Impressions On First Day Of Chargers Training Camp

Jun 12, 2013; San Diego, CA, USA; San Diego Chargers linebacker Manti Te

Here are some notes from one of our Bolt Beat faithful followers Arnie.

I was there. first impressions

Eddie Royal caught EVERYTHING, except 1 ball CBJ (Clipboard Jesus) threw behind him. DX (Danario Alexander) is the clear #1 WR. VB (Vincent Brown) is a play maker. Malcolm made some amazing catches. Richard Goodman should be good 4 possibly 3. The rookie Keenan Allen looked well like a rookie. Robert Meachem……. looked overpaid.

The offense I did not recognize it, with all the quick slants and 3 WR sets, it was amazing how easily the offense moved the ball. Philip Rivers passing from under center in no huddle, 3 an 5 step drops? WT…? Danny Woodhead, Fozzy Whittaker, Michael Hill, these guys can ball. Ryan Mathews fumbled, then picked it up and did not do so the rest of the practice. Chris Gronkowski, do not sleep on 44 he could take Ronnie Brown or LeRon McClain’s spot. Antonio Gates looked like the “HEALTHY” 8 time pro-bowler that he is. it was also good to see him going through “blocking drills”, and doing it well.

King Dunlap, STUFFED EVERYONE, including Dwight Freeney. Jeromey Clary was impressive. DJ Fluker was a monster, and let Freeney know it as well, by putting him on the ground. the O-line, MUCH improved.

Manti Te’o, was focused and always where the play was.  He covered and clogged up holes in the run. 4.89 my foot, he can play. Donald Butler, yeah the Butler did it all day. Freeney didn’t look like he’s been playing for 12 seasons, I guess he’s going to get re-acquainted with an old friend in Denver. Shareece Wright, that side of the field is covered. He proved it by making WR drop balls including Floyd. Jahleel Addae? Brandon Taylor had better make a quick recovery, for a rookie Eric Weddle didn’t have to do much. Cam Thomas, Kendall Reyes, Corey Liuget, I wouldn’t worry about those positions anymore. Byron Jerideau? Kwame Geathers? i wouldn’t worry about depth either. those kids are MASSIVE and forced CBJ to run for his life a few times.

well.. that’s all i can think of…

Those are some awesome notes from Arnie. If any of you all went out to training camp, we would love to hear your reactions to what you saw out there. Just hit up the comments section and share that info to everyone. We will definitely post some of the different notes that you all have out there.

I’ve always said Dunlap was not at fault, Vick being left handed and that terrible coaching staff in Philadelphia

  • Pels04

Thanks for the much needed info fellas! I know Arnie keeps it real so this report has me even more pumped for the season. Its a shame i live 1500 miles from SD but im glad i have guys like you to fill me in! Keep it coming por favor!

  • Stefanie Smith

I just read predictions on NFL.com written by Marc Sessler. His prediction for Rivers: Week 1 starter for Cleveland in 2014.

    Great. Just great.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

You need to stop going on there, Stef LOL.. unless you really just like “doom and gloom” news about the Chargers from people who have the East Coast teams stuffed so far up their asses, that they think the flag still has 13 stars.. lmao!

      • Stefanie Smith

I go there hoping to read outsiders writing positive stuff about the Chargers. No offense, but we are like family. We’re always going to like the Chargers.

It would be better coming from somebody that doesn’t care for the Chargers but recognizes that they are good.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i understand. you will have to wait for those good words to come from that direction.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I totally understand, Stef. I used to go there, expecting something intelligent to be said… But, I gave up long ago. The NFL Network just doesn’t say nice things about West Coast teams unless they HAVE to. The Chargers could go 8-8, and the Giants could go 7-9, and they would make excuses for the Giants.. but, say the Chargers are on skid row, and a bad team, know what I mean? O’Hara is always going to jock the Giants, Irvin is always going to jock the Cowboys.. and so on. Most of their writers have no clue what they are talking about. Not to mention, they will only focus on what gets them ratings.. talking non-stop about Dallas, New York, New England, the Ravens, the 49′ers.. it’s what they do. The 49′ers (and even the Seahawks) had to completely DOMINATE before they would even sneeze in their direction. But, crappy East Coast teams like the Eagles, and the Cowboys constantly get media attention, and are talked about in a positive light regularly Even when they are saying bad things about them, they will follow it up with a compliment of some kind. I have been watching it on NFL Network for years, and during pre-game shows for 3 decades before that. It will never change. I just ignore it. Philip going to Cleveland in 2014? Is he friggin’ serious?!!!! What a joke.

          • Nick in PB

Once Rivers returns to his old self he will start to realize that Norv WAS the problem. He will not be going to Cleveland. This staff is going to help him leaps and bounds over what Norv Turnover did.

          • arnie

he’s looked better, than his old self. i’ve never seen this offense. i could not tell where they ran the ball, or if it was a pass…

          • Nick in PB

ESPN is seriously west coast deprived! OMG, if I hear another story about the Jets on that station, I’ll be yacking all over my coffee table. The Jets are totally irrelevant at this point and yet ESPN keeps reporting the same old crap about them. This morning, all I heard about was Patriot camp. I don’t get NFL Network so I have to harp on what I do get. Even taking the Chargers out of the equation, the Niners and Seahaws are 2 of the best teams in the NFL. You would think they would report on them but noooooo, they keep rehashing the same old crap about the same old teams. Jets, Patriots, Redskins. I suppose I’m not missing anything not having the NFL Network.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

LOL.. I hear ya about the Jets… WE GET IT… they drafted a new QB, and Sanchez still sucks. There is a competition.. big friggin’ whoop! Same thing with the Eagles. Vick has competition.. this isn’t an “every day / all day” update sort of thing. Spending more than thirty seconds a week talking about it is too much… talking about it 5-10 minutes a day is ludicrous!

          • Augie Baza

Tell me about it. I picked up a fantasy football magazine and read how the Chargers had an F for thier Offseason transactions. PR was rated the 25th QB and the offensive line was ranked 32 in the NFL.

          • Augie Baza

Oh and RM was raned 32 and the WR corp was the worst in the NFL. NOTE to every one tha plays Fantasy Football. Don’t reach for Chargers players. They are all sleepers.

        • Alter Ego

Stefanie I think the Chargers were picked over and over again to be SB contenders…we burned our bridges and their credibility. They’re mad.

      • Pels04

im assuming by stripes you mean stars :) ……..i got your back ha

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I caught it right after I posted it, and edited it myself LOL. Weird.. I edited it before you even posted.. wonder how come you still saw that? Disquis has it out for me.. lol.

    • joerockt

Only way something like that would happen is if Rivers repeats what he’s done the last few years. IF that happens, its a good thing the 2014 draft will be filled with good QB talent.

    • Alter Ego

hahaha…thats a great comment. I’m glad you posted it.

  • Stefanie Smith

Arnie: How do you think Rivers did? Seriously. I have a knot in my stomach after reading that crap over on NFL. com.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

you might have to stop looking over in that direction. that is crazy talk…NFL.com also has been pumping up Brandon Weeden. Why would Rivers head over there to replace someone they are high on… they also a high on Norv… enough said

      • Stefanie Smith

I can always count on you, Ernie–. Putting away the Maalox for the time being.

    • arnie

I will be completely blunt. The “last chance” articles at the NFL network is “COMPLETE CRAP”. The problem was lack of talent around Rivers, protection, and creative offense. Rivers did not do any 7 step drops. zip. as was a staple in norvs offense. he simply looked comfortable. when Gates came into the lineup, “on a quick slant” it was like stealing. The only passes that hit the ground, were passes that were well defended. the DB didn’t get any floaters from him. No turnovers. No INT’s. Why? because the offense/O-Line and short passes didn’t give the defense a chance to get near him. So when he got good protection, he went downtown with DX, Floyd, Royal, an Brown, all day.
      He forced nothing…..

      • Stefanie Smith

thanks so much, Arnie. Glad to read it from you.

  • Mz. Sarah

I have a nice feeling Rivers is going to way better protection this year!!! #flukernation

    • Stefanie Smith

      I hope so, Sarah.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Me too! Honestly, I don’t even think it has to be “great” protection. It just has to be good enough for him to have a little time, and to hold up when it really counts!

      • boltingindiego

i like the quick Passes let his wr’s and te’s make plays with the yac.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Whatever we gotta do so he doesn’t have to carry the team is muy bueno for me!

  • joerockt

So great they are practicing no huddle! Was hoping for this. We have an extremely smart and veteran QB, it just makes total sense.

Will be there Saturday, can’t wait.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

yes…. noticed that too…. never understood the stubbornness to not use the no huddle.

      • boltingindiego

i might be wrong but i don’t think norv ever did no huddle except in last minute drives. just not his O.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          It’s true. Never did

    • Bernie Thomas

and on day one no less. it is a good start.

  • tom v

I was out at the first practice as well and agree with all you said! I like FA CB Josh Johnson from Purdue also. He showed well in coverage and looked smooth returning punts. He appears to be a playmaker, keep an eye on him.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      nice… thanks for the input!

    • arnie

See, i missed that one to. You are correct, there is A LOT of talent in that backfield. we’ve been looking at it as if Weddle, Cox, Wright, Brandon , Gilcrist and Addae are the only options. they are not.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

How was Cox? You get a look at Gilchrist?

        • arnie

He didn’t get many reps, a lot of the young guys were out there. i’ll see i have to do a better job on him next time….stay tuned

  • Julien Bélair

looks like freeney got pwned by everybody….

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      hmmm….

    • Alter Ego

      what does that mean?

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Pwned is gamer slang for owned

  • Daryl Peek

My take on Rivers on the hot seat this season is, it’s a good thing. PR is not an old dog yet but he must show us he can learn some new tricks. Being able to throw on the move is one of them. I’m sure Mccoy is not expecting PR to be Vick like but strictly pocket passer only is not gonna fly in the NFL anymore. That’s too much pressure on an O-line. Brady and Manning are not fleet of feet but can manage outside the pocket from time to time when needed.

I also have a good feeling about the run game. That will take pressure off Rivers. Norv emasculated RM24 IMO. Plenty of young backs fumble early on. A good HC will keep giving him the ball. Injury to RM24 is my only concern.

Mike McCoy on Ryan Mathews: “We’re going to reinstill the confidence in him and get him going. … We’re going to play multiple backs.”

    • arnie

Why should he move? it gives him an added edge, for sure, but to be honest, he looked comfortable back there, and nobody could really get past Fluker or Dunlap to harass him. As far as RM24, the rest of the running game could pass him by, if he doesn’t step it up. the RB situation well in hand with what i saw in camp. even if mathews goes down.

The way McCoy seems to be approaching it, he’s another RB, and it’s up to him to separate himself.

      • Daryl Peek

I like McCoy’s overall outlook. PR is gonna have to step up also.

        • arnie

PR did his part. it showed.

      • Nick in PB

I don’t see Philip moving much. Not his strength. Maybe a sidestep or to step up in the pocket. That’s his game. If he’s chased beyond the tackle position, he should just throw it away. Hopefully, he won’t have to worry about that this season. Nice to hear that Dunlap is giving Starks some competition!!! Maybe this coaching staff can get the best from him.

        • arnie

Agreed. but with what i saw, he now has the option to side step, or step up into a pocket, that didn’t exist last season.

          • Nick in PB

Last season, there was a lot of pressure up the middle on Philip. We should be much stronger in that regard. While not a mobile QB, he has the presence to side step or step up instinctively. If he can do that and doesn’t have to do more, he will return to the QB we all know he can be.

          • arnie

I know. That why i said it “didn’t” exist last year. there was no place for him to side step or step up. the pocket collapsed more often than protected in 2012.

  • Mike DeWitt

No mention of Royal? I heard he had the most catches and looked exceptional out there today.

    • Daryl Peek

Preconditioned omission. Many BOLT fans are sour on Mecheam and Royal from last season. Acee tweeted Royal was catching everything thrown near him. Royal did have his best season as a pro under McCoy.

    • arnie

Hold on? did i say llioyd or Royal? OH SNAP Ernie Changed Royals Name to Malcolm at the top! DOH!
it was Royal that caught EVERYTHING… minus 1 pass….

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Nice! Finally! Keep those hammies limber mang!

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Well dang it. You wrote Lloyd and was trying to figure that part out. Correcting now

  • Bill Nichols

Your killing me!! I wanna see, damn it! Hard to see my bolts from way over here in Austin. Keep us posted guys, sounds great so far, I knew Manti’ was way faster than the posted 4.8 – 40, dude is around the ball way too much to be a sloth, and those college kids are fast. No old veterans running around division 1 schools. I hope like hell he takes the rookie of the year. Bolt Up!!

    • arnie

that’s called ball Skills Bill. You see this is what i’ve been harping on, he’s smart. really smart. I watched him get irritated with Bird, trying to make an adjustment, he shoo him away to his position. It’s like he new EXACTLY where was supposed to be, an he was in Woodhead face when he snapped the ball. Then forced him to bounce outside.

  • 619chargers4life

i hope Freeney’s calf is ok

    • arnie

it was. he came back out and did his thing. Did i mention Fluker put him on the ground? that’s how he tweaked it.

      • 619chargers4life

I seen all the vids and pressers on it after posted the comment . Part of me wants to say Fluker needs to take it down a notch but the other part is like go hard or go home, but we need Freeney on that that field

        • arnie

LOL yes he does, but you should have heard the whole crowd when he did it. LOL
it was like Freeney was about to plaster PR, and DJ flew out there an BLAM! LOL

          • 619chargers4life

            Lol that’s awesome !!!

  • davacho

thanks for the notes! can you expand on this- i’m a little lost: “Jahleel Addae? Brandon Taylor had better make a quick recovery, for a rookie Eric Weddle didn’t have to do much.”

    thanks! : )

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i think he meant that the kid was able to do things without getting much help from weddle….maybe.

      • arnie

Yes what Ernie said. See what happens when you miss time, the next guy up is out to take that spot.

    • boltingindiego

jaheel played well and weddle didn’t have to cover for his mistakes on plays.

  • Jeff

Hey Earnie, did you see Keenan Allen puking into the trashcan during practice? Nerves, or working out to hard?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

he said something about a bad shake that he had for breakfast… i bet it was a little bit of working too hard and nerves though

      • arnie

Something was off about the kid. but he needs to step i up…

  • Jonah Lee

    Good work!!! Keep’em coming!!!

  • Joel

I’m up here in Alaska! Help! I was in San Diego this spring and went to the chargers park. I would love to be there right now (sigh) thanks so much for keeping us informed, it’s nice to hear some non-biased charger fan views vs the paid staff writers with varied allegiance. They, like dumb drones repeat the popular propaganda which is mostly based on biased east coast oppinions, people who have so much smoke blown up their asses that its coming out of their ears… Nuff said.

  • Joel

Also please tell us who is struggling even if they are a fan favorite. We can handle the truth and we want it to!!!

    • arnie

Ladarius Green, Dallas Walker, Dan DePalma, Mike Hermann, Edwin Baker, just off the top of my head, that caught my eye.

  • Alter Ego

Fantastic stuff Arnie . Get a press pass and talk to our guys.

    • arnie

LOL, they would only say the scripted thing. It’s best for me to chat up about what they do on the field. After all, isn’t that all that matters?
the time for talk is over….

      • Alter Ego

Yeah…but you have earned our trust.

  • Bernie Thomas

I just think it was funny that everyone looked great. If someone looked great, you would think someone else looked bad, or at least mediocre.

I am all about being optimistic, but someone had to look bad. I need to get down there one of those days before my football season starts……

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      norv turner looked bad… right?

      • Bernie Thomas

If he was there, he would have.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

He did say Keenan Allen and Meachem were just meh

      • Cgoodness13

His play calling & his neck yes lol

    • arnie

that’s the thing, there really wasn’t a lot of looking bad, it was a lot of back an forth. Wright got burned by DX, than defended a pass intended for Floyd. The team just looked solid.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I kind of expect that anyway, with no “actual” pressure on the QB. Philip has plenty of time to make a throw when there is no real threat of being taken down.. even if the D-Rush is still coming at him.

        • arnie

True. The rule is you can’t hit the QB. Nowhere does it say you can’t put a move on the O-linemen. And the defense did. A few times.
it was back and forth all day. some plays the D got Stuffed. others, Guys got into the back field and caused problems. Example; CBJ bailed out and ran a few times, because the coverage was solid and Gachkar was in hot pursuit.

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

I got wood after reading Arnie’s notes….got my payments going already for my NFL Sunday Ticket….can’t wait….

  • Nick in PB

Hmmm… I see a lot of references to our man Arnie yet I don’t see a single post? Must be on another article. Thanks Ernie for posting a report. I haven’t been to a training camp practice in years. I think that might change this season!

    • Nick in PB

OK… i’m a dope. I see those impressions were from Arnie. Good job Arnie. I think your article is getting us all pumped up!

      • arnie

i’m happy i could get it all down. there was so much i missed. Like Mike Scifres booting to the 20, from the other 20….

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

You and Arnie ate my old school dawgs, Nick! This is the year!

      • Nick in PB

You know it Peter!!! I truly believe this team is headed in the right direction. If the offense improves, and with Norv gone, I have no reason to think it won’t, and the defense is as good as last year, we will win more games. Period! The only thing I’m truly worried about is the secondary staying healthy. Even with that, we still win more games!

  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

Thanks Arnie… Wouldn’t want to hear the real from anyone else. Great notes, and thanks for keeping us posted.

i’m glad i could do it. i know we were all starving for this.

      an hour, at least.

      • blu3ny3llow

        Thnks

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Also note worthy…. Bryant McKinnie came into Ravens camp overweight, and was held back from practice… Bwahaha! Bullet dodged. Good job with the dinners, and In-N-Out, TT! How’s those free meal treatin’ ya, big boy?

  • arnie

Attention everyone i made boo boo. That should be “Royal caught EVERYTHING” not Floyd. Floyd made some spectacular catches as well. but i wrote that first, so i could be glad to see how wrong i was about him.

  • RussinSactown

I hope one of the college kids beats out CBJ

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Me too

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

Even though we’ve missed the playoffs the last 3 seasons.
We’ve had a combined record of 24-24 throughout that time period.

Not good but definitely not bad either.

We finished 7-9 last season and could of easily finished 10-6

With wins over the Browns, Ravens and Saints or Broncos.

The Chargers have upgraded. I’m not gonna make any predictions but I feel good about this team.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      exactly…. i feel the same

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i honestly had this same exact mindset on my drive to work… was wondering why people feel we are going to be sooo bad this year

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

I’m wondering myself…But will soon find out.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Because KC is going to surpass us this year (Pffft). The same team that went 2-14 last season. BUT, Andy Reid is in town, so that changes everything! The same coach that had the “dream team”, still picked 4th in the draft this year, and missed the playoffs AGAIN. Is that the sign of a “good coach”? He’s lost something, if you ask me. What’s odd, is that they talk about all the problems Oakland had last year in the media (which they did). Oakland shut out KC last year, and only had to score 15 points to win. That’s friggin’ awful! Not only did they win two out of sixteen games, but they got shut out by the worst ranked team in the NFL this year. Do you go from that, to contending with the Broncos in ONE year…. simply by adding Alex Smith & Eric Fisher? I know Romeo was bad, but that pro-bowl talent was there last year, and they couldn’t put up more than two wins? My apologies, if I’m not buying KC being contenders this year. It’s just media hype, because Reid is an East Coast guy.

  • C.Steele

Ernie you are quickly becoming my favorite writer on the Chargers Beat!!! Great nuggets of info in the article. Love the thought off Philip running the offense from under center…Like everyone who’s not close enough to attend the open practice session, I’m Blue & Yellow with envy. I wan’t to be able to witness the transformation myself. But, I’ll be making the trip from the ATL in October to witness the beat down were gonna put on Luck and the Colts. Monday night football baby!!! #GoBolts!!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

nice… this was Arnie that put those notes together though… with an ‘A’…. Arnie… why is your name so close to mine?! hahahaha

      • C.Steele

Wow! I see that now. Sorry about that Arnie! Great job on the notes! Great info!! Appreciate you both!! #GoBolts!

  • Rob Base

Thanks for all the info! Keep it coming.

I would like to see your impression over the next several days of:
    - Frank Reich was going to “fix” PR. Notwithstanding the change in scheme you addressed (slants/pace/etc.), can you see improvement in technique?
    - How are the hogs on the OL/DL handling the pace? Can they handle the aerobic pace? Will they be able to last 4 quarters?

    - ST – impressions of KR/PR candidates
    - DBs – can they handle Denver WRs?
    - DL/LBs – are they showing any preps for defending the read option (e.g., Redskins)?

I will see you young squirts at the practice tomorrow (Sat 7/27) in case anyone wants to say your thoughts, in person.

Practice – (7/27) They can all run faster than me. They are all at least forty years younger. They are all enthusiastic. They are not going to show any new schemes now or even in a pre season game. We can all hope that McCoy has the time (seasons) to build the Chargers back up to contenders. We will find out after the conclusion of the fourth regular season game against the C’boys.

Okay, how about day #2, huh, huh,?? More signs of greatness in the making? Awesome to hear that Starks isn’t just T.O. ing the number 1 left tackle spot. Want to see a fight of titans (and not the hillbilly kind) for every spot on both lines.

I saw Michael Hill run the ball here in Montgomery at the Raycom College football All Star Classic and he was awesome. I’m not a Chargers fan, but you guys got something special , and after preseason Michael Hill will be known throughout the NFL. (People laughed at me last year when I made a similar post about Russell Wilson.)
