Chargers Were Interested in Joe Mays

Former Denver Broncos LB Joe Mays says that he chose the Houston Texans over the Redskins, 49ers, Chiefs, Raiders AND the Chargers. Interesting. With the Chargers losing Jonas Mouton for the season, the Chargers seem to be shopping around for a middle linebacker. Joe Mays would have been an interesting option for the team. He isn’t strong against the pass, but he is good against the run.

If the Chargers want to pick up a middle backer, they could try to give former Chargers LB Demorrio Williams a call. Or they could give former Packers LB Nick Barnett a call. There are some options out there.

D.J. Smith would be the first linebacker off of the bench. Then comes Bront Bird. I wouldn’t mind having those guys as the depth there and fill in other thin spots on the roster with some free agents. I also wouldn’t mind picking up more talent on the roster at linebacker.

I think the depth at secondary and defensive line will need to be watched throughout camp.

I would have liked Joe Mays. He was definitely an enforcer, think a more athletic Tim Dobbins. I wouldnt mind bringing in outside help but I also think we have some guys that could step up. D.J. Smith showed promise, Gachkar an Bird are both athletic, and UDFA Dan Molls was a tackling machine in college (http://boltblitz.com/?p=5666#comment-1035)

Would love to get Demorrio Williams back. Dude was a great plug in last year.

I like our guys – rather win with them.

  • Rob Base

Barnett signed with the skins today but Williams would be good. I like what he did last year.

      not yet… but probably

If we do get help at a ILB i think it depends on how gach and bird play at the start of training camp since mays was a proven player and these 2 haven’t played that much.

I think we’ll be fine there. It’s the D-line and secondary I’m worried about. Heck, I guess I’m even more worried about the running backs than the inside linebackers. We really need to boost our depth in next year’s draft/free agency.

runningbacks too… with you on that

Id like to see another run stopping thumper of a MLB too bad Dobbins and Siler were let go a couple years back but I’d prefer they signed another DE to compete with the rest other than Wynn there isn’t much depth there

    Should have kept Takeo.

  • Danny Rogers ✌

    should have kept spikes

Spikes has never made the playoffs, the two years he’s played for us, we didn’t make the playoffs. So I would say no. We need vets that have had playoff Experience, to show our young players how to actually get there.
