Chargers Working On Long-Term Deal for Donald Butler

The San Diego Chargers and Donald Butler are working on a deal to keep the middle linebacker in town for a few more years. Butler is going to be a free agent at the end of the year and will be a hot commodity for teams around the league. He is one of the more popular players on the team and is a leader on defense. He is respected by his teammates and should be around the team in the future to help build up the defense.

One of AJ Smith’s problems was his ability to keep core players around. Butler should be considered one of the players to help build on this defense. We need a thumper on the defensive side of the football. We need a guy that is going to punch the other team in the mouth. Butler is our guy. We don’t need to see him wearing another team’s jersey in the future. Number 56 should be in the Chargers jersey for a few more years at the very least.

This will be the first test to see how Tom Telesco deals with his own players. We have some good young talent on this roster and he will have to find a way to keep them wearing the blue and gold.

Happy to hear this. Butler leaving the team would be too hard to take.

Move after move I am more and more impressed with the Chargers decision making. Long term contract with this playmaking athlete is just plain smart. Butler is just getting started! LIGHTS ON!

      LOL lights on

This was expected, and something I knew was coming. Still, I am glad that they aren’t playing hardball, and not even mentioning such an obvious move, like the previous management did.

That is something that i never understood. why would they let a player get to the open market an ask for a price, they could not. or were not, going to sign them for? Most SMART teams, reward the the great word of their players, and get them signed, “before” others offers can be entertained.
aj philosophy was to “let players play out their deals”. then watch them walk. then give the money, “he couldn’t pay” to another player that did not earn it.

Exactly!!! so glad AJ is gone

and by that time the players are pissed and want to sign someplace else….hard to blame the players for that.

I swear Telesco reads our posts….

Sign him up! Butler bleeds blue and gold, he’s a Charger through and through. Lets give him the contract he deserves, and let his loyalty and thanks come out on the field!

  • Adam

The thing with waiting for the end of the year is its a gamble, and a bad one. They would be hoping for an injury or mediocre year do they could sign him cheaper. It’s a losing situation. The fact that they wanna sign him up before the year starts shows they believe in him. I love it, lock him down

  • Gunnar Martin

Oh yes please keep the Butler around as long as possible.

Manti Te’o might get all the attention.
But we know who really deserves it, and it’s Donald Butler.
