Would you trade Jeromey Clary….. ?

There is some love coming out of Chargers training camp and from the fans about Jeromey Clary moving over to right guard and how it would be a better fit for him. It probably is a better fit for Clary, but let me pose this hypothetical question to you.

Would you trade Jeromey Clary for Brandon Moore?

Even better… Would you trade Jeromey Clary, Eddie Royal, LeRon McClain for Brandon Moore, Max Starks and a little more depth around the roster?

It makes too much sense! I don’t know why Brandon Moore is still available, but the fact that he is means that we have a chance to add more protection for Philip Rivers. Moore is one of the top run blocking guards out there and he would be able to line up next to big DJ Fluker to plow over some people like Shaun Phillips and Von Miller. Now that sounds like a much better option than hoping that Clary or Johnnie Troutman can cut it.

I understand people want to see Troutman be the starting guard, but you don’t just hand a 5th round pick the starting job without him ever playing a snap in the NFL. Make him earn it and until then he can get some experience behind a player like Brandon Moore.

On June 1, the Chargers can save even more dough on the salary cap by cutting these guys. Cutting Jeromey Clary alone on the 1st would free up $4M instead of $2.3M. Eddie Royal would free up another $3M and LeRon McClain would free up an extra $2M+. That is up around $9M+!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Moore probably wants $3-4M and Starks probably around $2-3M. If you want that protection for Philip Rivers, then cutting Clary and those other dudes just makes sense.

you forget the youth TT is trying to bring to sd. in cutting clary and royal you get two players on the wrong side of 30. sure they might be possible upgrades, but what if clary does very well at guard? both starx and moore will be out of the nfl fairly soon and it just causes future holes to give us headaches for the future seasons. clary and royal have a lot ahead of them. i wouldnt mind dropping mcclain though. gronkowski will probably step up

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

then you get to WHAT IF… there is a youth movement, but he also wants to win now. There is a reason that he signed Freeney. Royal will get cut. Have you seen the depth at wide receiver.

    • RussinSactown

Lee is right. There is a youth movement here and most of the guys we brought in are under 30.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

so keeping Clary and Royal helps the youth movement?

and why did we sign Freeney then?

        • RussinSactown

We also have to assume McCoy can get more use out of a tackle converting to guard and a wideout he had in Denver than what Norv could. If Clary is earning his keep then he’ll be an upgrade.

Freeney is a different need. We needed an edge rusher and TT knows him.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Maybe McCoy can get more out of Royal.. As long as he doesn’t spend half the season on the injury report with a bum hammy like he did for the last two years. Sorry, but not a fan. Time to cut him.

          • tubbs45

Hopefully McCoy can massage his damn hamstrings so he can actually walk without pulling up lame. in all seriousness I am very interested to see how the new strength and conditioning crew does in relation to our landslide of injuries, specifically at WR.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

It should make a big difference, no doubt.
But, not to tit-for-tat, cuz you da man… but, was the strength and conditioning crew in Denver that bad too?

          • tubbs45

Not sure about Denver, but we have had SO many hammy injuries on our WR.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            true… true.

  • Rob Base

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Yes please!

  • davacho

reasons bolt brass may be keeping clary (in no particular order):

1- decently young at 29 (3 and a half years younger than brandon moore)

2- good rapport with hardwick/team and coaching staff

3- TT believes he fits in character-wise and for future direction of team

4- clary has nudey blackmail pics of spanos fam on vacay in greece

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahahaha!!! i will chose number 4 for the win

    • PakMaN

      In for pics!

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

And 5. They get more cap money for cutting him in a few days… Lol.

    • RussinSactown

I thought the nudie pics were the reason we had AJ/Norv

      • tubbs45

Those have all been turned over to Dr. Chow…

  • shayaaa

What are the chances (if any) of cutting him and re-signing at a cheaper price?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

and that would be so much better to me… could be a possibility

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Nope.. He’s gotta go. No more chances.

        • Rob Base

          Agreed

Wanna know something funny? Ever since the Best Comments Post last night.. every time I see a post of yours, It Takes Two plays in my head.. lmao!!!

          • Rob Base

            Haha nice!

  • Gunnar Martin

I hate the what if game.

  • Jordan Denning

Can’t we just cut Royal and then sign Starks? I think clary is going to do fine at guard from the reports I’m hearing…and McClain is an above average runner and a decent blocker. I’d like to see how coach MM uses him.

  • Sergio Quintero

After the draft, I would guess Royal to be cut, and Clary, McClain asked to take major paycuts. If they don’t, then you cut them.

  • pachanga8889

troutman fell to the 5th round because of his injury….

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

And he would have been a 4th rounder without injury

      • Gunnar Martin

I thought most projected him to go in 2nd before injury. Could be wrong, i’ll try to look it up

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Here is one projection before the injury… Not very pretty:
          http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/johnnie-troutman-74/
Even projected lower than we drafted

          • Sergio Quintero

I have never understood the love for Troutman, nobody knew about his injury. And most every webpage still had Troutman somewhere between a 5-7 rounder.

          • shayaaa

Maybe it has something to do with this: “A 6-foot-4, 330-pound guard, Troutman had a standout career as a Penn State Nittany Lion. He started his final three seasons at Penn State, a span in which he didn’t allow a single sack “

          • Sergio Quintero

            http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=77074&draftyear=2012&genpos=OG

That is really solid scouting page, had him as 341st player, which is undrafted free agent.

          • Gunnar Martin

            Oh. Well shucks.

          • Rob Base

But he has a great motor. Man I dislike AJ so so much. Douchebagg

  • tubbs45

Man with the reports of our OLBs blowing by Fluker… I hope he picks it up quickly. Clary really is not a better option and is a huge $$ drain. Could really trade him? Doubt it. I see only two options: 1. Renegotiate 2. Cut him…

    • Rob Base

      I say cut him now!

    • jonpviv

well, at least Phillip can see them coming and duck!

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

You guys know that false starts and holding penalties still happen t the guard position

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

…and being pushed around like a big dummy by guys half your size! Have people been drinking drain-O or something? Did they get flashed with that pen from Men in Black? He’s awful people! No gray area about it.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Oh yea.. His shoes will still be filled with concrete

    • Rob Base

Clary is great for false starts, holdings and QB sacks allowed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/david.mederos.923 David Mederos

Loosing faith in our rookie GM and Head Coach already? Clary brings the little continuity so important in a offensive line. McClain needs to stay for the simple fact that they need compitition at every position. There is no guessing game here in San Diego. Just a precise plan and a winning attitude. This coaching staff looks like an all star cast and I have no doubts that they will prove their compitance. The talent is here and so is a outstanding philosophy. I already have my bet put in at the Las Vegas sports book. Chargers win Superbowl and a hope that will never die for this fan!

    • tubbs45

DM, dont take the cut clary talk as losing faith, just predicting the future. The June 1 deadline will bring the harsh reality of the TT master plan in to full effect. Like they said from the beginning they are not looking for the quick bandaide approach to fixing things, but getting pieces that will benefit the team in the long run. I have found the way that TT has approached Free agency has been… unsettling at times, but I really have seen methodical approach to fixing things. With the exception of bringing in Freeney, that was swift, but necessary. We HAVE to HAVE A PASS RUSH.
75:1 odds for the bolts, I put $100 down on that. better odds than powerball…
      #BOLTUP!

      • http://www.facebook.com/david.mederos.923 David Mederos

I understand that predicting TT’s next move helps pass the time of the off season. Clary could get cut and it would make sense. But for some reason I have to believe that keeping him would be in the better interest of the o-line. Telesco is smart and whatever his move, I believe it will be for the bettering of the whole. CHARGERS 4 LIFE!

  • Rob Base

So what if Clary gets injured then what? I bet Clary is worse then Green. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

    • tubbs45

I seriously doubt that, well alright maybe, ah hell you’re probably right! CUT CLARY!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Can someone PLEASE post the articles where people were gushing about how dominant Clary was in OTA’s… or at last tell me where they are posted.? I am dying to read them, as I totally missed them. I saw one article on Chargers.com, but nobody was really gushing. I will be your best friend!!!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Guess you will have no best friends

      • Gunnar Martin

        Haha!

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Because Kevin Acee thinks that he looks good without a helmet and pads on seems to be the reason why people have changed their tune on Clary… Remember Tyronne Green? Eddie Royal? This was just last year

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

and.. (I’ll probably get massacred for this again).. but Jammer too. Remember the “Jammer is going to have a bounce back year!!!!” article? Not so much. Not that I am not sympathetic to the guys divorce the year before… but just because Acee writes it, doesn’t make it so.. Lol.

      • tubbs45

he was better than the year before. not much, but seriously 2011 was REALLY bad! That picture actually could be from any of the last 3 years…

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Fo real. Sad, because he IS loyal, and IS a nice guy. But, reality is an immovable object.

          • tubbs45

            That is a great line!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            Hahaha.. you like that one?

          • jonpviv

the last 3 years? Don’t you mean his entire career?

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Tubbs said it, but I was thinking it too. Right you are.

  • tubbs45

EP dont forget we still need to sign the Flukenator.

  • Gunnar Martin

Why not just keep him a little longer and see how it goes? Then we can have this conversation…

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

At least till June 1… But OTAs are over and there isn’t much eval that can happen till later in June… Not much to see till later in June. We’ll find out if Clary made a good impression during this last week

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-P-Derrick/1654577989 James P Derrick

..in a heartbeat, I’d trade em if it meant getting the vet LT, Fluker signed, and a vet Guard…..

  • jamfed

Last year, the Jets traded OG Wayne Hunter to the Rams for OT Jason Smith. both were high priced failures. Unless Tom Telesco can find a similar type of swap, Clary is not trade-able.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

it wasnt reallly about trading him… more about cutting him

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

brandon moore is a free agent

  • NativeSanDiegan

Will anyone read this? Snail-email just delivered to me in Hi today. We’ve already signed Starks. Don’t’ really know how good Clary is at G. I would try desperately to trade him and Meachem and possibly Royal, but good to have Royal for depth at wr & kr. Even if we can only get 6 or 7th rd pick. Clary could provide veteran depth at g & t; has to be someone who may like him. Calling AJ in Wash.DC. With Meachem, teams will have injuries or need speed to stretch field (even if he can’t catch the ball. Even if we have to pay a portion of their salary, if it doesn’t count against our cap, I’m sure we could trade sooner or later.
BTW, what are cap differences if we trade or cut, and if we do it now, after June 1, or various times in Training Camp, or even after season starts (especially with Meachem or Royal)
    Help Ernie (or someone)?
