The Details On The Dwight Freeney Contract: 2 Years, $8.75M

Dwight Freeney wanted Osi Unenyiora type money and he got it. He gets a 2-year deal worth $8.75 million and it can escalate to $13.35 million if he reaches certain sack totals.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Freeney’s two-year contract with the Chargers carries a base value of $8.75 million.

The deal pays $5.25 million in 2013, via a $3.25 million signing bonus, $1.5 million in base salary, and a $500,000 roster bonus tied to Freeney’s presence on the weekly 46-man roster. – Pro Football Talk

Not exactly sure how that will look against the salary cap, but I think it should count for around $4M this year and around the same next. The cap is getting full and we still need to sign DJ Fluker. We will get some relief on June 1 and there will likely be a few guys hitting the streets around that date also. As much good talk there has been on Clary during these OTAs, I predict he will be on the streets come June 1.

Does the signing bonus go against the cap or just the 1.5 base salary and roster bonus

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Bonus will go against… But will be spread out across the 2 years

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Or that is how it usually works

      • tubbs45

Yep that’s why they use the bonus! Hate to point out the painfully obvious, but that is what screwed us with several of AJs last deals specifically Big Lazy Cheetos hands and Meachum.

  • tiiiiiiiiiiit11

Won’t be cloase to a fit as SP95, but we let him go because we didnt see the Ingram injury coming ;(

  • MC Boltman

Wow, hoped TT was able to get him in at a lower price, but this was exactly his asking price the last weeks, so no surprise.

  • MC Boltman

We got something bout (or nealry) $5 million cap space before this deal. In June 1 another $4 million will add to that. Fluker is signed yet and we need some money for possible moves during the season.
I was about to jump on the “Clary Right Guard” bandwagon as our guards are pretty injury-prone, but now, not so sure anymore…he´s $5.7 million cap hit – cutting him saves $2.3 million.
Cutting Royal saves $1.5 million – cutting Whitehurst $1.3 million lets go

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Lol.. That Clary bandwagon talk was starting to scare me.

      • aaron nisula

He will excel at RG. If we let him go then the O-Line immediately will be worse! I like the sound of two 6’6″ beast on the right side!

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          Wazzup Aaron?!!!

First off, he he might be too big for guard. Second, his footwork sucks. Also, how do you know he will excel? He’s never even played guard. There is absolutely no evidence out there whatsoever to say that it would be a sure thing. Losing veteran leadership is never a good thing.. especially on o-line. But, forking out THAT kind of money for a player that has never played the position, and has been nothing more than average the entire time he has been here.. that makes no sense to me. Especially after we signed two guards, and have other guys on the team that could play that position.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-P-Derrick/1654577989 James P Derrick

We r gonna have to wait n see how they all do once the pads & full speed drills start…. best players will shine & the rest fall to the backup role, practice squad or cut….I don’t think they keep Clary…. it’s a numbers game

        • tubbs45

Dump him, there are other guards on the market. There are twitter rumors about clary and TT renegotiating his contract.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

MAYBE. As long as it isn’t starter money, and we don’t get stuck with him for three more years if he isn’t good at guard either. He’s already proven he isn’t a great right tackle.

          • tubbs45

Well not starting tackle money, but guard money should knock that total down a bunch, unless you are the titans or Broncos.

  • Cgoodness13

I think we keep clary and cut a couple WRs and TEs. We need stability in the locker room and cutting clary would damage that.

  • Cgoodness13

Wait theirs a sack bonus?! How long before Goodell finds out and fines us lol

    • RussinSactown

Sack total is not a bounty. But I’m sure if he puts Manning on his ass a couple times it’ll be worth it.

    • Cgoodness13

Looks like roger goodell didn’t like my comment lol

    • tubbs45

Lol I don’t give a crap what they call it… Eat QBs all day long freeney!

  • the_fonz

I am happy TT pulled the trigger on this deal. A little pricey? Maybe, but if he produces the sack number we’ve lacked in the past then I am all for it. People who say he is not a good fit, that is not true. There is such thing as a hybrid style d such as what Baltimore, Frisco and Seattle runs. Bruce Irvin from Seattle may have only had 16 tackles as a rookie, but his 8.5 sacks and FF is what made the difference. Freeney will be our Terrell Suggs, maybe not as good but will make the plays needed.

As far as clearing cap space, I say cut Clary and resign for a cheaper price or restructure is contract, can royal and revamp Meacham’s contract as well. The way I see it, TT can find some wiggle room in cap space if he plays his cards right and I’ve yet to see him pull an AJ move so he has my support 100%………GO BOLTS……let’s make some noise.

    • FitzWilly

Thanx for answering the question :)

Lol.. There’s one vote! Any other takers?

          • the_fonz

Another vote from than fonz himself

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            It’s an honor.

          • Rob Base

            I 2nd that!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            Nice!

    • tubbs45

Problem with renegotiating royal or Meachum is that usually you are extending the contract and giving a little more money over time. Meachum nor TT probably won’t do that. Royal maybe, but not if his vijay jay hurts every time he runs!

      • the_fonz

While this is true that’s why I say can royal……let him go. Releasing meacham would cause us to rake a big cap hit and that we do not want. Royal is more expendable financially and depth wise. Keep meacham but at least revamp his contract to prevent in-adding all of that money like they did last yr just for him to drop in the depth. Make him earn his keep is what I mean. But I do know what you mean rubbed. Thx for the input

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Same goes for Clary, right? Lol.. And yes… Royal is one of those “looks good on paper… but, not on the injury bench” type of players.. which he has been for two seasons.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ryan.outlaw Ryan Elliott

We have to cut Clary, if they choose to re sign him after he’s cut is a different story, but the fact that they’re keeping him just because he has a “can do” attitude needs to stop right there. The fact that he’s making as much money as if he were a top OG in the league without even taking a snap is ridiculous.

Clary, McClain getting released would more than make up for Freeneys salary this year.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Thanks for bringing up McClain. People keep forgetting about him. Wasn’t productive at all last year, and was pretty much a ghost.

      • Cgoodness13

His job was to block LBs, but that was pretty Mutch impossible because of the Dline dominating our Line.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yes… But, a lot of the hype around signing him was based on how he had 900 yards rushing in Baltimore, and could fill in for Ryan Mathews if he got hurt. Well, that happened. McClain was terrible at rushing. Lets just keep a good blocking fullback for less money then, in that case.

      • tubbs45

He was blocking 90% of the time. I have long been been a huge supporter of LeRon’s hard work ethnics and leadership. But if my choice is between gronk or leron money wise… But royal, clary, leron are all on the hot seat. Anyone have any idea why Vincent Brown isn’t practicing with the first or second? Hope it’s just precautionary!

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Keep Gronk. I just don’t think McClain is a fit here.

          • Rob Base

I agree with ya on that one!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Agreed… Still would want Brandon Moore inside if we can steal him somehow

      • Rob Base

That would be bitter sweet we land him Ernie.

      • tubbs45

Would love that pick up… Isn’t he asking for 3-4 mill?

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Haven’t seen numbers he is asking for, but know he is still there. I will give him 2! (Like its my money!! Haha)

          • tubbs45

            I’ll chip in some change!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            Me Too!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            Best comment all day.

    • tubbs45

I had heard they were talking to him in regards to a renegotiation. Extension and reduction of the base salary.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Not really time to freak out. A lot of folks will be cut when we have to scale down the roster before starting day.

  • Ioane

I’m glad to see TT make this move. It’s about 2 million more than I thought he would sign for, but we really a pass rusher of his caliber. I hope he comes in and becomes a difference maker.

We currently have 4 mill or so and should get another 4-5 on the first of June. That should be enough to sign Freeney and Fluker.

I doubt Clary gets cut since the teams and coaches seem high on him as a guard. I think Royal and McClain are more likely candidates. We are stacked at WR and we just signed Gronk as a FB.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

.Well everybody was complaining about bringing in no names. Here is some star power, and that is just what it costs. Proven athletes aren’t messing around with the low ball. He may be an aging veteran, but he we will bring leadership with that price tag. Leadership we lost with SP95, and now have replaced with Freeney. Pro-Bowl leadership. Superbowl & playoff leadership.

As for Clary, people may have been reading too deep into him starting, and what Philip said. First of all, Philip is NEVER going to say negative things about one of his lineman. Shoot, he never even said anything about Gaither. And Clary starting.. If I were TT.. and I was paying Clary that kind of money… and I might have to cut him soon to free up space… I would darn well want to make sure he wasn’t a great guard before I did it. He might have been doing his homework first, to see if Clary was the answer. This is just speculation, of course, but that’s what I would do. And Clary could still stay. They could cut Royal, Whitehurst, and McClain… I suppose.

    • Dion Chin

Star power, yes. Old and washed up, very possible. Let’s hope I’m wrong and he kills it this year for the Bolts!

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

It’s not like there were any other options that were younger, better, and cheaper out there. You can always stock up on guys like Keiser, and see if you can find a diamond in the rough. But, the only other option was to roll with injury prone English, and a bunch of unproven late round, or UDFA draft rookies. That doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. I mean, Abraham is out there I guess. Just curious, but what was your ideal solution to this situation? Because, if something wasn’t done about this, we would have been throwing beer cans at the TV! We still might be doing that.. hahahaha! Who knows?

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I like this signing alot, I’ve watched some of Freeney’s training video’s. Because he’s getting older he lifts alot lighter and that might be some of the reason he isn’t putting up huge numbers anymore. I hope he has a great year.

  • veazy

Well, I guess for the people that care, that’s one Charger who will make the Pro Bowl off his name alone.

  • Rob Base

    Cut Clary T-shirts please Ernie!!!

  • ioane

I love this signing. People are down on Freeney because of his production last year, but I don’t think he did all that bad considering he switched to an OLB and played under Manusky who is awful as a DC. He had that 49ers D and they were awful until Harbaugh took over, now look at them.

Anyways, I think Freeney will be better than last season. I doubt we cut Clary, he seems to be better suited at Guard and the team are raving about him.

I would say we cut McClain, Royal Goodman and Dombrowski. That would give us about 4.1 million more to sign a LT like Starks and maybe still have money in case of injury.

The chart below shows us what the cap hits are and what we would save if we terminated a contract.

    http://overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Chargers&Year=2013

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I love that he gets 4.6 million more if he gets a lot of sacks! If we get the “Best Dwight Freeney” for 13.75 million, then money well spent! We haven’t had a beast pass rusher in forever.

  • Lee

i bet we dont cut clary. but say bye to eddie

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Someone please fill me in. I think I may have missed some articles here and there. I saw Rivers say some positive things about Clary (which means nothing, honestly). I saw Acee say we were going to see him differently (who said the same type of things about Jammer & Cason last year). I THINK I may have seen something from McCoy saying he has been handling it well, but not a complete vote of confidence. Were there a bunch of other people & players saying that Clary was “a bad ass” at guard in OTA’s? The way people are making it sound, it’s like Clary was completely dominant. I must have missed something, but I haven’t been keeping up on my articles, admittedly.

To me, he was the worst player on the line when it was great. A BARELY average player when the line was awful (I would put Hardwick & Vasquez ahead of him). And, now he just lost his job to a rookie, and has been assigned to a position he has never played before, and will probably be serviceable at best. Not to mention, he will keep starting experience away from younger players. Does this really make people feel comfortable after all the times you saw him absolutely get man-handled over the years? I get he is a “veteran leader”… but is he? it looks like Fluker is that guy now, and we let other leaders who were better than Clary walk (Spikes & SP) over less money. If I was a young player, I don’t know if I would look up to a barely average player as a leader anyway. Not to mention, he might teach them bad “Norv” habits. I just don’t get it. If they let him go, he would save us much needed money, and he would be the last AJ player on the list that I wanted to see get cut. Crossing fingers!!!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

You didn’t miss anything… Acee also applauded Tyronne Green last season too. Bet he is released. Still gives me no confidence in our interior linemen tho

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Me neither. But overpaying Clary doesn’t give me anymore confidence than if we let him go… Not at that price. Its almost a principle thing for me. Seeing him up in the top contract area with Gates and Rivers and Hardwick and Weddle makes me sick to my stomach! Same with Meachem, but we are stuck with that. How he ever got up there is a perfect example of how mismanaged this team was under AJ.

        • tubbs45

AJ must have like Clark’s Cheetos… No other explanation when last year would have been the best time to find new talent.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

I based my comment that the Charger staff/coaches liked Clary based solely on Acee comments. And now, after reading what you have posted..I am not sure. I go back to the core facts–like you are saying. The guy was not good. So, why would I think he is all of a sudden great? Probably because Coach McCoy is able to get something out of players. But I think I attributed Acee’s comments to Coach McCoy and there really was no basis for that.

But yeah, they don’t change to greatness overnight.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Its been a while since this has been brought up.. But, remember that “definition of insanity” catch line that used to go around about Norv? Doing the Same thing over & over, but expecting different results? Cut him! Unless coach Joe D, and Mike McCoy see something EXTREMELY convincing… He should be gone.

        • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

          Exactly.

    • Cgoodness13

Well jammer did play way harder last season than he did the previous season, his age just slowed him down. Cason was able to make plays, though he tried to do that way to often and let WRs run past him.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Which says everything you need to know right there. They played better, and were still ranked as one of the worst CB duos of 2012… hence, their departure from San Diego.

    • tubbs45

Green and Harris were by far the worst. Clary was a close third, without TE help he was screwed! Also look at his false starts… No bueno. At guard I see he has a potentially new book, but not for that much cash, just can’t happen, there are too many guards out there in free agency to finance an experiment!

  • Will

Clary won’t go. Everyone at OTAs including Rivers have RAVED about his performance at guard thus far. But at the end of the day, without a left tackle nothing will matter. Period. We need Max Starks and the money to pay for him will simply have to come from somewhere other than cutting clary.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Not trying to be a smart-ass here, but who is “everybody”? I haven’t seen anyone except for Philip “I’ll never bad-mouth a player” Rivers, and Kevin “I love to hype bad players” Acee say much. Were there other players, or coaches saying this? I may be mistaken, but would love to find out who these guys are, and see these articles, or accounts. Mainly, because I want to see which Dodo-bird player is saying it!

Even what Rivers said wasn’t exactly “raving”.. he just said that he thinks he can make the adjustment.. but, what’s he supposed to say? That Clary can’t do it? That would be media suicide, and get tons of negative attention. Not to mention, it’s OTA’s.. they haven’t even put pads on yet… how can you tell how he will do in real play, at a new position? If anything, he just has a slight edge on everybody else, because most of them are new guys & rookies to the team, and he’s a veteran player..but, not even a good one at that. He is just familiar with the team.

  • Pels04

This makes me even more excited for next year. Having Freeney and a healthy Ingram!!

  • FitzWilly

    D J Fluker on the O-Line
    D J Freeney on the D-Line
I gues that gives us D J FluKey
    Loving more and more
    Great Job T^2

    Woot! Great thread!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Now, all we need to do is get some CB depth, another guard to replace Clary, and some blind side help for Philip! Every good playa needs blind side protection… I gotz mine… Check it..
