Chargers Disappointments From Last Year

Just to get a little of the stink off of my chest from last season, I had to share a few of the players that I lost my mind with last season. The players that had me pulling out my hair and wondering why they kept getting playing time. Here is a short list of guys that DROVE ME NUTS!!!!

Jared Gaither. This guy made me lose my mind before we even got to the start of the season. In the first few days of OTAs, he was already going down with a WHOLE BODY CRAMP and then he had back issues and menstrual cramp issues. His whole demeanor drove me crazy and the fact that we didn’t have a capable replacement made things even worse. The most frustrating player of the year.

Philip Rivers. He was already coming off of a bad year and we all were hoping that it was just a fluke. Then he couldn’t get through pre-season games without throwing interceptions. The offensive line was so bad in preseason that we had to sit him out a game and it really didn’t help his production. Interception after interception started creeping doubts in our head on if he was that elite player we once knew.

Ryan Mathews. First he rolled his car in training camp late at night and then he injured his collar-bone in the first preseason game. He comes back to start against the Atlanta Falcons and he has a really nice looking drive, then the fumblitis struck all over again. Then he injures the other collar-bone. Frustrating? A ton a bit.

I am sure there are a ton more players that I was pissed with, but those are the first few that came to mind.

Don’t forget Norv with his stupid HB draw plays on 3rd and long that got the chargers no where.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      well.. was thinking players..

      • Stefanie Smith

I’ll never forget Phillip Rivers yelling at Norv to kick a field goal and Norv pretending not to even hear him.

    • David

I called that play out everytime

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

We all did, David… we all did.
My eight year old nephew got pretty good at it too…. which is ludicrous!!!!

    • joerockt

      OFFENSIVE GENUS.

    • JoseSD

I was at the Ravens game when,he called that stupid draw play on 4th down and Ray Lewis flattened Sproles to end the game. I think my exact words when I saw it was “goddammit Norv!!!”

  • JoseSD

    Cason, Bigby, Meachem, Tyrone Green

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

how did i forget Meachem! SIGH

      • Stefanie Smith

        Meachem is a big one.

    • joerockt

Green didn’t disappoint me because I already knew he was going to suck balls based on performance from the year before subbing for Dielman.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Hahahaha! That made me laugh really hard.. so true!

      • Cgoodness13

        You men suck Norvs neck?

        • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Glad Norf didn’t do anything worthy of PaKMaN noticing…. we may have seen the first hand neck job….j/k…I’d be traumatized….

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

We call that one the “gobble job”.

        • joerockt

That’s a lot of sack to suck.

  • Cgoodness13

I was hoping CBS or Fox Sports would had the decency to censor norv discusting Scrotum neck

    • Marcus Amure

Lmao he’s even holding it up in the picture lolol

Nothing will piss me off more than AJ letting VJ go and signing two useless players for the same amount he could have signed VJ 2 years earlier.

Then maybe, just maybe we could have had a decent Oline. And we would have made the playoffs in 2011. This site has been stressing me out with all the talks of the last two seasons.. sigh.

    • Blue&gold_blood

Yup, and what also pissed me off. It was when he let sproles and then Tolbert go….. !!!!!

      • PakMaN

I can write a book on how many things that piece of shit did wrong.

      • Cgoodness13

Well Tolbert was a fullback pushed into halfback, remember that play he run up the middle for 3 yards, ran back to the line, tried hittin the edge and ended up getting tackled for a loss and fumbling?

      • NativeSanDiegan

Especially Sproles. Hard working Football PLAYER. Kept improving his game day after day, year after year against the odds and using naysayers as motivation.

    • Stefanie Smith

You said it perfectly, PakMan. Yeah, he could have signed VJ- for what he paid these so-called “replacements”.

      • NativeSanDiegan

His stupid ego. Can’t’ “give in” to what a player wants/deserves. Over here I just saw re-signing VJ as a non-factor and kept expecting the announcement any day. Then I hear that he signed with Tampa (I think). Just couldn’t believe it! STUBBORN IDIOT

    • joerockt

I remember how excited people were last year when AJ brought in Meachem and Royal. I thought, these guys are 2nd/3rd receivers for a reason, will they be able to step up? And we know the answer to that one.

      F AJ that monster douche.

    • Alter Ego

2011 is what nightmares are made of. It was a horror show – aaauggh. I had to watch golf to calm down.

      • PakMaN

The lowest point of any charger fan in recent memory. Halloween 2011 in KC.

I should find those kids who I screamed at following the fumble and apologize.

        • Alter Ego

          That’s funny…wait…heck – I got a lot of apologizing to do.

      • NativeSanDiegan

“Fortunately” they only broadcast the nationwide mandatory broadcasts over here (Hi) last year, so for the most part I was spared the nightmares. The couple of games they did show I was on my feet screaming “WHAT! or “NOOOO!” with my 16 yr old son joining in and throwing cushions at the couch. My 11 yr old daughter kept telling us to quiet down. A great bonding, family affair. (Especially that 4th and 29!!!!!!!!) AAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I just want to throw a shout out to female athletes all over the world, because they play with menstrual cramp issues all of the time. Gaither was suffering from one thing, and one thing only… Terminal Doosh Disorder.

    • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

As soon as that money runs out, Gaither will be on welfare. Then we’ll all have to support that SOB.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

You could buy roughly 40,000 Charger jersies, just with the dead money alone = /

    • tubbs45

      hahahaha. such a lazy BIOTCH….

  • tubbs45

Stone Hands… Damnit that game still pisses me off… I had so much hope for the dude… He made Rivers even worse when he was out there…

  • tubbs45

Almost forgot the Vincent Brown Leg break… Damn he was looking sooooooo good in the preseason

    • arnie

think about it, if he had played, norv an aj might still be here. lucky break for the fans.

  • 619chargers4life

    its all his fualt…

  • Stefanie Smith

Matthews was disappointing, but at least he made the effort to get back on the field asap. It probably was too early. I mean, Brown broke his leg and was out for the entire season. Maybe Matthews will be better now, seeing that he has had more time to heal his second broken clavicle.

I swear the PEDs are turning their bones and internal organs into papier mache.

  • joerockt

I have zero expectations for Mathews this year. Just hoping for the best. Problem is if he doesn’t perform or he gets injured again, we really have no one threatening to carry the load. This will leave Rivers vulnerable again to INT’s as D’s will simply focus on pass coverage.

    • Nick in PB

I have a little hope that he can do much better with less predictable play-calling and a little better blocking up front. Hopefully, this will be the year he puts fumbling behind him and average a little better than 4 YPC.

    • arnie

i believe that’s why john Phillips and Danny Woodhead were brought in. the can both protect, and Phillips can play fullback. with those two on the field you have players that can catch an block

      • joerockt

Right, because Woodhead is a proven every down back with over 1000 yards in multiple seasons. Should be perfect when Mathews goes down. Phillips: “Who?”

That’s great that we have players to can block and catch, but its not exactly the primary purpose of a running back. So, pray Mathews doesn’t get injured or gets a bout of fumbleitus and just roll your eyes when he does.

        • arnie

Yeah, you need to brush up on your Charger players i see. Anyways Woodhead has proven, he is more durable and more productive, with less touches on the ball, than mathews. The reason he has not run for a 1,000 yards isn’t because he’s not an “every down” back. He played in a system the featured passing TE. Context. Please understand, context.

But let’s look at an “every down” back. A back that can catch on passing downs or, block. And carry the rock every time he asked. Woodhead has gotten yards and made plays every time he’s asked to run. What else? oh yeah he stays healthy.
the point being to your original comment, having Woodhead and John Phillips, will ease PR’s venerability to the INT’s. you can’t run or throw the ball if you can’t block. which was the chief reason for PR’s problems.

          • joerockt

No actually I know the roster. My “Who” comment is just that regarding Phillips, fairly unknown and unproven and doesn’t help with carrying the ball. But its a good thing those guys can block because if we don’t have a running game defenses will be coming after Rivers early and often.

My original point was that when Mathews goes down, we will be back to Ronnie Brown falling down every 1-2 yards or Woodhead getting blown up often because of his size. Lets face it, he’s not your avg RB and he definitely benefited from the Pats system and the fact that they have a guy named Tom Brady. Teams needed to focus on the pass and getting after the QB. Sproles benefited as well with us when Rivers was hot and was a great weapon, but was not an every down back and he still isn’t with the Saints.

We didn’t address the RB situation in the draft and I feel that’s going to bite us. Though I do hope that we come back to this post and laugh at the end of the season.

  • MC Boltman

I hope Mathews is able to step up his game (vision, fumbling and health issues..) – because I´m not too amused bout the thought of Woodhead being the Chargers “lead back”. But I´m confident we´ll experience a better ground game in 2013 than in 2012. #boltup

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

And how can we leave out Eddie Royal… playing his usual position.. bench warmer.

    • Nick in PB

      He was warming his hamstrings!

      • arnie

        LOL

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Ryan Mathews was one of the most disappointing. Two broken collarbones.. SERIOUSLY?!!! Let’s all hope that Ryan Mathews can stay healthy, and has ONLY football on his mind this year.. instead of… let’s just say “other things” ; )

    • arnie

      Oh look a new cheerleader.

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Things happen for a reason…my biggest dissapointment was Dean Spanos keeping AJ and Norf around one last year….. I am excited for the new direction the team is headed now…

    • Nick in PB

That’s it right there!!! One year too many! AJ believed he had the players to win and even worse than that, he believed Norv was the right guy to do it. I remember how distraught I was when they announced they would be here another year. AJ’s moves in the off season looked good on paper, but he still forgot who was coaching this team.

  • Russell Grant

Can we move to a new story without Gaither’s “I just punked you fools” look on his face? I see this picture and see everything that went wrong for us last year

  • Rob Base

Well lets see Fake injured Gaither, Stone hands Meachem, Bench warmer Royal, Bone disorder Mathews, How do you cover Cason, Too many Blunts Bigby , Tyrone Green Mr I can pulls cars but not my weight ! oh screw it just put the whole roster. We all can agree last year was a joke and embarrassment!

  • 1961 Fan

Matthews gets first round money for fourth round production. Re: Rivers, we could have had Alex Smith for half of Rivers contract; who would take on a QB with an overloaded contract and less than stellar output. Don’t expect much in this rebuilding year!
