and KA? Well in a way, he might have unlocked a previously unspectacular 1st round pick in RM by getting DJ, because DJ might pave the road for RM to have an elite season

Yes, yes, totally see your angle now. And you are spot on. I too think AJ picked a gem in Mathews, just stole all of his (and the rest of the teams) back-bone. Would be great, and I don;t think it is a far stretch, for Ryan to have his best season ever, by a very wide margin. Yep, I see it, turn that into 4 first round picks in one fell swoop. Bolt Up!!

  • Bill Nichols

I saw DJ push the speed rush past Rivers on one play, looked like he knew he was gonna get beat, so he shoved him deep behind the play. I am sure he will get better every game, that dude is going to be one hell of a career lineman for our bolts. I see many pro bowls in his future, great pick TT.

If he starts to average giving up 1-2 sacks a game, then i’lll worry.
My analysis, 12 snaps, no sacks 100%!
