Antonio Gates: The Most Overrated San Diego Chargers Player?

Dec 2, 2012; San Diego, CA, USA; San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (85) slips after making a first down catch during the third quarter while defended by Cincinnati Bengals outside linebacker Vontaze Burfict (55) and cornerback Adam Jones (24) at Qualcomm Stadium. Pete Prisco brought the noise on his post about most overrated and underrated players for each team in the NFL. Guess who he ranked as the most overrated Charger?

ANTONIO GATES.

Shots fired. Surprised he didn’t go with Philip Rivers. That would seem to be the popular vote for that title as the most overrated Charger. I would understand it too.

But Prisco voted for Antonio Gates. Sadly, I understand this one as well. Did you see that he was voted in the Top 100 players in the NFL?

I love Antonio Gates. I love what he has done and what he has been for this team, but he has not had the same production that he has had in the past.

Maybe he has lost a step? Maybe the offensive line and Philip Rivers’ issues have caused him to struggle even more? Who knows.. I just know that he has not been his dominant self and that he has dropped a few balls that I usually see him bring in.

Can he be dominant? It comes and goes. He has brilliant games here and there, but the consistency is not there anymore.

He is still regarded as one of the top tight ends in the league and Tony Gonzalez shows that you can still play that position at a high level with grey hairs. Can Antonio step back to that elite level and be the dominant force that we know?

Yes. He is going to have a nice year in 2013. I can’t wait to see him dominate Eric Berry again this year, either.. lmao!

  • Will

Philip led the league in yds before the line went to shit. Gates is a top 5 TE and the second best TE of all time. And now u waste ur time making an article about them being OVERRATED?? And u call urself a fan….

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      I love you Will

      • http://boltbeat.com/ ChargerGirl Cindi

Shame on you Ernie. Now go drink some of the Chargers kool-aid and write something happy. Oh wait, maybe that’s what I should do? ha ha

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I know!!!! First you said we should cut him when he has still got 2 years on his contract… now this? Hahahaha… not feeling Gatsey anymore, huh? Let’s hope he changes your mind… and not mine ; )

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

You must have missed the part where I said I love Gates… BUT, tell me what he has done the last two seasons… and don’t list the reasons why the numbers were down

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I was just teasing you.. lol.. . He has been a little flat lately, I admit. Although, that 3 TD Berry burn was pretty awesome to watch.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            i did love that burn

Will kinda really hates me… Pretty sure he is the one that made fake facebook Bolt Beat accounts… Just sharing my love with him.

          • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

It’s all in fun. I just like to call someone out that I disagree with. I love the Chargers but I won’t coddle them.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Wow. Crazy. Thanks for sharing ; )

    • http://boltbeat.com/ ChargerGirl Cindi

      You tell it Will!

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

Sometimes you just don’t like hearing the truth. Fan or no fan the stats say he has lost a step. That doesn’t mean he’s not good but he has lost a step since his injury. Maybe he’ll recover this year. We’ll see.

    • Alter Ego

Its gonna be the Gates of Heaven or the Gates of Hell – I’m good either way. I love that dude.

      • NativeSanDiegan

As do I. Loved him since he was a UFA power forward out of Kent State (he didn’t even play college football)

    • Stefanie Smith

Will: If you are talking about Ernie–then type to the hand. Ernie is reporting and getting the dialogue going. We don’t need a fanboy slanting the news and the stories out there. So seriously, Ernie is doing a great job. This is not a Chargers’ fan club site. This is to get the news on the Chargers from all over the news, discuss what other sports folks are saying about the Chargers’ etc and argue if it has any merit. But Ernie does a great job here as do the other staff.

Yes, we are all fans here, but we can still take a critical look at all angles of the Chargers.

      • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

        Well said Smith.

      • MC Boltman

        Great comment!

        Nice, Stefanie.

  • http://boltbeat.com/ ChargerGirl Cindi

What? The man had a major injury that did not allow him to run without excruciating pain – and the only fix was rest. He will be back in peak form this year and with Philip wearing the gloves it’s going to be game on! I cannot wait! #IBelieve

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Me either… LOVE me some Gates! Preach on Cindi!

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

      Let’s hope so.

    • Stefanie Smith

Maybe Coach McCoy is ordering up his Gorilla wax or whatever caused the controversy last year.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

can we get some of that deer antler spray?

        • Stefanie Smith

Yes, we need a ton of that stuff.

        • Stefanie Smith

Did you see Rich Eisen at the Combine when he made his run and he whipped out the deer antlers with some spray coming out of the antlers? Omg, it was hilarious.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I didn’t see that, but that is friggin’ hilarious!!!! Hahahaha!

  • Cgoodness13

He was double teamed every play, he not overrated.

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

He has always been double teamed and still made plays.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

exactly… he used to still make plays with the double teams

  • JoseSD

Whoever this Pete Prisco Guy is needs to watch the games against the Chiefs where Gates made “All-Pro” safety Eric Berry his bitch. Despite his feet issues he was making cuts and getting first downs consistently and torched him for 3 TDs. He didn’t play up to his standards but no one did with that Swiss cheese o line, but then again you have to be highly rated by the main stream media to be considered overrated and Gates and Philip are probably the only options he had to choose from

Gates will be back to form with the new offense and OLine. quick throw over the middle to…

      Left hand is good

      • tubbs45

        Right hand is better!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i remember this one.. dude thought it was flag football and pulled his towel and never made a tackle

      • tubbs45

yep, love the heisman pose too!

  • tubbs45

    My personal favorite gates bulldozing

  • Stefanie Smith

I think he will be fine. There was too much turmoil on the Chargers with AJ and Norv. This “losing” mentality was killing them–causing problems in the locker room. I believe that Coach McCoy can bring these guys around. A new perspective and new enthusiasm. They were burned out and beaten down with AJ and Norv. AJ treated them like crap and Norv was weak,

Antonio is not overrated. I am sick of these news folks trying to get Rivers and Antonio canned. Why don’t they look at Arizona —is Larry Fitzgerald overrated? Hmmm, What has he done lately? Is CJ2K overrated? The point is they are all on teams with problems which affect the other players’ (theirs) performance.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Great points Stefanie! You nailed it with this comment… comment of the week material actually!

    • NativeSanDiegan

      I totally agree with you.

Pete Prisco is one of the two or three worst writers in all of sports. He takes conventional, national sports media wisdom and flips it on its head just for the sake of flipping it. There’s almost never any actual analysis of the subject at hand. I don’t take anything he says as legit, much less gospel.

That said, sure Gates has lost a step from his prime, but I still think he’s a top 5-10 TE. He just needs to be put in a better position to make plays as the #3 passing option like Gonzales in ATL. Losing a step doesn’t mean overrated. Anyone who thinks otherwise should check out what Gates did to Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry.

  • Rob Base

I hope Gates has a good season dude works hard. Injured or not he still plays to the best of his ability. I say he gets 983 yds and 10 TD’s. I put this out to the universe and so it is!

  • jad555

Overrated, overrated, overrated. Last season, our intrepid local media lauded Gates for hustling to make a key fumble recovery. The replay showed that the fumble was caused by a pathetically inept missed block by Gates, but nobody wanted to notice that. Let’s not even mention all the dropped passes, or glacial speed.

  • jamfed

Gates has been a true #1 receiver in San Diego for a long time now. He’s never been known as a good blocker, nor did he block in college. But he’s Rivers GO TO GUY and Gates has proven to be a hall of famer.

    • NativeSanDiegan

Block in college? You must have meant “block out” as the Power Forward at Kent State. And YES, he could block out in college. (He didn’t play football in college.) That’s why the Good Guys before Norv signed him as a UFA. That’s his bread and butter; block out the defender and instantly create space if the pass is on time and accurate. He had to start from scratch as an undrafted basketball player in the NFL. It seemed like our coaches were extra hard on him, but Gates hung in there and toughed it out. He lost his speed and sharpness on his cuts on an illegal hit that ripped his plantar fascia. But he can still block out and create space (separation) with his big body. Then he used to fake that and run up the seam in a zone for a good long gain.

  • Nick in PB

I think it’s hard to overrate a guy because of his age. He’s not the same player he was in his prime, but who is! Gates is and will always be one of my all time favorite Chargers! I think it’s unfair to deem him overrated.
