ESPN ranked San Diego Chargers DE Corey Liuget as the best defensive lineman in the division. Looking over the list of other defensive linemen in the division, there really is no competition.

He is one of the best in the league, but doesn’t have the recognition around the league just yet. He is often compared with JJ Watt and I expect him to get recognized across the league very soon.

Kendall Reyes was also listed at number 4 in the top linemen list of the AFC West.

The Chargers have a ton of potential on the Chargers defensive front. They are young playmakers on a 3-4 defensive front. Liuget is the leader of the young squad and will be a key figure for the defense. He is going to get more and more attention from the opposing teams and he will still have to find ways to make plays. His teammates, Kendall Reyes, Dwight Freeney and Cam Thomas, will have to take the stress off of his shoulders and make some plays happen also.

I’m liking our defensive line and starting LB crew for sure

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i definitely am excited for those guys… scared about the depth though

      • Nick in PB

        Praying for good health!!!!

  • Cgoodness13

Bout time he got some recognition. And is Richard semore still on the raiders?

    • JoseSD

No, I think the raiders lost 3 of their starting 4 linemen

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      he is a free agent

  • Pels04

You guys hear that Edwin Baker raced Steve Williams in the 40 after practice last week and smoked him? Steve ran a 4.25 40 at the combine. Interesting

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

that was surprising. i heard that too! Baker must be a fast dude

      • tubbs45

Baker is a straight up speedster… he just needs daylight to break and he’s gone…

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

That’s awesome! I’m really hoping that Edwin Baker can step up in camp & make the squad. I’m still not sure if he got an honest shot to succeed with Norv, and last year’s line.

      • Nick in PB

So true. I like this kid and I like Michael Hill too. About Liuget, with Freeney lined up next to him, it’s going to be so much fun to watch. The offense is going to have to overload to that side and then here comes Reyes, on the other side. Tons of fun here!!!

    • arnie

In the underwear olympics. players are faster than they appear….

  • Alter Ego

Louie Kelcher, Big Hands Johnson, Leslie O’Neal and now Corey Liuget & Kendall Reyes – thank you Football Gods.

Let’s not forget about Ernie Ladd and Earl Faison. True story- I was at game in Balboa Stadium and I believe it was Joe Namath’s rookie year. Ernie Ladd just blew through the right side of Jets o-line. Namath was turned to his left and never saw the 6’9″ & 335 pounds of muscle barrelling in behind him. (Back then players of Ladd’s size and athleticism were nonexistent.) So here’s Ladd about to crush Namath but he just grabbed Joe by the inside of the right shoulder pads with one hand, and in one motion lifted him up still using just his right hand and swung Namath in a circle. By this time Namath is completely in Ladd’s control and looks like he needs some new pants. While swinging him Ladd looks like he’s going to throw Namath about 20 yards. Namath’s body was completely horizontal as the centrifugal force is impossible to resist. Just when everyone in the stadium thinks Namath is about to be destroyed, Ernie keeps swinging Namath but lowers his body and brushes Namath’s butt on the grass and then finishes his swing by raising Namath and standing him back on his feet! TRUTH!!! Every bit of it. Even the players on the field just stopped and watched. They probably thought Ernie was going to kill him, but Ernie wasn’t on steroids and half crazy. He was just a natural giant.

We need to pair Liuget and Reyes with monster NT. I like Thomas a lot, but we need to figure out the NT, it is a key to 3-4 defensive success.

    • tubbs45

      body slam!!!

      • tubbs45

        Flying Cam….

    • arnie

Eh. i know who the NT is on this team. and i pretty sure Coach McCoy knows it as well.

      • tubbs45

Aubrayo Franklin was our starter last year, Cam was average at best. Garay had little playing time compared to the other. While I’m glad you know who the NT is on the team McCoy/Pagano has been rotating 2 other for 1st team snaps, indicating to me he may not be that sure who his start will be come game time…

        • arnie

Or, they need the new guys to get some snaps.
Cam is the front runner, but to call him average with almost non-existant snaps is reaching a bit. When both Franklin an Garay went down, Cam stepped in and the other two were not missed.

          • Nick in PB

            Cam is ready!

          • arnie

i know this. but opinions vary.

          • Dawgsdown

So what would you call a player with limited snaps? that isn’t a reach, its reality. If he had beaten out Franklin he would have started. Garay was only in 6 games and was largely inactive.

          • arnie

I would call it being on aj and norvs team. Cam was going into his “Second” season when franklin was acquired. When garay went down, you would think Cam would get the call. not on aj’s team. Franklin was brought in to start. period. it wasn’t a matter of Cam beating out Franklin. Franklin was a vet with 10 years of experience at the position. Context…..
Like i siad before, Cam has proven he can get the job done. Consider this, the fact that Cam had a limited amount of snaps as a second year player and the Defense didn’t miss a beat with garay and franklin out, is in his favor. So much so, they released garay, and chose not to pursue franklin. Simply put, Cam produced just as much, with less time on the field.

          • arnie

One more thing. Cam tore his achilles and missed his rookie season. So his second season was actually his first.

          • tubbs45

While I think Cam can get the job done, he still needs to have rotational backup at the very least. We let Franklin go because of salary cap issues not because TT thought Cam was so much better. Hell I hope he goes out there and tears shit up… I am pulling for him, but I’m also not all-in on anyone who hasn’t carried the load for the full season.

  • Will

Well considering the broncos run a 4-3 that’s means Shaun Phillips is a DE which makes him a d lineman even though he’s still a pass rusher. If any of u think Corey is better than Shaun then u guys really know nothing about football.

    • RussinSactown

So ESPN knows nothing about football. OK. They are looking at his youth and his number, just like that looked at Phillips’ numbers. The Chargers didn’t let him walk because we was tearing it up last year. I think Shaun has gas in the tank but he’s not even the best on his new team.

    • tubbs45

He is a Linebacker spanky… “The Broncos have placed Phillips at strongside linebacker — as Miller’s backup” Get your facts straight before you pipe up jackass…

      • Adam

Notice how he disappeared. Retreated back to his troll cave

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Will, why do you always claim that “u guys really know nothing about football?”

      please enlighten us

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Shaun Phillips is better than Corey? You’re out of your damn mind. One is a young player on the verge of being a superstar, and the other is a middling linebacker near the end of his career.

It’s ironic that you accuse us of knowing nothing about football…

    • FitzWilly

I can’t stress this enough Folks

      • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

I’m fairly sure he’s just Hacksaw, and believes every word he types. Hahaha

      • arnie

we’re not. I watched the Lord of the Rings movies. There are some Elven an Dwarf Charger fans around here somewhere.

      • Adam

        Ha! Nice.

      • Nick in PB

No sh*t! Keep that one handy Fitzy!

        • FitzWilly

Can do, Will do Nick :)

    • blu3ny3llow

      Dahm creeper …..

  • arnie

This young man is going to anchor that defense. They double teamed him, late in the season just as he started to get it going. garay and martin didn’t really take advantage of it.

    • Nick in PB

But Reyes will! Am I right Arnie? Good call about Martin and Garay!

      • arnie

most definately. Reyes got an opportunity and blew up. But think, Reyes made it happen, because they were double teaming Liuget on the other side. It’s a domino effect. the protection will always rotate to the highest threat. the jets didn’t see Reyes as one and he made them pay for it, by beating his man in one-on-one. Unlike the afore mentioned former players.

  • Adam

To liuget to quit! I love this kid. Can’t double team both freeney and Corey.
