Time For Chargers to Call Dwight Freeney or Nick Barnett

Melvin Ingram’s injury is confirmed and he has a torn ACL. That takes forever to heal! Just ask Derrick Rose about it (sorry, bitter Bulls fan).

Now we need to figure out if there is enough depth on the roster to fill his spot. Next man up! The next men on the roster would be Larry English and rookie Tourek Williams. Are they ready to use these guys o every down? Even if we do use these guys on every down, look at how bad the depth is behind them. We would have to trust Jarrett Johnson to be used more and hope he can put pressure on the quarterback and Tourek and Larry Boy would have to duke it out to see who wins the job. Who is behind them? Nobody really.

The Chargers better look to free agency to try and fill that hole. There will be a ton of talk about Dwight Freeney until we have this whole thing settled in. Freeney was making the conversion as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense before he was injured last season. He was working with Chuck Pagano to learn the system and could be a possibility. He is looking to get a nice payday and the Chargers may have to bite the bullet and give him some money. We can still save some dough by releasing a few players to get Freeney signed.

Another option could be LB Nick Barnett. Barnett played outside linebacker for the Buffalo Bills last season and excelled. He isn’t the pass rushing force that Freeney is, but he is good in coverage and can help bridge the gap until next season. Barnett is also a Southern California native.

Either of the linebackers would be my top choice in free agency. They would allow Tourek Williams and Larry English to drop back into that sub role and we wouldn’t need to rely on them on a ton of snaps.

We could also wait till June 1 and see if another player becomes available. That could be risky though, because other teams may sign the guys that are already available.

And we thought left tackle was our biggest issue!!!

  • RZ

    That’s some terrible news about
Ingram..I was wishing for a Healthy start to the season dammit! Go Boltz!!

  • Cgoodness13

Or switch to the 4-3 :/ can probally move teo or butler to OLB and keep the other in ILB and let Johnson handle the other side.

    • Cgoodness13

Thinking about it, if we do switch to the 4-3 butler and teo would play OLB and Johnson would play MLB

      • jamfed

        Johnson would never play MLB…
in a 4-3, you’re looking at Mouton, Te’o and Butler playing all three linebacker postions, and Johnson as a DE

        • Cgoodness13

You want a run stopper at MLB in the 4-3 from what I was told. And coverage OLB.

      • blu3ny3llow

Why do u like the 43 defense so much??..do u think its that much more successful??….I personally think it don’t make sense gfor them to switch away from a 34…just saying though

        • Cgoodness13

I believe in making you playbook revolve around your players strength. Without Ingram, we have to start English or we have no passrush

  • OT1370

    Two words LIGHTS OUT!!!!!!!!!

  • jamfed

Nick Barnett would be an ILB in San Diego’s 3-4 defense, he’s an OLB in a 4-3. Barnett is equal to a Donnie Edwards type of linebacker, and he not a pass rusher.

  • Rob Base

Look out Frank Beltre he could be in the mix! another udfa that could make the roster. Thoughts anyone?

    • erik

or even devan walker out of SE Louisiana

  • blu3ny3llow

    Barnett is a ILB…..Freeney wishes the 3-4 wouldn’t exist…. so there

    • blu3ny3llow

      Maybe Travis Laboy…lol..jk

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

That’s the shittiest news ever, I was so looking forward to seeing what he can do. This is really disappointing

    • tubbs45

      Seriously…

  • Pels04

I’ve been shaking my head in disgust/ disappointment & anger for the last 4 hours. This SUCKS! He was my #1 choice for us in last years draft but I though there was no way we’d get him. We obviously did but he was underutilized last year. So I was really excited to see him in the starting role. When the hell is this injury bug going to die?

  • tubbs45

Call both of them… We’ll get to see what English has got… Oh boy!

  • Dion Chin

    Just our luck.

  • Pels04

Freeney is coming to visit tomorrow per schefty

  • Alter Ego

Every year we have a LB get broken. It started with Lights Out.

English, Butler and Mouton all got hurt. Phillips (who we all wish we had kept now) had that foot thing . Crap.

Then there is this : Suggs got hurt and the Ravens won the SB…we deliver a little whup ass to the Eagles on their home opener and we punch our ticket to the SB…thats practically the law. So maybe the omens are signs of future glory.
Nah…thats crap…it really sucks that Melvin went and got broken on day two running arround in shorts.
