Eric Weddle Listed as Top Defensive Back in AFC West by ESPN

Bill Williamson of ESPN has been ranking players at all the different positions in the AFC West. Corey Liuget was listed as the top defensive lineman in the division by them and now Eric Weddle has been listed as the top defensive back in the division. That shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone except for the players that vote on the NFL Top 100 or the players that vote for the Pro Bowl. Eric Weddle gets no respect around the league and it is ridiculous.

He is the best defensive back in the league. For some reason he doesn’t get voted into the Pro Bowl. That  just drives him even more. This season he will be balling even harder and will look to prove his status around the league as the best defensive back.

In our starting secondary, he will be the only returning piece from last season. Everything around him has been blown up and it will be up to him to make the transition smooth. He will have to get Shareece Wright, Derek Cox and Brandon Taylor all on the right page.

Weddle is always around the football and quarterbacks around the league try to avoid throwing in his direction. If the other guys in the secondary can step their games up, we will have a sick defense that will force turnovers.

Corey Liuget and Eric Weddle will be leading this defense in the future and we should have a few more playmakers stepping it up this season. I look forward to seeing this defense put in work.

The thing I like most about Weddle is that, while he is definitely underrated, he doesn’t get angry and mouth off about it in the media. He just quietly goes about being the best safety in the League.

I remember some people calling Weddle a reach when he was drafted. Seems like he’s definitely gone out and proven them wrong. Love having this guy on our defense.

The key to Weddle success, the front seven and the SS have to step up and keep him out of “run support” duties. The numbers show, he leads the team in tackles almost every season. Weddle is just as great a ball hawk as reed was, and just a capable of making plays like troy. The reason we don’t see it consistently, both ravens and steelers D-fenses do their jobs so reed an palomalu can do theirs. Weddle has been picking up the slack for the Chargers defense. The only reason we saw Weddle make plays, is the D was better last season.

Arnie, once again a great post. So true about his ball hawking capabilities. He really hasn’t been able to do what a Free Safety is suppose to do when everything is going well. Seriously good point!

      • arnie

Nick thanks, but it’s all about context. Weddle doesn’t get the recognition, because he doesn’t hit the highlight real every week. That because he’s gettin’ dirty in the trenches, cleaning up other peoples messes.

  • RussinSactown

I think Weddle has just the right edge to him. There isn’t a picture of him that doesn’t just scream, “Let’s talk about what you did to my kid sister.”

I always see Rivers and Weddle in the same sort of light. Obviously, Weddle hasn’t struggled like Rivers has recently. But, neither of them get the respect they deserve in the media. Mark my words, if they were to hit the open market, every team would be climbing over each other to get them in free agency. I hope they both light up the league this season!

      oh yeah!!!!

      • Peter Thompson

        Comment of the week!!!!

        • 619chargers4life

          got that right!!

    • Stefanie Smith

That is the idea, Pete. They think we would be stupid enough to dump them–at least they figured it is a probability when AJ was around….talk them down, and they come cheap.

    • arnie

Oh this is why it burns me up Pete to hear the “trade Rivers Talk”. We would be the laughing stock of the entire league. letting one franchise QB go, that wins a Superbowl with another team was bad enough. Can you imagine if the Chargers became the only team to do it Twice?

      • Peter Thompson

TT & McCoy aren’t doing that. Gloves on, baby.. Philip’s gloves. Lol. At least with the gloves on, PR17 won’t do that gross licking thing that Brees does.. Yuk.

        • arnie

Oh i know they aren’t. they’re smart. i was just saying for every time i heard somebody, on the radio calling in saying rivers should be traded, irritates me to death. Just like, if the Chargers had not paid Weddle, would have been Defensive suicide.

          • Peter Thompson

I agree… the backlash would be ridiculous… especially the first time Philip took his new team to the playoffs.

  • 619chargers4life

don’t forget Butler !!! we will being seeing him for yrs to come as well. I love how our D is taking shape. Beast Mode.

    • arnie

Telesco is already making cap space to get him resigned, next season.

  • Cgoodness13

Best DB? He’s up their, But he’s definitely the best safety in the league. Probably the most consistent DB in the league also.

  • tubbs45

    Liuget / Thomas / Reyes

Man that sounds good… Sounds like QBs for dinner. If the pass does somehow make it out, Weddle will pick off the Ducks! Still got figure out SS…

  • Adam

I’ve been saying that I need to get a Weddle jersey for years. I feel like this is the year I finally throw down the guac for it.

    • Peter Thompson

Just got mine last month. GET IT, ADAM!!!!

      • Adam

#32 is next on my list!

        • Peter Thompson

Mine’s the old style, but my wife has a hook-up at work where I only pay $50 per Jersey. I have to see if the new ones are available for that price. The connect owns his own store, and is a sports gear retailer, so pretty sure I can.. even if I have to wait a bit.

  • Alter Ego

Weddle is a bad ass. The exciting thing is I think he helps everyone around him to reach their bad ass potential.
