Chargers Most Underrated/Overrated Players

They are doing this thing on NFL.com where they are selecting every team’s most underrated and most overrated player. Adam Rank selected his underrated choices ad Air Coryell and Chuck Muncie. Those guys definitely deserve a lot more attention and credit than they are given.

For the overrated player, the dude on the left (no clue what his name is, even after he said it) selected Antonio Gates. ALL TIME MOST OVERRATED? I know I have gone on about Gates being overrated before, but that was for last season, not of ALL-TIME!!!!

Then he goes on and says that there are more athletic and more fit tight ends in the league today. More fit and more athletic? That is an insult to the greatness of Antonio Gates.

Athletic? That dude is smoking something. Antonio Gates was a pretty good basketball player before becoming a stud football player.

Dude got’s to be joshing! I understand that the overrated player is going to have some sort of controversy no matter what, but it shouldn’t be Antonio Gates.

Gates is a beast of a TE. I will say his role in recent years has diminished with his heath issues, but come on most over-rated of all time????

      Love it!!!! That’s hilarious :0

Picking most overrated of all time is tough, but probably I would pick the most accurate kicker in regular season league history Nate Kaeding, highest conversion rate during the regular season but always choked in the playoffs and didn’t have the power to consistently get touchbacks on kickoffs

that one makes a ton of sense right there. all them kicks and he couldn’t make a clutch one to save his life

      • Nick in PB

Agreed… Antonio was the model for the new tight end!!! Just crazy that they are calling Gates overrated! Maybe his play has declined with age, but that doesn’t make him overrated. You have to look at an entire body of work to make that call and Gates’s body of work was tremendous. Kaeding actually fits the mold to a TEE!

    • Adam

      Perfect example

  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

Gates is more like underrated than anything. Double teams are a routine for Gates and he comes out on top almost every time. Sleep on Antonio Gates …. PLEASE! YOUR GOING TO END UP GETTING WORKED!

  • arnie

Leaf, Buster Davis, English, David Boston, Cason….? did i miss something.

    • Rob Base

      Agreed bro!

    • Alter Ego

David Boston…he broke my heart. Spot on.
Leaf…biggest bust in our history – he turned out to be nuts though, hard to throw stones at nuts…I think we get a pas on him – the entire NFL does.
English has this season to redeem himself (no injuries)…I am rooting for him.
Blame AJ for Cason and Davis…I do.

      • Adam

I’m REALLY rooting for Larry this year. Imagine if he has a monster year behind freeney. Mind blown

        • arnie

I agree. As long as he’s wearing bolts, I want him to do well and I hope he does. But let’s face it, all he has done is keep the doctor an trainers busy.

  • Adam

Saying Antonio Gates is overrated is like saying Leonardo Dicaprio is a bad actor…IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!!!!

    • Joel

I’d say the staff writers are A. just looking to get a rise out of chargers fans by calling gates overrated. B. ignorant of the chargers roster and only know 2-3 names and Gates is the easiest to pick on because he’s getting older and he’s famous.
either way they are just grasping at straws with their ignorant propaganda, water off a ducks back.

      • Adam

Hopefully all the corners and safeties in the league read that article and stop double and triple covering him. He could have his best year yet! And that’s saying something.

  • Alter Ego

Gates was undrafted. He was like finding a gold coin on the ground. That’s just a stupid suggestion.

  • BruisingChargers

Once..upon a time,I was also called “Over Rated”, at my job. Boy, did I show them they were wrong!

  • John Bauer

Would disagree with Coryyell not underated He had a bad footlall philosophy The fact he has no SB ring proves it ! ! !

  • miketuck

Somebody had their head where the sun don’t shine! Gates was brilliant as a catching TE. Then Turner and injuries came into play. I honestly think Gates will feel 3 years younger this year and will have one of his finest years. The writers in the media and on line are so full of themselves they never take into consideration that Schotienheimer had them on top and on the verge until Spanos allowed Smith to pull the rug beneath the team and put Ego in instead of the teams needs. This teams resilliancy while the two bozos completey dismantled the quality at LB and Oline for people that were in Smiths christmas catalog. Like English and Mouton, while walk ons were better than the picks. This team fought without the help of leadership to stay at least above the waterline. McCoy knows it, Telesco Knows it, some of the greatest coaches turned broadcaster knew it but you never badmouth a fellow manager. So fine, count the Chargers out, as a has been team, more power to the players. The west won’t know what hit them.
