Chargers Have One Of Worst Ranked Backup Quarterbacks

NFL.com is ranking the backup quarterback position for all the teams in the league and the San Diego Chargers have one of the worst in the league. Remember when we had Billy Volek?

The only player that has some experience ranked lower than our Clipboard is Green Bay Packers Graham Harrell.

If Philip Rivers ever has to leave a game for a potty break or anything, we pretty much are screwed. Clipboard Charlie is good at holding the clipboard and he probably would be a good shampoo model.

Whitehurst played some in the preseason last year and really didn’t impress. He is fighting for a job on the  roster. We could save some room on the salary cap if we let him go and one of the rookie quarterbacks could give a little push for a roster spot.

We have no insurance for Philip Rivers right now. He is the single most important player for our success. If he goes down, we will be looking at drafting Jadeveon Clowney or Teddy Bridgewater next year. Luckily, Philip is one of the most durable players in the game.

This is not new information. Didn’t we get some rookie?

    • PakMaN

Ya I think we got some tebow-ish guy.

    • Gunnar Martin

I think she’s talking about Brad Sorensen, the guy we drafted in the seventh round. He’s not too bad.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I know he isn’t PR… but, a lot of what I have read compares to Rivers’ style of play. Not sure if I am reading to deep into that, but at least there wouldn’t be to much of a scheme change.

        • Gunnar Martin

That’s exactly what I was thinking too. Big but not mobile, weird throwing motion, football brains- it all seems to add up. He could end up being a very solid backup behind Philip.

    I miss Billy Volek.

    • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

      Me too!

  • Gunnar Martin

    CLIPBOARD JESUS!!!!

    You suck.

  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

We wouldn’t miss Billy at all. We have two talented rookies in Mike Hermann and Brad Sorensen. I’m pulling for Mike Hermann because he is like a Tebow character but with a pocket passer accurate arm.

  • RussinSactown

Another reason I would kick the tires on JeMarcus Russell. If Rivers went down I would be more apt to trust someone who knows he’s playing for his life than someone who has just been happy to hold the clipboard.

    • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

      I’m not mad at that.

  • Blue&gold_blood

Good thing the only way Rivers will ever not a play a game it’s if he has to be carted off . As long as he can stand , he is playing and giving it all he has .
That’s one of the reasons why Rivers is one of the best.

  • arnie

CBJ was a bad QB, under norv. I am curious what will come out in pre-season under McCoy (an the Wiz).
PR declined under norv and most of us are confident he will be great under McCoy. why not CBJ?

    • arnie

one more thing. consider the source of the ranking. isn’t this the same nfl.com that doesn’t expect the Chargers to do anything in 2013?

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Sometimes, I wonder if we were separated at birth.

        • Nick in PB

Another good post Arnie!!! I think you hit it right on! I don’t think that Whitehurst is as bad as everyone thinks. I remember there was a preseason game last year where the Chargers (Norv) was afraid to play Philip for fear of losing him to injury! They played Whitehurst because he is at least, a tad more mobile. I wouldn’t like him for the long haul, but for spot duty, I think he’s OK. Plus, like we all stated, Rivers is Iron Man!

          • arnie

LMAO! I remember that game Nick! CBJ was running for his life, the entire game! And still we were to believe everything would be fine, by “staying the course”. LMAO good times…

          • Nick in PB

hahaha… Norv, he had some wonderful insight didn’t he! NOT! What a tool!!!

        • arnie

LOL! Hey we probably bleed blue an gold.

  • Alter Ego

What the hell?…They got it all wrong – he is the next Super Bowl clip board carrier. In my book that is awesome!

  • Rob Base

I hope one of the new rookies take Clipborad Jesus place. Stupid to get rid of Volek.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

And he’s still better than any of the Raiders QB’s.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Hahahhaa. Pete you love it!

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

        Since I was fucking 6!

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’m tired.. bedtime. Prayers & Blessins. Nite E-Pad.. Love you, mang = )

  • joerockt

Rivers hasn’t missed a start and is coming off last season with 49 sacks and no injuries. Dude is iron man, we’re good.

  • Bill Nichols

Billy would be a huge upgrade to freaking charlie brown hair!! I hated that move to let Volek go, hell he came in and contributed when we needed him. But, yes, Whitehead (not the new whitehead of course, the one that needs popping) will be gone this year, I guarantee it. Big deal if he knows the plays, we could always run the wild cat, and Ronnie could hand off to the “real” whitehead. Gezz

  • C.Steele

This is the least of my worries with the team! First, Rivers is an Iron Man of the Favre fashion. Second, Between McCoy and Wisenhunt they will be able to make any quarterback on the roster serviceable enough to win games (See Denver & Tebow). Lastly, I our offensive line will be light years better than last years which will improve our running game greatly (Taking pressure of the QB) + Our Receiving corp will be much improved making the QB’s job easier.Side note I’m pulling forHermann to make the squad, if that means loosing Clip Board Jesus i’m cool with that, or keeping 3 this year. I don’t really like the kid we drafted in the seventh round (Sorensen) GoBolts!!

    • Nick in PB

Good post C.Steele! Agreed on your points!

      • C.Steele

        Thanks Nick!

    • arnie

Well you may get your wish. Consider what happened in Seattle? Flynn was brought in to be the franchise QB, then Russell Wilson stepped in and Flynn is a raider.

  • miketuck

Ernie; That he may be, but it was Smith who let Jared Lee ( One of the best QB pickups they had made since Rivers) go, and decided that 2 was enough. The kid out of Southern Utah better be worth his salt and I’m rooting for him to make the team. He’d probably make a better back-up than Whitehurst, and if Rivers goes down the QB is the key component to winning. I honestly think that they’ll be watching the waiver wire for a back-up that can come in and run the offense.

  • miketuck

One more thing’ and that is a back-up should get alot of playing time during games so he’s ready to play if needed. Even in blowout situations Turner refused to sit Rivers and let his backup play. That makes no since at all.
