Willis McGahee Interested In Joining the Chargers

Former Denver Broncos RB Willis McGahee is looking for a new spot to take his skills. He isn’t ready to hang up the cleats and he has a few places that he would be interested in joining.

“I will keep playing. I don’t feel like I have to go out there and say what I have left. I know what I can do. I’m not worried about it. Once I get the opportunity, it will be all good,” McGahee told Josina Anderson of ESPN. “There are a lot of places I wouldn’t mind playing. You got Miami, Dallas, Green Bay, San Diego, Oakland. That’s not necessarily my order of preference, though. All of those teams I mentioned I would go to with no problems.”

Should the San Diego Chargers be interested in Willis McGahee? The Chargers have Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown as their top backs. If Ryan were to go down with an injury, there is no real back that can take a ton of the carries. Brown and Woodhead are mostly considered 3rd down backs.

McGahee could be used as the main back if Mathews were to go down. He could also give Ryan a little bit of a push for the starting job. Ryan really hasn’t had much competition for the starting job and McGahee could be someone to compete.

Mike McCoy should be very familiar with McGahee. McGahee helped lead the Denver Broncos to the playoffs the last couple of seasons. He was productive as the starting back and helped lead the Broncos to the playoffs the last couple of seasons.

I am sure McGahee wouldn’t mind hooking up with McCoy again either. McGahee was coming off of the bench for Baltimore before McCoy got a hold of him. McCoy used him as the starter in Denver and resurrected his career.

Could McCoy and McGahee meet up again in San Diego?

If Willis has enough gas in the tank then he’d be a great pickup. Ryan needs a push.

With Taylor back and gilchrist flopping positions, why not if we can afford it?! And if we can sign a DT for depth also thy would be nice

I think the concept of bringing in McGahee as an insurance policy for Mathews is BRILLIANT!! Its a win-win no matter how you look at it. Cut Ronnie Brown to make room. Tom Telesco can pull it off…wow!!

absolutely agree. makes a ton of sense.

Huh…Hell Yeah! Sorry Ronnie Brown – Willis has like 10 TDs and 2400 yards the last two years. We’re gonna need your playbook.

He has to make the team so we can use that name. He’d be my new favorite running back.

This isn’t a stable for old donkeys. But in this case I say YES !

  • C.Steele

Hmmm, my initial inclination was yes. But, then I thought, he is coming off injury do we need an older running coming off a knee injury backing up our injury prone primary back. I don’t know that seems like a lot of risk to me. So, I guess in the end what it comes down to is the $$$$. How much more would we have to pay him then Ronni Brown?! If it’s comparable, I say go for it. A backfield of Matthews, Woodhead & Mcghee sounds good to me….. LOL! I think i just talked myself into while typing!! Caveat on the $$$$ #GoBolts!!

      Haha

  • geapetto, florentini

If this move were to go down and the $$$ was right, I would say we are in serious contention for a wildcard spot in the afc! Brown is basically here to block for 17 on 3rd down. The wild cat is old news!!! #BoltUpHoesDown

  • Mike DeWitt

No Thanks, McGahee is a “Me” 1st player, always has been. I’ll Pass.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Is he really? Didn’t know that about him

  • joerockt

This would be a good addition to cover for Matthews when he goes down. Nobody capable to back him up as we saw last year. We need a running game otherwise Rivers gets pummeled again.

  • Sergio Quintero

We all know Mathews is going to miss a game in the season, nobody behind him can be trusted to be a 20 carry back, until the chargers sign a veteran I’m fully convinced Michael Hill is making this team.

If McGahee takes a cost reasonable contract why not, he’s a proven 20-25 carry back that will be fully motivated against the team to beat in the division.
