Time to look over the roster again. Time to list out my prediction for the final 53 based on that last preseason game. Pete already dropped his list and mine is pretty similar. Here is the latest prediction:

Quarterbacks (2)
QB1 Philip Rivers
QB2 Brad Sorensen

On the bubble/on the outs:
I am fine with getting rid of Charlie Whitehurst. He wasn’t given much of a chance with the offensive line he had, but if we lose Philip Rivers for any significant time, we likely are screwed anyway. We can use the money from Whitehurst for some depth at other positions.

Runningbacks (5)
RB1 Ryan Mathews
RB2 Danny Woodhead
RB3 Ronnie Brown
FB1 LeRon McClain
FB2 Chris Gronkowski

On the bubble/on the outs:
Fozzy Whittaker could be pushing for a roster spot. I like what he can add to the team. He ran hard behind a crap offensive line.

Tight Ends (3)
TE1 Antonio Gates
TE2 John Phillips
TE3 Ladarius Green

Wide Receivers (5)
WR1 Malcom Floyd
WR2 Vincent Brown
WR3 Eddie Royal
WR4 Keenan Allen
WR5 Richard Goodman (UGH)

On the bubble/on the outs:
I am over Robert Meachem. He provides nothing to the team. He should do so much more, but just doesn’t. Should we keep Dan DePalma or Richard Goodman for that spot. Goodman was unimpressive in the first preseason game, but he is a player that is good at covering kicks in the special teams game. Any help on special teams could be moved up on the priority list. We possibly could go with Dan DePalma for the 5th wide receiver spot, but he seems to be a stretch.

Offensive Linemen (9)
LT1 King Dunlap
LG1 Chad Rinehart
C1 Nick Hardwick
RG1 Jeromey Clary
RT1 DJ Fluker
T Max Starks
G Johnnie Troutman
G/C Rich Ohrnberger
C David Molk

On the bubble/on the outs:
I don’t know if Mike Harris fits on the roster. We already have a few people that can slide over and play the tackle positions.

Have to find corner5 and DE4 somewhere, this roster doesn’t have them. Have a feeling that both FB’s wont make the team.

On offense I’m not buying OG’s 3 & 4, I’ll keep Troutmann because he’s probably the most talented of the backups, but they have bring in someone else to this roster.

  • Alter Ego

Looks like a realistic roster Ernie.
I would give the nod to Fozzy over McClain…or Brown even. I was impressed with his burst – I like him.
I also like DePalma and Tasker over Goodman. I’m ok with taking a knee on KOs and starting at the 20…better than starting at the 15…16…or 17. I think both of them would be good Chargers – they want to play.
Meachem – it would be great if we could trade him back to the WR needy Saints for maybe some beads or McDonalds gift certificate.

    • joerockt

Tasker. Interesting. Didn’t he just make one great catch? Was that enough to get him on the roster??

      • arnie

Yup. don’t sleep on him. This team is looking to win now, and for the future. Tasker looked like guy if you gave him a chance, he could make some plays for you.

    • Stefanie Smith

With all the great articles that Acee is now posting about Meachem being beat up and done, no one will pick him up and absorb any of his contract.

      • joerockt

Acee is such a waste of O2…

  • Cgoodness13

So before we talk about cutting Meachem, what exactly will happen if we do contract wise?

  • Gunnar Martin

I think I’d rather keep Beltre over Cattouse/Addae. We could really use that OLB depth, and we definitely have our share of safeties (especially with B. Taylor on his way back).

    • FitzWilly

from what i saw, watching the game for the second time
      Catthouse is in the Doghouse
      he sucked big hairy balls
not giving up on Addae yet

      • joerockt

lol, I keep saying Cat-house too lol

      • Stefanie Smith

FitzWilly: What did you see wrong in Cattouse’s performance? Didn’t he make a bunch of tackles in the game?

        • FitzWilly

every time I saw him, he was missing tackles
          his coverage is average
i could count at least 3 times where I said
          WTF is Cathouse doing
i just don’t see him as a bonafide NFL starter

        • FitzWilly

          need i say more

        • Gunnar Martin

I must say, I’m with Fitz here. Sure, he made a few tackles, but if you look beyond what most viewers see, it’s pretty obvious that he screwed up a lot. Making tackles doesn’t always mean you did a great job (if that makes sense).

          • FitzWilly

            amen brother

          • Stefanie Smith

He had the most tackles for the Chargers. Think it was 7. And he may have screwed up, but what were the other players competing for his spot doing?

  • Cgoodness13

I think fozzie and depalma make it over brown and goodman, I herd they are both decent returners and we still have royal also who is a BA returner (though injury prone). And I’d also like to add the special teams that played last week where mostly undrafted FAs.

  • joerockt

Sorensen > CBJ. That is all.

No way we’re keeping both Gronk and McClain. One of them has to go. And we’re not just going 3 deep on RB’s with Captain Clavicle around, so I would say Whittaker makes it.

    Tight End group is solid.

If DePalma keeps playing the way he’s been, he should make the team, but I would rather them bring in a guy like Lloyd. Remember, we’re not rebuilding here, we need to bring in guys that are proven to help a team win. And yes, if Meachump continues to show his lousy play in camp and games, cut him.

O line looks good, but really concerned about the depth. Hopefully a lot of the issues we saw last game were just assignment issues and the fact that CBJ was holding the ball for a decade or two.

I don’t remember seeing Wynn play last week. What does that tell you? Yes, we’re in trouble when Reyes and Liuget sub out.

MLB’s are somewhat solid. Was not impressed with Te’os first outing. Did he even make a solid solo tackle?

    • Sergio Quintero

Agree on only carrying 3 RB’s, but its so hard to evaluate the young RB’s because OLine 2 & 3 was so bad. I felt sorry for Michael Hill, every time he got the ball he was surrounded, no way to do anything.

I want an extra TE, instead of a fullback, since Phillips was on the field so much when Rivers played.

      • joerockt

I think Hill will make the practice squad unless he shows some serious flashes in the next few games to overtake Whittaker.

I’m ok with that TE group. None of the other guys really stood out to me.

        • Stefanie Smith

I just checked around on NFL.com. T’eo sort of fizzled out in the first pre-season. Plus, he is injured now and not playing in the 2nd game against the Bears.

          • JoseSD

The starting defense was on for 9 plays and if I remember correctly Wilson had to scramble 3 times, on 2 passes one was incomplete and he threw a completion to Kearse who was covered by Stuckey. One run play Wright tackled Christine Michael at the line of scrimmage. On the other 3 run plays T’eo was blocked by the FB once on the play. He looked good covering the TE and I think he came out once on 3rd down when they had a nickle defense. So I thinks it’s unfair to say he was invisible or fizzled out like I’ve heard a few say since he was only in for about 8 plays and the defense as a whole did their job holding them on 3rd down and only allowing 2 first downs in 2 possessions

  • Sergio Quintero

John Phillips played almost every play when the 1st teamers were on the field, meaning this will be a heavy 2 TE offense. I don’t think carrying 3 TE’s is enough, and I don’t really like the young TE’s at the back end of the roster. So bringing an extra veteran blocking specialist might be a reasonable way to go.

  • Stefanie Smith

Update: I just read Sergio’s comment and it looks like they are going that route. Forget my question.

  • Stefanie Smith

“If a player leaves the team before his contract expires, the remaining prorated portion of the bonus is counted immediately, in a lump sum, against the cap. Dead money also can carry a hidden advantage to an owner because it allows a team to use up salary-cap space without spending anything more. Some NFL owners have been known to intentionally create dead money.”

This year Meachem’s contract has an impact of $10,625,000 in dead money. No, we probably won’t release him.

    • arnie

i nominate Stefanie to look up all the league rules an stuff….

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

that is $3,750,000 over his cap number already… so we are paying an extra $3+ just to get him off the roster

      • Rob Base

That blows! No other teams want him either.

  • Stefanie Smith

What I found interesting is that Harbaugh is sort of putting one of his first round picks on the back seat, because he is not performing. The NFL writer was saying that “Harbaugh won’t be a slave to Jenkins’ lofty draft status. After all, Harbaugh didn’t let Jenkins get on the field last season after drafting him in the first round.” If the draft picks don’t work out, no matter what round they were chosen, they shouldn’t be used.

    • arnie

draft status should only reflect a teams interest, not an entitlement. I wish more franchise would see this way. couldn’t agree more with Coach

  • arnie

Good list Ernie. just a few thoughts…
QB: i’m not convinced they keep 2 QB’s that was something norv an aj decided since Rivers wasn’t going anywhere. So i made since to not waste the spot. Still does. While CBJ was un-impressive, he was pressured all night an meachum did not help his cause. If Charlie had the protection Rivers had, i believe we see a different result. As the back-up, he would be behind the ones n a real game. Now as bad as CBJ played, Sorensen is a rookie i’m less comfortable with that. The other side, good QB are hard to find, and in a pinch, it might be good to have something to trade.
RB: i think Brown is on that bubble, an Fozzy is in. age is a factor, and while being able to help in the passing game, woodhead, mathews, and even gronkowski can fill that role. Brown is good insurance if mathews goes down, but Baker an Fozzy have proved they can pick up the slack in camp. If McCoy wants versatility at RB, Browns stock may be fading. As for FB, i agree with joe. it either or. right now Gronkowski is the less injured of the two, and in this case, youth my have the edge. Bottom line, if the young player can equal the production, why not save some money?

  • JoseSD

Don’t agree with keeping two FB or both Addae and Cattouse it should be one or the other. And only 2 NTs? Cutting one FB and either cattouse or addae would allow for an extra D linemen and maybe keep Depalma or tasker.

  • Rob Base

Get rid of McLain, Brown and Goodman. Waste of roster space and money. Meach isn’t going anywhere which really sucks. Dudes like DePalma, Tasker Fozzy bear are hungry to produce for the team and are a cheaper option.

  • Stefanie Smith

Just for the record – Ronny Brown does not make a lot of money. In fact, T’eo and Ingram make more than he does. Guys you are talking about are not causing a money problem: Ronny Brown has no guaranteed money, makes under a mill a year. McClain has bigger guaranteed money, but not really big time.

  • Jim

Whittaker is a player. We need a dynamic guy in the backfield, not a one-tool specialist. C’MON FOZZY!
