Jarret Johnson Sidelined Again; Larry English Getting More 1st Team Snaps

While Jarret Johnson has missed the last 5 training camp practices, Larry English has been getting the snaps with the first team. Larry English!

The next available linebacker after Larry would be 5th round draft pick Tourek Williams. Thomas Keiser would also be one of the linebackers looking to get some playing time too, but he is sidelined with a little injury. The depth on the defensive side of the football is not pretty.

That’s why the Chargers were interested in a player like Joe Mays. The Chargers will keep their eyes on the waiver wire throughout training camp and will be looking for different players that can fill in the gaps.

There is not a ton of money to mess around with under the salary cap, but the team can work some black magic somehow. Keep an eye on that waiver wire.

This might be the start of that hybrid 3-4. Freeny with his hand in the dirt next to Liuget, Thomas an Reyes. Would offset the thin LB core?
But it’s good to see the invisible man, “staying healthy” and making the most of this opportunity.

Butler, Manti and… Larry at linebacker? or we can just run the nickel all game long.

      • Sergio Quintero

The stat heads say that teams run nickel/dime defense on something between 53-58% of the time, and that number spikes to around 80% when facing a spread shotgun team, so truly your nickel defense is your most important package on your team.

We already know that Jarrett Johnson is not a very good pass rusher, and that should mean limited snaps on nickel. So even is he’s not starting English might be playing 40-60% of the snaps.

      • arnie

it is a passing league. Why not play to the teams strengths?

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’d love to see Larry get a full season of healthy football this year and start if he can beat out JJ. He’s like the RM of the defense lol.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i hope for the same. i like Larry as a pass rusher. not sure how he will do against the run and even more scared if he has to drop into a zone, but when have we even see him get much playing time?

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Is something wrong with Johnson, or are they just working out other guys? I can’t remember if he got hurt or something?

    • Lee

yea I really haven’t heard much about his injury and wanna hear more about it. after all he has missed some significant time

  • Adam

Good! I wanna see Larry explode onto the scene this year! He definitely has a chip(whether he deserves it or not) and its his contract year. JJ is good but we need more pass rushers. Lets see what he can do given the opportunity.

    • Nick in PB

That would be nice. He’s got the psychical traits, he just needs to stay healthy and get a shot.

      • Adam

And with the new staff, I think he will!

  • Adam

I’m gonna be crucified for this….but what about Merriman? Hear me out. He would come dirt cheap. We know he has the talent deep down inside him. He would definitely have something to prove. I don’t know if they would let him in the building, but it seems like a minimal risk, maximum potential type of thing. He’s only 29 after all…

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Hmmmm… I don’t know what to think about that. I mean, they DID try to get LT to come out of retirement. Merriman is no LT… can he still play? It reminds me of when they cut Castillo, signed him again, and them cut him right after. Not sure it would work well. One thing is for sure…. he would have to do the Lights Out Dance on every play, just so I could get my fix.

      • Adam

Haha! I still remember when the pats made fun of that shit. I already hated them, but that pushed me over the edge

      • Adam

He just was SO talented for a couple years…that’s what makes me believe maybe he still has a couple good seasons left. When we cut him, I wasn’t sad. I was ready for him to be gone. I’ve stopped disliking him since though lol

      • arnie

Adam is on to something, Freeney, Ingram, Merriman….Sprinkle in the buzz of Tourek an English?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I actually thought this same idea… I just don’t know how well it would work out. Not sure what he has left in the tank.

      • Adam

That’s what I’m saying…we don’t know how much he has left…but you saw that article about how he wants to come out of retirement with the ravens? Maybe he still has a fire. We know he trains hard, and I think there’s a will, and you know what they say about where there’s a will…

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Don’t say “will” a third time… It’s like Beetlejuice.. You might wake him up… Awwww.. crap… I just said his name!!!

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            Oh that Will!

          • arnie

LIGHTS OUT!!!! LIGHTS OUT!!! LIGHTS OUT!!!!

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

Larry English should have played more last season.
He was finally healthy last season and is looking better now in TCamp

I’m definitely excited to see Larry play this season.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I hate to say it, but you can put that one on Pags.
If he did play out of his mind, and even made the prop bowl.. It would be the equivalent of getting a first round pick pass rusher, when we need it the most…. Which he was supposed to be in the first place.

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

I remember hearing all last season how Larry looked unstoppable during training camp.

But was never used during the season.

        • arnie

All the vets they brought in were ahead of him. Phillips, Barnes an Johnson wasn’t going to sit on the bench so he could play.

      • Daryl Peek

From what I remember English was just an insurance policy for Merriman. Correct me if I’m wrong, Acee has written several times that English was just a fill in project at best.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Hahaha.. Chapstick boy reported that? He was DEFINITELY too close to AJ, then. You draft someone 16th overall… To be an insurance policy?

You can believe that if you want, but nobody in their right mind uses a 1st round draft pick on a project, unless you have WAY to much ergo. Oh, wait…. AJ did!!!

Not really… He just swing and missed… Unless he surprises the heck out of us and becomes the beast of the league….then, AJ might be a genius. But, I have a hard time buying the fact that AJ saw him as a project, Dood. He thought he was a good pick, and picked him.. He was wrong, so far.

          • Daryl Peek

I’m sure he thought English was a good prospect. English rated much higher as a pure pass rusher than Clay Mathews in college. Merriman was not done quite yet at said time.

As of now English is another Buster Douglas. Buster had all the tools also. Can’t hate on a player for getting injured! Look at what’s going on so far this off-season. Players are dropping like flies everywhere.

          • arnie

All true. However the entire league, talking heads, and the scouting staff are still scratching there heads on that pick.

          • Daryl Peek

            Hind sight is 20/20.

          • arnie

No. I’m referencing “when” they made the pick. And this was his own scouting staff.

  • Rob Base

It would be absolutely amazing if English stays healthy for a full season!

  • Cgoodness13

    Well how does English look?

  • arnie

I just thought of something, if JJ doesn’t get his butt on the field, Big Poppa Telesco gonna’ cut ya’…
he’s been swinging the axe, with the quickness.
Can’t play? cut. your foot hurt? cut. ACL, cut.

    • arnie

      your old? cut.

      • Rob Base

Your old and injured CUT him!

        • arnie

          LOL
