Chargers OTAs: Max Starks Present, Dwight Freeney Not Yet

Dwight Freeney is not yet present at “voluntary” OTAs. He recently said on an interview that he will be joining the squad this week, so we have to see what “this week” means. It is only Monday and there is nothing to raise a stink about. I just know that we are all excited to see him in the Bolt uniform. Hope to see him out on the field soon.

Max Starks has showed up to camp and is wearing the number 70. We will keep our eyes out on the reports from OTAs and see if he is working with the first unit or if they are going to make him take the job from King Dunlap.

OTAs are still “voluntary”, but mandatory mini camps will begin next week.

Nice… Guess Starks will have to change his twitter name.

    • Nick in PB

Check out the Starks interview on Chargers.com. Love this guy already!

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

        That’s where I got it from… Lol.

        • Nick in PB

hahaha… I should have known better!

  • Sergio Quintero

I was looking at the roster and I’m kind of shocked at how poor is the level of experience in the the final 9-10 spots in the defensive roster.

If the chargers don’t bring in veterans in camp, the chargers will carry between 3-7 UDFA’s on defense.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’m hoping Cromartie makes the roster, and they drop Greg Gatson, so I can wear my #31 Cromartie jersey with pride again!!!! #SelfishChargerFan

    • Sergio Quintero

I fully expect Cromartie to make the team, I’m actually working on roster prediction for the defense as an article, and if the chargers carry 5 CB’s as expected Cromartie/Patrick/Gatson appear to be the early favorites for spot 4-5.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Can’t wait for the article, Sergio! I’m hoping they sign a SS, so Gilchrist can go back to CB, or sign another FA cornerback.. that would put Gatson on the back-burner.. but, he might get stashed on the PS, and the number will still be unavailable.

        • Sergio Quintero

I’m looking at it on who makes the team with the current roster, odds don’t look good on signing veterans from the outside.

Maybe cutting Royal & McClain would give them options.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            And Clary too… We’ll see.

          • Sergio Quintero

I get the feeling they want to keep Clary, that he might actually be an asset as a Guard.

Who knows maybe I’m reading too much in the most recent Acee columns.

          • Alter Ego

Aaauugh ! Beat a different drum Pete. There is zero chance…ZERO – that Clary is cut. McCoy stated 6/3/13 in a press confrence that “Clary is doing a phenominal job” at RG and is also calling out the protections for the rest of the O line. Embrace your Chargers – stop hating- move on. McCoy is in a better position to provide insight on Clary than you. Find something positive to say about Clary – he is here to stay.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Clary has always been an average player. Him, & Meachem, are the biggest of the “god awful” contracts left from the AJ Smith era. Forgive me if I don’t jump for joy over keeping him. Now, they are moving him to
another position, and hoping he fares well there. I understand that it looks like McCoy & Telesco are getting behind it, and he’s probably staying.Obviously, I hope he does well, if that’s the case. But, I don’t have to like it, or agree that it’s the right move. Their moves are under scrutiny, as much as the players are. I don’t understand why they would consider paying a guy
this much money, when A) he was demoted from right tackle for poor play… B) he will be playing a position he has never played before… C) they have had such little
evaluation time to evaluate him… and D) we could sign a more experienced guard for less money.

I poke fun at Clary, but I’m not just “a hater” for the sake
of hating. This move makes no sense for the rest of the team. The secondary looks like Swiss cheese, and we need that money to fix the defensive backfield, sign depth players, or even sign another running back to play behind Mathews. Even if we do use whatever money we have saved right now to fill these positions
(which I don’t think we have enough), we would be left penniless to recover. If someone gets hurt during the season, we would be in a very bad position.

          • Alter Ego

Just quit it Pete. You don’t poke fun at Clary -you beat him. You are unwilling to embrace him no matter what evidence you are presented that is contrary to your opinion – I can’t get into a discussion with prejudiced people. It is like talking to a blow hard. You should consider this stuff if you want to be taken seriously. I’m done with the Clary conversation with you – you are flat wrong.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’m not the one being called out on the morning dump, joker face.. just sayin’. Not to mention your famous “They are never going to sign Freeney, and it’s a big mistake” comments… nor telling people to “eat my shorts” (how Simpsons lame is that?) If you think using foul language, or name calling, is going to get a rise out of me, then you are mistaken. I write blog articles, but I have never posted a “Clary Should Be Cut” article. What I post in the comments section, is just like any other meat-stick in here. What I write about is a totally different thing. I call it like I see it… are you the KC spy, or something? Because, if you’ve got some big fucking secret, then why don’t you write me something?

          • Alter Ego

Pete…thats very blow hardy. Your chasing a carrot – I’m dangling it. Careful.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

If you have anything on your chest, besides your chin.. you better say it.

      • Alter Ego

Thats a fresh perspective Sergio. MC has written a couple of interesting topics and it makes you think. I enjoy reading about stuff I haven’t considered. Some of the posts here are copy cat or just repeated popular opinion – bring on the original stuff – raise the bar.

        • Sergio Quintero

          Thanks for the positive words,

Early preview, the top 4 Dlineman are looking quite good (Liuget, Reyes, Thomas & Wynn).

But the backup NT are Byron Jerideau, Kwame Geathers both are UDFA’s, meaning at least one and maybe both make the team.

And beyond Jairus Wynn, the rest of the backup DE’s have basically no experience and no pedigree as they are all UDFA’s, the group includes Logan Harrell, Domik Scafe, Jamarkus McFarland, Brandon Moore.

Beyond signing some veteran from the street, 2-3 UDFA alone are making this team from the Dline.

    • JoseSD

Sucks, I have 3 Merriman Jerseys I haven’t worn in years

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

It totally sucks Jose! At least Merriman didn’t go to the Jets, start bad-mouthing the Chargers, and live his life like a total D-Bag. You could still wear a Merriman jersey, and not get messed with too much.. Cromartie? Not so much.

      • Nick in PB

Jose, here’s what you do. Remove Merrimans name from the back of the jersey… Instant Donald Butler! It’s not easy. You have to have a seam ripper. Now, it won’t say Butler but it’s a start. That’s what I did! I had 3 of them!

        • JoseSD

That’s genius, only two of them are stitched, one of them I could probably scrape off Merriman take it to a print or t shirt shop and have them screen butlers name onto the Jersey

          • Alter Ego

Don’t do it Jose. I have a closet full of Jerseys. Everyone of them I was happy to receive or buy. They were special for me – I wore them proudly. I am a huge fan…I still wear them proudly. I consider a jersey like I do our flag – I’m always going to stand by it. I’m loyal. I’m always going to be proud of my team – I’m always going to be proud of the players who were on the team. I think its part of being a loyal fan.
