Chargers Thinking About The Possibilities Of Doing HBO Hard Knocks Next Season

The San Diego Chargers are kicking around the possibilities of doing HBO’s Hard Knocks next season. Tom Telesco had said that he would be interested in doing the show, but didn’t want to do it in his rookie year. It would be too much of a distraction for him and the rest of the team.

Come year 2 though…. the possibilities are there. Kevin Acee is reporting that the team is “mulling” the idea.

For the players and the coaches, it must be a huge distraction. Why would you want a camera invading your space like that?

For the Chargers fans, it would be OUTSTANDING! I would love to see more of Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates. I would love to see these guys putting in work during training camp. I would love to get to know the people in the organization a little better.

For the Chargers business, it could be a huge boost also. Putting the team on that forum and getting that exposure could be huge for the business.

In the end, if it becomes too much of a distraction for the players and team on their route to the Super Bowl, then we don’t need it around us. Otherwise, I would love it!

I would really love that obviously. I would buy it and own it when I came out. The main thing is I just wouldn’t want it to be a distraction…especially of the team leaders(PR and EW) are against it. I feel deep down like it might jinx out SB chances…

i would subscribe to HBO just for the show!

LOL.. I was thinking the same thing the other day. Too funny.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I agree with you.. I honestly think it would jinx us, like Spikes. After we win a Superbowl, I’m about it all day.

      • Adam

Yep. Lets get that ring, then the HBO cherry on top.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          Exactly.

  • Adam

On a side note, maybe it would get my wife more interested in football!

This smells of new stadium push marketing. Brilliant from that perspective. McCoy seems to be pushing that in conjunction with Telesco. The one charge mantra lines up with it. MCcoy has really been talking up fan attendance for training camp.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

it would be a brilliant idea for that push

    • Stefanie Smith

Where did you get the idea that McCoy is pushing the Hard Knocks deal? Usually these publicity deals are the GM’s idea.

      • arnie

I have to agree with Stefanie on this Daryl. if you read the article by the U-T, i sounds if the front office is in favor of it. but the coaching/player side is not a fan. The bright spot is it sound like they would be for it if the entire organization were in agreement. And they had a clear plan of what access would be given.
Now as far as Stadium push goes, know what else works?
        winning.

        • Alter Ego

          hahahaha

        • Daryl Peek

As a BOLT fan I don’t like the potential distraction but it makes sense from a business perspective. Especially given the current stadium plight. Hard knocks would bring the media back to San Diego football.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

exaclty… and this game is driven on the business. If I owned the team, I don’t know how i couldn’t do it.

          • Daryl Peek

Just the fact that they are considering it when it was always HELL NO under AJ and Norv speaks volumes.

          • arnie

I agree. I just believe winning cures all. See if the Chargers did go 7-9 then they get the media attention, on Hard Knocks, as a distraction, and under scrutiny. The talking heads would line up to say, “…we told you so…” attitude. Only now they would be under a magnifying glass instead of a sleeper.
Stefanie said it best, 9ers Broncos, Packers, Pats don’t do it. why? they’re winning organizations and don’t need it.

          • Daryl Peek

Well I know this is apples to oranges but both the CowBUMS and Jets got new stadiums during the hard knock life. lol Neither team has truly been a winner over the last decade. Hell, most teams that have gotten new stadiums haven’t been. Winning over a long period of time is what will help the stadium cause. The NFL has already told Daygo, no new stadium, no Superbowl!

          • arnie

You are correct, however the boys got there stadium because the owner is a texas billionaire, and the jets Share a facility with giants. Also the land to build them was Way cheaper than California.
I’m not against Hard Knocks i just think it doesn’t matter one way or the other. the money will go into the spanos pockets, and the city still has to agree to spend public funds to build. The 9ers were not on the show, yet they start winning again, and the measure to build a new stadium, that took 20 years, finally is getting done.

      • Daryl Peek

Why wouldn’t the HC be on board with his GM who hand picked him? McCoy has been pushing fan attendance in most of his training camp interviews. And again the One Charge mantra is a fan marketing theme. Just my humble observation.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’m too cheap to pay for HBO anyway.. so my vote is NOPE!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Hahahaha

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Dear San Diego Chargers & NFL,

Please don’t make me buy more football stuff = /

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

omg…. i am right there with you.. haha

  • Gunnar Martin

I say if we are more successful than what is expected of us this year, then we shouldn’t do it. Why take a possible step back after we are already on a roll? But if we finish anything below 7-9 this season, then I would be all for it. I would love to see more of my favorite organization ever.

  • Stefanie Smith

When the Packers do it, or Broncos, or the Pats or 9ers do it, then okay. But SB bound teams don’t do it. Neither should we. Remain focused and keep your eyes on the prize. Bad idea, TT.

I can’t figure why the Bengals are doing it.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

What up dudes, I think this would be awesome and as Ernie said I would also get HBO just for this.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

where in the world have you been!? ?

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

We have been wondering where you went for days!

  • Alter Ego

I’m all in. I don’t believe it would distract from the SB focus at all. I love the idea – the best fan inclusion opportunity bar none.

Put me down for a big…

  • Pels04

I agree it will probably be a distraction, but how cool would it be to see them next year from the beginning all the way to winning the Super Bowl?!?

    • Daryl Peek

That would be AWESOME *Eagles game blank stare*
